I went in here to look for and buy a few comic books. The person working there was very nice, patient and helpful. The store itself is small but still has a big collection. The inside of the comic store is also very bright and clean, unlike most comic book places I've seen that have a darker atmosphere to them. The staff is helpful and polite, they will order books for you if they don't have them, and they have a deal where every 11th graphic novel you buy is free (or discounted, I forget). Don't come here expecting a typically dark and cluttered comic store. It's bright and clean and, despite its small size, feels roomy. And, of course, a top-notch and very wide selection of graphic novels. And a friendly, knowledgeable, non-judgmental staff. What surprised me, though, is the comparative lack of monthly comics. The selection is so thin it made me wonder why they carry them at all. So I think it's better to think of this as a bookstore where nearly everything is graphic rather than as a traditional comic store. You can find Hub Comics at 19 Bow St, Somerville, MA 02143 in Union Square. I found this place quite by accident while visiting Boston recently on business. We decided to walk to Union Square based on a brief conversation with the server at Tavern at the End of the World - we were staying at the Holiday Inn in Somerville and since we had such great luck at the Tavern (excellent food and local craft on tap, by the way), we thought we'd continue our streak in Union Square, less than a mile away by foot. As we traveled into the Square the streets split - taking the right split I saw this cool independent comic shop and of course had to check it out. Although in recent years I've become less of a fan (mostly due to the loss of the independent shops that used to be everywhere and are now rare as hen's teeth, as the saying goes) I was quite thrilled at the selection at Hub. They seem to cater mostly to the new comics reader with an extensive list of trades. There were only small hints of back-issues (some were displayed in a small glass case above the entry into a second room) but really, that's what eBay is for. I was quite astonished to find a shelf of locally published small press - reminded me a bit of my favorite store in Atlanta, Criminal Records. Now if the place was only about 2x the size, I would be more than happy coming here weekly and spending on the better trades available. Comics otherwise just aren't what they used to be, with the emphasis on weird plot twists instead of good writing (with the exception of some indy stuff I mean). In any case, I think most would be quite happy at Hub and I will make sure to visit again in the future. read more

Oh if every neighborhood could have a cool, independent comic shop. Wouldn't the world be a better place? I've had the pleasure of living in two neighborhoods with great comic stores. While I always hold the crew at Comix Experience on Divisadero near and dear to my heart, Hub Comics is certainly a nice staple of Union Square. Hub Comics holds a fairly generous selection of comics. You can find everything from the major guys to independent/local to manga, kids, etc. They also have a lot of great deals at any given time. If you check out their graphic novel section towards the left side of the store, you'll often see discount or buy-x-get-y offers on slightly older collections. Though I haven't been to any yet, they also seem to have pretty regular events where they play hosts to writers or artists. Again, another great example of them being a comic store of worth. If you're in the area, stop by - even if it's just to look around and check out the comic-related t-shirts or collectibles, you won't be disappointed. read more

