And this shop is not only for book lovers, though if you love browsing books (new and some gently used ones, too!) you won't be disappointed! But the community focus! There is a small art studio in the back, some lovely, tasty treats near the register (small batch, local source!) and friendly, helpful staff who are right there where you want them to be but not up in your business. They GET Lowell (all the local flavor is there if you want it) but you won't feel like you've visited just another place in Lowell--this shop makes me want to go back again and again.

Though no picture was included with the ad the book and jacket were both listed as "Very Good" (though I think "Excellent" for both would be more accurate) so I took a chance and purchased it and I must say I am more than pleased. I have been searching for this book as a gift for a friend's birthday and most of the copies for sale either on ebay or at other booksellers were in much worse condition and the prices were exorbitant and much more than I was willing to spend. This copy is BEAUTIFUL and near pristine and the price was extremely fair and reasonable. I would recommend anyone looking for a new or especially an out of print book to first check with MANCHESTER BY THE BOOK because if they have what you are looking for you will not be disappointed. I am only sorry I am not closer to their store so that I can spend time browsing their aisles/shelves, but I will be sure to follow them on Facebook and whenever I need an out of print book in the future they will be the first store/website that I will check out.

Never coming back to this place again…read more My husband and I purchased six books totaling over $100. While checking out, my husband politely asked the owner if he would consider selling one extremely worn, old book for $5 instead of $15. To our surprise, the owner refused to lower the price at all. What made this especially frustrating was that the book looked like it had been sitting in a pile near the bathroom, wasn't a classic, bestseller, or even a well-known title, and appeared to be something that may have originally come from a free library box. Meanwhile, we overheard the owner complaining to another customer that he has too many books and not enough space, even saying he had donated many books to clear room. The whole interaction felt hypocritical and left a very bad impression. We are passionate book buyers and regularly spend a lot on books, but after this experience, this is a store we will never return to.

Over the years, many record stores have come and go through downtown Lowell. There used to be…read moreseveral record stores all within walking distance from Central Street towards Merrimack. From Garnick's, to RecordLane, to Bananas, and MIA Records. Ever since the coming of the digital age of downloading and file-sharing, these stores went the way of the dinosaur. RRR Records is one of the last few surviving indie record store in downtown and in the Greater Lowell area for the longest I can remember. I been going here for quite sometimes and I've never been disappointed. I discovered a lot of music here and unearthed a lot of rare grooves. The storefront is very easy to miss. Tucked between a beauty school and another business. Unlike other record stores, there are no colorful signs or wacky posters that adorn the storefront. It is actually tasteful and minimal which is easily overlooked as your driving by. Inside, it is one of the most neatly organized and cleanest record store I've ever been to. You won't get tripped up by boxes or crates over here. All the records are stacked on the wall shelves accordingly by genre, just like books in a library. They have a good selection of rock, jazz, and funk & soul records. Best thing about this place is you don't have to pay New York City or Boston price. Average record price is anywhere between $5-$15 dollars. Leave the plastic at home folks. In cash we trust. Only drawback about this place is you have to really get down on your knees or get a stand to get those hard to reach records. I'm used to standing and flipping through crates, boxes, and chest level shelves in which I find fast, easy, and efficient. Plan to spend some time here and get comfortable sifting through the records. I usually do when I'm there.

I have to admit I don't go in here as much I used to, but every now and again if I'm downtown and see he's open I'll pop in and check it out. Still has all the eclectic stuff he's known worldwide for (noise music). He even has his own labels for that stuff. I mean, his main focus is not my bag, but I still try to support the business when I can. He's got tons of LP's, and all genres of music in there. Also a fair amount of CD's. If you get him talking, you'll find him to be friendly and knowledgeable, even about music he likely doesn't care for. All the other stores in the area are mostly gone now, but RRRecords is still chugging along, like a little slice of my coming of age...
