Such a good spot in Belmont/Mount Holly!!!! I actually discovered this place because of a Groupon for a rum tasting and tour. The hidden treasure here: if you go to a tasting, you are given a shot glass that you can take back any time for a free tasting. You really can't beat that. Not to mention, the tour is AWESOME. The distiller is so entertaining and very generous with samples of their delicious rum selections. This is a historic mill from the 1800s and sits on the river (hence the name, duh!). Beautiful views, a wonderful bar upstairs with solid drinks and easy peasy parking in the lot. What more could you ask for? Oh, they serve food too! Their cocktail menu is extensive and unique featuring their own flavorful rum selection. Nice place. Really clean and friendly staff. This place is deceiving large. From the back patio, to the spacious back room, lower patio and green space. They have a large array of rum to sell with various flavors. I did see one vodka. They had coconut, pineapple, and spiced rums just to make a few. Fun place with tasty drinks and food. The inside is nice with a warm feeling, we especially liked seeing the tanks. They have a nice outside area which is off the river and lots of seating. I love our newest venue in our awesome little town. The transformation of their new space is fabulous. I am not a big rum drinker but I did enjoy their Spiced Banana painkiller drink. We visited on this particular evening due to the live music and were not disappointed. Although a little chilly outside and only one fire pit to share for all, the owner did communicate that they were working on warming up the outside with additional pits and heaters for future outdoor events in colder weather. That is exciting. They have opened the small kitchen and have food trucks now and again. What a cool place to grab a drink! Recently I was meeting some friends at the White Water Center, and my girlfriend and I had some time to kill. She suggested we stop in here for a drink. I was intrigued as I didn't know this place existed and wasn't sure what to expect. We pulled into the gravel parking lot in front of what was once a thriving cotton mill. I love when historic buildings are repurposed instead of being torn down, and this is a great example. They are known for making rum, and a lot of their cocktails reflect that. There is a sizable tap room with plenty of seating at the bar as well as high tops, tables, and even some outdoor seating on the balcony. The outdoor patio overlooks the stream below and is a great place for a refreshing rum cocktail on a nice warm day. They also offer small bites including flat breads and pretzels if you want to grab a bite as well. I went in not sure what to expect but I came away charmed by what I experienced and will for sure stop by another time when I'm in the area. read more

We are on the road full time and always look for neat places to go. Muddy River Distillery is a MUST SEE!!' Everything about it is amazing, their location in a restored cotton mill is so incredible. The tour was the best, the owner Robbie gave the tour and he is so excited about his rum was very informative and fun and got to taste a few rums. The distillery has a great food menu and all the food was tremendous. We had the meat lovers flatbread and the pimento cheese tray. Their rums are all so very good. Drinks at the bar were so good we had the smoked rum old fashioned. And the pirate drink. There must be 20 or more specialty drinks they make. The bartenders (especially Kaitlyn) were so nice and made the best drinks. We brought home T-shirts, rum, stickers and a drink smoker. We will be back in our travels! read more

We live 4 miles from Muddy River Distillery and visit every 3 or 4 months! Every out-of-town visitor we host gets taken to Muddy River. Their Silver is a solid, SOLID 80 proof rum for mixing. The 1-year barrel aged rum is delicious and the 4-year barrel aged rum will knock your socks off!!!! They have a wide variety of flavored rums: Spiced, Coffee-infused, Coconut and Basil as well! We own THEM ALL!!! The staff is friendly & knowledgeable, the product is delicious AND the prices are reasonable. We highly, highly recommend this establishment!!!!!! UPDATE 7/20/2021: We needed to see their NEW LOCATION in Mt. Holly! It's big and beautiful! Jordan mixed our drinks and answered all our questions about the new products. Talk about an amazing time and I am not a RUM fan but I am now. I really enjoyed the tour and lessons. And to have the basil rum in my collection has been great...it has been so good that I am half way through the bottle and I just got it Saturday. The distillery boasts some 160 barrels and you can have a barrel dedicated for special occasions for FREE. So imagine having a barrel dedicated to your anniversary, wedding, birth of a child...heck ya first date . I really like tha concept and if you bring your shot glass back you can get to sample the 8yr and 12yr old in the future when they are ready. They also has spiced rum infused cigars by the Watchman and some yummy looking bitters. I am looking forward to a return visit. read more