Excellent indie, local and slice-of-life sections that manage to be both in-depth *and* well-curated. Quite knowledgeable and approachable / incredibly-nice staff. I have fond memories of frequenting the Hub when I lived in Union Square atop Prospect Hill. I participated in the 24-hour comic event at Hub a few years ago and very much enjoyed the experience, due largely to the store staff, the kind fellow comics-creators I met there and the comfortable environs. Last I saw, a comic-page of mine from that event can be seen hanging on a cork-board behind the counter. It depicts my then-fiancé-now-wife browsing the store, with James (may he rest in peace), Jesse and Bub working the counter. Hub Comics is the kind of place where you always drive by and think -- damn, I really need to check that place out....but it's in a location that's not easily accessible by T riders. Everyone knows that Union Square, while awesome is slightly off the beaten path. A little backstory: I'm what you call a Comic supporter but don't invest much in comic books myself. However, I want to change, but it's hard to find a good comic book shop where you feel like it's just bursting with content and you could stay awhile and look around. When I was in Seattle, the comic book shops were the best I've ever seen. I think we spent an hour or more just browsing and I ended up purchasing my weight in comics. Well, Russ and I were walking by Hub Comics on the way to the Independent from the City Hall in Somerville and decided to take the plunge. I'm glad we did, because I'll certainly go back. They had TONS of comics and you can tell that the owner takes pride in them -- lots of content -- I could see the hours upon hours I could spend in there by just taking a glance at the shelves. I thought -- hey! I think I finally found a comic book shop that will make me a true comic book fan. So, here's my problem, Hub Comics is a great store that has the poor misfortune of not being Air conditioned. WTF, do you want to chase people out of there? My mind and fingertips said YES, I WANNA READ comics but my body said "Hell No" I'm a modern age marvel, and my love of comics hasn't matured yet, so, please hub comics, get some AC so I can give you money in support of your amazing business. My recent relocation to Somerville caused me to sadly have to let my old comic shop go. It was an amicable separation, I shed a tear, bit my lip and quickly exited before I changed my mind. I know from experience that long distance relationships are just too difficult to maintain. But Hub Comics is no rebound comic shop. It's only been a couple weeks but I can already tell this is the real deal. Even though Hub is still in the process of getting itself situated there in the nook of Bow St., they happily took on my page long pull list without hesitation. I thought Hub might be upset that I ended up not picking up my first couple weeks of books because I had to make that last trip back to the ex's (you know how that is) but they were totally cool with it. I of course felt obligated to spend some money there on my first visit and they have an excellent selection, everything a discerning comic geek could want. They organize their books a bit different than my last comic shop, but I can't hold that against them. When you're with a new place some adjustments are going to be expected. But the way Hub is set up, by genre, is very cool for the casual customer. If someone is particular to one style they don't have to wade through all the other stuff to find what they want. My boyfriend and I stopped into Hub Comics after grabbing some coffee and snacks over at Bloc 11 on a lazy Sunday afternoon. We were immediately greeted by Bub (cutest, friendliest dog in the whole world) and the owner's adorable son. James was tending to some energetic fifth graders talking about comics and cartoons. I'm not the new-comics-wednesday comic nerd I used to be, but I really liked the selection. Sounds like it will just be getting better too as they expand into the rest of the space. There was some excitement when we rounded Bow Street this morning and saw something: HUB COMICS! The shop is located right near Bloc 11, and we'd walked by it a few times and had suspicions that it might be a comic book store, and yep, there it was. It's nice on the inside, and bright green. There's definitely something for everyone here, and it's nice to see our square (the coolest of squares) get it's own comic book store. If they do subscriptions, Jesse is all over it. Since I just got through railing Magic Dragon Comics in Arlington, I wanted to temper things with a deservedly positive review. I didn't plan on stopping by today; I actually passed it on the way to Magic Dragon, pulled over, and am so thankful I did. The staff was incredibly friendly and approachable. I went in looking for a few specific books - they quickly helped me find them and were able to recommend others by the same writer. So, here's a story to tell you just how awesome Hub Comics is... One lazy Sunday afternoon, I strolled in here with the bf after brunching nearby. We were just browsing around when all of a sudden we heard this hurricane of a person come into the store and immediately start yelling that they need a gift for their husband. I turned around to see an elderly woman waving her arms around frantically at the guy behind the counter. Guy behind the counter very calmly asks if she's looking for anything in particular. Elderly woman yells that her husband loves comics and it's his birthday. She obviously had no clue what she was doing and was most likely going deaf and/or senile. After about 30 minutes, guy behind the counter finally convinced her to buy a t-shirt. The entire time he remained calm and patient, answering all of her questions, even when she became irate and condescending at times. I know I would have gotten to a point where I would've just been like, "lady, either buy something or GTFO!" Kudos to fantastic customer service and having a great selection of graphic novels and other merchandise that even a browser like myself can appreciate. I'm always amazed by the amount of stuff I can find to buy in here, and I'm not even a huge comics fan! read more

