Nextdoor is my go to hang out spot for nightlife. What I Love is The entrance. From the street, the view into the space is blocked by wall. But the moment you walk around the wall you are blown away by the high ceilings, exposed brick walls, large stage, DJ booth, seating areas, full bar, and a newly installed dance floor. There's art on the wall for sale and badass panda art mural high up on the brick. It's so hip. So airy. The sound system is amazing. Parking: street or there's a small pay yourself parking lot located behind the building. They do tow. Bar: wide selection, Marty is one of the bartenders and that mans a magical bar creatures who can create any drink your heart desires! They always turn out delicious! Michael is one of the owners, and you'd normally see him around, probably out front, way cool, chill and always has a friendly smile. You probably have seen him if not, go say hi! Check out the space. I've gone there on a few different nights. What I love if they got a different them for the different nights, so contact them before that or check their website for events. They always got different genres play, alt Wednesday's, Zouk/RNB Thursday's, live bands etc. they also host special events. If you are looking for event space. I highly recommend. Come here for the vibe, stay 'cause you're sloshed on Chernobyls. While I'm sure this place didn't invent Chernobyls, they might as well have 'cause that's the only place that actually knows what they are and I discovered them here. They are dangerous as they sound. And they glow in blacklight! Fun! I've come here for a variety of different events, from cool indie bands to slammin techno DJs, this is the place to go in Hawaii. Parking can be challenging if you're new to the Chinatown scene, but if you plan to leave before 12, then park in municipal parking. If you want more time freedom, then park at Mark's Garage or next to Mark's Garage in the open air parking lot. Bring cash for that and for your entry fee. check the website for info, as the cover charge changes depending on what night it is and the event. Usually weeknight's it's free before a certain time (like 10) and is around $5 after that. On weekends it can vary from $5 all the way up to around $30 depending on who it's for. The drinks are decently priced, you can get those Chernobyls for about $8 which is great 'cause they're pretty strong. Tip the bartenders well, they're awesome people! If you're there on a crowded night it'll be hard to get a seat, but if you go with a few people it's possible to wait around and kinda pounce your way onto the corner couches in the front (comfortable couches!!!) The decor is great, it's an old warehouse where the second floor has been removed to give it greater space (which is awesome 'cause it's never too hot in there, plus there's a door that's eerily high off the ground) . Exposed brick walls, and in the spots where there's bricks missing they've put little tealight candles. So cute. Yea, i said cute. The bathrooms can be a little offsetting, they're usually set up to be unisex, so you'll walk in and have a guy walk out...not so great if you want complete privacy (of course there are doors on the stalls so it's not like you're doing that in front of others). Plus there's not always soap, so check on the other side if they have any. If not I recommend bringing hand sanitizer. The music here is so diverse but it's awesome every single time I come. If you're visiting Hawaii and want something that's not touristy at all, come check this place out. But leave the socks & sandals in the hotel, okay? read more

I went to the Kina Grannis concert here...and yes, it was my fault for standing RIGHT by the speakers, but ....I was standing right by the speakers the whole show. So I couldn't really enjoy it. I wish they had seats....the stadium kine where it's elevated towards the back...so that everyone can see. Yes, in a dream world. The bathroom situation totally threw me off. It's coed. And there's small pukas that people can look inside to see if anyone is inside....and there's no locks. A chill lounge feel. Came here for the first time for Mardi Gras. I was a bit bummed that they were out of hard root beer- it was a chalk board menu so I figured they could have crossed it out or made a note so I wouldn't get too excited. I like the seating at this venue. Although limited at the front, it is comfy open square design that seats 6 with a table in the middle. Good for groups, but also good if wanting to meet new people in a cozy and somewhat intimate space. Service was ok. The bands that played were awesome! One of the best clubs in chinatown. I came here many times to celebrate with friends and never had an issue. Usually there is no cover unless there is a live