Dear Newbury Comics, Thank you for having the best new vinyl collection of any store I know of. Love, Jon G. read more

Newbury Comics is for tourists. I know that. But I was at Garage and this place was there, too, and like any bad habit you find yourself in close proximity with, you have to at least give it a poke to see if it's the same as you remember. This location is PATROLLED by an older fella who dresses like he wants to be a middle school boys' soccer coach. He never smiles, stands as close to the door as possible and reminds you frequently to ask for help and not touch anything. On the plus side, the people you expect to work at a Newbury are farther within. Multiple piercings, pigtails, band shirts, you get the idea. They can't work at Hot Topic because there aren't enough of them in the Boston area and they don't own cars, so they go to Newbury. Anyway, I got a captive 14G for my cartilage piercing for an upcoming performance, and I didn't realize that the old guy (Soccer Coach) had grabbed the wrong package until after I had paid for them, since he wouldn't let me handle the bags at all. Fortunately, I noticed his error before I left the store, since that's a state policy - no body jewelry returns, no way, no how. A nice young lady helped me swap (the original pack was $15, and the one I needed and originally pointed to was $4, nice way to push a mark-up, jerk), so she refunded my card the difference and sent me on my way. Long story short, Newbury is just fine for tourists, but avoid the creepers, even if they have name tags. read more

Maybe it's the fact that I grew up in new england and there is always a newbury comics just minutes from my house. So I could be jaded, but I really find this to be the hot topic of music stores. Sure they have a lot of cds, but its highly overpriced and you could probably find a lot of the older cds at a used music store. They stock the fashionable pop punk paraphernalia that makes all 13 year old kids spend there parents hard earned money on 50$ pocket books that look like boom boxes, and 20$ on an overly screened nirvana t shirt. There employees are clueless to what they have here, and they are so obsessed with looking cool at there cool music store job they forget what elitists they are acting like. God forbid you need help, and they are chatting to a friend about the newest my chemical romance cd, you'd think you just stepped on there new thick black framed ray banns, or poked one of them in the new sparrow chest piece they just got colored in. The vinyl though, I am surprised isn't so bad considering the rest of this pop hell hole. You can find an array of horrible indie bands, local, and an okay selection of punk and metal all abhorrently overpriced. read more

I come here for music, and occasionally for fun little gifts for people. Based on those, Newbury Comics is pretty awesome. They carry much more eclectic and unusual music than, say, Best Buy, and go "deeper" into artists' catalogs (i.e. they don't just have the most recent CD and the greatest hits CD). Sale prices are excellent--their top 50 sellers are reliably well-priced and I've had many a pleasant price surprise browsing the racks, too. Yeah, there are also some badly priced duds, but there's thrill in the hunt for the good stuff. Oh, and imports! Newbury Comics has a fairly good selection of these, mixed right in with the regular CDs. I have also found the staff helpful in recommending other CDs I might like based on what I'm buying and what I'm saying. I used to have a bit of a problem opening my wallet too often in this place, and at that time the staff's recommendations for me were getting pretty darn good based on the influx of data. As for gifts, Newbury Comics is my first choice when I want a pooping action figure, a t-shirt with cusswords, or an inexplicable Japanese toy. You'll baffle and delight your loved ones. Minus one for the ultra-annoying crowd in here. read more

I think this is my favorite Newbury location, which kinda makes me sad since I moved across town. It's not as big as some of their other stores, but I like the feel of it. Every time I go in, it makes me nostalgic for my first years in Boston when I would come in with a list. They still manage to cram lots of fun non-music and -movie related stuff in there that's fun to look at. Plus, the last time I was there, they brought back a vinyl section. I'll come back to you whenever I'm in Harvard Sq!!! read more

Every time I come to MA from Canada, my one must-stop is Newbury Comics. This place has provided me with some gems over my last few visits and the entire chain is great. The thing about stores that sell used music is that no two are alike. I love the used music section but also the videos and the miscellaneous stuff that are scattered throughout the store. I've spent at least $100 every time I've walked through those doors. The downside is that I can't spend as much time as I'd like browsing through everything because not everyone (ie. the people I'm with) want to spend hours in one store. I think even with music sales on the fall, there's enough in here to keep this store around while still providing us record fans a place to remain collectables. read more

