Back in my day 5 stars Today 2.5 I've been frequenting Newbury Comics in the Garage since 1982... first purchase I bought a Youth of Today Lp, Sound and Fury. Classic. Back in the day, it was just comics and hardcore (the original do it yourself) albums... which is now mainstream thanks to Nirvana, Pearl Jam and RHCP commercial success and the likes of WFNX 101.7 before they went trash. Hipster heaven, it is today for kids as Spencer's was to me in the early 1980s... full of novelty crap. Shockingly I'm surprised in this day and age they are surviving as well as they are... maybe? This particular location of this quirky local chain has been around as long as I've lived in the Metro Boston area. It is like a hidden jem that is tucked away in this oddly shaped shopping arcade. There is even a small hill of a ramp you need to climb. The store is a lot bigger than one usually expects & they have a wide assortment of novelities, music, movies, comics & clothing. So much variety could be quite overwhelming but luckily their is always a good amount of staff to answer any questions you may ever have. Every time I am in Harvard Square I make sure that Newbury Comics is a stop. They always have a great mix of fun stuff. There are times that I don't have any items in mind but just really enjoy walking the aisles just to fill my mind with future gift ideas. This is a really fun shop if you're a nerd. They have all sorts of fandoms here, from anime to Doctor Who to Stranger Things. You'll find something you like here, I'm sure. They have a lot of Funko Pops for sale here. They're not that cheap though, about $12.99 for the commons and some of the more rare ones are $20+ though. I do like that their variety is so big here. I even saw One Punch Man (Saitama and Genos), One Piece (Luffy, Nami, Boa, Ace)... They have a ton of Bob's Burgers merchandise here too. read more

Newbury Comics is wicked awesome! I've been buying vinyl since my first purchase back in 1970-what, John Williams "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" 7" single. Even when CD's hit, I kept buying local band 7"s, and now VINYL is back! For all of the reviewers that hob nob with the vinyl snobs and say Newbury Comics can't offer a good music-buying experience like they used to, I say "You're dead wrong". At Newbury Comics I picked up a Rhino 7" reissue of New Order's "Temptation", my favorite original version of my fave song by one of my fave bands. I don't need anyone behind the counter to help me look for records or CDs, so I was happy to flip through Newbury's extensive 7" collection, their "Wicked Deals" CD bin, and drooled over their great prices on new CDs. I did find several things of note in the Wicked Deals for $2.99, which is like, the price of a coffee these days! Newbury has a great used-DVD selection! I mean, TWO copies of the Blaxploitation classic "Dolemite"? TV series box sets, horror classics, anything you want, they have it! Newbury also caters to teens and Comic Book Guy-type bauble collectors, with their walls of action figures, tee shirts, stickers, and flashy detritus that is FUN, but easy to ignore if you're just shopping for music. They also offer signed pre-sale specials, as I once got a signed CD by a now-HUGE band that shall go nameless. Newbury Comics is the shit. read more

