We stopped by here on our way through. So glad we did!! Beer is on point and great. My wife likes lighter beers and the witbier was the trick. Full of flavors but smooth and clean. I had the Fiddler's Dream and loved it. Nice flavored IPA. Food was very good as well. The fries are crispy, the pretzel was cooked perfectly (soft not hard) with a great cheese dip. The deviled eggs are as stated just like Grandma made. They are savory (not sweet which I do not like) and on point. Staff is very nice and friendly. I highly recommend this place and will be coming back!! read more

Some of the best sours have ever had. We found them through a neighbor and drive 45 minutes just to get their latest beer releases and beer on tap. read more

Love trying all the breweries in the area, so next stop Newgrass! Loved the outdoor seating as it is nestled in a wide alley type breezeway with a game of corn hole on the side. As we entered, we noticed that there was an upstairs seating area, which was a nice touch, along with a dedicated area for music. The best I could tell, it appears most musical delights are enjoyed in the evening. We usually like to hang out at the bar, unfortunately this place is not really set up for that so we were a little bummed. I quickly reviewed the available beer enchantments and ordered. Lucky for us the weather was quite nice so we enjoyed our drink outside. While sitting, we struck up a conversation with another couple of which the male appeared to work at the brewery but not currently on duty. They suggested the falafel with mac cheese. This was a delight as we were unaware they served food. Taking their suggestion, we ordered the falafel. You order at the counter and receive a number. This way, once your food is ready, the staff will bring it to you. This is a plus, who wants to wait at a counter. Fell in love with this dish. I was quite impressed with the mac and cheese as it had both white and mild cheddar cheeses. Bursting with flavor, definitely a must have when coming here!! Street parking is ample; however not sure how it may be in the evening hours. This place is great for gathering a large group of friends or have a more intimate set up outside or tucked in one of the corners. Ambiance is definitely 5 stars! Food we ordered 5 stars, will need to return to try other delicious bites, and the beer 4 stars, nothing remarkable. I think all breweries should have bar seating as this allows for patrons to discuss beer with the staff and most of all I like discovering what makes a brewery/pub/bar different from others, as we all know, Charlotte has become a saturated craft scene. Side note: The male employee we met earlier took the time to clear a couple of tables and fix some of the outside seating before leaving with his girlfriend. Someone who takes pride in their job and where they work is always refreshing to see. KUDOS SIR! read more

What a great little brewery in Shelby! Went there for the first time this afternoon and was thoroughly impressed. Great style selection, inviting atmosphere, and some of the friendliest people inside. Had a chance to chat with Jordan who is just a gem! Had a wide selection of brews on tap- Porter, IPA, altbier, and a seasonal to name a few. Loved the decor, wood styling with ample seating indoors and an outdoor patio. Darn do I miss NC taprooms! Can't wait to follow this brewery and see what comes out in the future. Wonderful start for the Shelby craft beer scene. read more

Newgrass Brewing - a can and a glass of orange juice - Breweries Near Me - Shelby, North Carolina

Great spot!!! We had a flight and the beer was decent, but not mind blowing. I would definitely return though to try more. The food was excellent! I was very impressed. I was able to try the fish and chips, fried pickles, and burger with bacon jam, Gorgonzola, and a side of grilled sweet potato. It was the kind of food I would expect from a restaurant, not a small brew pub. The atmosphere was also nice. I liked the indoor stage and the upstairs seating. Check it out, especially if you're hungry! read more

Newgrass Brewing - Nice place and an indoor stage. - Breweries Near Me - Shelby, North Carolina

Being from Louisville, we're no stranger to a good brewery or distillery. But I was very impressed with Newgrass, so much so that I wondered why we don't have something similar in the vile. The venue is just great. They have a little side patio marketing the best of a wide alleyway with patio furniture and cornhole. But it has such a cozy, romantic feel with the lights they've strung overhead. I am a sucker for good interior design and everything about this place was clean, sheesh look. Very warm and inviting. They had copper colored stained cement floors accented by wood every where. They had plenty of seating and a nice size stage. They have a second floor seating area with a cozy corner with a couch and comfy chairs. The service wasn't terrible but I wouldn't say it was good. I am not a huge beer drinker so I like to get opinions before ordering. The lady at the register was helpful but seemed almost annoyed with my questions. She also mumbled a lot and was hard to understand. The beer was very good. I had a ginger beer and also tried the Carolina Uncommon. I preferred the Uncommon because it taste was a lot more subtle. But both were good. They were also very reasonably priced. We enjoyed the music and the atmosphere. It was a great place to meet up and chill with friends. My only other comments would be to better make the stair cases. They're hidden and a little difficult to find. Also when your upstairs, it's hard to find the bathroom. I would inform customers that they need to go down the stairs. read more

