I just ordered 2 sandwiches. A grilled cheese and the sriracha chicken sandwich. The grilled cheese was good and served with marinara sauce which I've never had together before. I was missing the usual pickle that I get with grilled cheese, but the sauce was a nice touch. The creaminess of the soft cheese was appreciated. Now, the other sandwich. ..the ONLY reason I ordered it was for the sriracha mayo. I asked if that was the only thing spicy on it and the girl said also the peppers. ..which there weren't any. I asked for the sriracha mayo on the side so I can determine how spicy I want it. THEY GAVE ME PLAIN MAYO! I am from the suburbs and am rarely out in the city, I am cat sitting down the street and up 61 stairs. I was not about to walk all the way back over there, but man am I disappointed. I had to grab hot sauce from my friends fridge. I'm sure it's not the same. I should have ordered something else, cause I wanted something that I can't get near me. This cafe doesn't disappoint. I'm slowly trying everything on the menu. Hearty portions and it's always fresh.

Imagine tender chunks of chicken sprinkled with red onions & cilantro that is then coated with smoked gouda cheese and a light & tasty barbeque sauce. Shelter it in a grilled flour tortilla, split it in halves and you've just described the BBQ Chicken Melt at Nohea Cafe. I ordered it in a neat box lunch format which included chips and a chocolate chip cookie. This was lunch 2 days ago and to say it was delicious and satisfying is an understatement. I have a feeling this will be one of my favorite places for lunch. Update: a coffee crave yesterday. I ordered something called the Black n' White Mocha. Let's just say I'm glad I chose the large size. It's so good, and was handed to me with warmth and a smile I could see despite our mask wearing. read more

Came here for lunch when I was supposed to be going back to work..oops.. Nohea is a cute little sandwich shop, although the creepy dolls up front threw me off. I ordered the Mike and Mike and grabbed a bag of chips, which they had a decent selection of. I got a cup of water for free, which was in a cute dispenser-mason jar-type thing, and had lemons in it to make it even better! My sandwich was overall pretty good. The bacon was a little crispy for my liking, but the panini was cooked just right and had a lot of meat on it. The sandwich on its own was definitely enough to fill me up. They also had a wide selection of gluten free snacks and gluten free bread as well, which worked out well for my friend with an allergy to it. Overall this is a cute little cafe that could easily be passed over, but is worth popping your head in for a visit! read more

