I called Steinhardt Imports in Valparaiso, spoke with the owner, John, and scheduled an oil change. Chris, the mechanic and John's son, took care of it on the spot and at a fair price. I also had a yellow warning light on. It turned out to be a tire-pressure sensor issue. A previous dealer had set the computer to 26 psi front and 26 psi rear, even though the door sticker called for 26 front and 32 rear. Chris recalibrated it correctly and walked me through everything he was doing. That kind of transparency builds trust. Two days later, John called about a Mercedes-Benz safety recall on the car: #2018060010, Smart Fortwo Model 451, 2008-2009, requiring replacement of the damping in the rear engine compartment. Because Smart cars have not been sold in the U.S. since 2017, he was told a free recall repair was unlikely. He quoted about $400. I said I would schedule soon do to the fact my wife was traveling. Several days later, John called again. He had spent hours over three days, unpaid, looking for a better answer. He found that Mercedes-Benz of Jacksonville, a former authorized Smart dealer that still works on these cars, could perform the recall at no cost. I cannot think of many shops that would ever invest that kind of time just to save a customer money. I told John I used to own many German cars over 15-years in Los Angeles before moving to Florida and that I never used dealerships because of the cost. He laughed and told me about a BMW customer who recently came in after a dealer quoted him $4,000 to replace an oil pan. Once the car was on the lift, they cleaned the pan and found a loose bolt that only needed a turn with a torque wrench. That customer avoided a $4,000 bill. John and Chris treated me with honesty, integrity, and respect. That is rare. If you own an import, skip the dealer markup and take it to Steinhardt Imports.

John and Chris got my active handling sorted, fixed my AC and buttoned up a few fluid leaks for 1/2 what I had read was possible. They will honestly let you know what needs replacing and your full range of options. If you want reliable and honest work, check out Stinehardt. The dealership may be faster, but you will pay 2-3x for it.

Finding an honest, local mechanic is like finding gold. Finding an honest, local mechanic of…read moreEuropean and Asian vehicles......PRICELESS! That is how I would characterize L'Orange Auto. I cannot begin to tell you what a huge relief it is to have this fantastic repair shop so close to home. Men: I know you feel what I am saying here. Robert and Dennis have been working on all three of my Diesel Volkswagens for 5 years now. I rest peacefully at night knowing that when I drop my car off, they will: 1. Find the issue. 2. Call you (not the other way around) to tell you what the issue is, how much its going to cost, and how long it will take. 3. Be 100% friendly and professional with you throughout the entire process. 4. Will almost always repair your car at jaw-dropping discounted rates as compared to the stealership. (Never mind the fact that I have absolutely zero faith in VW at this point and would not so much as let them change my oil). One look at their super clean and organized front desk and maintenance bay reassures you that your expensive import is in very good hands. By clean, I mean I literally DEFY you to find a cleaner, more organized shop. Their bay is as clean as my Mom's kitchen floor. Its crazy. This is a sign of a very conscientious mechanic. For any real man looking on Yelp in search of local word of mouth on a solid local european vehicle mechanic, I really should have had you way back at that part about their honesty. The rest is icing on the cake. I truly cannot say enough good about these guys and their business. They get 10 stars out of 5 in my book. I refer every friend I have who owns an import. I know you will do the same.

Back in March, Nextdoor recommended this dealership, so I reached out to schedule an oil change. I called again in May and never received a response. I've also called multiple times last month and again this month, leaving voicemails, and they still haven't returned my calls or responded to my emails. As someone who is new to the area and a military spouse, this has been extremely frustrating. If you're new to the area or military, I would definitely recommend finding another shop. I've now had to drive all the way to Pensacola just to get a simple oil change, which will probably end up being cheaper than dealing with a company that won't even return a phone call. Very disappointing experience, especially for someone just trying to find a reliable European car mechanic in the area.

By the end of the third week I called again and Scotty said he had big jobs that needed to go, so early next week. Ok. Fourth week, Wednesday I called and he said he hadn't looked at it yet but had me on schedule for Monday of fifth week. This is my only car, and Scotty was recommended by someone I trust, so I gave him the benefit of the doubt. Wednesday of the fifth week he told me he was dealing with an issue on his lift but he was about to put my car on the rack. After work I drive by and see my car hasn't moved since it was dropped off. At this point Scotty decides to tell me he has a lot of big jobs and doesn't know when he'd get to my car. So not only had he lied week after week, he also wasted my time when I trusted he would get it done. I had my car towed to playground automotive in FWB and they diagnosed, order parts and fixed the clutch in 2 days. If he didn't want to work on my vehicle he could have told me before the fifth week. I was completely nice and respectful and he just kept lying. Bad bussiness, wasted my time which is also my money. Lady at the counter was nice enough although it is unfortunate this is the shop she works at.