band playing. I remember there use to be a EDM club overlooking ND, I hope they make good use of that space and open up something nice. It was so refreshing to find a place like this after I moved back to the islands a couple years ago. The venue is spacious, and has a kinda "underground" feel too it. For these reasons, I think that it has made it both a trendy and 'have-fun" atmosphere. For the same reasons, it has made the venue very versatile to housing many diverse, and wildly popular, events. These venue has everything from indie bands, electronic music DJs, hip-hop acts, reggae events, and even houses some cinema/performance art events. I would go so far as saying that it's the closest thing we've had since the old After Dark; which used to be out on Nimitz. Besides being a great versatile venue, the club brings in some notable talent from across the nation. Every week has a new act coming down. I love love this spot. While you're in there men will keep trying to talk to you and make passes at you (especially the security). The bouncers operate off of power trips! DO NOT COME TO THIS BAR! I was overcharged when I went and was not compensated in any way. I had a girl bartender serve me that night. The owner, Michael said he would refund but NEVER did! I called twice, left 2 voice messages and emailed once, no one got back to me. I had to send a DM on Instagram for someone to get back to me a week later. I finally got Michael's personal number from an employee of his on Instagram and had to keep texting him to see the status, he told me I did get overcharged and it was an error on their behalf but I still never got refunded. Approached the front of this bar on a Friday night and asked what the cover was. When told it was $10 per person and when we asked what the reason for the price was we were told to "get the fuck out of here and that the bar could do without your cheap ass." When I inquired about why the door person was being so rude I was told that "you are cheap and we don't need you here if you don't carry cash. Obviously if you don't have $10 each You aren't going to spend money on drinks." I asked the person if they were the manager and was told that they "own the fucking bar" and "to move immediately or the cops will be called." So overall... I felt discriminated for being gay coming into this bar the man taking ID's at the front did not want to let me in but i saw him let a bunch of other people in. Honestly i'm used to it so i just figured it was that man being homophobic towards me. I ended up coming here years later for valentines day and it was a different person at the front but when i came inside no joke all the bartenders were WASTED. Headed to Next Door to play a gig and as we walked past the colorful characters of Chinatown (homeless guy, crackhead lady, drunken dude) I thought to myself, why does it have to be like this? Why does the life of a singer/songwriter in Hawaii have to involve the dirty streets of Chinatown? Why can't my gig be at Neiman Marcus or at least somewhere that I'm not afraid I'll catch syphilis if I sit down without spraying Lysol. Oh yeah, because that's where Indie music in Hawaii lives...in Chinatown. (Sigh) The things we do for art and music! My fellow yelper Eric A had invited me to play at Next Door for their weekly Wednesday live music show "Broadcast," which features all local musicians playing original tunes. Very cool, I thought, and I was stoked to play. I entered Next Door after the gigantic, although very sweet Samoan door guy checked my ID to make sure I was 21. Trust me when I say that I am waaaay past 21, but I'm totally fine with the fact that I still look like I need to be carded. Just keep lying to me door guy, I love it. Next Door is one of those venues that could be so amazing if someone had enough money to bring it up to snuff. Its walls are beautiful red brick that you can only find in old Chinatown buildings and they are decorated with wonderful art. There is one long bar and the furniture is a hodge podge of random pieces. The bathrooms are a bit odd as they are unisex, or I hoped to God they were unisex or else I was in the Men's room! But alas that's probably one of those features that is meant to make it cool and hipster, but as I'm not cool or hipster I would really like a bathroom that is girls only. There was a bouncer sitting outside of the bathroom and I couldn't help but wonder if he was there to watch the back door or to watch the bathroom. Either way, him being there made me feel better about the whole thing. Went on stage to do my sound check with the stoned sound guy (is there any other kind?) and listened to several deafening tones of feedback. I couldn't tell what he was doing and just hoped that I wasn't the one causing