Newgrass Brewing - Breweries Near Me - Shelby, North Carolina

This is a top notch brewery, definitely exceeded my expectations. I was familiar with their fruity sour beers that are so delicious, but actually visiting the brewery was a great experience. Friendly staff, and I was pleasantly surprised with their food menu that has also vegetarian/vegan options. Definitely will be visiting soon. read more

All Local. My favorites are The Lily Bean golden stouts. These beers are made using coffee beans from the local coffee shop next-door Brownie Friday-Papaws Porter battered and fries with salted caramel and vanilla ice cream. Why you want it--While I normally don't go for deep fried desserts. this is not a normal brownie. It has a rich flavor without the sickening sweetness. read more

Great place in downtown Shelby. Did not eat anything. Beer was great. Good selection. Really nice!

Wow ! It's been awhile since I'd been here for obvious pandemic reasons but the pandemic suited them well! The food was always good and still is really good but the beer has greatly improved amd is quite impressive. Some people thrives in the pandemic. This must be the case for Newgrass too as their new offerings with their new head brew master are outstanding. read more

Such amazing beer, next top brewery for me! Didn't want to stop trying all the great options they had. They also had excellent food! I highly recommend trying this place out. read more

Crazy good food for a brewery. They make some crazy beers. Wish they were doing flights right now but besides that Newgrass is a hidden gem.

Went to newgrass on the way home from a weekend camping trip. Overall newgrass is a really great brewery. Outdoor seating was really nice and the atmosphere was low key and family friendly. Customer service was good and we even talked to the owner I believe for quite sometime. Good people there. Only downfall was the fact that there were only 4 beers on tap. read more

I'm not a beer drinker. I've been here several times for the quality food supporting local NC farms. I've yet to have a bad food experience here. We usually get the grassfed burger on a lovely buttered bun. The sautéed kale side is delicious if you are a kale fan. The flatbread specials rock too. read more

Staff is nice and welcoming! Awesome beer selection, including house made brews. Food is great also!

The employees were super friendly and helped us with the beverages we wanted to select. Really liked that we could sample before ordering. The breakfast burger was cooked correctly (I ordered medium well) and the side portion did not overwhelm the entree but was not underwhelming for the price point. Facility was clean and inviting. Will definitely eat here again. I appreciated the tribute to the original purpose of the build which was Hudson's Department store. Seeing the old photographs of the store and the Hudson family brought back a lot of memories. I rated it a 4 because I would like to have seen clear windows overlooking the town instead of the privacy windows. The loft area is a good place to eat and would have a nice view of the town area. If they were part of the original building I understand keeping them. read more

Great place to stop for a drink. Went on Saturday afternoon before a wedding reception we were attending at Indigo Blue. What a hidden gem. Ordered drinks and pretzel with cheese and pita chips with hummus. Everything was fresh and delicious. Nice wine and beer choices. Owners where on site and where very hospitable. When your in Shelby this is a nice place to go. read more

This is one of my favorite breweries. I've never eaten there but I do like their beer. One thing I have learned is one batch to another are not identical. I just went up there a couple of weeks ago and purchased the coconut cream beer which is my favorite. Bought 3 four packs. Had to throw away two 4 packs as they were so nasty. And I have drank many of these beers. Also had the same problem one time with the banana beer. Took them back and they acknowledged they were not right. Word to the wise open one of the beers in the cans before you purchase more and taste it to make sure it is what you are used to. read more

Pricey Beer! You can find there beer cheaper in about 3 different places in town!! One of the other places is next door!! PLEASANT CITY HAS NEWGRASS BEER CHEAPER!?? How is that possible?? Do yourself a favor and drink Newgrass beer at PLEASANT CITY! read more

Just stopped by here to get a beer and appetizer before heading to a wedding. It's 3 pm. Sign on door says they open at noon. 3 workers standing inside watching us try and get in from 2 different front entrances that were locked. Helloooo. It was a sign bc we walked on down to Pleasant City Grille. FANTASTIC Thank you Newgrass for ignoring us. read more