I have 17 real tattoos but I love accessorizing with the temporary ones for fun. Now I can't do that anymore *sigh*. All other merchandise is still out of this world! There was an event going to take place 9/2/22 where emails were sent out 8/23/22 to purchase tickets to attend the event for YUNGBLUD. His new self-titled album was set to be released the day of this event as well, however at midnight. The email said there was a signing & a performance. Either way I'd still buy them, but I'd feel more secure knowing what to expect, how to plan etc. My immediate family, whom I lovingly call, "The 6 Pack of Awesome-ness", includes myself (ofc), my 28 yr old daughter & her son (my 4 yr old grandson), my 12 & 11 yr old daughters & my 7 yr old son all love & adore him beyond words. While in the process of buying our tickets, we called Newbury Comics to ask if in fact we'd meet him and he'd sign the album. We were told emphatically yes & that after everyone received theirs a performance would take place. Not much else was able to be answered for us. We had to act quick too, being that we were unsure of how quick tickets would sell. We couldn't find out if we needed to purchase the cd or the pink vinyl. The vinyl was $20 or so more than cd. Many other necessary details were unable to be given to us. Ultimately we purchased 6 tickets, 4 for cds & 2 albums. We then kept checking different places online & calling off and on for any updates. Each time being told that yes everyone will meet & have signed their album then wait for the show. But we found out other details right up until the day of the event & we were all sitting there, 2nd in line waiting for what we were still unsure exactly was going to take place. We spoke to 3 people in total that worked there, starting from when we bought the tickets. We found out that there would be 2 separate shows, the 1st at 8 for whomever bought cds & the 2nd at 915 for vinyls. The most frustrating thing now was we were told when we called while trying to find parking, that the albums were already signed and that there would be a question and answer time somewhere during the show and anyone could raise their hands to ask something. But that was then also changed to everyone would stand in line that wanted to ask a question and u would go up to the mic when it was your turn to ask something. After staying overnight in our hotel patiently waiting to go to the show, then waiting from 1230pm til things started about 810pm, our hopes and excitement were constantly being tested and it was a roller coaster of emotions. Throughout 10 days leading up to the event the amount of misinformation we received, and the lies we were told are unthinkable, unfair, unethical, irresponsible, unprofessional, and just wrong. No question and answer type thing ended up even happening either. We all remained positive, no matter what, cos that's the way I am & have raised my babies to be. We make the best of situations, as best we can sometimes, so for us all that day it still resulted in a memorable few days, as we all were able to attend both shows, we were all together front row only a couple feet away having the time of our lives singing, dancing, & listening to YUNGBLUD's amazing voice belt out his new songs. Many times thru the shows he came over to us, and focusing on my 7 yr old son & 4 yr old grandson, playing the guitar, singing, & dancing w/them. Both shows were nothing short of what we always know YUNGBLUD to be, & that includes fookin mental, amazing, fun, exciting, happy + !!!! So while it's very wrong, in every way & for whatever reason, what Newbury Comics did & how they handled things, nothing got in the way of our beautiful mindset. What we set out to do was a success. I hope they will change their ways of doing business. To add a side not: even if lies were told, due to the fact that these workers didn't know the answers to the questions being asked, it doesn't change the fact that it was still a lie. For me I would've rather been told they were unsure because they weren't given all the details or something to that effect. I was in Cambridge over the weekend and thought I should make a trek over to Newbury Comics. I have been coming to this location for over 20 years. it is still a treasure trove of weird junk (ex. moustache straws), t-shirts, comics, etc. Oh, and they still sell CDs at very low prices. I picked up some Adventure Time Mad Libs. My wife loves that wacky animated show and who doesn't love Mad Libs? I picked a few of those up and it will make a perfect Valentine's Day gift. My issue with this store is that it doesn't feel like a real used CD store. It's bright and shiny, and everything looks new. They're branded, corporate, and their focus isn't comics so their name is stupid. That said, their used selection ain't that bad. Prices are okay - about $8 - 10 - and the selection covers the usual ground fairly well. My major issue with Cambridge's Newbury is that they mix their used rap CDs in with the new ones, which is a tacit statement that they don't care about rap. (I don't think the Newbury location does this, although the selection is no better.) Fair enough, since they're in Cambridge; the market for Smiths CDs is bigger than the market for menthols at the Roxy. I still feel like I've been ghettoed, though. And the result is that every time I find a CD I'm interested in, it turns out to be a new one that costs $15, so going to Newbury is like going out with a girl who keeps saying stuff like "Hey, do you like threesomes? I know this hot, crazy chick...of course, I'm saving myself for marriage." The staff are always lovely people, though. I can't hate on Newbury. I just can't love on 'em either. The name of this store is a lie. -1 star. Ok, to be fair, my friend did tell me "it's not really a comic book store, it's a geek culture store that sells comic books". I was fore warned, but still, I was left with a bad taste, as the comics were on the back wall, not the front wall as they should be with a name like that. Not that I think they shouldn't sell CDs, DVDs, and anime based toys. No, I agree with that wholeheartedly, it's just the organization that has me down. I was able to get what I was after (Buffy Season Eight #14) with no hassle, for those who care. Basically, what I'm saying is, if I lived in Boston I would come back. In fact, it's entirely possible and likely I'd be back on a future trip to the fine city. This was a major place for my sisters and I when we were kids. Our dad would dump us out on the curb and look for a place to park while we rifled through cds. I usually went for the underground rock and Bjork, Rachel was into Elvis and Japanese pop, Hannah loved Bowie and musicals. Dad is a connoisseur of the blues and rock recorded prior to 1975. Luckily, Newbury managed to fill our needs. I still love these stores, the selection, the trinkets, the smell, the judgey clerks. The prices are very good, too. It's a bit of a misnomer since they hardly sell comics. But records? By golly, do they have records! Tremendously great selection of ska and punk. Great vinyl and used cd selection. They usually also have specials for new releases from bands, with a pre-order you may get something special like a signed copy or extra 7". They stock specialty glassware from bands, like The Mighty Mighty Bosstones pint glasses. Also your typical selection of bags, shirts, hats, and DVDs. read more

