I've visited Nitrogen ice cream and coffee places before and didn't really get the hype so I went with zeroooo expectations. I WAS WRONG! Nicecream makes creamy and fresh nitrogen ice cream without the gummy and sticky texture that I despise. The limited flavors helps them to focus on the quality of each mix and also helps customers like me to decide on a flavor. The friendly lady behind the counter gave me the run down on how they make the ice cream and offered samples of everything on the menu. I was blown away by the bananas foster and pistachio for the intense flavors and I thought the little mix-ins were a great touch for texture and additional flavors. I also really enjoyed Orange is the new black which was an orange sorbet with dark chocolate pieces. They have different kitchen-aid looking mixers that hold the ice cream and the containers aren't that big. It makes me question how efficient the process is when it's hot outside and the lines get longer. I visited on a winter evening which allowed me to try everything and ask all my questions without feeling pressured. This is an interesting place. First, the ice cream is pretty decent. They have a gimmicky way of making it - right as you watch. They put all the ingredients in a mixing bowl, blend it, add something very cold (liquid nitrogen?) that freezes it into ice cream. It takes a little longer than just scooping/serving, and it's $pendy. But it's interesting. We went on a very unbusy day - we were the only customers at first, someone came in after us. It still took a while for two orders - we didn't mind because we weren't in a hurry, but it makes me wonder what it's like on a hot weekend day. It is not cheap. I bought a pint to take back to family members. Would have bought two pints, but I wasn't going to spend the bucks. Like I said, the flavors are a bit limited, but we did have banana cream and chocolate coconut, and they are very good (very rich). Nicecream is SO good. If you're looking for super rich, flavorful ice cream, this is it. It's more like gelato in consistency and definitely creamier than your average scoop. They rotate the flavors pretty frequently which is great if you want to try some seasonal varieties. However, you may end up going at a time when you're favorite flavor isn't on the menu (i.e. Nutella, the best flavor in my opinion). I also highly recommend trying the affogato here. I ordered the nicecream sandwhich with milk chocolate chunks in it. The cookie didn't really taste as sweet as I'd like it to however. The use of the nitrogen was cool and the vanilla ice cream was pretty average, though, it definitely didn't taste straight out of a machine. The milk chocolate chunks were the worst part of the dish. They were hard and unnecessary. My takeaways: a regular ice cream sandwhich would taste better than this. I might come back to try the sundae, but not this one. Final rating: 3 stars. read more

I've been a big fan of Nicecream Factory ever since they started with a pop up at Science Club last year. I had a hard time making it to all of their scheduled days so I am so glad that they finally have their very own brick and mortar so I can satisfy my Nice Cream obsession any time of day. The process is simple. Walk in and choose from their flavors of the day. They will write your name on a paper cup and then the magic happens. A little bit of liquid nitrogen, some premium ingredients and Ta-Da! You have a free show to go along with your frozen treat. While Nicecream is definitely a novelty type deal, the flavor of the ice cream truly stands a part on it's own. They use high quality, local ingredients and no weird preservatives or colorings (which unfortunately are commonplace at most ice cream stores). I dream about their Strawberry Thai Basil ice cream at night...I even tried to make my own version at home using organic ingredients and it just didn't live up to Nice Cream. I wish I loved Nicecream Factory like everyone else! I remember being introduced to them at one of the Yelp events, so I was pretty excited when I stumbled upon their location after grabbing some brunch. NF is all about using locally-sourced ingredients and nitrogen gas to create an instant scoop of ice cream when you order. They change their flavors once a week, starting on Monday, and when I was there, they had only 3 available - the Vanilla Bean, the Dark Chocolate, and the Grandma's Peach Pie (the other flavors, Purely Pistachio, Lemon Meringue Pie, and the Apple Pi were just non-existent). I tried the Grandma's Peach Pie, and the ice cream itself was smooth - I just wished it had either chunks of peach pie throughout rather than the heavy focus on the 'milkiness' of it. I would love to come back earlier in the week when they have other flavors, perhaps something more citrus-y. Nice little ice cream shop in the heart of Clarendon. We decided to try some ice cream made with liquid nitrogen on the spot. We ordered the Bee My Honey (lavender and honey) flavor and it did not disappoint! The ice cream was silky smooth, dense, and creamy. The flavor of lavender and honey made the ice cream taste like a delicious lavender milk tea. Yum. Two JMU grads both ages 24 years old decided they wanted to open up an ice cream shop in Clarendon. Not just any ice cream shop mind you; an ice cream shop that uses liquid nitrogen to create your special treat. I got their lemon blackberry ice cream. The lemon is subtle, but a perfect blend with just the right consistency and balance of flavor. I ordered a regular size which cost $6.59 with tax included. Money well spent considering this was a cheat day for me to indulge in some yummy goodness. This place is definitely a hit. There was a line out the door with both families and people that were on dates. I rolled in solo, and didn't have to wait very long to get my order taken. Located right by Whole Foods and Clarendon's little shopping area, Nicecream is the perfectly placed ice cream shop that pulls in all kinds of people. It's perfect meeting spot. It's also certainly an added perk and coolness factor that the ice cream is made from liquid nitrogen. Super fun to watch for kids and adults alike! I've been here a few times but most recently was here on nice weekend afternoon. Usually during the summer the shop is packed with families and groups of people looking to beat the heat, but the seating area was surprisingly clean. There are usually six flavors in rotation and they're seasonal, but some notable flavors I've had are