This is so very Roscoe Village. That is a compliment! I don't know what the NYC analog to RV is. Murray Hill? I dunno. All I know is that when I walk down Roscoe, even in the middle of winter, I feel cool, a little sexy and like I should have some sort of vibraphone playing in the background, while the number 50 bus splashes me with black snow (but, I will never look like a horsey ballerina). What was I talking about? Oh yeah. Nohea. Nohea sits proudly on Roscoe and is a lot deeper than it's sorta-storefront face implies. The seating arrangements are almost all booths. The booths are pretty tight. I am a trim guy. I had a hard time fitting in the booth. This could be a problem for a party of more than a few people with winter coats/bags. This is America. Better yet, this is the Midwest. We need space. We are people of girth. Step to it, Nohea. The service is counter delivery. You step the counter, read from the board, order, sit and get your food brought out to you. I settled on the Cobb Salad sandwich and Hawaiian iced tea. The sandwich was large, but wasn't quite what I was expecting. There was a lot of turkey, almost overwhelmingly so. I appreciated the quantity but, maybe, you can cut back on the turkey and offer an equal amount of ham, avocado, egg, etc. The fun of a Cobb Salad is that there's a ton of everything. There's no real star of the show. Try to recalibrate the sandwich to reflect this. It's a great idea and the bread was the perfect choice. The tea was very tasty. I can't say what made it Hawaiian...but it tasted Hawaiian. Try it. I can see this being a fun lunch spot in the Spring/Summer. Once it works out some kinks, there shouldn't be much holding it back. If you've read any of my other reviews you know I'm a sucker for an adorable local coffee shop. Nohea stole my heart and this cafe is more than just coffee and tea. I met co-workers here for lunch and to work, and I was pleasantly surprised by the size of Nohea's menu! So much to offer. This quaint little cafe has tables that line a windowed wall and a counter full of all sorts of goodies. They offer free water and a waitress brings your food out to your table. I ordered the perfect pear panini which was, well, perfect! The savory and sweet combo was on point. This panini is filled with sliced pear, pancetta, arugula, blue cheese, and muenster. YEAH. Enough said. For $8.25 that's a tasty little lunch. It's a cute spot to post up with your lap top because they offer free wifi. No need to pop in your earbuds, because the mix of music they play is phenomenal! I'm talking everything from oldies, to goodies, to country, to soft rock and beyond. Loved it. Yep, that just what I did. Though the menu has so many delicious sandwiches and salads to choose from, with the cloudy rainy day, who could pass up a good old fashioned grilled cheese. Don't forget to place your order up front, because if you sit like I did and wonder why there is no service, that's why...ha! When you order they give you a number, and in our case they were even nice to bring our food to the table. I met some colleagues here for a meeting around 1pm. I grabbed the last big table, but take note I might not have been so lucky had I come a little earlier. The good thing is most people seem to come in for take out. And you'll see a lot of people in and out the doors. They move pretty fast here, which is a big plus. You can expect free WiFi, a clean cozy atmosphere, and a staff that seems extremely sweet and accommodating. There is access to free water, which is a big plus for me. Funny side note...To use the bathroom, you will need a key. Mind you, there is only one bathroom and it's so clean and inviting, with lots of fun signs to read, that you'll feel like staying in there. That's exactly what happened to me. I was waiting for someone to come out, and when she opened the door she apologized and said she got so comfortable in there she started checking her emails on her phone and lost track of time. The location of the cafe is a bit tricky for those driving and in need of street parking. There is a garage across the way, and that's my suggestion for those searching for the perfect street spot. Found this place while I was staying at a friend's place close by, and totally loved it! The cafe is super quaint and the decor is adorable. They have some great antiques and tables to get work done. The staff were super friendly as well. For breakfast, I got the breakfast panini (eggs, sausage, and cheese) and the portions were huge. I work right next door so this is my go to place for coffee and sandwiches, pastries. Anything I need to grab quickly for lunch as I only have an hour. Their sandwiches are delicious, they use board head meat and fresh veggies. Portion size is nice and the staff is very friendly! The buffalo chicken wrap and the turkey sandwich with avocado is my fav. I have tried everything from their paninis to salads to soup, they do not disappoint! I believe they are a bit overpriced that would be my only concern. Their food is great but i am always a little discouraged when I go to pay. Not to the point where I don't return tho! I wish their were more gourmet sandwich shops around the area. I think they would do really well and Nohea seems to also as it is usually always busy. Upon my arrival to Nohea Cafe I was greeted by the friendly staff and a delectable aroma. I took some time reading the menu available since it was my first time there. I decided on getting the Chorizo breakfast bowl but without meat because I'm mostly plant based/vegetarian. I asked the staff member if they could hold the meat and just give me extra of everything else such as the beans, chips, avocado and salsa. My order did not take more than ten minutes to make. As I waited I admired the decor. I don't usually do this but I was able to peek through and see the kitchen staff making my meal. I noticed one of the chefs grabbing a block of cheese and I asked the staff member who took my order if there was supposed to be cheese on my order she said yes, I asked her to hold the cheese since I'm mostly plant based and can not consume cheese. I looked back at the menu and told the staff member that cheese wasn't listed to be on my the chorizo bowl otherwise I would have asked no cheese from the start. I didn't notice until I left the establishment that there was no salsa on my meal and that didn't help since it already lacked flavor. The avocado and egg were good but the beans seemed to of just come straight out of the can and I had a little less than a handful of chips. I also checked in to the establishment on Yelp and with this I was able to redeem a chai tea latte with almond milk and it was delicious. I would definitely try this establishment again. read more

Cafe is only open during the day so although I live across the street I have only been twice. I looked up the sandwich I wanted online, and ordered it but they were out of pretzel bread. I picked focacciaI as my substitute, but it came on a plain dry bun. Bit into the sandwich and there was a huge hair in it (10 inches+ long.) disgusting! Three letters... BLT: have never been combined in such a wonderful way. I get the BLT wrap (and sub a spinach wrap) almost weekly. It's filled with chunks of avacado, crispy bacon and some magical sauce that brings the whole thing together. Add in some Paleo cookies and you've got yourself the meal of everyone's envy. The staff are nice. My only qualm is: you only get one hole punch per visit, even if you order multiple wraps/sandwiches... they gotta reward you for buying lunch for the office right?!?! read more

