It's no secret that I was more than a little bummed when the Jack's Donuts shop in the Fort Ben area departed. While it wasn't exactly close to me, it was definitely the closest spot.
So, I was pleased to see this kinda sorta Broad Ripple spot open up. I mean, okay, it's on Broad Ripple Avenue. However, you know and I know it's not really Broad Ripple until you at least get to Broad Ripple Park.
I digress.
This is your usual Jack's location. Jack's has apparently been around since 1961, though it's really only been in recent years that it has blossomed. It's still mostly Indiana-based, though there are locations in Utah and Florida.
I like the consistent pricing here. Other than fritters, donuts are $1.75. So many places charge you different prices for different types of donuts. Jack's also carries a variety of energy drinks (including Boba) along with the usual coffee drinks (quite a bit iced and hot). There are also bottled drink options.
This location is probably closer to a 3.5. The employee working was friendly and I like the quality, however, as the first review noted the selection seems to be rather light and the location is simply decorated with obviously damaged walls (likely from the previous tenant since the donut crowd doesn't tend to be rowdy). I was there around 10 am and was surprised at no chocolate frosted options and a surprisingly light, fairly basic selection. The tables kind of look like they were picked up at the clearance sale at the going out of business Big Lots down the street. Lots of potential here, though. So, I'm still skewing upward and going with a 4-star.
I ordered two cinnamon rolls and a large "jack'd sweet tea," essentially a sweet tea with an energy boost. And yeah, it was a boost.
This is located in a strip center and there's accessible parking 1-2 storefronts down. The front door is a single glass door and the location itself has an accessible floor plan. It's MUCH smaller than Fort Ben, however, it works fine and they seemed to be doing a steady business.
With Rise n' Roll leaving Broad Ripple and Taylor's over on Allisonville, Jack's has found a pretty good spot for the ever growing 62nd and Keystone area. While I can't help but hope the selection will grow and the place will get spruced up a bit, it's a welcome addition to this area. read more
