I'm always a little skeptical of what can feel like gentrified, pop-art-y Chinese restaurants, but I was pleasantly surprised by my lunch here! The interior is spacious and colorful, vaguely corporate but hip feeling. The service was good, though a little intermittent. I came with two friends and we ordered the Fujianese spicy rouyan wonton, mountain jelly salad, turnip cakes, two orders of baos (one pork and one duck), and lychee pork with pineapple and hawthorn to share. The portions turned out to be much more generous than I'd been expecting, so we left stuffed and with leftovers to take home. To me, the standouts were the mountain jelly salad and turnip cakes. The lychee pork was coated in a sugary sauce, which I didn't love (I'm not a huge fan of overly sweet dishes), and the baos were also sugar-crusted and a tad too sweet, though the meat inside was very tender. Overall, I was happily surprised by the food-to-cost ratio. I wouldn't go out of my way to come back again, but it's not a bad option if you're in the area! read more

I really enjoyed my experience at Nin Hao with it's beautifully designed dinning room, friendly and warm service, and most importantly the delicious Chinese food. My favorites are the Crispy shrimp, Sizzling pan cumin lamb chop, and Seafood fried rice. The shrimp is the perfect appetizer and cooked perfectly. The lamb comes on a sizzling platter and served on a bed of onions and was so tender. The fried rice reminded me of the one at DTF and perfectly complemented the flavorful lamb. This is just barely a 4 star. It's such a shame the food here isn't good because the service and the ambiance are fantastic. The menu said the mapo tofu is the best- it was probably the worst mapo tofu we had ever had... and I was dining with two food experts. The noodles were spaghetti noodles which left much to be desired. Green beans were good. read more

Here's some highlights: - seafood congee: great flavor, good amount of seafood and cilantro. If you like congee, get this - Christina's potato balls: an exclusive FJ item! This is brand new, but really tasty. The skin is nice and chewy, there's chicken and vegan options, and the soup is refreshingly light. Def recommend this one - turnip cake: I just really like turnip cake, and the addition of XO sauce was a great choice. - spicy wontons: a traditional FJ wonton, where the skin is made of pork as well. Food was high quality, setting and presentation were pretty, and it was fun to try-- most of the plates were tasty! Favorites: ** beef ban ban rice noodles-- very peanut buttery, savory, and flavorful despite its simple presentation. ** Thai basil salt and pepper calamari-- fragrant 5 spice flavor. Really tasty, and I've never seen fried celery but it was yummy! ** sautéed egg and tomato shrimp-- shrimp were big, fresh, and cooked well. The creamy, eggy sauce begged to be served on rice :) good amount of peppers, tomatoes, and green onions too. ** braised pork belly-- didn't personally love this one, but the meat lovers and kids all enjoyed the meatiness and fatty layer, especially sandwiched in the steamed buns. We were sat for our reservation right away which was great but they forgot about us for a while. The restaurant is open and dimly lit; tables are pretty close to each other. Drinks: we got Uncle's Story, sweet honey wine with rose petals which made me feel whimsy and feminine and One Night in Taipei which as smooth, citrusy and strong. As good as they were once the food came out we totally forgot about them, in a good way :) Food: We ordered the Braised Pork Belly, Cumin Lamb Chops, String beans, Rice, and Chinese Beef Wellington and I rated them in that order. -Braised pork belly is always a win for me and this was no exception. It was silky, sweet, soft and the boa buns were fluffy without any doughy taste. -Cumin Lamb Chops were spicy and moist. My partner said they were the best thing we had. Cooked to perfection- they were delicious. -String beans had a good crunch with a nice spice from the chili oil. -Chinese Beef Wellington; Surprisingly our least favorite. It tasted like a under seasoned burger and we started peeling the pastry wrapping off cause it didn't help the flavor - the sauce it came with was a bit sour. Loved the interior and overall service was attentive and kind. For the food, it's founded on an inspiration from fuzhounese cuisine. The menu wasn't wildly unique or innovative but the food was tasty as a whole. Got the wonton soup (the most direct and classic dish - but had to ask for rice vinegar as it wasn't offered with), Dan Dan inspired noodles, green beans, "beef Wellington", and tomato and egg curry shrimp. The tomato and egg wasn't very curry like but gave a healthy portion of shrimps! Would get the noodles again, a mix between peanut butter and Dan Dan noodles. Won't lie: I've been a skeptic every time that I walked by and had zero intention of dining here. But on the whim of finding somewhere to eat nearby, we walked in to grab a table and I was pleasantly impressed. The space overall new, fun, and modestly upscale (yet not to the point of fine dining). Great place for a date, meal with friends, or even taking a meeting. Onto the food, across three people, ordering around six dishes made us all full. When you read the menu or talk to the staff, they'll say the Mountain Jelly Salad feels like pop rocks. I don't agree with that characterization, but who cares. It tasted good, with a bit of crunchiness and mild flavoring. All the dishes were generally tasty, although not as dense in oils and seasoning as other traditional places. The fish was soft and had the most flavoring across the different dishes that we had. I recently organized a dinner at Nin Hao with a group of friends, and we had a wonderful dinner. The restaurant has a contemporary decor, occupying a large room with massive ceiling and concrete pillars on the ground floor of an otherwise non-descriptive building. There are some interesting touches, like mini mahjong tiles being used as chopstick holders, the large mural on the back wall showing green surgical masks alongside hands cupping a bunch of newborns and two owls riding a dragon, and the mesmerizing large aquarium behind the bar. The menu is extensive. Best way to enjoy your experience at Nin Hao is to pick a lot of dishes to share. Come with friends[1] and order as much as you can; everything is delicious! This is what we had: - Mountain Jelly Salad[2]: Refreshing and slightly spicy with a satisfying crunch. We all loved this dish. - Cold Noodle: Light, flavorful, and perfect for sharing. A nice balance of tang, heat, and umami. - Chicken Wonton Soup: The broth was clear and very tasty, with tender, plump, wontons that practically melted in my mouth. - Seafood Fried Rice: Great all-round dish with shrimp, scallop, crab, egg. - Coco Vancouver Crab Noodle: This dish was the star, with chunks of crab and slippery noodles. Pretty good place for Chinese food! Did a walk in with a friend on a Sunday afternoon and was seated immediately. We got the fujianese pork, the stir fried porky noodle, and the seafood congee. Living in New York for almost 30 years and eaten Chinese restaurants through Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens. There are only very few spots I'd revisit often. Nin Hao is one of them. Not only because I'm tired of the satiation of Cantonese, Shanghainese and Sichuan cuisines--nothing wrong with them, just too many--but the lack of good quality turn me away from most Chinese restaurants. Nin Hao with its rarely found Fujianese cuisines and amazingly curated menu, has me returning at least twice a month. The owner also presents new wine rotations from boutique wineries that complement the menu excellently. The food is just simply amazing! Not drowning in unnecessary sauces, and with a wide variety of flavors and textures, freshness of the ingredients created with a twist of modernity are most but not all the reasons I keep returning! read more

