Hello! I read an interesting article about women in their 40s whose "mid-life crisis" are mid-ear and beyond piercings. I am 54, and I double pierced my right ear, followed by a double to my left ear, and triple to my left ear at ages 12, 13, and 16 (apparently my mid-life crisis came in my teens). At 53 I added a right ear helix piercing and most recently a right ear forward helix. I don't view this as a mid-life crisis, just a continuation of something I started decades ago. And, I encourage anyone who has ever wanted to do this to just do it. What are you waiting for? For those of you already contemplating another piercing, Nine Moons Piercing (formerly Pure Body Arts) is the place to go. I saw Starr most recently and she is wonderful. I just put my trust in her regarding placement, and earring selection for the forward helix piercing and I LOVE IT. I also changed the stud in my helix to a hoop (will post a picture eventually). Now for the question that is on your mind...does a forward helix piercing hurt. Hmmm?...I have a fairly high threshold for pain. So, I didn't find the helix piercing painful at all. However, I'm going to give the forward helix piercing a 3+ on the pain-o-meter. Note: "pain" was highest on day 1/day 2. I'm now 10 days out and there is no pain, whatsoever! As for going from a stud to hoop, there was some initial tenderness, but it's gone now. read more

I had my ears pierced for the first time too many decades ago that I care to realize. I had major trouble using earrings lately...could not get the left one in..I forced and forced until I drew blood. Then I knew I needed help! I first called a well-known UES place who was little help except they offered to insert my own earrings for $35 one time. OK, so go there every day plop down $35 to put in my earrings!?!?!?! I then phoned Nine Moons and Casey could not have been more helpful. She explained in detail that I probably had viable holes in the lobes but that she could show me how to insert the earrings. By saying that, she denied herself the fee for new piercings. So, Number One, it is not about the money here. I made an appt the day before, and both Marlene and Casey could not have been more kind or more helpful. Do not be put off by the exterior of their building; there is an elevator..just go to the left, therefore a few steps north of Canal, on Broadway. Once you get to their second floor atelier, all is serene and lovely. They have a great selection of earrings--oh how I loved those daggers!! Please, ......get me these for my birthday!! Anyway, the premises are like an md office....if they dropped you off there you might think you ARE in a doctor's office--clean, totally professional, and so kind. Here I thought I needed new holes but in 3 seconds per ear, Casey put my own earrings in (did you hear my sobbing and cursing the day before as I attempted to jab them in the lobe with no success???) I give these folks the highest recommendation.....prices are very reasonable, they respect all clients from someone like me (over 50, let's leave it at that) to the two 20-ish guys who wanted earrings to commemorate their marriage... I am pretty sure you cannot do better in NYC...just do not, again I repeat, be dissuaded by the entrance..walk to the left when facing the entrance and take the elevator if you need that, otherwise it is only a flight of stairs up to the atelier. I got my nipples pierced by Johnny Pearce and he was amazing! The space is really nice, and all the staff is super kind and helpful. I was nervous but I've been wanting to get my nipples pierced for several years and after a recommendation from a friend I decided to book the appointment! He talked me through everything before he did it and made me feel very comfortable. They look incredible, I wish I could post a picture! Wonderful shop. They are highly skilled piercers and are super concerned with having a sanitary environment , even pre covid. They are not just a one time deal , they care for your piercings throughout the healing process , and no question or assistance is ever a big deal. I've been debating for a while on writing this review.... Firstly I would like to say the store was very clean and inviting. Second the staff and piercing professional were very nice. While they did have a variety of jewelry. The quality of the one that was sold to me was garbage. I had 2 piercings done that day and I was informed that the jewelry would be 14k. The stone sadly was cz, the earing itself was supposed to be 14k... was not. The backing was surgical grade titanium, which should okay.. but was not. The piercing would not heal. Even with the recommended cleaning. The post was changing color while still in my ear, not to mention my ear was swollen for a very long time. I didn't sleep on it and followed all precautions. You basically paid over $100 for a sliver of gold. Severely overpriced, very misleading, total spent close to $500+ tip. Save your money.. Almost a yr later and my piercing is finally healing, after more money was spent to purchase actual Gold and not low quality titanium. read more

