Pulled Pork Belly Steam Buns (MUST ORDER!)
Genevieve G.

Noodlehead is a must visit spot whose casual, energetic vibe reflects the deliciousness that awaits you once you take your seat. I visited here on a weeknight and the place was POPPIN!! Despite the restaurant being filled with a beautiful mix of diners from seemingly all walks of life. The waiter was animated and helpful with deciding on which appetizers to choose. We opted for the pork dumplings (went with fried cause we were going "light" with the buns, lol) and the pulled pork steam buns. The dumplings were perfectly fried, bites of well flavored pork and the soy-based dipping sauce offer the needed salty contrast. The buns. Ohhhh the buns. Pillowy soft, perfectly sized for a handheld bite and filled with the most unctuous pulled pork. It didn't hurt that it had a schmear of a slightly tangy mayo-based sauce and crisp cukes for contrast. 11 out of 10. For entrees, we went with the Love Boat "Noodlehead Style" which is one of the best noodle-based soups that have ever graced my lips. Thin rice noodles were bathing in an uber-flavorful, soy-centric broth that had strips (can also choose cubes) of perfectly cooked beef and a smattering of thinly sliced Chinese broccoli, cilantro and Thai basil. Topped with fried wonton crisps. Just. Perfect. The second entree we went with was the Street Noodle #1 which came with thicker egg noodles that were enrobbed in a tamarind-centric sauce and topped with fresh cilantro and thin and crisp fried chicken breast. All in all a solid dish, especially if you like your entrees on the more sweet/tangy side. Though it says they accept cash-only they must have recently changed this since cards they indeed accept (but they do have an ATM inside too). Noodlehead. I reallllyy wish you weren't ~5 hours away because you'd be a staple part of my restie rotation, especially when I was craving a big bowl of Thai penicillin. Go here. Soon. You won't regret it.

Now I know why this is on every Pittsburgh Food reviewers list of best places in the city! Noodlehead has been on my list to try for a long time and I finally made there for lunch while my car was getting worked on. The vibes are very cozy inside and my server was such a sweetie and helped talk through the menu with me. Everything sounded so good, it was hard to make a decision. I ultimately landed on the crab rangoons to start and the pad thai with thai fried chicken for my main. The rangoons were very good and I loved the sauce they came with. The star of the show was the main course and the crispy chicken was the best move. Will 100% be back to try more of the menu!

The. Best. Thai. Food. In. Pittsburgh. You have to order the Chiang mai curry. But you cannot go wrong with literally anything on the menu, and trust me I've tried it all. They are no longer cash only, but they are still byob! Perfect. Also super well priced.

nam khao

Has nice ambience here! The sausage has a strong lemongrass flavor, quite flavorful. The chive cake was good but somewhat over-fried so the outside does not really have flavor and is just fried/crispy. Nam khao is yummy, could be crispier. I liked how scoop shaped the lettuce was, made it much easier to make wraps. I also got the street noodle #2 which had some yummy shrimp in it but it was overall too sweet in my opinion. The sukothai was also way too sweet. Overall I feel like the apps were great but the entrees were too sweet for my liking and kind of ruined the dishes I'd say.

Chiang Mai Curry with Crispy Shrimp

Came to Noodlehead. It's been a couple of years but I am glad to see they now take card there. The ambiance is nice and chill which makes this spot good for a casual catchup with friends. I got the curry with fried shrimp. I really liked how crispy the shrimp was on the side but the curry itself was a bit too spicy for my liking, even though I requested mild.

Khao Soi Thai Fried Chicken Kee Mao CHICKEN

Delicious spot, it's the top Thai restaurant for good reason! Unbeatable prices for great portion and quality plates, the crispy Thai chicken was a must try, and the Khao Soi had a delicious coconut broth with crispy noodles. The level 2 spice was perfect for a hint of heat, but as a spice lover, level 3 would be my pick. Frankly you can't go wrong with anything here, and the ambiance is cozy and warm, service was great and very quick, be ready to wait on weekends but trust me, it's worth it!

Shayan P.

Let's just say this: a slice of chicken fell on the table, and I picked it up and ate it. That good. Reasonable price too. Also, if the manager is reading this, give Ryan (our waiter) a raise!

Pad Thai with Shrimp

Noodlehead is our go-to spot when we're too lazy to cook--but still want to eat like champs. Tucked away on Highland Ave in Shadyside, this place never lets us down. Our ritual: grab a bottle of wine (yes, it's BYOB with a cheap corkage fee), order the pork steam buns (because obviously), and dive into some spicy noodle goodness. My personal favorite? Street Noodle #2, spicy level 3--just enough to clear your sinuses but not destroy your soul. You can go from 1 (mild) to 5 (fire-breathing dragon), so choose your adventure wisely. The Pad Thai with your choice of protein is another solid choice when you're feeling classic but still want a flavor punch. Pro tips: Cash only--so don't roll up with just plastic. Wait times are usually under 25 minutes, unless the entire city of Pittsburgh also didn't feel like cooking that night. The plant situation at the entrance? Adorable. Like walking into a noodle-filled jungle. All in all, Noodlehead is affordable, delicious, and just hip enough to make you feel like you've got good taste--but not so hip that you have to pretend to understand the menu.