This place looks like it's going to be one of those vibey spots where the food's an afterthought, you know, where everything arrives in color-coded trays within minutes and tastes like... the concept of food? Nope. MáLà actually brings it. Asian Chili Shredded Beef, shockingly good. Tender, savory, with real wok flavor. I was side-eyeing the speed it came out, but every bite shut me up. Rouyan Wontons: spicy, silky, delicious. They call them Wuhan-style, but the real headline is that chili oil. A deep, soulful burn. Watermelon Radish Salad: unexpectedly punchy. A little heat, a little crunch, and a lot more personality than you'd expect from a salad. Hot & Sour Soup: eh. The one weak link. Not bad, just kind of... there. Like someone followed the recipe too literally and forgot the soul. The Lychee Cocktail: fine. Floral, safe, very lychee-forward. Won't blow your mind, but it gets the job done. Only real complaint: the menu online doesn't match what's in-store, so ordering felt like trying to sync subtitles to the wrong movie. Mildly annoying. We stopped in on a Thursday evening for Happy Hour (M-F from 5-7pm) which they recently added. I was impressed by the choices on the HH menu! We each had a cocktail. He had the mezcal based and I had the gin. Both were delicious. For food, we ordered the spicy Rouyan wonton, fried beef dumplings and Szechuan spicy popcorn chicken. The wonton was the best appetizer but the popcorn chicken and the dumplings were good too. Service was excellent. We got there at 6:15pm on a Thursday and we were the only ones. The decor is really impressive. Plants and flowers are well thought out. The mural on one of the main walls caught our eye! Fun! We would definitely go back for HH. read more