peach, blueberry, and cookie butter. My favorite thing about these flavors is that they are pretty real and natural. You can watch them mix your dessert to order if you're lucky and you can see the pieces of fruit and everything going into the mixer which I think is really cool. This is especially great for the seasonal fruit flavors! The texture of the ice cream is great too. Its incredibly smooth, which I LOVE for the richer flavors (like chocolate or cookie butter). This is not your average mean liquid nitrogen ice cream shop. It's nicer than most and it's whipping out ice cream on the spot with fresh ingredients with the aid of liquid nitrogen! My first encounter with this concept was at Smitten Ice Cream in San Francisco. After coming back home, I was determined to find this stuff again. I've been to a few places where the consistency, texture and flavor were off and it just wasn't the same. I consider this an art and there's a recipe to creating creamy, cold and flavorful sweetness. You can't just pour a bunch of ingredients in the kitchen aid with liquid nitrogen and expect magic to happen. Like I said, there's a skill. Nicecream is probably the best I've searched in the DMV thus far with this form of art. Though the ice cream isn't as creamy and flavorful as smitten, where you get the punch of every fresh ingredient, it's still tasty and satisfies my sweet spot. The texture of the ice cream here is almost chewy, which is unique to me but fun to enjoy. I've tried the honey lavender, lemony Jenny monthly special and peaches & cream. My favorite? The honey lavender! I could taste the fresh blend of lavender and honey. It also has a more chewy texture compared to the other two flavors, which makes the ice cream more fun to eat. I had been to this place many times with friends but never actually tried anything. Today I decided to see what all the hype was and I was not disappointed. I personally am not a big fan of ice cream, but this place has given me a new liking for ice cream. The concept of nitrogen made ice cream is really cool also. I had gotten the Salted Caramel. The ice cream was not overly sweetened and the Caramel was well blended into the ice cream. The ice cream felt lighter than the ice cream I was used to from the grocery store. It is a little pricey compared to other stores but well worth it. I would highly recommend trying this place. The flavors they offer are creative and they change monthly. The only thing I wasn't too keen on were the limited number of ice cream flavor options. I could understand why since ice cream were made in the KitchenAid mixer with nitrogen tubes attached to each and they only have a select few of those. Only a few ingredients go into making the ice cream and they make it on the spot so you know it's fresh and good. It's definitely less creamy and/or fluffy than typical ice cream parlor ice cream, and thicker. I'd say it's the taffy version of ice cream. So what flavors to get? Avoid the thin mint. I love my thin mints as anyone who knows me can attest, but this was more mint than anything. Like just pure mint. It was almost like eating toothpaste flavored ice cream. The samoa was much better. Cooking with chemistry! Nicecream Factory brings out the science nerd in me. Their website succinctly explains it so: nitrogen gas enters liquid state at -321°F. When liquid nitrogen is put into the mixer, it freezes the cream and begins evaporating. Once the liquid evaporates, which takes about 10 seconds, you've got ice cream. This super cold freezing process has the ability to make a smaller ice crystal and that means a smoother product. It's actually a pretty straightforward process if you have the right equipment and there's nothing new about making ice cream from liquid nitrogen. It is still a fairly novel concept in D.C., as there is only one other place that makes ice cream from liquid nitrogen here (Faithfully Sweet). Everyone, from young children to older adults, was watching, eyes affixed to the mixers as the process unfolded like a choreographed dance. There's just something cool (pun intended) when you see clouds of vapor pour out of the mixer. It's not just ice cream, it's also a show. From the vapor rises a cup of luscious, smooth ice cream. The combination of fresh, local ingredients and liquid nitrogen science is a winner in the midst of Arlington Although I was hoping to try their strawberry basil, which everyone raves about when they talk about Nicecream, I settled for a small cup of the strawberry flavor. Delicious! The texture was creamy and smooth and the ice cream tasted very fresh. I'm kind of torn on what to really think of this pace, so I guess I'll start slow in this review. Let's go to the basics: the ice cream. I got the spiced vanilla and totally forgot the other flavor I had... the reason being because yes, it was just THAT forgettable. However, that spiced vanilla was pretty damn good. I don't think I could find that anywhere else in stores or any place of convenience. I didn't think I would like it but hey, I did. The ice cream portion was rather small but it was pretty thick and creamy so I guess quality over quantity yeah? Now my gripes...well for once, the male cashier/server/whatever had some weird air to him that made me feel like he didn't want to be there and it really made me annoyed by his presence. Like I didn't want him making my ice cream. He kinda added to this whole air of pretentiousness that this place brings and well, yeah, it really annoyed me. The price of the ice cream of course adds on to this air because it was what, almost 6 dollars for 2 small scoops of ice cream? I pay the same price for 2.5x amount of substance in gelato down in ATX, with no compromise in quality of product..but that's gelato vs ice cream so I guess it's different. I mean I get that you're using N straight from the tanks and that's expensive but if they're doing it for the entertainment, you can barely see anything that's going on as it's just vapor rising as they pour in the N...so...why? I do admit it's a cool idea but I just don't think it's working with me. I probably won't be coming back again but I still give the store credit for their bombass spice vanilla flavor and pretty innovative idea in making ice cream with Nitrogen and doing it in front of the customers, but altogether it just doesn't cut it for me. It's just ice cream y'all. 6.5/10, probably wouldn't come again but WOULD recommend to a friend after explaining the basics. read more