Love boat

Definitely a popular spot, so expect a bit of a wait before being seated, but totally worth it. This place is a step up from your typical neighborhood Thai spots, as their menu also includes traditional Thai dishes. I love the cozy atmosphere with their plants. Appetizers: Chive cakes - perfectly crisp on the outside, soft and savory on the inside. They came out piping hot, clearly freshly made. Main Dish: I ordered the duck noodle soup. There were so many noodles -- it honestly felt endless (not complaining!). The duck was fall-off-the-bone tender and came as a whole thigh. I have also tried the love boat (thin rice noodles, thinly sliced beef, and beef meatballs). What's cool is that you can choose for it to be served authentic Thai style (a more rich/flavorful broth and garishned with crispy pork rinds) or original noodlehouse style. Drinks: We got the lemongrass honey iced tea, which was super refreshing -- and bonus: it comes with one free refill! Also tried the Thai tea, which had great flavor without being overly sweet.

Khao massaman curry
Lynn K.

Went in with high expectations and Noodlehead food exceeded them! The basil fried rice with chicken was outstanding. It is served with a fried egg on top. The massaman curry with chicken was the best my date has ever had. We went during the week for lunch and arrived when they opened at noon. The place does a bustling lunch business. $15 for each of these lunches and portions were large. Service was attentive and we left very happy!

I've been coming here since I went to college at Pitt. They have the expanded the menu since then, and they take credit card as well. They don't take reservations and won't seat you until the entire party arrives. Highly recommend. Some of the best Thai food in Pittsburgh. Parking can be a little tricky in the area.

Pork skewers wonderful marinade try them.

Wow. Some of the best if not the best curry in Pittsburgh. We showed up at 5:30 on a Friday right before the rush and were sat immediately. We ordered Crab Rangoons that were light and delicious. The other stand out was the pork skewers. For dinner we had three curries, but the stand out was the Mai Tai get that one. We had it at 2 and it was plenty spicy. In fact, the curry was sooo good we poured it over the left overs and took it home. Not surprising we will be back.

Chiang Mai Curry
Ciara D.

Already dying to go back! My sister in law who is vegan took me there for dinner, and it was so good! I told the waitress a little about what I liked and then told her to just go ahead and surprise me! I got the Khao Soi with chicken! The portions were large, so I was able to take some home with me as well! Definitely a cute little spot!

They have a series of vegetarian appetizers, but that's not their focus. In terms of the overall experience, the staff is very friendly and on top of things. We ordered takeout, but the online ordering site didn't give us a confirmation of our order. A quick call to the restaurant confirmed that everything was received and already in process. In terms of the food, the wood ear mushrooms and tofu skins was a clear winner. The broccoli was fine, but I would have preferred Chinese broccoli or watercress if they were available. The five spiced eggplant was fine: steamed to a custard-like level of softness, then paired with a salty sauce and served cold. The dan dan noodles were probably best suited for a dine-in experience and didn't really travel well. My partner tells me that the stuffed pork buns were good, but the solid piece of pork in the center was less optimal than something shredded or thinned out with some vegetable matter. All told, this was a good experience. The vegetarian appetizers were good but not exceptional. The various noodle and bun dishes were very nicely crafted. The hand made noodles were a particularly nice touch, with a lot more flavor and texture than I would have ever expected. If I have any requests, it would be for more vegetable centric noodle options.

We ordered takeout this time, and the overall experience was great. We placed an order online, and everything was very neatly packaged and ready to go when expected. The food even travelled fairly well, such that it was still in good shape after traveling home. The restaurant itself is in a bit of a drab strip mall, but it's generally nicely decorated with colorful signage and a nicely kept interior. In terms of the food, the shrimp spinach dumplings were really nicely done, with lots of flavor and texture. My partner especially enjoyed the barbecue pork bao, which were nicely steamed with a very flavorful filling. The egg tart was good, but not really my thing. It had a bit of a caramelized sugar flavor reminiscent of waffles with syrup. The spicy oil splashed noodles, one of the noodle dishes on the menu, was generally lacking: some nice toppings, but not much flavor. Overall, this is a nice little place that seems to be fairly well run. I suggest going for the dim sum and giving up on expectations for anything on the menu that isn't dim sum. Find another restaurant for your main course.
