We went to Nick's on the recommendation of my sister-in-law. She raved about Nick's endlessly, so we have it a shot. The waitstaff is friendly and attentive. The food was quickly served. As our 13-year old was starving, this was a bonus. Our 13-year old gave her fried shrimp a thumbs up. She apparently chose better than her parents. My fried clams were okay. The coleslaw was not tasty. My wife did not care for her crab cake and agreed with me about the coleslaw. I did not care for the hush puppies, but my wife and daughter liked them. My boyfriend mentioned Nick's recently as a place he enjoyed,many breakfast meals during mid to late 90s. So I suggested we go eat lunch there today. I was hesitant as we pulled into the parking lot because I saw one person who I believed to be one of the cooks standing out back smoking a cigarette. We were seated inside and enjoyed scenery taking us back in time. The young lady who was our waitress Sara Beth was very good and worked her tail off. She appeared to be compensated for the others who were standing around. She was performing multiple tasks: waiting tables, operating the register, prepping silverware, and doing set-up for the meals. The food was decent. Fries were cold and bacon should have been trashed it was so burnt. The burger itself and the condiments were tasty as was the iced tea. We hope she doesn't have to share her tip because she earned every bit. Another table asked for the manager since their food wasn't to their liking. They were told no manager was on site. Great "locals" restaurant for fresh seafood. Their flounder is the best at the beach and their homestyle veggies are always delicious!

Have eaten here a lot w friends. Breakfast has always been good. A couple of friends shared recent bad meal reviews w me and I just overlooked their opinion. I recently had their $17.99 AYCE fried flounder. I couldn't finish my plate. The fish looked awesome but was very mushy w no taste. First bite gave them the taste and texture of mashed potatoes. I guessed somehow the fish maybe had been frozen incorrectly? I have eaten fried flounder at many restaurants and have never had anything like this. Fish/a beer/tip was like $30 wasted. I have eaten here several times. This is one of my Father In-Laws favorite watering holes and resturant. However, it is my least favorite of his favorite joints. My experiences have been all over the pace. I have had meals where I left fat and happy after eating some perfectly cooked seafood. Then, there arevthe experiences I had like tonight where I left thinking I could have gotten a better meal at Long John Silvers. When they are on they are great. BUT, when they are off they are bad. I decided to try a new place for breakfast after my morning walk on the beach and came across Nick's Restaurant. The staff is so welcoming and friendly. I decided to go for the crab meat omelette and I'd say there was crab in every bite and the chunks were nice and big!! I got some coffee on the side and the wonderful waitress sent me home with a to go cup of coffee. The atmospheres was wonderful, food was wonderful, I'll definitely be back!! read more

A classic hole in the wall restaurant Nick's seafood has always been one of those places I've always passed by but never stopped into during my 20 year residency in Virginia Beach and now I see why. Sandwiched in the decaying buildings on Laskin Road, Nick's always looked like your typical hole in the wall southern eatery--like a seafood version of Waffle House. When I walked in to have lunch with my coworkers, I realized I was right. We sat at picnic style tables and against a backdrop that reminded me of the nicest home in the trailer park. The food and service didn't do much to help the scenery. The waitress started out nice, but quickly become agitated by our large group (although we called ahead for reservations). She huffed and puffed and sighed every time a new person would sit down or order a drink--not very welcoming. I ordered a hamburger that was over done and tasted like a frozen patty. My coworker was also disappointed with the pancakes and scrambled eggs she had ordered. Maybe they fair better on seafood, but I'm not willing to go back and try it. read more

Still the same great service that i've always enjoyed but I was really turned off by the size/amount of oysters I was given the last two times I went here. Three weeks ago, I visited and ordered the fried oysters...which have never failed me. They were tiny and gave me very few and I think that the waitress heard me saying something so minutes later she came out with ANOTHER plate of oysters....it was a very nice gesture. I went here last friday and ordered the same dish, there really isn't a true "season" for oysters anymore as you can get the fresh all year round and yes, there are some months where you can get larger ones, these just sucked. read more

