The owner is extremely knowledgeable. I had a bunch of questions the last time I visited, and he was very patient with me. He answered all my questions. They also have a bunch of card games and board games. In the past, I stopped in and there were a bunch of folks in a side room playing an online video game. Unfortunately, COVID had a bit of an impact on that business. It sounded like they are trying to work out a new contract to get that going again.

J and i have been coming here just about every couple weeks for a few months now, and i hesitated…read moreon how i would rate this place. in truth, if you had asked me my opinion after our first time in, it wouldn't have been good. let me just start out by admitting i really don't know shit about shit when it comes to comics. but, as the daughter of an avid record collector and record show organizer, i've been around a very similar circuit for my whole life. so when i say this place is lacking in the ambiance department and the staff is pretty apathetic, know that i'm not expecting to be waited on hand and foot inside an art gallery or anything. there are a LOT of books in this place. a ton. and yet, it simultaneously manages to look empty. like, it looks like a going out of business yard sale...but less lively. it's always empty and dead silent - all you can hear is the floor creaking and other people breathing. maybe i've watched too many episodes of the big bang theory, but they could really stand to get someone in there and decorate the place. i understand that to them, inventory is more important, but having a store that looks like this just really smacks of "i don't care." which was the same vibe i got from their "service." the first time we were in here, we hadn't yet figured out their organizational system and we were a little unsure of some release dates, so, we asked. and we were met with what amounted to "i don't know." is it out yet? when will it be out? are you sold out of it? where would it be in the store? are all pretty basic questions you should know the answer to or be able to look up if your only job is to sit in an empty comic book store all day every day. and if you have something, is it reeeeeeeeally too much to ask for you to get up and show me where it is instead of gesturing to nowhere in particular, so i give up looking and you lose a sale? i mean, jesus. okay, so. the bright side. easy parking, either on street or in the public lot next door. inside, again, lots of books. good deals, and they often have sales on not only the "regular" comics but also graphic novels. their setup is alphabetical, with separate sections for marvel, DC, books, and kid's. the "kid's" section is directly to your left when you walk in, for my fellow adventure time fans ;) and, for whatever reason, we've recently experienced much improved service. maybe we caught them on a string of perpetually bad days. maybe the big boss gave them a talking to. maybe they follow the high fidelity model and we've only just now earned our place as "regulars" and are thus deserving of being helped. *maybe* it's that J wrote an unflattering review elsewhere (after having a night and day experience visiting hub comics the same day) and a mutual acquaintance between J and NEC's employee said "hey, my friends are cool and you weren't, knock it off." who knows. but the last couple of times we've gotten the good service we should have gotten from day one. asking if we need help without prompting, helping us find comics, personal reviews/recommendations, giving out helpful information regarding ship dates, etc. so, we'll keep coming back. a big selection and low prices. as an urban vinyl/blind box toy collector, i do wish they had some non-comic items beyond some magic the gathering things and a few tshirts & pins, but hey, this IS a comic book store after all. i just wish we had our recent positive experiences from day one. i doubt most customers would be as forgiving as us, especially when you have the option of shopping online. take a hint, NEC. i want to see you reach your full potential and stick around!

My wife enjoyed looking at the variety of things but ultimately it was not anything we needed. If you are unaware Newbury Comics has far more than just comics and is quite the iconic/notable chain in the New England area. Come here for all your anime, music, movies, books, and all the nerdy wants. Not my cup of tea but they had a huge shelve of Funko Pops for example with a huge variety of characters. Didn't check prices but I suspect it's not the cheapest store but does have a factor of connivence with their large selection. They certainly have something for everyone who steps inside. Worth a browse if nothing else.

This store is very popular since it's located north of the MA border where there's NO SALES TAX and the parking lot is a bit tight in front. I'll shop here often to pick up new releases and scavenge through the used CDs and DVDs. I've picked up a few great deals in Salem including $2.99-$3.99 used CDs and $6.99 used DVDs and cool toys such as kazoos, bobble heads, and a George W. Bush Talking Bottle Opener, "Fool me once.... shame on...shame on you..... Fool me, can't get fooled again." Newbury Comics has an Email Club which is free to join and they'll send newsletters with lists of new releases, specials, in-store events, coupons, and even cool freebies each week to your inbox. I've collected the set of Newbury Comics limited edition pint glasses, which is offered free to Email Club members with an email coupon sent throughout the year. However, several times, this store runs out of the glasses and other freebies quicker than other locations. NOTE: This store will be closing in March 2016 and relocating to The Mall At Rockingham Park in the former FYE space. This has been the trend lately of several Newbury Comics stores moving into malls (ie Nashua, Burlington MA, Peabody MA, Natick MA, Braintree MA, South Portland ME).

Over the years, many record stores have come and go through downtown Lowell. There used to be…read moreseveral record stores all within walking distance from Central Street towards Merrimack. From Garnick's, to RecordLane, to Bananas, and MIA Records. Ever since the coming of the digital age of downloading and file-sharing, these stores went the way of the dinosaur. RRR Records is one of the last few surviving indie record store in downtown and in the Greater Lowell area for the longest I can remember. I been going here for quite sometimes and I've never been disappointed. I discovered a lot of music here and unearthed a lot of rare grooves. The storefront is very easy to miss. Tucked between a beauty school and another business. Unlike other record stores, there are no colorful signs or wacky posters that adorn the storefront. It is actually tasteful and minimal which is easily overlooked as your driving by. Inside, it is one of the most neatly organized and cleanest record store I've ever been to. You won't get tripped up by boxes or crates over here. All the records are stacked on the wall shelves accordingly by genre, just like books in a library. They have a good selection of rock, jazz, and funk & soul records. Best thing about this place is you don't have to pay New York City or Boston price. Average record price is anywhere between $5-$15 dollars. Leave the plastic at home folks. In cash we trust. Only drawback about this place is you have to really get down on your knees or get a stand to get those hard to reach records. I'm used to standing and flipping through crates, boxes, and chest level shelves in which I find fast, easy, and efficient. Plan to spend some time here and get comfortable sifting through the records. I usually do when I'm there.

I have to admit I don't go in here as much I used to, but every now and again if I'm downtown and see he's open I'll pop in and check it out. Still has all the eclectic stuff he's known worldwide for (noise music). He even has his own labels for that stuff. I mean, his main focus is not my bag, but I still try to support the business when I can. He's got tons of LP's, and all genres of music in there. Also a fair amount of CD's. If you get him talking, you'll find him to be friendly and knowledgeable, even about music he likely doesn't care for. All the other stores in the area are mostly gone now, but RRRecords is still chugging along, like a little slice of my coming of age...