A Love Letter to Johhny Pearce: I had such a lovely and wonderful experience at Nine Moons and specifically with the piercer, Johhny Pearce. I came in as a walk-in with a piercing that was acting super-fussy after 6 months. I was experiencing a lot of pain and discharge and knew that something wasn't right. I figured it was probably jewelry-related so I went into Nine Moons to see about switching out my jewelry. Not only did they generously see me without an appointment, but my experience was EXACTLY what you hope for when you are looking to get pierced. Johnny examined my piercing, asked thoughtful and non-judgemental questions about how I had been pierced, my aftercare etc. He even took the time to try a few different backings and explained what my problem was, gave me new instructions and scheduled a follow-up appointment for me to come in and see him 2 weeks later so that he could check up on the healing progress. Johnny was not my original piercer (I was pierced while traveling abroad) but he gave me the treatment and care as though it was his piercing. When you have a problematic piercing there is a certain amount of embarrassment because you think maybe YOU are responsible for the difficult healing process. Am I not cleaning it enough? Am I doing something wrong? But Johnny never made me feel judged or at fault. I was ready to give up on the piercing all together, but he assured me that we'd get through it together. I feel full of gratitude to Johnny and all the amazing people at Nine Moons. The whole experience made me go from nervous trepidation to elation and hope. I am obsessed with my new septum piercing. This is my first voluntary piercing (I had my ears pierced as an infant). I was pierced by Starr and she was the sweetest. She made me feel super comfortable and talked me through every step. I had no idea about sizing and diameter so I trusted her decision for what would look best. I cannot express how seamless this very uncomfortable, relatively painful process ended up being. I originally made an appointment to simply switch out my existing nostril ring but I fell in love with a beautifully ornate gold septum ring once I got there. Had an ear infection (two actually). Made an appointment with Starr on a friday night and due to work I ended up missing the appointment. I just decided to go home, but while waiting for the subway Starr actually ended up calling me saying she had been waiting for me still. By this time it was 30 min past our appt and the store was closed and she was still waiting. She said it was cuz i had written in my appointment slot online that i had an infection and needed to switch it out and she knew it would be important. So very grateful for this amazing kind of service and for Starr switching my piercing from a hoop to a stud for my conch even after i flaked on the appointment. She was very informative. Very clean. Good selection of jewelry and made sure to give me a looser stud cuz of my infection. She told me to come back in a month, which I did and she switched it to a smaller size backing at no cost. Disclaimer: the jewelry is not cheap. Be prepared to spend $100 or more on each jewelry piece as they only carry white gold, rose gold and yellow gold pieces. Starr was charming and A-mazing with my 13 y/o daughter's first earlobe piercings. They pierce starting 5 y/o. She took time to explain the process to my daughter and helped to calm her nerves. Starr gave me the warm kindergarten teacher vibe! She kept everything super sterile, neat and tidy and was also very precise with the placement. Other associates were very friendly and accommodating as well. I paid $185 for piercings, titanium posts and morganite prongs. Then, $70 for the follow-up appt to replace the titanium posts to shorter ones. It's been 6 months since the piercings and no horrible infections to report! Reading the reviews, I wanted to book an appointment with Starr but ended up seeing Johnny because her schedule seems to get filled rather quickly. No regrets though! Johnny was amazing, patient and professional. I was getting my nose pieced. Everything went smoothly, I was well informed, and I was done within 30-40min. My only issue is the selection of nose jewelry was small. It was also possibly a bit over-pierced. I say possibly because the jewelry I chose was "white gold". I believe it I paid about $100. For white gold, the price is not bad at all. However, I don't believe it's white gold. I have white gold jewelry and it has a particular and noticeably white pearly shine. Update: So 3 days after piercing my nose and monroe, my monroe piercing decided to betray me. I woke up and it was all red and angry and my sparkling gem was now sitting below the skin's surface. I freaked, but I couldn't get to PBA until later in the day so I called to make sure Star would be there. Fast forward and I'm back at PBA, this time I actually had to wait but not for more than 30 minutes which wasn't too bad imo for a Sunday. Star recognized me right away and spotted my problem before I even had time to tell her. She immediately put me at ease, explained what was happening, told me there wouldn't be any charge to fix it and then got to work. She removed the piercing while explaining what I'd have to do to help solve the problem. She did her part by removing it, cleaning it out with some smelly rope thingy and replacing it with longer jewelry that had a larger gem...all free of charge. To be honest though, her professionalism, experience, warm disposition and caring personality is priceless. I kinda wish I wanted 100 more piercings just to be treated so well!!! read more