It would probably be 2 stars if it wasn't for the fabulously convenient location. I try hard to shop local and resisted the urge to turn to iTunes for my most recent music binge, instead making a lunch hour trip to Newbury Comics. Of the three CDs I went in hoping to buy, they had 2 at excellent prices. I inquired about the third, not seeing a name card for the band. I was pretty rudely informed that their branch had never carried said CD. ... OK? Can you order it? Alas, they didn't offer, and I was too shy to ask. I should note that I have pretty run of the mill taste in music, at least for Harvard Square. I hadn't even imagined that my request would be too obscure for this place. Alright, I'm not a veteran of CD retail, maybe they can't actually order CDs. But I am a customer service veteran, and there's no excuse for being a sour puss. read more

Suddenly, there, standing amid the racks of label-made, all-caps artist names, betwixt the thwack thwack thwack of CD flipping, amongst the gay sailor Billy dolls and Bacon vs. Tofu action figures, I shed all the layers of my autonomous, iTunes-dependent, financially-solvent, tame-haired, and devirginized twenty-seven-year-old self and was instantly back in high school, back in a time before mp3s and the belief that music should be weightless, packageless, liner-note-less, grasping my dad's crisp twenty-dollar bill and heading purposefully towards the latest Ani Difranco release. I go here every Tuesday, almost always find what I want, and it's almost always on sale. These facts alone demand 5 stars. The real perk to NC, as far as I'm concerned, is their mailing list. I never sign up for emails because I hate my inbox full of shite. But NC sends one newsletter per week which features not only all of Tuesday's new releases, but coupons for all kinds of stuff. Usually there will be a few for $2 off an already on sale new release, one for a free sampler CD which could be crap but just might not and, hey, it's FREE, sometimes a free holiday-themed NC pint glass (with purchase of $10 or more) which has become an unlikely collection in my kitchen, and random stuff you wouldn't (shouldn't?) know about unless you get their newsletter. For example, yesterday I turned in a coupon for a free Gwen Stefani "The Sweet Escape" chocolate bar. I don't know whether to eat it or rub it all over myself. I'm taking votes. read more