the mess which just made everyone more irritable and didn't do anything to build me a more loyal fan club. It was very sweet though when the stoned sound guy told me that I was an angel that had just landed on stage. Either I sounded really good, or he had just dropped a few tabs and really thought that I had sprouted a halo and some wings. So if you're in the mood to hang out with men who wear plaid shirts, American Apparel and skin tight jeans then mosey down to Next Door with your posse of hipsters. You're most likely not going to like this place if you don't enjoy hanging with college kids and think Chinatown is awesomely eclectic. Wonderful venue for live music but if you're not used to the live and very loud Indie music scene be sure to bring your earplugs. Loners, nerds, and geeks: I've been here, lads. I've been into the shire of hipsters and on First Friday, nonetheless (Day of Hipsterdom). It really wasn't my intention to. I was looking for an event called 808 Speakerbox. I have this tendency to go to places without knowing A) Where it is, B) What it's called, and C) Why I'm going there in the first place. Makes the trip altogether more fun and normally it works out for me in the end. Tonight, it didn't though. The event didn't take place there, but after walking a couple of rounds on the block, I decided to settle at Nextdoor and have a beer. Didn't have to pay any cover charge when I got in around 7:30 pm. It's dark and artsy like an emo kid's soul, but without the acne. Big room to dance in but only a few comfy seats. There were some stools in the back, so me and my $6 glass of Blue Moon decided to mosey on over into that area and watch the scene. That didn't really happen as planned. It was a meat factory in the back. Oscar Myer would've felt some competition. All I could see were men huddling in small groups, glancing around. Having a vagina was immediately made apparent to me and I started to feel kind of awkward about that. After a couple of minutes of being in the trenches of testosterone, I decided to walk towards the only spot were I could find a bit of estrogen: The dance floor. The dance floor was a bit sparse, but it was still pretty fun to throw in my nerd moves. DJ was playing alright songs. Nothing bold or new. Not sure if it was because I was solo, but it got "meh" after a while. Left shortly afterwards. I think it would definitely be a cool place to see some kind of show or event. If you're a loner, nerd, or geek, I'd advise to save a solo trip somewhere else or wait until they put on something other than a sausage fest. read more

In April we did a fundraiser at Next Door Bar that was a huge success. All we paid for was security and alcohol on consumption. We had the venue for six hours and was allowed to reconfigure the set-up to meet our needs including borrowing furniture from their sister bar across the street. They provided all of our a/v needs including staging with video screen to feature our artists, sound system, and lighting for four top Hawaii performers: Sista Robi, Tavana, John Cruz, and Brother Noland. Event Manager, Daniel Mangum, was amazing to work with from our initial visit to the execution of the event his responses were timely, thorough and very professional. He was such a pleasure to work with and was an integral part of making our fundraiser a success. I highly recommend Next Door Bar to anyone looking for private venue space where entertainment is key. They provide amazing space with a turn-key operation at a very reasonable price. read more

Nextdoor is the ultimate hipster venue. They host a variety of events here from live music to art shows. They open regularly as a bar and if you want something brick, graffiti, and definitely hip as your Instagram background this is your place. They have a full bar with drink specials; my preference being red wine, always. The bartenders are attentive and super nice. There are a few tables to sit with friends, but it's an open space garage feel which allows for a lot of mingling and dancing. They have a DJ that mixes throwback and indie which adds to the mood. To round out the scene you have low lighting and old books that add a certain flare to your night. This isn't your typical let's get drunk off Patrón and boogie down to Top 40 place. read more

I've been twice. Once for the Honolulu Film Festival and my roommate drove and the second because I was out, pretty wasted, and there was no line during first friday. I'm pretty sure it's in chinatown, and if I had to guess, it's around hotel street. Things I do remember: It's WAY LOUD! Like, way way loud. This is kind of a pet peeve of mine so if you don't mind literally shouting at your friends, this place is for you. The bathrooms are probably the dirtiest in the city.