Don't let the logo or website fool you, Newgrass is getting really creative with their tap lineup and certainly isn't your run-of-the-mill small town brewery that makes an amber, IPA, wheat and stout. Instead, when you waltz into their high-ceiling, two-level space, you will see that they dabble in barrel aging, dry hopping, inventive ingredients (think Dogfish Head or Wicked Weed), guest taps sour beers. Their flagship, the Carolina Uncommon, a rustic rye saison brewed with 100% Riverbend Malt, is a beer for the people, but they also do a variants, including a session and pumpkin version when I stopped in on a mid- November Saturday. If you can't find a beer to enjoy at Newgrass, you simply don't like craft beer. Now, my attention would have been captured easily enough with their portfolio, but the food menu caught me by surprise. I threw caution and my cholesterol to the wind and ordered the Belgian waffle, infused with orange and thyme, plus a fried chicken breast, two strips of pecan wood smoked bacon and real maple syrup. They included some orange-infused whipped butter and I'm pretty sure the batter for the fried chicken also had some orange peel in the mix. Needless to say, my taste buds were doing a little happy dance! The bartender couldn't have been friendlier and it was quite nice that my four-pack sampler paddle and plate were both cleared soon after I finished. Talk about attentive service! I know the place wasn't packed, but they still scored quality points for being so welcoming and accommodating. I expect this place gets a whole new vibe in the evenings with live music, but I quite enjoyed sitting down to enjoy my beer and food after an energizing trail run at Crowders Mountain State Park earlier in the day. I don't want to build up Newgrass as being the best brewery experience I've ever had in my life, as I probably was so impressed as I went in with positive, but not too lofty, expectations, but I had a wonderful experience and it certainly made me want to make the hour drive out to Shelby again with friends to experience the cute small town together. read more

I live in Charlotte. I visited Shelby last Thursday night with some friends who live in the area. I was the only black guy there, but everyone was so welcoming and cheerful! I was very comfortable. The live music was pretty good. It had everyone in a festive mood. I tried the German table beer, the farmer's dream, and the farmer's nightmare. Farmers Nightmare...It was my first time trying a drink with an IBU over 90, but I enjoyed this IPA! I thoroughly enjoyed the drinks, the atmosphere , and my company. I hope to return the next time I visit Shelby. read more

Newgrass Brew Co has an exceptional taproom and atmosphere inside and out. The beer is exceptional and unique with a number or brews with locally sourced ingredients and a diverse selection, which is sure to please any palate. Newgrass is quickly establishing themselves as part of the local community as well as a destination and landmark location in Shelby, NC. Lastly, the food is one of the most unique in the area and would be considered a modern take on bar food. The shrimp hushpuppies are bacon wrapped cheese filled dates are some of the highlights, but the menu has a unique twist on a number of traditional plates. Also worth noting that the service is exceptionally fast. read more

We stopped in on a Saturday around 2:30 so it wasn't busy (yet).I got a chance to ask a bunch of questions and we were given a couple free samples. My Mom is not a beer drinker at all but they only offer bottled sodas( which she doesn't drink )other than beer, so she tried the Gingerfication and absolutely loved it. we ordered two flights ($7 Each for 4 )so we sampled every beer on menu and doubled up on the Gingerfication. Nice variety of IPA, Porter, and Lager. My favorite is the Uncommon Blonde, a very smooth, lighter beer. For food we got the wings, uhm which are not your normal buffalo wing, they are the entire wing. Fantastic moist and meaty. The Buffalo garlic sauce is great. The side of the day was the Kalette, a hybrid kale and Brussel Sprout, its fried. looks like kale with a slight sprout taste but surprisingly tasty. But the hit of the party was the Spoiled Brat. OMG, I have never had such a fantastic Bratwurst and I'm from the Midwest bratwurst capitol. Served on a thick butter grilled bread with caramelized onions, beer infused Dijon mustard and a pickled okra on the side. They have different specials during the week and live music ALL the time. Great, Great place and will be back again and again. read more

Great beer, but even better food. The food is not an afterthought for this brewery, and I was amazed by the quality. Our favorites were the tempeh tacos (big surprise!), the grass-fed burger, and the buffalo chicken flatbread. Every dish was flavorful and delicious. The big finish was the pound cake with vanilla ice cream.....would return 100% just for this dessert, you just need to try it. The NE IPA was great as well as both stouts we tried. Staff was helpful and pleasant. Glad to see such a well-run brewery in Shelby! read more

The beers were good, the patio with cornhole boards was good, food was OK. However, all of the good was trumped by the horrible service yesterday. All encounters were with staff who were clearly not happy to be there. My husband asked what kind of IPA they had and was told to 'look at the board'. There was no one else waiting, so taking some time to explain what was available would have been customary. Won't go back, as there are too many other choices out there! read more

Very interesting brewery in Shelby. I checked it out today while visiting with family in the area. Very impressed by the beers - Carolina Uncommon Rye Saison and Lily Bean Golden Stout. This was our first time here and we won't be back. Unfriendly staff. The guy behind the counter seemed like he'd rather be anywhere else. The food was overpriced and mediocre.