As far as Newbury Comics go I find this to be one of the stranger locations. They have rather strange spot on the second floor of the Garage Mall. They do a rather good job of making use of the space and like most other location I have found that they sport a rather good selection of used dvds. I do like this location for their kitsch section (or you could call it flair). One thing that annoys me a bit is for some reason I am normally let down by the comic selection at this location. You can find a few things but it seems like you are better off going to G center or Newbury st. I've been a fan of Newbury Comics basically forever. At least as long as I can remember anyway. I've been shopping at Newbury St. location since the late 80s. One reason I like them so much is because they are a local business, and it always seemed like a much more personal experience going in here - than say Tower Records (when it was on Mass Ave/Newbury). The garage is a perfect location for them because it's kind of a funky mall that isn't too mainstream - kind of the way I feel about Newbury comics. In recent years I find they are selling more and more random stuff/crap - like Pocky, and all kinds of toys, action figures, gag joke stuff etc. Not really my kind of thing. I could really do without all the random /strange distractions.... But when I buy cds and yes I'm still a loser that likes to buy my cds then rip them myself to mp3.... I always come here. I don't shop anywhere else for my music (except occasionally amazon). Very rarely do they not have what I'm looking for. And I love that they still have vinyl (which apparently their sales of are up 60% since last year according to their email newsletter). Vinyl has a soft spot in my heart and I refuse to part with my collection from the 70s and 80s. They even had a record promotion that came with the new Death Cab for Cutie album. You don't feel like your selling out to the man shopping here. And often they have free sampler cds or other cool promotions that make shopping here that much more enjoyable. read more

Newbury Comics is the stop in Boston to make for those in the mood for a very wide array of entertainment. The sheer volume of merchandise could be a good or bad thing depending on who you are. If you want anything from music and dvds to fart toys and fads, Newbury Comics will successfully intrigue you upon your entrance. It used to be a comic store/music store with some posters and other music-related items, but now it is a full-fledged moneymaker in regards to all things entertainment. This store houses tons of dvds and games, as well as action figures, card games, and books. There really isn't anything missing from this location aside from large electronics and, oh, space. What truly detracts from this all-in-one mentality is that one can be bludgeoned by strong dose of overwhelming sensory overload. A multitude of colors, sounds and sometimes smells surround you as you try to make your way to book section in the back. There's usually quite a bit of people in there, (understandably) so your eyes will constantly be darting around just to avoid the emo kids and the confused parents. There isn't anywhere one could stand and not see layers of something trendy or veritably useless, but like I said, Newbury Comics now specializes in such things. The music selection is vast, so one is very likely to find anything they are looking for to a degree. However, one will have to pay relatively handsomely in this day and age to get a back issue record ($13-17). I personally tend to go to Newbury Comics when a new disc is out, for they sell those discs more competitively ($9-12). I also used to go here to browse around, but now I find it a bit too 'in my face' than it used to be, so I'd rather go somewhere a little more quiet and focused. Perhaps other musicphiles might feel the same way. If one has never been to Newbury Comics before, no doubt they can spend hours here just tinkering with all the toys and gadgets as well as picking through various music releases. However, if one is looking for a more traditional music browsing experience while surrounded by like-minded individuals and higher odds of an informed staff, one might prefer to shop elsewhere. Edit: I bumped this down to a '2' because I found that the Newbury Comics on Newbury Street is a lot more spacious and thus, more inviting to browse. read more

I've visited Newbury Comics, at its various locations, for pretty much as long as I can remember. Something just happened at this location that, honestly, has me swearing them off forever. I just came back from I visit - I'd stopped in looking for a particular disc as a gift. As it turns out, there were two copies, both used. One had a significantly lower price than the other yet both seemed to be in excellent condition. I brought them up to the counter to ask what the difference was and the guy (pretty sure he's the manager, as I've seen him there for a long time) looked at them for a moment, clearly didn't know, then decided that the cheaper one was mislabelled. Before I could say "Well, I'll take the less expensive one then" he swept it away and only allowed me to purchase the more expensive one.| Indescribably bad form, so much so that I will never, EVER shop at a Newbury Comics ever again. Screw you - your shortsightedness means that Amazon gets my business from now on. read more