The Harvard Square Newbury's Gamecube selection has diminished a little bit. This is partially my fault, as I've bought at least a few games here. For the most part, I'm also finding myself less overwhelmingly impressed with the discount music/music choices, as gems are much harder to find than they once were. The prices are still better than what you'll find from most standard real-world retailers (though when your primary competition on this level is the absolutely atrocious FYE, that's kind of like beating the St. Louis Rams). They still occasionally have good deals, and this location is much better than the insanity that is Fanueil Hall, but it's not an immediate stop for me anymore. read more

Located in the Garage, this music store chain has at least one redeeming quality. In the rear of the store two turntables side by side, if you ask at the desk they will give you the needles and you can listen to a record or two before you buy. Wow, I can't think of anywhere else where this could happen. Bravo, Newbury Comics. read more

Newbury Comics - Books, Mags, Music & Video Near Me - Cambridge, Massachusetts

See all

Definately a cool store. Tons of CDs, records, posters, bumper stickers, pins, and hella cool bags here =) Moderately priced ($30 for a bag kinda deal). Kinda a weird location since it's in a parking garage apparently. We wouldn't have seen it if it wasn't for a wait at the tattoo place on the 2nd floor. The bathrooms close early.. read more

This location has cleaned up a lot since I had last visited, and they now have that warm Newbury feel that they were previously lacking. Though this is one of their smaller mall-type locations, they still offer a great selection of books, music, movies, and kitsch. read more

Newbury Comics always seems cool in theory, yet I rarely buy anything, and when I do, it's usually accessories, or maybe a tshirt, though I have sometimes bought comics and books here. I only buy music and films online so there's also a whole section of the store that I just ignore. They also have an extremely lame selection of figures and toys, but that's why Tokyo Kid is next door I guess (though their selection is pretty limited as well, it's a step up from NC) All in all I'm glad they exist because sometimes I pick up really neat stuff here, but everything has that "novelty item" markup so I'm always picky about my purchases. read more

Newbury Comics does a great job of balancing the independent record store aspect with your average chain store. The employees do a good job of looking hip and edgy without the standard record store employee pretension. Most importantly, they don't scoff at you for buying the lastest major label releases or not knowing about the newest emo bands. A lot of the 'standard' (outside of sale or used) prices are a little high for my taste. Their used DVDs are priced way higher than I'm willing to pay for them. The flip side is that they give you way less for your DVDs when you are selling them than any other store around does. I have picked up some awesome used CDs for really cheap though. Their release week sales are many times better than the big box stores. I've bought some new releases for $7.99 in the past, way less than the Best Buy or Target sales. Getting on their email list gives you some great exclusive deals too! read more

Purchased a hat Saturday night the staff was nice asked if we needed any help and they didn't mind us trying literally every hat on!

This place found their niche. It's in the Garage, which makes it indie and alternative, and therefore cool. Okay, maybe not. But you can't just be a music store these days, so in addition to finding several of the cds/dvds you've been looking for at good prices, you'll be able to get random posters, toys or accessories as gifts for people you don't know that well. Real friends will appreciate something more personal. Anyhow, I've found some interesting vinyl here and I like that they have listening stations. read more

Everyday I continue to shock myself on all of the topics I know nothing about.... and when it comes down to it my knowledge of comics comes from picking up the occasional Sunday paper and reading Garfield. Sure I know Superman and Spiderman come from comics but I hate to admit I've never seen one. Due to my lack of knowledge and general interest in comics I certainly wasn't interested in checking out a store devoted to them, but really, Newbury Comics isn't so much a comic book store, rather a store that sells comics and a ton of other stuff too. Newbury Comics is kind of like Spencer's and a frye's all blended together. There are all of those ridiculous, gag-gift items, music and then a wall of comics in the back, slightly out of sight. All of the "junk" items were, well, pretty much junk. You can get neon beer signs, weird strobe lights and such. As far as the music, there was a little of everything. Someone looking for major, well-known releases would be happy and someone looking for more underground, lesser-known items would probably be happy as well. One of the sections that stood out for me was the poster section. Sweeeeeeeeeet. I was able to easily find a wide, wide variety of posters ranging from classic art to contemporary musicians to softcore porn to old school Hollywood actresses (had to find a Breakfast at Tiffany's poster for a friend). While this was definitely the best-stoked section of the store, you probably won't be disappointed with the others, really, you can probably find anything you could possibly want (and a lot you don't want). read more

