We have been coming here for years and it never disappoints. Huge portions of fresh, delicious food. Having been here so often through the years, we have tried a large portion of the menu, and we would recommend it all. The mezza platters are great if you want variety or to try several new items at once. All of the meats are worth having too, beef, lamb, and chicken. The pizzas are good, and different than your usual fare. They also include pita bread the size of a pizza hot and fresh, complementary with the meal, and the hummus is worth paying for on the side. First time really eating Mediterranean food at a restaurant and it was pretty good! I got the Stephen's chicken and it was amazing and the saffron rice that came with it was pretty delicious! Oh and can't forget about the hot sauce!!!! The hot sauce was SOOO GOOD! I could eat it with anything. Service was okay. There was a few things that kind of bugged me. Our waiter didn't ask us if we wanted anything else to drink besides water but he asked the table next to us and he didn't ask if we wanted to order deserts but he asked the table next to us if they wanted deserts at the end of their meal. read more

We just moved across town, and we used to frequent the location in Hollywood. The pita is better here. It's more dense. Service is okay, but nonchalant. We were never asked about ordering drinks. They took orders from people that arrived after us, and those people received their food well before us. This was frustrating as it became very busy just after she took our orders and the wait time increased exponentially. I'm prangry. At 38 weeks pregnant, take my damn order within 5 minutes of being seated. There were at least 8 empty tables when we sat down. They also need to change their air filters. My family was in the area just for the afternoon and stumbled across this place. My mom has celiac and is gluten free so it is sometimes hard for her to find options when we are out to eat. This place had options that were gluten free without modifications and that in and of itself was a win. The food was also delicious, it was fresh and bright and obviously made with quality ingredients. This place really hit the spot and if I were local, I would definitely be returning. We had a chicken shawarma bowl, a chicken breast bowl, and falafel. All were great, but I recommend the falafel and the chicken breast bowl! read more

Ok so I've eaten here plenty of times and the food has always been delicious. However about a year ago I had an unpleasant experience which I detailed in my previous review. The restaurant reached out to me with a sincere apology and even sent me a gift certificate to give them another chance which is really cool and says a lot about their customer service! This is a new favorite for me. We tried Nicholas for the first time last weekend and now feel so foolish for having lived here for a year and a half and NOT already trying it. We were quickly greeted, on a very busy packed night, and seated. Maybe one minute after sitting down, we were brought a magnificent, gargantuan pita bread and some absolutely delicious herbed dipping oil. I filled up mostly on this. Not that it stopped me from eating everything else we ordered. I ordered the veggie kebab. My partner (Claire) ordered the kibbeh (accidentally- she had intended on steven's beef but inadvertently blurted out kibbeh- don't ask). We also ordered a gyro, just to see if it might be something we couldn't live without. My veggie kebabs are my absolute new favorite aside from Toro Bravo's coppa steak and anything at Sweet Lemon. She found her kibbeh to be okay, but preferred my veggie kebabs as well. The gyro was not the shining star of this operation. Really, it was the kebabs and that gorgeous pita that shine. Even the bed of saffron rice that my kebab was served with was delicious and I am not a rice person. I had a hard time NOT eating every single bite on my plate. Next time, we'll just stick to kebabs and pita, because they're that amazing. The service was wonderful. Great attitudes, quick, prompt service. It seems every time I want to check out the Gresham location, my friends always say, "I was there last week" or "I was there yesterday". After much delay, I picked up my friend and headed to downtown Gresham which in much aspect is its own little world. There are plenty of cafes and restaurants to check out, especially one of my favorite Lebanese restaurants in town. We were warmly greeted by the servers and sat towards the back. Mind ya this locale is not very big but wasn't super packed like its original location usually is. Within a couple of minutes the ultra light and flaky pita bread arrived fresh. The dipping sauce gave it a nice buttery texture and zing. Starved I was so we went for the meat mezza platter. It seemed they doubled in size since I've had one last and could easily feed more people if I wanted to share..... The food as always is delicious and filling. The extra hummus spread and yogurt always addicting to my palate. I liked how not all the food arrived all at once. The lamb pastry arrived first then the beef kabob. By the time that arrived I was about to say "game over" and packed the rest up to go. I love the staff too. They never once rushed us out the door which has happened in the past with the original location. They occasionally came by just to chat with us about the various discussions we were having with school and upcoming festivals in town. I certainly felt welcoming throughout my entire visit. It may be a ways out but just in case your in the neighborhood, this place certainly lives up to the name Nicholas. read more

