Okay, we heard so much about this place having the best hamburgers in CHICAGO! So we traveled to Lemont which for us was close by. It's a little place reminds me of the "corner tavern" in Chicago where I grew up. A few tables and a bar. Clean place, music low so people can talk, couple of TVs with the Cubs and Sox playing. The menu is simple burgers, hot dog, sandwiches, etc and of course a menu for beers and wines. The Nick burger is a pound hamburger and little nick is a half a pound, I would recommend they add a NICK JR. Or Nicolette 1/4 lb. because I could not finish the little nick!!! In this Ozempic world got to think smaller! I wanted to finish that hamburger but man o man, no way! Hands down the best hamburger! I said it! Fresh not frozen, hand pressed! They don't sell fries, I didn't even miss them. The hamburger comes with a bag of chips! The hamburger came with pickles, they can give us half of the amount because that's a lot of pickles! Reasonable price which is unheard of these days! CASH ONLY! So go to the bank first!!! The waitress was very nice! A little bit of wait to get our food but in a hurried world it was just fine! First time visitor. After hearing about this burger for a million years we finally stopped to try it. We got it with everything on the side except the pepper jack cheese and lettuce. The burger itself was super tasty. I could have ate that and been happy. The bun was just a plain bun, I think having it toasted would have made it better. Stopped by while attending the weekly Lamont Cruising Night on 7/9/25 around 7:30 pm. There were open tables but alot of people at the bar. After about 10 minutes, a server finally stopped by and said, "You know what you want?" No hello, just a question. We ordered the burgers and chips and water. I had grilled onions, and my friend had raw onions. Pepper jack cheese, lettuce and tomato and mushrooms (50 cents extra). They had a small selection of chips to choose from. The server pooped two bottle waters on our table (and charged us $2 each though we never asked for bottles. We saw her bring cups of ice water to other tables as we waited.) Then we waited, and waited. After 20 minutes we stopped the server who was mostly focused on the bar, and as she passed by the table, she said it would be right up. I then literally heard her ask the woman in back at the grill how long it would be. We assumed there might ve a longer wait because it was a Cruise Night, but only a couple tables were ordering food. We continued to wait. I told my friend we should just leave because we were missing time we could be outside looking at the cars. He said we should stay. Finally the woman from the grill brought our burgers. She didn't say anything but "here you go". I knew which one was my friend's burger because it had raw onion. I did not see any grilled onion on mine except one piece laying on the plate. We had to get our own chips from the rack on the wall by the bathrooms. The server walked past our table again and said "Everything is good?" as if she was just too busy to engage in any kind of conversation. This was the most tasteless burger I ever ate. I dont think she used any seasoning. I didn't taste any onion. And it only had a small piece of lettuce. If there was mushroom, I didn't see it. The only thing with any flavor was the sour cream and onion Lays chips I got myself. We got the check, and we were charged 4x for the "extras" (lettuce and tomato) and $2/each for bottle water which again we didn't order and were not told was extra. We also got charged $0.75 each for cheese, which the menu did ot say was extra. I thought this would be a quaint eating experience while enjoying a nice time at the car show. It was a complete disappointment, not just the food quality but also the experience with the server. Once we got the check it was nearly 9 pm, and we missed out on the remainder of the car show I do not recommend going here unless you are just here to drink. To get started, Nick's Tavern is not a dive bar. It's clean, fairly comfortable for a bar and there's no trouble. It's just a place, like Tom's Place down the street and around the corner, that has been in the same spot for what seems like a lifetime. I grew up in Lemont, graduated high school in Lemont and hung around for five years afterward. Nick's has always had it's basic customers and it's fans. If you have a thing for small town bars, you'll like Nicks. The two star review is not a reflection of the bar or the employees. I simply think the legendary burger is only so-so. Sure it's large but that's no real claim to fame. Anyone can make a one pound burger and many do, but are they really enjoyable or just big? I want real flavor with seasoning and fries on the side. You won't leave Nick's say "I got screwed" or "That sucked", it's just a burger, nothing more and nothing less. Remember, I mentioned french fries. Well, for almost ten dollars you won't get them. You can buy a bag of second rate Vitner's potato chips, but with a burger or hot dog you really want fries as part of the package, right? Lemont is not a particularly friendly village. There's the downtown area that caters more to the longtimers, then there's the southern section where yuppies and millennials have built up and settled. I found out that this place does not serve fries, which was a little bit of a disappointment because who doesn't love fries with their burger. One of their "chip" options was Andys Hot Fries which I thought was pretty cool because I haven't had those in ages. I got the Nick's Burger which was HUGE. Been here a few times when the Town of Lemont was a bustling 'Dive Bar' destination. That vibe is long gone but Nick's Tavern is one of the few remaining survivors. The bar is nostalgic, but it's all about the grub. It's basically a meat loaf style burger joint. The famous 'Nickburger' is a one pound slab of beef cooked on a well seasoned flat-top and smothered with every condiment imaginable like Ketchup, Mustard, Pickles, Relish and Onion. Best described as a mop sauce with a sloppy overtone. It's an oversized behemoth disguised as a Burger on a Bun! When this frisbee sized concoction lands on your table, take warning and reach for plenty of napkins and a bottle of Pepto-Bismol. I customized my burger specification focusing on the taste of the original burger recipe itself. Lets just say adding Grilled Onion, Cheese, Lettuce and Tomato did absolutely nothing to help revitalize that lack of moisture to this belly-buster. After all, I'm not surprised that people tend to order this slow cooked circa 1945 icon covered with anything possible! Welp, I hadn't been back to this joint since 1991 & I'm glad I came back! In business since 1945... take some time to check out the old bar and tin ceiling, etc. I would go at an off time because it tends to get really crowded & I hate people! The coolest thing in the whole joint is the old beer cooler near the kitchen/ never seen anything like that. Ever. It's a burger joint and they do them well.. I would get the 1/2 pounder with grilled onions; it's excellent!