Here's the thing: I don't do comic books. Not pamphlets, anyway. If I buy them, they just fall on the floor and disintegrate. I like reading comics, but I can only really collect sturdy paperbacks and hardcovers. I'm just too hard on stuff. The other thing is, I actually live closer to Harvard Square than this place. I should be going to Million Year Picnic. But MYP is too cramped, too claustrophobic, and often just plain tough to browse in. Hub Comics, by contrast, is a revalation. Big windows let in plenty of sunlight (but it doesn't shine directly on the shelves, that's a no-no!), and there's something like 900 square feet of browsing space, which is fairly huge for a city comic shop. There's a remarkably diverse selection, from superhero funnybooks to artsy-fartsy graphic novels, to manga, to-- get this-- comics for CHILDREN. Amazing. The owner is often in the shop, and he and his pals have always been quick to order anything I wanted that I couldn't find in stock. There are comfy couches and chairs if you feel like browsing for several minutes instead of rushing in and out. There's even a big TV on the wall. In short, I love this place. It is exactly what I think a comic store ought to be-- old-school pamphlet fans can browse through new books and plenty of back issues, hipster jerks can sample the broad selection of local comix and indie trade paperbacks, manga otaku can get their fix of the latest installment of that orange jumpsuit ninja dude, and small children can feast on Archie and Disney comics. I make a point to go here at least once a month, and so should you! read more

i love you, hub comics. you're so cool. pros: always finding parking despite being in a busy area of town. cool looking shop. really interesting selection. extremely knowledgeable and helpful staff. i'm not really into superheroes or anime, so it's nice to have a local place where i can find the kind of stuff i want to read, like old school books, autobiographical comics, and local/new hand produced zines and comics, all while J can still also find the stuff he likes reading too. i especially have to give it to the staff - they are always pleasant and helpful, but the other day we were in there and i overheard this woman asking for a really, really bizarrely specific type of comic for some class she was either part of or teaching, i can't remember. she probably gave like five or six qualifiers that even on their own would be tough to find books about, and i feel like even the nicest most well meaning shop employees would have just stared at her until she left and been justified in doing so. but here, they didn't miss a beat and without seeming annoyed or put out at all, immediately had a handful of suggestions she seemed pretty intrigued by. (and frankly, so was i!) cons: no more domos in the plastic egg machine! also, it gets oppressively warm in here. i am a person who runs warm to begin with, but we could spend way longer in here if it didn't get so schweddy. (even on cool days.) so...maybe it's a good thing, actually. i could easily drop way too much money in this place. as it is i usually carry around three or four books and then have to whittle it down to one or two to avoid spending a hundred bucks. but it just leaves more stuff to come back for next time :) read more

I wish they had a larger selection of kids/YA comics, especially manga; it's a big niche that could be much better served. This is a great small shop with a big inventory. Has the super-hero fare you'd expect, plus a great selection of indie and local stuff. The staff is friendly, and can certainly offer good recommendations. Hub Comics invests in building community, and the community should support them...and of course, give comics a try. My biggest complaint has always been the awkward shelving, but they;re replacing it with user-friendly shelving...so, yay! read more

The Hub is like an indie rock icon among lesser, watered down, post-80s, hair-metal impersonator bands. I like that there's a fair collection of beautifully appointed graphic novels, a recommendation wall, and a well-organized weeklies section. I also like that you can sit on the floor and browse for an hour if necessary. Furthermore, what I really like, is that the last time I went to the Hub I attempted to buy a book which turned out not to have a price or be in the system. Instead of charging me the list price, Lou just gave it to me! He gave me a book! I WAS SO HAPPY. I went home with my book and my new comics and I celebrated. read more