It's a Lebanese reataraunt so it's going to taste different but even the iced tea was doused with what I believe to be cinnamon proving more strenuous than refreshing on a fairly warm day. Similarly, the rather good French fries were unevenly seasoned to where some fries were utterly plain and others were overwhelmed with spice, each grab of a fry was a mystery. I ordered veggie kabobs and the taste was interesting and appealing until I got to a potato that wasn't even close to being cooked. Game over that point, especially with a waiter who though oft wandering around, made us wait or flag him down for basic service. The pita bread taste and presentation was perfect. Found this little gem in historic main street of the little mountain town of Gresham. What was I doing in Gresham? My friend was looking for property there. I had my doubts at first. What kind of good food will be in Gresham? Good food! The ginormus pita breads patrons were eating caught our eyes and noses as we wandered through the old town. At the end of our day, those pizza sized puffy pitas beckoned us yonder. A complimentary pita starts you off. A tall pizza stand is placed on your table with a steaming hot puffy pita that has a really crispy grilled bottom. Mmm, the best part. There is an herbed olive oil for dipping also. This is a very good start. It was hard to narrow down what to order, so we opted for two of the Mezza meals to get a variety of things. My Lebanese Veggie Mezza came with hummus, cabbage rolls, kezzebah vegan pizza, libiya (green bean stew) and vegen Kibbeh for $12. Everything was delish. The vegan kibbeh was nothing like regular kibbeh, but quite tasty. The hummus was creamy textured with a nice balance between the tahini and garbanzos. My friend ordered the Lebanese Meat Mezza included hummus, tabouli, beef cabbage rolls, chicken pizza, freekah (smoked rice, pine nuts, and spices). The beef cabbage rolls were delish as well as this freekah stuff. We also tried a couple of the Lebanese drinks. Jallab (date juice) and a pomegranate drink. Oh my, the date drink was sooo good with a bit of club soda for fizzle and a touch of rose water. It was a good amount of food for the price. If we weren't getting on a plane after our meal, we could have taken home leftovers for lunch the next day. Alas, we sadly left our remains. They do not like serving families of color. We waited over 40mins for food and service, while we watched guests that came in 20 mins after be provided much better and faster service. We were just left there, no check ins, no nothing. Then when I asked what was going on, they offered us Baklava and threw their hands up in the air. We found Nicholas via Yelp while driving from Multnomah Falls to Seattle and stopped for a lunch/dinner, don't know, but we arrived at 5pm. It is situated in the Gresham downtown and parking is on the streets. Since it was an odd time for a meal, there just one other family inside the restaurant. They have a small outdoor seating area as well. We ordered Babaganoush for appetizers and a Beef Kabab for entree. In a few minutes, a huge pita bread arrived. It was fresh, hot and tasted like heaven. Babaganoush was good too! Then came our entree, with a side of salad. The rice was divine, period! The portion is big enough and my husband and I couldn't finish it though we came to the restaurant with a growling stomach. Very good service. Great food. What a great little place in Gresham. I was in town and needed to get something to take out for dinner this place came highly recommended to me for their fresh and delicious Lebanese food. I went in and asked if they did take out and the wait staff was very helpful with suggestions of what to get. I ordered the kabobs and a mezze which is a combo platter which came with hummus and other delights. They gave me an iced tea to have while I waited and gave me one to go when my order came up. I had to make about a 40 minute drive to my destination and everything looked and tasted great. I will definitely be back to try them out again. I keep making the mistake of going here by myself for lunch....the mistake being the pita bread they bring out complimentary is enough to feed a family of 4. Then of course I have to order the Stephen's Chicken Plate that for some reason I get cravings for every couple of weeks. Then I have left overs for about 3 days. All of the food here is delicious. So far I've been happy with everything that I've tried.....but there's just something about the chicken and rice goodness of that Stephen's Chicken Plate. The restaurant is very small and tends to fill up quickly. The staff is friendly and accommodating. The biggest downside to this restaurant is that it's in Gresham....and it's better than any of the Lebanese restaurants in Portland. read more

Nicholas is by far the BEST Mediterranean restaurant I've been to in the entire Portland Metro area. I usually end up eating family-style when I go to Nicholas because I want to eat a little bit of everything on their menu. Their hummus and pita bread are delicious. Lived up to the great reviews. They first serve a delicious and humongous hot pita as an appetizer. I went for lunch so I ordered a chicken and rice bowl from the lunch menu. The rice was just amazing. It also had chickpeas, kale and quinoa. I wasn't fond of the huge dollop of the very strong garlic sauce on top and there wasn't a whole lot of chicken. Buut all still a very tasty combo. I just picked at the sauce but next time I'll just get it on the side. I will be back to try more items on the menu, especially the dinner. read more