This review is for the Queen Charlotte's Reserve Navy Strength Rum but I've had all the rum from this specific distillery and would highly recommend any of them. So happy I discovered the "oldest legal rum distillery in NC". Muddy River was such a fun, fantastic find and a great way to spend a Sat afternoon! They only offer tours on Saturdays with the last tour going at 3pm. The tasting room and tour section are super small as it is a small, fam run operation. But, the history and humble beginnings are worth hearing, especially once you delve into the tasting. I've never been a big fan of white or flavored rums, I prefer the dark, aged stuff. But, I have to say any and all of the rums produced here were so surprisingly drinkable and the quality is evident from the nose to the palate! I was floored, especially with their silver and flavored offerings. So drinkable, it is shocking! And, honestly, for the price point, reasonable considering what a small fam-run operation they are still doing! They just released their 4yr barrel-aged rum and it was magnificent! It drank like a sweet bourbon variant w/a smooth and satisfying finish that lingers long enough to remind you you're actually drinking rum. They have spiced rum cigars and rum-infused coconut chocolates for sale in the gift shop (both of which I purchased) along w/btls and other merch. The $8 tour & tasting price tag gets you a souvenir shot glass and a sample of each of their rums (including the 4yr), but the best part is, if you come back, just bring your shot glass with you and you'll never pay for another tasting! I found this place on Groupon and purchased a tour for four. My sisters and I had a sister's day for their birthday and since drinking is always fun and we wanted to try something new, this was a win/win. The tour was short and sweet, a little over 30 mins from start to finish. Everyone receives a shot glass that allows you free entry for a tour with samples in the future for life (cool concept). The tour guide was really nice and was awesome at telling the Muddy River story and the rum distillery process. We were provided six samples of rum. Surprisingly the basil rum was my FAVORITE and as the tour guide explained correctly, I would have never tried it if I had not sampled. I will be keeping that in stock in my bar.... forever. I can't wait till winter, I can see myself with the spiced rum in a mug with some eggnog for a hot toddy. The spiced rum was my runner up for sure! read more

You can really tell how much passion they have for the company. All of the products were incredible. I would not call myself a rum lover but found everything at Muddy River to be delicious and worth buying. It was hard narrowing down our favorites but the coconut and queen annes (both the 1 and 4 year) ended up coming home with us. Definitely worth the visit and we will be back! read more

Great tour. The staff is incredibly friendly. The tastings go from strong and butter to sweet and warm! I bought the spiced rum and cannot wait to try it with eggnog apple cider and in hot chocolate! The distillery is not a really big place but it has a really warm feeling when you're taking a tour. The tour in front of us thought I said it was a lot of fun and you get a shot glass for only eight dollars which covers the tour as well. Great local rum and great owners! I did my first tour with Muddy River this past weekend. Muddy River has always been great to our pirate group, Scoundrels of the Seas, and they usually haul us in Charlotte's St. Patrick's Day parade. The tour is 30 minutes, but you learn a lot about their history and of course, rum. Besides rum, they also package and carry a variety of moonshines. So on the tour, There's about seven different samples of rum and moonshine. Being a bourbon drinker, I really like Queen Charlotte's Reserve which is an aged rum. Of the moonshines, the ameretto flavor stands out. And the flavored rums are also tasty. I'm not usually a coconut rum person, but theirs is the best I tasted. We took home a bottle of the spiced rum which is smooth and has a great blend of spices. Owners Robbie and Caroline are passionate about their product. Go and see them or you can find their products in some NC and SC stores and bars. read more

Also, the white rum and the age rum are great on their own. If you pay and do the tour, you will get a shot glass and can come back at anytime for free and do the tour again all while getting the free samples each time.
