One of my favorite ice cream places. I enjoy their different flavors. Although, if you have a favorite flavor, it is difficult to get it again, as their flavors rotate. They're really great about letting you try the different flavors. My kids also enjoy watching the smoke from the dry ice as they make it. read more

3.5*. I first encountered Nice Cream at a yelp event in Kimberly's DC event and I was completely sold. I completely forgot about them because they did not open shop at least 1 year after the event, but a random yelp search of shops in Arlington brought back memories of the sweet, rich ice cream that was created using liquid nitrogen. The use of liquid nitrogen is not new as it has been used extensively (e.g. Voltaggio) by chefs around the world and in the DC area. However, the density and the texture of the ice cream is an uncommon characteristic of ice creams in the DC area and it's something that I think most will savor. I tried the coconut and pear ice cream and as expected, it was rich, flavorful, dense and had the texture that I remembered from the yelp event. After trying their regular sized scoop, and eating a decent portion of it, I found it to be too sweet and dense in larger portions. It's at least a grade or two sweeter and two times denser than the average ice cream. If you like really sweet ice creams then this is for you. As for the density, this is akin to eating Thai Jasmine rice instead of regular grain (japanese/korean rice). If you start eating as much as a normal ice cream you'll feel bloated because of the density. The next time I visit with anyone wishing to purchase, I will limit myself to samples since that will be the right portion size for myself. That being said, I'm almost certain I'm the exception rather than the norm and that most people will not encounter this issue I described. read more

I wanted to like it as much as the other Yelp reviewers but it fell short. Firstly, they only have 6 flavors at a time, and only change them once a week. The flavors were pretty plain, 2 of them being vanilla and chocolate sea salt (which was basically just chocolate). The ice cream is very smooth, but SUPER heavy and rich. The consistency is also extremely thick... much thicker than any ice cream I've had lately. It was hard to even get a scoop on the spoon. I wasn't too impressed by the flavors and really found the ice cream too rich to finish (and that's saying a lot since I have a huge sweet tooth and looove chocolate desserts). The one really great thing about Nicecream is that they have warm brownie or cookie sundae options as well as an ice cream cookie option (although the only flavor cookie they have is chocolate chip... it'd be nice if they stocked other flavors like toffee, peanut butter, or even just sugar cookies). I ordered a nutella ice cream brownie sundae. One of the friends I was with ordered a chocolate sea salt ice cream brownie... Somehow the employees confused the two and handed me the chocolate flavor. Not knowing, I started eating that sundae... Until I saw the slightly lighter shade of the nutella flavor and realized that I'd been handed the wrong order. It's pretty hard to share ice cream with people as it gets all melty and gross fast, and so this made it difficult to switch our ice creams back and the employees did not offer to give us new, correct orders when they noticed the mix-up. The shop was completely empty at that time and I found this a little off putting. All-in-all, I'm not impressed with the flavor options, taste, or service and will probably opt for a different place next time I'm craving ice cream. read more

After reading reviews, I was certain that I would leave here rating this place at least 4 or 5 stars...but unfortunately, I can't. When I review, I take everything into account...taste, service and most importantly, overall customer experience. I will start off by setting up the scenario...It was around 9:30pm on Saturday evening...that awkward time after dinner and before hitting the bars, where businesses are not the busiest. There was one couple in front of our party and no one behind us. When we walked in, the White couple (I am only mentioning race indicators because we are in Clarendon and no one in our party was White) in front of us was offered a sample of every flavor before deciding what to purchase. When it came to our party, no one was offered a sample, and when we did ask for samples, the attitude of Sandra Tran (who is one of the owners based on my excellent google skills) changed and not in a good way. She came off annoyed and as if it was a burden to give us samples. Furthermore, our party ordered a total of three separate orders, all in one form of payment. Two of the orders were decided and I was deciding on my order based on a sample of the Vanilla-which they did not have readily so I waited to taste it before I decided. The two girls working the mixers asked the cashier, Sandra, what the last order was since she didn't write it on the bottom of the cup. Then Sandra rolled her eyes and replied with an attitude in her tone, "she's waiting to taste the Vanilla." If you guys have a problem with people sampling your ice cream, then don't offer any samples! But according to your website and Instagram and Facebook, you encourage people to stop in, even if its just to sample. And I can understand if people come in and try 10 samples and leave without buying anything, this can be frustrating (although you should never show your frustration in front of the customer), however I already paid! So what is the problem? This is not to mention the fact that the party before us was overwhelmed with sampling. It truly felt petty of Sandra-one of the owners, to act this way, and I felt like it was an attempt to embarrass me, maybe? And that doesn't fly with me. Or maybe, we weren't the type of clientele she wanted? Or maybe we were the type of clientele she didn't feel the need to impress? Whatever it is, I don't know, but I will make sure that other Yelpers are aware-and maybe it happened to them to but they let it go. Too often, we people do let it go, and then people like Sandra feel like its okay to treat different customers differently. What's most shocking to me is that she is one of the owners, and her attitude is not a good reflection of the business and the brand. read more