Our party seemed to agree that the NE Portland location seems a little better. The Lebanese bread is to die for. In terms of the food I can't speak to it fully. We ordered the gyro. I love gyros, and this is not the place for that. The meat is a little bland, the bread was hard, and you barely get any meat. I ate a bunch of bread and vegetables halfway through the sandwich. That was disappointing at the price.However, our server was ok. He wasn't rude but he didn't check on us at all. Everyone else seemed to be getting a refresh on bread, he never asked us. This place is great. I love a place where you can start eating the moment you sit down with a monsterous sized pita bread and oil for dipping. I've had the Lamp Gyro and Lamp Skewers and both times we've been here the food was amazing. I even tried their Turkish Cold Brew and loved it. They have a sign-in sheet at the door, but the staff doesn't go off that and seats whoever happens to be there and everytime I have been there it gets messed up and someone who came after gets seated first. I can't tell you how happy I am that we only live a couple miles from this restaurant!! I may not write any more reviews after this because I can't think of any new restaurant I want to try vs. trying out the rest of the menu here. Very rarely can my family go out to eat and have everyone love their food and have a great server to boot. Fortunately for us, we had one of those joyously rare occasions a couple evenings ago at Nicholas Restaurant. Honestly, we were surprised, because with my husband being Macedonian, and me being Greek, most Middle Eastern and Eastern European restaurants are too bland for us since they tone down their recipes to please the general public, leaving you missing on a lot of lovely bold flavors. They don't tone anything down here, which is why I'm sure we'll quickly become regulars. Our waiter was Josh, and upon hearing it was our first time to the restaurant, he took the time to describe differences between various menu items we were curious about, even making recommendations on how we could change-up our orders to our liking. He was spot-on, and we loved everything!! We will gladly wait to sit in Josh's section on future visits, even if there are tables elsewhere available immediately. As most have mentioned, the huge pita they bring to the table is fresh and soft, and very addicting. The dipping oil (Zaatar) is also very good. You could make a meal out of this alone, but then you would really miss out on the good stuff. Iced Turkish Coffee = Nectar of the Gods!! Strong, but a little sweet. I'm having this every visit. My husband enjoyed the menu version of Chicken Schwarma. I tried Josh's recommendation, substituting Tzatziki and adding feta and cucumber, which was fantastic. One more thing I will definitely order again. Even over the brighter flavors of the Tzatziki and feta, I could still taste the spices on the chicken. Note their portions are very generous - I was stuffed before I was halfway through mine. Toum is a garlic/olive oil/lemon appetizer (or side if you only want a little) that is every bit as garlicky as we were promised. It is great on the pita they bring to your table, but it becomes the crowning jewel if you add some to your Shwarma. Our son liked his sesame pizza, and asked that I return to get more for him because he absolutely loved it cold for breakfast the next day. Bottom line, we were there Friday, and we are ordering take-out from them tonight (Sunday). We're hooked. read more

Been here ages ago and was excited to try it again after the remodeling. There was a group of us for a friends bday. They have a small selection of foods but dishes looked tasty and mine was pretty good-I also ordered something to go and asked for a separate check for all my food. Which I didn't get and my friend paid for all- even while I kept telling the waiter excuse me excuse me I asked for my own check- she totally ignored me standing right across me! Anyhow the biggest deal was the dirty dishes! I'm not kidding. I wish we took pictures!!! There was a chunk of onion stuck to the plates that were stacked and put on our table. Out of 8 maybe 1-2 were usable but with water stains, others had odd spots of dirt or food idk. I'd prefer a plate when the breads come out cuz it was weird to hold bread in your hand. After we got the food is when they brought small plates (dirty ones) also few of us had to ask for silverware. Just tried it. Easily a 4 Star restaurant. My wife and I love Mediterranean cuisine and this is very well done. We shared the vegetarian mezza plate and each item was superb. We took our mom to this place and decided to order a couple different mezza plates so she could try a umber of different dishes. We also got a chicken kabob where we got to choose either breast or thigh meat. Our server, Bri, was amazing. She was patient, understanding that mom needed a bit more time to understand, kept our water glasses filled, checked back yet never rushed us. The food was great!
