UPDATE, JAN. 15, 2015. THE RESTAURANT RESPONDED to my complaint about inconsistent quality in food, which I sent via their online web form. They were courteous, apologized, and offered a credit that will cover the price of a couple entrees I had to throw away, and copied a couple other Veggie Grill staff on the e-mail. All we can do is wait and see. When the food is made right, is is great. If you have complaints, I recommend submitting them through the company web form. It may help fix the problems for what has been a good and needed restaurant in a convenient location.
ORIGINAL REVIEW BELOW.
SADLY, FOOD QUALITY IS SINKING AND INGREDIENTS HAVE BECOME INCONSISTENT. One time a dish is good and the next time it is substandard. When they mess up an entrée that goes into a carryout, giving a free entrée the next time is nice, but does not compensate for no dinner tonight. Please read through to the end for a special message.
THESE INGREDIENTS, LISTED ON THE MENU ARE MISSING from tonight's carryout, a Quinoa Power Salad: red onion, bell pepper, almonds, currants, mint, hemp seeds, "marinated" kale and romaine. What does it have? Kale that is not marinated, a few chunks of avocado (one chunk is beyond ripe), a few pieces of thinly shaved fennel--under an inch long, a sprinkling of short pieces of shredded carrot, and no more than a teaspoon of quinoa. It is primarily a bowl of loosely chopped, tough, dry, curly kale. I had elected to omit the white beans and for an extra charge, added tofu, which was included. Aside from the tofu, there's no dinner for me tonight.
Recently, I ordered the Sonora Bowl for a carry out, picked up by someone else. I thought they must have given the driver the wrong salad, but when I called, I learned that was not the case. Still, it looked nothing like the Sonora Bowl. Ingredients were missing and the dish was no good. The restaurant said the corn was missing because it was out of season. That is something they should tell the customer when the order is placed. It was so drab, I nibbled a few bites, put it in the refrigerator, and discarded it days later. The restaurant provided a free entrée the next time we ordered, but there was no dinner for me that night.
Several times the Kale Caesar has been great and several times, part or all went into the trash--the difference is that wide! And if the restaurant messes up the carry-out, there's no dinner for me.
Last week, I ordered the Butternut Squash Soup. Unlike the first time I ordered it, this time it was too spicy to eat and discarded.
I expect my order to include ingredients listed on the menu and it should resemble the picture on the menu that shows the food I ordered. An issue with salads in general is the inconsistency of ingredients and quality of greens. Turns out that anything with kale is high risk to order. They may get it right, but increasingly more often, I've received, tough, dry, curly, barely chopped kale, while other ingredients are such as romaine, are either minimal or omitted. Tough, curly kale has to be chopped down into smaller pieces and well-blended into the salad. Otherwise, it overpowers everything else and is at the same time is bland.
Veggie Grill is a great concept. With a varied menu from comfort food to options for special diets, they also provide nutritional information on their menu items and flexible options in ordering, and the people there have been nice. If Veggie Grill turns things around, I will go back.
A few others have posted experiences that echo those that I've had. I am going to notify the restaurant and send a copy of my review. They may respond well or not at all, but everyone deserves to be informed and given a chance to respond. If you have posted dissatisfied reviews, I suggest you do the same. Social media is brutal, often unfairly and to people that do not deserve it. Don't be part of the problem. Work toward a solution. read more