I was extremely disappointed. I came here on my birthday for a treat. I had high expectations given I had just visited Nice Modern Creamery in MI, they set the bar HIGH. I had the mint ice cream brownie sundae. After spending $8 and barely eating half, I tossed it in the trash. The ice cream had absolutely no flavor at all. All I could taste was ice and the brownie. I even stopped eating/mixing the brownie with the ice cream so I could get a taste of the flavors and that's when it became apparent that all it was, was spun ice with no flavor made to look like ice cream. read more

I'm really glad to see this NIcecream continuing their success. I remember seeing their booth during the Downtown holiday Market in my first year living in DC before they had an actual store. At that time, I got the gingerbread flavor, which was awesome so I bought home a pint and devoured it immediately. Now they have an actual store in Claredon, which is clean, bright, and pleasant. Come for the gimmick, stay for the excellent ice cream. The pistachio flavor, which uses pistachio butter, is off the charts good. All the flavors I've tried are creamy and ultra-smooth and not too sweet. For a healthier option, they have a banana whip, which is also excellent - just mashed bananas flash frozen and whipped up to resemble ice cream. (On tip to the proprietors: I've had banana whip at a little place in Philly before and somehow theirs is a bit smoother.) Still, 5 stars for sure. read more

Ahh where do i even begin?! This is by far my favorite local ice cream place. At first, I thought that it was simply an ice cream store with a unique concept that only offers your average tasting ice cream (i.e. dipping dots). However, I was definitely proven wrong! At first it may seem expensive, but for the quality and unique flavors you are getting it is definitely worth it. Also, some flavors are pretty creamy and heavy so even a small can be too much! What I love about Nicecream Factory is: 1) their fresh ingredients 2) their unique flavors 3) how smooth and creamy their ice cream is Flavors I've tried and fell in love with: 1) Strawberry Basil - I'm not the biggest fan of strawberry ice cream, but nicecream gave a refreshing twist to your classic flavor by adding basil, and boy is it delicious! Perfect flavor for the summer :) 2) Pistachio - I LOVE pistachio. Because pistachio is one of the harder flavors to make well, I like to try every ice cream store's pistachio flavored ice cream to determine whether the place is good or not, and yes, nicecream succeeded. This pistachio ice cream is probably the most authentic tasting pistachio flavored ice cream i've ever had. It even has small, grinded, chunks of pistachio in it. It is a great blend of sweet and salty (from the pistachio). I definitely recommend this flavor! However, it is pretty heavy and creamy so I recommend getting a small. 3) Strawberry Fields - Although not better than their strawberry basil, this one was fresh and yummy! 4) Lemony jenny - Lemonades, lemon flavored italian ice, lemon gelato, etc. all are great ways to refresh yourself in the heat, and the lemony jenny delivers this promise! It even has fresh lemon zest in it ! Mmhhhhh This place changes flavors everyday and supposedly has over 50 flavors...which means I'll be making repeated trips this summer, let's just hope my wallet won't be broke by the end of it ! read more

This place has gone down and quickly! Only a little over a year old at Clarendon and the environment has changed for the worse. I had come to this place a few times and there is a negative vibe coming off the workers (are they over worked?). Their attitudes bring down the once lovely and bright environment and I guess because of certain people coming to this joint. I will back them up and will state that there have been butt munchers here complaining about the amount of ice cream and to be honest you're getting a good deal for the amount of ice cream you are getting. This one couple in particular weren't only irritating the workers but everyone else. The wife was whining about how they got too much ice cream every few seconds because they had bought four ice creams (each a regular size: two for the kids and two between her husband and herself). It was a constant complaint: "God this is so much ice cream" blah blah blah. After what seemed to be the worst her bratty children start playing the game of how far they could get away with their irritating games. It ended with a glass bottle falling to the ground, shattering, and the contents spilling over the place. Of the course the workers wanted to give her a piece of their mind, but casually cleaned the mess up. The woman was ashamed of her children, but she still carried her entitled butt around for another few minutes and left. The poor workers are driven mad because of poor customers and annoying children (there should be a sign: keep children outside and on leashes (tee hee!)) and "don't complain in the store, you're bringing down the "nice" in Nicecream. Instead of writing [regular: two flavors, small: one flavor] it should say: [regular: two flavors, three scoops, small: one flavor, two scoops]. Also you need to ask which flavor we want more when it comes to choosing the regular size. I hope the environment will improve. I truly miss going to this place and seeing a smile on the workers faces, and seeing how happy they were to work at Nicecream. read more