This store has remained unchanged for at least a decade and a half and I like it. Come here for CDs, DVDs, posters, old stuff, new stuff, eclectic stuff, funny stuff and Red Sox clothing. I like this place! read more

definitely the most crowded of the stores, but i think they all are about the same size and crowd. it's a very cool store and they blew up big since they opened. whatever though, i go here for cheap cds and dvds, posters, random toys, i collect random stuff like toys and ashtrays... it's good for gifts too. read more

Where else can you buy cd's these days? And I like the way the Management has aged right along with me and have tons of stuff for my six year old. While Mom shops at Whole Foods, Junior and I hit Newbury Comics (Fresh Pond version): he for the comics (Teen Titans etc) and super hero items, me for the latest in $9.99 new releases (the new 30-song Sloan effort, yes), and oldie moldies (I've always wanted some Motorhead on cd... and there must be 17 different "Best Ofs" for them to choose from). I am just grateful they are still up and running, and still with generally great prices and pretty much anything I might want. One of the best things about Boston as far as I'm concerned. read more

Is there nothing this store doesn't sell? They seem to have everything a geek could ever want. Amazing music selection for one of the few places still selling physical CDs. Music prices are cheap, makes up for everything else being a little bit pricier (compared to what you could probably find on the internet). But hey, it's a great place to just wander around and see what takes your fancy. Good place to go gift shopping for the nerd/geek in your life. read more

My new favorite place to spend all my money. For a small-ish store, I found their selection of used CDs to be remarkably good. I'm tired of sorting through tons of crap used CDs to finally find a gem. In Newbury Comics I kept feeling smug like "ha! No one's found this one yet! Score!" I like that feeling. That's why I'll keep going back. Plus, I love ugly dolls... they make great last minute "oh sh*t" gifts. read more

The Harvard Square location of Newbury Comics is definitely the most crowded on weekends. It's also one of the smallest locations. That said, they have a great magazine section, turntables for testing records, and lots of imports. read more

Newbury Comics gets mixed reviews from me. On the plus side: lots of hard-to-find CDs and vinyl in a town that is severely lacking in indie record stores, weird and quirky toys, gadgets, and accessories, and a mammoth collection of used DVDs. On the downside: it often feels like a slightly better version of Hot Topic and Spencer's, two stores I avoid like the plague. Another con: the place is usually piggity-packed with teenagers, especially during any school vacations or weekends. If you're looking for indie music you just can't find at your local chain store, or you want to buy Rocky or Lost action figures for that special someone in your life, go here. I can't promise you'll want to spend lots of time in here, though. I tolerated it for about 30 minutes and decided I had to get the hell out. read more

newbury comics is the only place in cambridge that i can think of (that isnt starbucks) where you can buy new (and pre-loved) music. their selection is really great, and if they dont have something in the store, they are usually happy to order it for you. they also have tons of other stuff like dvds, sunglasses, toys, and (of course) comics. but i'm really just reviewing the music selection here. i complain that newbury doesnt do more to promote or support local musicians, but i'll still give this place five stars cause it beats the hell out of buying music from the internet. read more

Overall a decent store. There wasn't a very good selection of cds. The used cds appeared to be mixed in with the new cds, which I didn't like very much. They have a lot of posters, a lot of calendars and a lot of fun toys and clothing. I also really liked the location and the staff seemed pretty friendly. read more

This is a good place to shop at the height of hipster time periods (when more Americans are actually taking their destiny into their own hands and not being passive), and sadly we are not in one right now. I recommend looking for real DIY stuff made by the artists themselves and not sold by big corporations, but this can be an interesting place to browse. read more

Newbury Comics is my most favorite record store in the whole wide world. It's got serious personality. And in the era of convenience ordering online, it's the personality of a place that makes one actually get off one's behind and show up to browse the stacks and racks in person. Since the days when it was the only spot to buy manic panic hair dye, Doc Maartens, and urban decay face paint, it's always been tops in my book. And dang, even their logo rocks. Just seeing anything remotely like it makes me break out into a toothy grin, and start pining away for Cambridge and Newbury Comics. read more