Not gonna lie: I first heard about Newbury Comics from that one Piebald song. (You know what I'm talkin about!) NC is an all around crowd pleaser. Trinkets/ magnets/ toys/ gag gifts galore. Huge selection of DVDs. As always, you can pick up your obligatory Red Sox gear here. And as for the music selection? So. Good. Their vinyl section was on point in my book-- mostly new releases, usually with a few of those picks on sale. Boo yah. Musical genres leaned more towards rock/ alt/ indie/ twee pop, but I was stoked to discover some albums from Stones Throw Records! Snagged a copy of Madlib's Beat Konducta Vol. 3-4 on one visit, came back another time and found Otis Jackson Jr. Trio and at that point, Newbury Comics had completely won me over. NC also had some 45s which was a nice surprise, however, the selection was minute. I mean, ti-ny. It will take you all but 5-10 minutes to sift through all of the 45s they have to offer. But what's lacking in quantity is made up with quality-- I was able to find a Sharon Jones 45 single for about $5! Also a plus: if you need some LP plastic sleeves or snap-in 45 adaptors, rest assured-- they have those on deck too. read more

Newbury Comics is pretty much the only place I will buy CDs in Boston. The prices aren't as low as they used to be back in the day, but they still blow other chain music stores out of the water in that respect, and always have new releases on sale. Plus you can find a lot of things used...and sell things back for a store credit. All the toys and tacky clothing and other crap in the store is annoying, but it is easily ignored. All in all this is a solid choice for music purchasing. read more

Honestly I don't know where else to go for this kind of selection besides Amazon. The prices are really good too. All the extra "trend"/knick-nacks/toys annoy the hell out of me, but then I always seem to find something I have to buy so I guess they work. Their used CD's are fairly priced and are increasingly taking up more and more of the stores. I like the Harvard Square one the least, no maybe the Newbury Street one, yeah, whatever. There is always too much stuff and too many people, but if you wanna get something specific you can eventually find it. It's not the place to go to browse though. read more

I think a simple way to sum up my feelings about Newbury comics is to say that it's a convenient place to pick up a lot of different types of entertainment/escapism. They carry a lot of different types of media, but I wouldn't say that it's a primary source for any. From cds to comics to dvd, to video games, to action figures/kitschy little toys to vinyls, they cover quite a lot of bases. Their cd collection is probably their strongest suit, especially for anyone below 35. The video game selection is laughable, but as is usually the case with places that carry games but don't focus on them, sometimes you can find some good deals (lesser known titles marked down well before their time). But these finds are very few and far between. Their comics selection is also nothing compared to the nearby Million Year Picnic or New England Comics. But if you're into very mainstream books, you'll probably find what you're looking for. The best part of this place - and the main reason I frequent this chain, is it's vinyl collection. Not extensive by any means, it's still a place where you're likely to find a lot of your favorite current bands' vinyl releases. Very cool. read more

It sucks that Newbury Comics is right beneath my job's main office. It also sucks that all the movies I like just so happen to be in stock. It will suck more when I have to ship all of them back to Chicago when I go home. My movie taste ranges from old-school Gene Kelly, Audrey Hepburn and Leslie Caron to hilarious Black comedies like Harlem Nights and Coming to America. They even had the Sigur Rós 'Heima' dvd I'd been looking for for months. Amazon priced it at $60, I got it at NC for $11. Yes I did. It's a shame that they take my whole paycheck. read more

Newbury Comics used to be better. Like, they used to actually carry comics. Now they carry about 5 titles, all mainstream, boring crap. They have a lot of doodads and chachkis, if you're into that. It's a good place to go to find a gift. They're still one of the best places to go for music, including local and independent music, although the original store on Newbury Street and the one in Harvard Square are much, much better than the eight gazillon satellite stores in every suburb in the greater Boston area. read more

Newbury comics is probably the most successful cd store that still around. They sell all kinds of random stuff. And most of it is really not that great. I went in here with my friend and he had a twenty dollar gift certificate and could not find anything worth spending it on. The only really interesting thing that i did find was that they had a station where you could create your own mix cd off of any track from the cds in the store. The problem i had was that you could do it for free at home. A fun store to hang out in, but nothing truly great. read more