Not only are James and his employees super helpful and nice, but the store is impeccably well-organized all the while offering comfy sitting spaces and TV monitors for extended visits. I can go here if I want DC or Marvel comics, if I want Gaiman, or if I want the latest work from local comic artists (and know that they'll have exactly what I'm looking for.) Best local comic shop in Somerville/Boston. My wife and I come to New England every year to visit her brother and every chance I get I come to Hub Comics. They have everything you're looking for. Whether you like capes and superheroes, indie books or just old school comics this is your home. No matter who has been manning the store they have always been helpful, kind and courteous. I have been to a bunch of stores and some of the sales people weren't too inviting. This shop is the opposite. Its bright and full of new and interesting books and a huge indie section. I am personally evolving in my quest to learn more about the LGBTQ community and I found two books to help me on my journey. A Quick and Easy Guide to They/Them Pronouns and The Quick and Easy Guide to Queer and Trans Identities. Both books are by Oni Press's imprint called Limerence. Never even knew that was a thing and I shop comics every week. Honestly this is why I shop local because you find so many cool and interesting things. Always shop local and visit a comic shop today! They seem really organized when it comes to pre-orders and pull lists too. Hub Comics is everything a neighborhood comic shop should be. Not only is it in a great location in Union Square, they have game nights, art nights, and a great selection of comics by local artists. Just inside the door there is a reading area for kids - a great place to wile away an hour after school. They have a phenomenal Twitter feed - @hubcomics - and they're always kind and welcoming in the store. Tellingly, my wife likes coming in as much as I do, so you know they're doing something right. This is the small local comic store you want to have nearby. The staff here are uniformly nice people who make solid recommendations and treat you like they're glad you came in. The selection is well-curated, and I often find what I go in to get. And they have a rewards program that helps make their prices competitive with online services. After spending a few years in NYC and dealing with the soul-crushingly awful staff, surly fellow buyers, and treat-your-customers-as-criminals security policies of places like Midtown and Forbidden Planet, it's refreshing to be back in Somerville and have places like Hub. In terms of inventory, this shop has what you could find anywhere else. Nothing special there. But what I really like is that they are very friendly and the shelves are so well organized and categorized by genre/publisher which you don't find at many shops. I brought my son in for Free Comics Day with the expectation of snagging a few comics for him. I was impressed with the time that the employees took to explain Free Comics Day. They were kind and friendly. I left purchasing $30 worth of comics. One was the first Sandman volume. When I went back to purchase the second volume, I went in just as Dave was going on break. I told him that I could come back, since I live in the area, but he was adamant about me coming in. I grabbed the second volume, and he proceeded to take me through the entire series - upcoming issues, what to read afterwards, and related tie ins. I was impressed by his enthusiasm and his passion. I left the store feeling f=great! What was supposed to be an in and out experience, ended up being an excellent time. I could purchase the remaining Sandman volumes on my Kindle for 1/2 the price, but then I wouldn't have an opportunity to deal with Dave and the excellent staff at Hub Comics. read more

Oh, I love this place! The owners are so friendly and helpful and they always have whatever I'm looking for. There's a plentiful stock of many different genres, space to sit and browse and plenty of space so you're not bumping into fellow shoppers. They also have a nice rewards program that let's you get a book free for every few you purchase over $10 (I think its like 10 books over $10? somethin like that). Dog owners seem welcome, and their dogs get treats too. So if you are like me and you can't have a dog but really really want one, Hub comics is not just good for a comics fix, its also good for a good ole fashion doggie petting fix. Plus every time I walk in there's always someone hanging around talking about creating comics or drawing. The place just feels like a creative percolator. In the interest of full disclosure, I'm friends with one of the dudes who runs the store. But that aside: this is a really, really solid comic shop. They have all the current stuff, but what gets me on Hub comics the most is their selection of trades and OGNS. It's crazy deep, they have most anything you'd be looking for on top of stuff you've never even heard of. I think it's one of the best local shops in the area this side of the outer Limits.
