If I had kids this is where I would be choosing for them to get their books. Plenty of CD's, DVDs and Rock and Roll vinyls I purchased upstairs, the guy behind the counter was so nice and talking to other locals with kids digging through the 10/$1 pokemon card bins. Was so friendly with me and informative. Was happy with what I paid. Went downstairs and browsed through the toys, I wasn't to afford a toy I wanted this time around but hoping when I come back I can! I also had a feeling I would find this figurine I missed out many years ago and beat myself up for constantly. Didn't find it this time around but when I go back if it's not so busy I will ask if they've seen. Downside is I had to drive around looking for some street parking since they don't have a lot. It was a busy Saturday, but finally found one. Also the aisles are a little tight, there were some times I felt trapped or couldn't get by people. But they're doing the best they can with the layout!

J and i have been coming here just about every couple weeks for a few months now, and i hesitated…read moreon how i would rate this place. in truth, if you had asked me my opinion after our first time in, it wouldn't have been good. let me just start out by admitting i really don't know shit about shit when it comes to comics. but, as the daughter of an avid record collector and record show organizer, i've been around a very similar circuit for my whole life. so when i say this place is lacking in the ambiance department and the staff is pretty apathetic, know that i'm not expecting to be waited on hand and foot inside an art gallery or anything. there are a LOT of books in this place. a ton. and yet, it simultaneously manages to look empty. like, it looks like a going out of business yard sale...but less lively. it's always empty and dead silent - all you can hear is the floor creaking and other people breathing. maybe i've watched too many episodes of the big bang theory, but they could really stand to get someone in there and decorate the place. i understand that to them, inventory is more important, but having a store that looks like this just really smacks of "i don't care." which was the same vibe i got from their "service." the first time we were in here, we hadn't yet figured out their organizational system and we were a little unsure of some release dates, so, we asked. and we were met with what amounted to "i don't know." is it out yet? when will it be out? are you sold out of it? where would it be in the store? are all pretty basic questions you should know the answer to or be able to look up if your only job is to sit in an empty comic book store all day every day. and if you have something, is it reeeeeeeeally too much to ask for you to get up and show me where it is instead of gesturing to nowhere in particular, so i give up looking and you lose a sale? i mean, jesus. okay, so. the bright side. easy parking, either on street or in the public lot next door. inside, again, lots of books. good deals, and they often have sales on not only the "regular" comics but also graphic novels. their setup is alphabetical, with separate sections for marvel, DC, books, and kid's. the "kid's" section is directly to your left when you walk in, for my fellow adventure time fans ;) and, for whatever reason, we've recently experienced much improved service. maybe we caught them on a string of perpetually bad days. maybe the big boss gave them a talking to. maybe they follow the high fidelity model and we've only just now earned our place as "regulars" and are thus deserving of being helped. *maybe* it's that J wrote an unflattering review elsewhere (after having a night and day experience visiting hub comics the same day) and a mutual acquaintance between J and NEC's employee said "hey, my friends are cool and you weren't, knock it off." who knows. but the last couple of times we've gotten the good service we should have gotten from day one. asking if we need help without prompting, helping us find comics, personal reviews/recommendations, giving out helpful information regarding ship dates, etc. so, we'll keep coming back. a big selection and low prices. as an urban vinyl/blind box toy collector, i do wish they had some non-comic items beyond some magic the gathering things and a few tshirts & pins, but hey, this IS a comic book store after all. i just wish we had our recent positive experiences from day one. i doubt most customers would be as forgiving as us, especially when you have the option of shopping online. take a hint, NEC. i want to see you reach your full potential and stick around!

I have stores that are closer and are good stores but Nec Malden has a lot of issues and trades and will help find what they don't and call around to find it.

You could spend a good chunk of time browsing through the bins and shelves. It is great that they have a train table in the kids area so they kids can play while you browse the books. I was searching for Lunar New Year books, but couldn't find any. They had a bin for the big holidays like Christmas, Halloween, Easter and a general holiday bin for smaller holidays. The employees were nice and can system search by author/title, but they couldn't do a search by general topic/genre.

This Newbury comics is part of a mall…read more I grew up on the original Newbury comics in Newbury st in Boston so this comic book store has a special place in my heart. However, the vibe has changed over the years and this location feels different than the one in Boston. This one feels more like a gift shop than the nostalgic collectors store that I grew up with. Anyways, got some pop figures for my nephew. They have a large collection. Staff seem friendly. Overall, I always find the stuff in Newbury to be interesting, especially gifting teenagers. I pre-ordered a…read morebook several months ago that arrived with a stain on the front cover, rather than risk them shipping another I decided to go to the store (30 minute drive) to do the exchange. After roaming around the store, I finally found the book (upstairs) and the restrooms (downstairs) - did I miss the store directory somewhere??? - and headed to the line. It was just before noon on a weekday and only one person was working at the register. I was 6th in line and 3 of the people ahead of me had complicated transactions involving B&N membership, what tote bag to pick out, etc...... FINALLY another employee came to the register (no one called for her, she just happened to be walking by) as I was the next in line, my exchange involved no paperwork and took about 15 seconds. During peak times, a second employee really needs to stay close and help out!!!