I just recently returned from a shopping trip here for the first time, and it honestly wasn't quite what I was expecting, even after reading the reviews here. Despite its name, the actual selection of comic books and graphic novels is pretty sub-par, and what other reviewers have said about the name being a farce is pretty spot-on. You are also paying cover price for anything found in the store, though as I write this they have a buy 2, get 1 free graphic novel sale going. Despite my disappointment in the lack of comic books, there is actually a pretty cool selection of pop culture stuff, and it's refreshing to see a music store still in business in today's market. They have a good mix of T-shirts and other clothing as well as some other pretty cool trinkets if you've got some money burning a hole in your pocket. My major complaint is related closely to the lack of comic books, but I found it astounding that there wasn't a single piece of manga or anime to be found. As an avid collector of manga, I would have at least expected to see a few staple series made available for sale. When I asked the staff about this, they were not shy about recommending a competitor to help me get my fix, which I found to be pretty cool. As has been said, this place is more of a pop culture melting pot than a pure comic book store, but if you're into that, you should feel right at home. read more

Overall its pretty awesome. They have a good selection of CD's as well as shirts, toys and other cool little things. They have a all genres and a lot of albums from the bands i like. The people their are fairly friendly and i think the CD's are very well priced. I think the cheapest CD i got from their was about 7 bucks. It is also a good place to buy gifts. I can tell it's a good used music store when it forces my wife to roll her eyes and say as she leaves, "I'll come find you in an hour or so." It's the type of store that I find ten CD's that I've been meaning to buy for years but never remember to look for when shopping on-line. Something about having all those CD's physically laid out in front of me must jog my memory, and empty my wallet. I've actually been to this location with its well stocked CD/DVDs! But when I recently visited the Rene and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall in OC to watch a performance of Mozart Piano Concerto No. 24 by pianist Yuja Wang, Sir Neville Marriner, and the Academy of the St. Martin in the Fields, I knew I had to complete my Mozart piano concerto CD collection. So off to Amazon I went and although it was only a dollar more than the lowest price, I found Newbury Comics as a vendor and ordered it from them based on their reliable reputation. I ordered Mozart: The Piano Concertos by Jeffrey Tate, English Chamber Orchestra, and Mitsuko Uchida but realized that it WASN'T a complete set (my own mistake). So I contacted them on Monday, sent it back to them the same day, and received a $41.97 credit back to my card on Thursday! So if you're lazy or just feel like ordering from them online, you will be completely satisified. Woo! read more

Yelp has a strange way of grouping things... "If you like Newbury Comics you might also like Condom World and or Harvest Co-op Markets" how very odd! I like this store, it's where I go to get my little sisters birthday and xmas gifts. It is the only store I have found that sells hats that don't make me look like a total ass, or like a McDonalds employee. I adore my hat, and that gave me even more love (which had almost died out) for this store. I like that the Used Cds that they sell aren't in really bad condition. The people who work at this store have a sense of humor too, which is always helpful - my cousin and I test for this almost everywhere we go. read more

Nothing is more Boston in my estimation than Newbury Comics. Despite the name, comics have little if anything to do with it. Back when I used to buy CDs, they had a great selection and I am sure they still do, if I bothered to persue. This location also has an extravagant amount of DVDs and books/magazines. They also have posters, action figures, hats, belts, t-shirts, legwear, keychains, earring, buttons...ahhhh!!! Newbury Comics harkens back to a time when a store like this was exciting, before you could buy it cheaper on Ebay. But the fact is, the excitement of an old-fashioned, all-purpose counter-culture supermarket is unmatched by a clinical thumbnail-filled cyberstore that doesnt even have the capability to condescend to you. In any case, I prefer to examine and cradle the unnecessary and overpriced item I may be coveting at the moment before replacing it back from whence it came because I lack the funds to purchase it. read more