Lovely and refreshingly interesting restaurant that's not only beautiful looking but has real substance too! (In our modern Brooklyn? Who knew it was possible?) Nin Hao is full of intrigue -- color pop place settings, a giant mural, fish tank bar and a type of cool abstract charm that reminds me of the pages of the MoMA store catalog. The folks here are friendly and helpful where the menu is coy, and they all seem to be having a good time (at least on the dining floor) which is a welcome vibe. The food is reflective of that playful spirit. Everything we had was jam packed with flavor flavor flavor -- and thankfully not in an exhausting way. Loved the simplicity of the mountain jelly salad (which had a great crunch and no jelly), and the spicy cold noodles. The cumin lamb chops were also a stand out. I also happened to have gotten the Xin Jiang cocktail that tastes almost exactly like it but with a candy sweeteness to it -- maybe a little too much of a meal for me, but it was certainly interesting. (The little Beef Jerky garnish was DELICIOUS.) All in all a memorable dining experience and a great setting. Ninhao is a wonderful spot for tasty Chinese food with a touch of charm. We ordered the Thai basil calamari, spinach wonton, ban ban rice noodle, egg tomato curry shrimp, string beans, and seafood fried rice. All were excellent. The green beans were crisp and flavorful, the dumplings were juicy and filling. I would highly recommend everything that we ordered. The cold chicken was just as impressive -- tender, clean in flavor, and very true to Fujian-style preparation. The steamed fish was excellent and noticeably different from the more common Cantonese-style steamed fish. The seasoning felt lighter yet more layered, highlighting freshness in a uniquely Fujian way. The rice cake tasted exactly like the ones I had when visiting Fujian, China -- soft, chewy, and nostalgic. The noodles and fried dumplings are true Fujian snack staples, not the usual Americanized versions. It really felt like eating local street food from a specific city, not a broad "Asian" menu. The Wellington beef was incredibly tender -- it literally melted in the mouth. What really stood out was the way they served it. It came with bun bread, which traditionally is paired with condensed milk for dipping. But here, instead of condensed milk, they paired the bun bread with rich crab sauce from the dish. Decided to check out Nin Hao after it was listed on the Resy Hit List recently. The restaurant itself is very pretty, a large concrete space that feels open and inviting. I think my favorite aspects of this meal were the friendly service and the cocktails. The food itself was not anything super special, leaving me to wonder if maybe we just ordered the wrong dishes? Fujianese Wonton in Chicken Broth was lacking flavor (both broth and dumpling). Seafood Pancake was a little different than expected - but actually fresh and pretty tasty (best food item we had IMO). The "Wellington" style short rib, might've been deep fried? The coating around it felt heavy and fried. Meat itself was not the best and looked unappealing. I had to try it, being a fan of the classic dish but it was not my favorite. Beef Ban Ban Rice Noodle I believe was supposed to be their version of Dan Dan noodle but lacked any spice (it's also suggested to order to pair with the wonton soup, but I don't really see how they go together at all). Sautéed Mixed Mushrooms were OK. Has little tasty pieces of pork. Ahh yes, and the drinks! I tried the Hai Nan which is a light and sweet lychee-leaning bubbly, drink with rum and rosé. My husband had the Xin Jiang which is bourbon based with cumin, walnut coffee, vermouth, and sherry. And again, shout out to the servers and staff who were all super nice and helpful despite the restaurant being pretty crowded and busy. (Apologies for the mid-bite/drink photos! 5 stars for the beef short rib, though this may or may not change after I hunt for it in Sunset Park. I was shocked to see a beef short rib entree for $58, but once I had a bite, I understood. It's easily one of the best bites I've had this year, and it made me pause in the middle of very enthralling conversation to savor it fully. It looks deceptively simple - short rib encased in some batter - but I can't imagine how this was made. Was the short rib braised and then battered, or was it sous vide? How did it maintain this shape and yet is so tender and flavorful? Truly a mystery. The other dishes were good too, but were not anything I'd go back for; I was particularly excited for the tomato & egg but I overhyped it for myself. The seafood fried rice was pretty mid. I was also very excited for the taro cream since I've recently been loving buckwheat ice cream with perilla oil and furikake, but I think the sesame oil detracted from the taro. I liked the osmanthus syrup but I would've wanted more. The cold noodles were very tasty but I've definitely had similar elsewhere for less; since I can't remember where (for now), I'd get this again. I was a little annoyed our waiter kept coming to ask if we were done with the food when we clearly had more than half the food left on the plates. If there's a seating limit, just tell us at the beginning of the meal; there wasn't one mentioned on Resy. Overall, as a Fujianese-American, I'm excited that there's a market for this food to be trendy so that more people can experience Fujianese food. I've actually never had the beef short rib before so I'm particularly delighted to learn more about my culture. I'd go back just for the beef short rib dish. read more