ahh, at last found my favorite ice cream shop in dc! love love love LOVE that they source all cream/milk/fruits locally and that they make their ice cream with liquid nitrogen right in front of you. while eating my ice cream, I had such a blissful moment of seeing little kids screaming with happiness at liquid nitrogen gas spilling everywhere on the floor of the store. I'm quite picky with my ice cream but I'd give nicecream an A+, with its creamy but dense texture. they don't have a big selection of flavors which I actually really appreciate (but you might not like that) -- the cookie butter kind is delicious (but can get a bit too sweet), and I really liked the grapefruit creamsicle I tried as its flavors are very subtle. can't wait till I come back here! read more

It's just so good! I have no complaints about the ice cream itself. It's creamy, and probably the best ice cream I have ever had. You can't get anything like it anywhere around here to my knowledge. You can tell that all the ingredients are fresh, and it makes a huge difference. The one thing I will note is that it sometimes gets a little scattered in there... I ordered a regular today, but I'm fairly certain after seeing others get a small, that they accidently gave me a small. Only noticed this after my boyfriend and I had almost finished it, so we didn't say anything but that was disappointing. I went another time with a friend and I got my ice cream right away (it was already made), but she didn't get hers until I was almost done. I guess you just need to understand that because it is "made to order," if your flavor is avaliable and a friend's has to be made, there will be a difference in wait time. All and all, I'll go back, just making sure I double check my size. The people who work there are so friendly, and I know that if I had brought it to their attention they would have made it right today. I still can't wait to go back and try new flavors! read more

Three stars in my opinion is generous but that may just be personal preference. Overpriced and only 6 rotating flavors. Although the ice cream was creamy and had a nice texture, I found it to be incredibly sticky and leaving my mouth so noticeably dry. There are no options for cones (that I saw) and the spoon that you receive is literally one of those small taste testing spoons. The options to add brownies, bananas, etc and the extensive list of hot drinks is a nice touch. Not to mention when my gelato go-to "boccato" (not too far down the street) is closed it seems like nicecream is always open. Overall I would not go back again. read more

ABSOLSUTELY AMAZING ICE (nice) CREAM! First off, they make it in front of you. It's fresh, they change up flavors every month/week or so, so it's always fun to try something new. They allow you to test any flavor before buying and they have AMAZING staff: great attitudes (particularly the guy who usually works register). The owner (or at least one of them) is the nicest woman, and she's very pleasant If you're ever around her. She's personable and is very down to earth. They have a great community feel and have really taken off. It's great to see them doing well. It's pricy but well worth the money and wait. BUT: They can't seem to figure out their flavor pairing options. I've gone when they first opened and they will let me mix and match whatever, but they don't anymore I understand it's for their time management and to help things be less confusing but honestly its been a transition. read more

Using liquid nitrogen to freeze the cream makes for a really creamy, not icy consistency that is just dreamy. The Nutella and Pistachio flavors are to die for! Lovely staff, delicious product. As some other people mentioned, it IS a smaller list of flavors, but the fact that they source locally and make everything fresh makes up for that. Such an interesting experience. If you've never seen ice cream made this way, you have to go. They also had really interesting flavors which all sounded good (if you're looking for basic chocolate and vanilla, look elsewhere). They have a pear flavor and an apple pie flavor. I got a salted caramel and a chai flavor and was very satisfied. The woman actually messed up my order at first and when she saw my confusion she immediately offered to make me another one even though I wasn't even going to mention the mistake. Great Ice Cream shop with a unique twist. Haven't heard about Nitrogen Ice Cream? Neither did I until I saw a story in the News about nitrogen ice cream shops being a new thing on the west coast. So after a simple google search I found the Nicecream factory. Located in Arlington's Clarendon district the Nicecream Factory brings a fun way to enjoy getting a scoop of ice cream. They use all fresh ingredients to create a blend of flavors and mixes. For the nerd in me I was intrigued because its all done by using Liquid Nitrogen to freeze the mix. Bottom line its a great nerdy treat. Be adventurous and try this shop. read more