STARR IS AN AMAZING PIERCER AND PERSON PEOPLE! I literally looked at all of the reviews on google and yelp and other places and her name KEPT coming up do NOT hesitate! I got my first and second nipples pierced simultaneously by Starr and there was minimal pain, the process was entirely clean, she explained everything about what was happening. Her instructions to keep them non-infected were more minimal than I thought and worked beautifully. Starr goes EVERY YEAR to a piercing convention that teaches how to properly pierce and it SHOWS. I checked back in with her a month later and my piercings were healing BEAUTIFULLY I think they surprised EVEN HER with how well they are doing. They're not even CRUSTING and I attribute all of my success and hot nipplage to Starr. I wasn't going to switch out to a smaller bar because I didn't want to pay for a shorter one and she moved MOUNTAINS to help me get the smaller bar in because she was very concerned about how well it was healing and didn't want the movement of the longer bar to ruin my healing with it's movement during the night. Went to Johnny for a VCH piercing but recommended to get a 2nd opinion. I was laid on the table with my legs up like a GYN appointment while he sat facing the middle of the entrance of my vagina instead of the top area of my vulva. Moved my labia/lips around then told to make an appointment elsewhere because even when I opt for a Christina piercing instead he said he is unable to go surface piercings because "just never practiced" but has experience of 15+ years. SO YOURE SAYING YOURE QUALIFIED TO PIECE THE HOOD OF SOMEONE'S CLITORIS BUT NOT THE VULVA which would be more like a belly button piercing???? The place is more an aesthetic look than I believe "real" qualified/EXPERIENCED piercers are. The cost of the VCH was about $164 depending on the size ring BUT AN NOSE PIERCING IS $175!!!! I got a daith and helix piercing done on the same ear by Starr. She was super sweet and talked me through everything (figuratively, holding my hand through the whole process). I was most nervous about the daith piercing but Starr made it quick and essentially pain free (felt like a hard pinch). The "pain" went away within a week; its been almost 2 months now and I forget I even have it sometimes! I had no issues at all with my helix piercing. Overall I felt very at ease in her hands. I was in and out in less than 30 minutes - it did not feel rushed at all. I am glad I spent the extra money to visit a professional piercer and I would go back for future piercings. I love Starr, she is super duper sweet and has done most of my piercings. She is fantastic and super knowledgeable. When my piercing got infected she even recommended a doctor that would be appropriate. But this one is for Tobias. I went to purchase some jewelry on a Tuesday afternoon. I was told I would have to wait, so I did for around half an hour. He was super condescending and when I asked about pricing he was very vague. It left really such a horrible aftertaste at how someone expects people to wait, then not answer any of their questions, then wonder why people have such a negative opinion. It was like he was looking to get me out of there as quickly as possible, and didn't want to answer any of my questions/treated my legitimate questions like they were dumb or irrelevant. I came here six years ago and got my navel pierced by Starr and had a wonderful experience. Fast forward to last week, New Years Eve. The earring in my rook piercing that I got pierced 4 months ago suddenly fell out. Luckily, I was able to catch both pieces of the earring but I had no idea how to put it back in. Now, if you have any experience with piercings, then you know how fast they can close when they're not fully healed. I was nervous that I wouldn't find someone to put it back in due to (1)studios not accepting walk ins due to COVID & (2) it was New Years Eve. On a whim I called Nine Moons, explained what happened and sure enough they told me I could come in as soon as I could. I went after work and was greeted by the receptionist, I didn't get her name but she was very sweet. She sterilized my earring and then Starr escorted me to a room and placed the earring back in for me FREE OF CHARGE! She didn't even ask for tip! But I still insisted on giving her one due to her overwhelming generosity. I highly recommend this studio to anyone.