I genuinely love both their brunch and dinner menus--everything I've tried has been delicious and thoughtfully prepared. Also the bar had a great mix of drinks. Manager was very professional. The atmosphere was great. I'd come back just to sit at the bar and order the shrimp with a glass of wine. Same goes for the ban ban noodles, perfectly seasoned and sauced. Loved them. The veggie dumplings were some of the better ones I've had. The seafood fried rice...I wanted to love it, but it's a miss, especially for the price. It was bland, eggy, and had some small shrimp and scallops that lacked flavor. We only found one piece of crab in our dish. What made it better was bringing it home and marinating the seafood, adding garlic, onion, and ginger to the rice and pan frying it. Dylan the bartender was super accommodating and very knowledgeable and passionate about Chinese food and knew a lot about Fujianese, Taiwanese and Sicuan food which is impressive for a bartender on Thursday who's not Chinese. Reminds me of the broth you get with when you get chicken over rice Chinese or thai style. The dumplings are super small and underwhelming however and I couldn't taste any different flavors or spices in the meat. This def needs something - Riceball dim sum - good too. Actually one of the best restaurants I've tried in the city in months. I've not been impressed by much of the Chinese food spots around, but this Fujianese take is unlike anything else I've tasted before. The braised pork belly was the standout dish for me--the sauce is rich and salty but very complex, the meat is perfectly cooked and is delicious on those fluffy buns with the pickled veggies. The ban ban noodles indeed were a new take on the Szechuan dan dan and far more palatable to someone who doesn't enjoy a dish overloaded with spice. The peanut flavor came through nicely and it still had a little kick. The braised eggplant was a good compliment to the rest of the meal, not too overpowering but nicely seasoned and prepared. The wonton soup wasn't anything too different but I like how they had the little pockets of filling in the wonton rather than overloading the whole dumpling with dense scoops of meat. I would absolutely try more things next time, but their signature dishes are not to be missed! Very adorable interior as well. read more

Such a great Chinese addition to Brooklyn! I'll admit I don't know what traditional Fujianese cooking is aside from that they have a lot of seafood. And Nin Hao didn't disappoint. Must gets: -Fujianese Taro Pork Rice Ball - Crispy Shrimp (so easy to peel! I usually don't like to get my hands dirty while eating and I was able to peel these with my chopsticks) - Sautéed Egg Tomato with Curry Shrimp. This was my husband's favorite thing on the menu. It's an interesting fusion of traditional Chinese egg and tomato with a southeast Asian spice blend and shrimp. Probably the least aesthetic dish but really really good with a bowl of rice - Crab Glass Noodles. This was my favorite: tons of crab and a nice crunch from some julienned peppers and celery mixed in Can probably skip: - Fujianese Spicy Rouyan Wontons. Saw everyone else getting this but TBH didn't think there was anything special. Not sure why they're so hyped The owner here is also lovely and is very active in the dining room. First time at this new restaurant and more than pleasantly surprised. First, the ambiance is calm and well pointed. Plenty of room between tables and very comfortable chairs. The service is perfect, performed by very cute outs and helpful young women, who were not only professional but also well versed in both the food and drink on the menu. The food was delicious and spiced just enough for flavor but not annoying. We were 6 people and two large food platters, one regular dish and three appetizer dishes was more than enough. Even the tofu, not one of my favorite foods, was tasty. Can't pick one dish that was better than other, going from noodles to beef to fish. I would definitely recommend this restaurant and glad it has come to the neighborhood. read more

Excellent new neighborhood restaurant. Delicious food, creative cocktails, an open, airy space, and attentive staff. The Mumbai Duck may be the best dish I've had this year. Salty-sweet-spicy, with a light, crunchy crust that gives way to butter-soft flesh. read more

Exquisite. I booked this restaurant for my company's holiday lunch. I look great in front of my colleagues. Everything came out well. I know I'm at a good restaurant when they get me to eat my veggies. Try the Mountain Jelly Celtuce Salad. The Beef Wellington and General Tso's Chicken are elite. The staff was attentive and kind. They knew how to explain the food to our large party. The artwork, tableware, and bathroom were cute and everyone enjoyed being in the space. The one criticism is the to-go containers were very leaky. Nothing to stop you from going. Just bring your own Tupperware. read more