I still buy CDs. Even being hooked into the intertubes at all times, I routinely put down my hard-earned cash to buy music. And I do almost all of it at Newbury Comics. The prices are reasonable (especially the $10 new releases), and they tend to have a good selection of used CDs, so I get the tunes I want for cheap. Also, they have a pretty decent selection of records for the vinyl nerds and audiophiles. Add to that the DVDs, video games, and pretty big comic and magazine selection, and really you've got 90% of my hobbies taken care of right here. read more

They treat teenagers like theives! they sell overpriced generic crap to teenagers and then accuse them of stealing it. I mean their cd's are cheap...sometimes... and it's not half bad really, but the cramped atmosphere is lacking to say the least. read more

Newbury Comics' Harvard Square location is conveniently located inside the Garage on Harvard's campus; however, this location is a tad smaller than the one at Faneuil Hall. The good thing, though, for all you music and TV/movie junkies, is that they have an even bigger collection of CDs and DVDs (mostly used, but in good condition) in addition to all the cool and random gadgets (t-shirts, stuffed toys, books, stickers, etc.) they sell. read more

Dorky little brother needed dorky stuff for his dorm room. The lady with the purple hair was duper awesome and the little dork is happy ;)

Big up to Newbury Comics for fast shipping and selling me a 2004 Dalek Qee bear on the cheap!

I love Newbury Comics. It's full of strange and funny items that I want to buy, but I usually don't because I am afraid the novelty may wear off soon after a purchase. That said, I did buy two magnets in here. I can get lost in this store. read more

I've been checking into this place since the early 90s. I came out of the local DC punk scene of the 80s and for the longest time they didn't carry anything around that, but it doesn't matter - they have a fantastic selection of things anyway- kitsch, records, books, clothing - and frankly by today that scene is "famous" and so I'm sure they do. I'm always so so so happy to visit whether I'm back home here or between cities. In fact, today I was wondering who the buyers were because they've managed to keep things relevant and interesting and there is something for everybody. I did not buy anything today b/c well, my home looks like Newbury Comics, but they can have my money anytime. (Don't worry, I'll have my moment of weakness and be back to drop a wad soon). Great store, Great staff. read more

Over all this one is very good! Its a good size store with a good Selection of used and new CDs and DVDs! Also love the random toys and trinkets you can buy from here! Now we dont have one of these where I live. So anytime Im in Boston I will try and make a trip in to get what I need! read more

I enjoy stopping by here when I come to Harvard Square, though it's more for the books (they have a lot of books about music and bands and random "alternative" topics) and gifts and music than for comics. There isn't much here you can't find online but it's fun to browse. Prices are good for Harvard square, and the service is pretty friendly. read more

A Record and movie shop that sells new comics. OK if you want that but dont go by the name, Prices seemed good.

This is the best place to shop for gifts. They have DVDs and CDs that the big chains just don't carry. They have lots of T-shirts and TV show merchandise and collectibles. This is where Newbury Comics makes its money, not on music or movies. It's all overpriced, useless junk, yes, but when you're looking for a gift for the person who has everything, chances are good you'll find something at Newbury Comics. I'm impressed with the used DVDs. Maybe I just have good karma, but every time I've gone in and checked the used section, they've had the movie I was looking for. read more

This place has shifted from being just a record and music store to a much more diverse and more fun shopping experience. Along with the CD's the store now has a wide selection of DVD's, shirts, accessories, posters, action figures, and more. This has always been one of my favorite stores in Boston and it's even better than it used to be. read more

Been a fan of Newbury comics for a while. This one seems to be better than others for the selection of music that I look for (Electronic). The layout of the store is a bit cramped in certain places and being that you are in cambridge and people feel entitled to stand wherever they want and block the isles you will probably have to stick to walking back and forth up and down the main isles instead of being able to freely move around the back wall. But alas. It's still got a better selection of what I look for then the other Newbury Comics do. read more

When I am looking for all those albums by bands in genres that do not have a concrete name, I go to Newbury Comics. My only problem with this particular branch is they look at you as though you asked them to save the world when you sell some CDs and DVDs back. I find that funny because that was a big part of their initial business model. Nevertheless, it is a wonderful store with tons of stuff you may not need, but you REALLY want. read more