Best little dive near the beach. My wife and I were walking to Burger King for a breakfast sandwich and an older gentleman asked us if we were looking for breakfast and he told us Nicks was the best in the beach!!!! Food portion at this place is big. I ordered a broiled seafood platter for 26 dollars and it was good amount of food for two people as it comes with 5 jumbo shrimps, 5 scallops, flounder, crab cake, oysters, and two sides of your choice. All the seafood tasted really fresh and their homemade crab cake is the best I've ever had, loaded with crab meat and delicious flavors. Homemade fries are really crispy and yummy too, think they added corn starch to the outside of the fries? Burgers are around 6~8 dollars and the buns are tasty. Slow, overworked staff who couldn't handle the flow of a Thursday early evening crowd. I would complain to them but they never came by our table. There was a fly in my son's lemonade that I couldn't inform them of. They looked frazzled and stressed. Food was ok. Got the Laskin Road special. Shrimp and scallops were good, fried oysters were gummy and gooey. Ordered a Greek chicken salad to go for my wife. My 8 year old noticed it has taken more than twice the time to make that than the fried seafood plates the 3 of us ate. As I'm typing this, another fly flew into my son's glass of water...fitting It's been a steady 25 minutes since anyone came by our booth to check on us, offer refills or hand the check. Food less than average quality. Watch your bill . They use a an old fashioned calculator to run your bill. They charged us $12 too much. I caught it with my new fangled iPhone calculator. The staff seemed offended I found the error. They never even said they were sorry for the error. I think it's how they can skim money on top Of each bill. Buyer beware. I started this review 5 months ago, so this info might be a little old... Friday night special: all you can eat trout. Fried, with fries, slaw and hush puppies. Sounded like a good idea for $10. And it was. It sounded like a challenge to me. All you can eat trout? How hard could that be? It's a trout. Fish. Fish can't fill you up too much... It does. At least from here, it does. I gave it my all; my aim was to get down at least three fillets. I didn't realize that the fish that they cut these fillets from were monstrously huge. It was like eating the side of a small shark. A perfectly fried and seasoned side of a small shark. The fries that accompanied it were also perfectly cooked and the slaw gave a good cool bite to round out the plate. Attentive, speedy, natural guest servicing. Hatteras clam chowder was GREAT. I also had a bacon cheeseburger which was divine. Bacon was crispy, meat was perfectly cooked and the kaiser roll it was so graciously placed on....I ate all of my food, including the extremely hot and crispy fries. The fact that it is practically connected to a laundromat was a turn off, but I figured I'd try it anyway. Service was horrible, our waitress looked strung out on crack and was so frazzled it was uncomfortable. My husband didn't like his fish. I got a pastrami sandwich, which was fine. Hard to mess up. Oof! Some of the reviews are really rough. The place was attached to a sketchy laundromat, but I think has closed down. It wasn't in business the last time I went. Some other things happened that resulted in a dark time for the area that was so close to the oceanfront, but it's come a long way. Trust me. Not gonna lie, it was a bit eeehhh for a while, but with them reworking the underground pipes on the street and the road itself, as well as getting new tables and fixing some of the ceiling tiles, it's definitely improved. I've never ran across (or had run across me) a cockroach or rudeness. A few of the waitresses have a hard time warming up to some guests, but I amount that to having a hard day and being a waitress in general. It's not an easy job and the pay isn't that great. All in all, I've never had a bad experience there. Ever. The very first time I went, I had the all-you-can-eat fried trout. I'm not a trout girl, but I had it anyway because AYCE? I'm about that. It was good and I enjoyed myself. Left with a full belly and so did the people with me. I thought I was hooked on trout, but then... I saw AYCE fried flounder on Tuesdays on the dry erase board. Whaaaaat? Shut your mouth. I think I've been to Nick's around 30 times or so (haven't been there in a while) and there have only been four other times I haven't gotten the AYCE fried flounder (chicken parmesan, shad roe, grilled cheese with tomato soup, and liver and onions, all great). It's gotten to the point where I don't even care for the coleslaw and fries that come on the side. They're good and all, but I need some space for the fish! The batter is nice and crispy. It's not too greasy. Just enough oil to mix with the batter to get that nice mouthfeel. It's not like that nasty piece of fried fish you get where it's 50% batter, 45% air, and 5% fish. No no no. It's all delicious, juicy, and tender flesh. Plop on a dollop of tartar sauce and a squeeze of lemon juice. I'm in heaven. I do get down a hushpuppy or two. I think they're the best I've ever had. There are some desserts at Nick on display. I had the coconut cake once and it was pretty good. If I weren't traveling or much, I'd pop in right now! read more

Went once with my Aunt and Uncle, who are VA Beach locals. As others have said, Nick's is what comes to mind when you think of a hole in the wall. Friendly service, good food, great prices. I want to go back to try the different specials, but the chicken cheesesteak and tuna sandwich I had were great. I was going to give them three stars because I've only been once, but gave them a bump up for having a good selection (for a hole in the wall joint) of beers on tap. read more

This place came so highly recommended. I give one star because it's cute and dive-y and reminded me of home. Everything else was an absolute train wreck. Now, it's small. It's a dive. It's a little rundown and outdated. None of those are complaints. It's actually quite charming. But that's where my good experience stopped. Our server was an absolute space cadet. I think she was baked out of her mind. She even told the adjacent table she's spacey all the time. Spacey is fine, but not when it means you're awful at your job. I've been a server and a hostess, it paid my way through school twice. Some people are good at it, this girl was not. She had zero personality, didn't keep drinks full, didn't know what anything was on the menu that we asked about, and didn't know which beers were on tap (there are three. Bud, Bud Light, and in her words, "Fat Tire, the fanciest beer we have.") We asked what deviled crabs were, and she said, "oh they're tiny pieces of fried fish. Basically only good for two people. Tiny." I'd say if you claim international fame on something, your servers should be able to describe it more tastefully. She said she was new, but the menu isn't so big or difficult that you can't answer basic questions. I ordered the Shrimp stuffed with crab meat. It came out and was a tiny portion for $16.95. Three small pieces of RUBBERY shrimp, that were NOT stuffed with crab meat... They were laid on top of what looked like frozen crab cakes. Tiny. My brother ordered the fried platter. There were 2 pieces of tiny shrimp on the plate, and the scallops were burned. Also, she brought our food two at a time. There were six of us. The second round came after seven minutes, the third after another five. I sent back my food. She didn't say anything. I can't understand why this place is a Virginia Beach institution.
