The top of my dress was a bit baggy. Upon arrival I was met by this stunning black woman wearing a huge smile and draped in an ensemble of prints and textures. Everything she was wearing were from her store and I wanted all of them- but I couldn't afford it so I bought one piece; the classic Nikki dress in yellow. That summer I wore that dress at least 10 times and every time I did, I'd get a million compliments. Debbie had a sale and ran to get more pieces namely the Audra Kimono and another Nikki dress in print. A year later, Debbie had a stall at BAM Dance Africa and I grabbed a couple more pieces. Folks would pile into the shop everyday to stop and chat with Debbie, purchase signature kimonos, dresses, tunics of the brightest, boldest prints, catch a vibe when the DJ was there on weekends or simply just to hang out. It was that neighborhood spot.