Went here a couple days ago for lunch and it's a really cute place. Pretty small but it felt cozy. The menu items are written very small above the cashier and you have to look at a different menu to look at all their food options. I tried The Ricky and it was really average. For something that costs $8.25 I expect my panini to taste a lot better! All you could taste was average Gouda and turkey, I had to open the sandwich to check if the cheese in it was actually Gouda because it tasted bland. I want so badly to like this place because it's so close to my house. It really isn't my kind of "cafe" to begin with I guess. This is the kind of place where urban upper middle class stroller pushers/mommies to be come to gossip and feed after their pilates classes and manicures. Not really my crowd, but whatever. Let's start with the positive. Their sandwiches are f***ing heavenly. A little pricey, but totally worth it if you want to spoil yourself for lunch. The first time I went in I think I got the Chicken Caprese. YUM! Seriously! Second time I tried something with turkey on a pretzel roll which was also phenomenal. It came with a side of sweet potato chips which were delicious as well, I just wish they'd given me more than an amount that fit into the palm of my hand. The lady that I usually see at the counter is always really nice, no complaints about service. I'm kind of sad that they switched to Julius Meinl coffee. I love Metropolis dearly and the new stuff doesn't even begin to compare in my opinion. I tried to sit in here once to enjoy my sammich but I just couldn't. I just unwrapped my awesome lunch, on a toasted foccacia roll thingy when I hear "I love you Jeeeeeeeeeesus" emanating from the speakers. Um...no thanks. I can *almost* tolerate the ultra-lite rock Dido type crap they usually play in here but Christian tunes in a cafe? No. I'm not here to sh*t on anyone's right to believe whatever they want to believe in but I find it incredibly presumptuous that they'd think everyone else wants to listen to Christian music while they eat their food. I just wanted to tackle some of the negative reviews. First off, the sandwiches aren't any more costly than Jimmy John's (for a JJ Club, which is comparable in size) or Costello's (which, in my opinion has gone down in quality). Second, most people don't go to a cafe to listen to music; it's part of the ambience, not the showcase. Who cares if they play Jesus music? You're really going to give them two stars based on THAT? Ridiculous. I'm sure the die-hard clientele of Victory Banner don't gripe and moan over the sitar and flute Eastern-Indian music wafting over the speakers while they're eating their heavenly stuffed French Toast. Sorry, not good enough reason to give a low rating. Just bring your iPod and problem solved. As for no free WiFi, it's common for neighborhood cafe's to not offer it anymore as they lose business for all the moochers that just sit there for hours and drink one cup of coffee. I liked the sandwiches and enjoyed sitting outside eating them--but they lost two customers today. Apparently the manager (owner?) Shirley gives strict instructions to her staff that they can sell food but not "service" customers within 30 minutes of closing. We showed up at 2:35 pm on a beautiful Saturday afternoon with our dog. The outside tables and chairs were locked up, so I asked inside if they could unlock them. The friendly counter girl said they lock them up as they're getting ready to close, but that shouldn't be a problem. I placed our order and went outside. Inside I saw the supervisor come out (Nicolette) and tell the counter girl she's not allowed to unlock them. She said we were welcome to eat inside (Not sure what we would have done with our dog). I had the girl cancel my order and refund the money. And then talked with Nicolette and expressed my disappointment that she would not take the thirty seconds to unlock sidewalk furniture. She said her boss Shirley--who was not there--has made it very clear that the outside furniture should be locked up 30 mins prior with absolutely no exceptions. Surely Shirley can't be serious? I guess she does not want her people to exert even thirty seconds of effort for her customers to enjoy eating the food she sells. Lost s customer. read more

Great Cafe: clean, consistant, and friendly, the vibe here is safe and collected. They have comfortable seating, free wifi (actually, see below), and great cafe food, i.e. creative sandwiches, served with real, fresh ingredients and homemade chips on the side. It's certainly much better than the Starbucks down the street that seems to be constantly packed. The only problem with this place is their terrible music. It seems to be either Coldplay or Christian Rock (seriously), so bring headphones / earbuds. Update: They discontinued their wifi, apparently people were camping at lunch time, so their solution is to stop the wifi... read more

Somewhere at the intersection of phenomenal sandwiches & very friendly staff is where you will find this great little shop known as Nohea Cafe in Chicago's Roscoe Village. I discovered this spot somewhat by accident while visiting my accountant in the area. The cafe is located near the major streets of Roscoe and Damen. From street level, I felt compelled to stop in as my eyes were instantly drawn to the colorful cakes, big cookies and interesting donuts on display. I don't know if she was the owner or manager, but the woman behind the counter was as beautiful as she was nice. After grazing the menu, I ordered a coffee, along with a chicken sandwich and went to a table. While waiting for my order, I couldn't help but to notice the local artwork for sale on the wall. Since Roscoe village is a pretty artsy community, it made sense that I would see Chicago photographs, and interesting abstract paintings. Nohea also has a very warm decor. The tables are large, so four people can easily enjoy lunch. The cafe is also an ideal place for moms who want to bring little kids along as there are tables with games and toys to play with. Food Put it this way: I was sitting at my table when the woman served my dish and my mouth dropped. My comment was, " Is that for me"? The sandwich was absolutely huge and yumalicious. I always appreciate it when a sandwich shop isn't cheap on the meat. I can't remember what all they hooked the sandwich up with, but all I can remember was it was tangy, and real good. The only minor drawback to this cafe is that it's not open late enough. If it were open at night, I'd be there all the time. Oh Nohea you have been so disappointing lately. Here's the thing- i LOVE their food. The mixed greens and Spanish Verde are just so delicious. And the decor is so cute. But this place is in need of a serious management overhaul. Every time I have gone in there in the last couple months, it's chaos. There are always 4 or 5 people behind the counter, but it takes the food forever to come out and it takes people FOREVER to order. Yesterday, I called in an order for take out. I was in there for upwards of 20 minutes just waiting to pick up from the counter. Two women cut me in line. I understand that this could be a one-time thing, but this is ALL the time. The staff need to manage their time and customers better. I am so frustrated but will continue to go because truly their food is so good. read more
