I've already written a review of HairMates Salon in Stoneham, which is right around the corner from this store. Jade at HairMates is what gets me to Stoneham to begin with: the Book Oasis is one of the things that consistently makes me happy once I'm in town. This store has enough books to make any librarian happy. I was initially, and still am, drawn in by their nice selection of graphic novels near the register. They also have a nice box of $1.00 comics that I like to rifle through. I recently explored their Science Fiction & Fantasy paperbacks and was pleasantly surprised. They have a whole horror section, where I picked up some Stephen King classics and Massachusetts native Christopher Golden books that i know now to be out-of-print. I usually limit my visits to 15-20 minutes while David is getting his hair cut; the truth is, this store is so jam packed that I could spend the better part of an afternoon here. If you like books, you won't be disappointed. It's worth a special trip if you are in the area. The staff are always attentive and polite, but usually let me look at my books without hovering too much. Guys, it's so much better than a Barnes & Noble. And better prices to boot. The Book Oasis lives up to its name completely. In the middle of Stoneham, a crazy little Boston suburb with nothing to do, sits this little peace of heaven. The owner and his wife run the shop pretty much themselves. While he runs the book/business side, his wife makes beautiful jewelry and handbags (one of which I own). They're all sewn out of fabric and the print on mine is a beautiful butterfly motif that gets a lot of compliments. On to the books! They have a ton of newer releases, romance, mystery, sci fi, regional, philosophy, etc. etc. I always come to peruse the classics though. I've bought copies of Zola, Wollstonecraft, Whitman, and the list goes on. They also always have a lit theory section (a difficult section to find in any bookstore, new or used) that I love and it always has something interesting in it. During one of my last visits the owner was telling me how he was expanding and had bought the property next door. I hope this endeavor proved to be fruitful! San Diego is full of used book stores, but they don't come close to the charm of my hometown favorite. + You can also get a cool little purchase tracker card for discounts! read more

Excellent little used bookstore crammed to the brim with mostly mass market paperbacks but many hidden gems can be found. Took some time finding a parking spot on a side street as it seems smack dab in the middle of a busy intersection with minimal street parking but it was worth it. Wandered in to a surprisingly cool room with classical radio playing, always a calming addition when perusing for books. First searched the classics section and found Nine Stories by JD Salinger and then The Plague by Camus, always heard it was a good one. Browsed some more though didn't find the Nonfiction section as there was A LOT of mass market paperbacks (think romantic novels and crime thrillers), so I asked one of the owners (husband and wife team I suspected) for any works by Don Delillo, a favorite of mine currently. He lead me over to the rack and even found Ratner's Star. A bit too tattered for me but ended up with a newish copy of The Third Policeman, already started it and it's pretty good so far! This is a not so hidden gem of a book store. We found it while wondering around after ordering take out at a local eatery. It is quite organized and we were able to find a book that my daughter had been searching for. I've since gone back and purchased other books, all in great condition. Cute little local bookstore. It reminds me of what "Book Ends" in Winchester was like 15 years ago. This is a quaint little used-book shop right on Main Street near the center of town. I've been in a number of times. I once brought in about 30 books to sell. She paid me for about 15 of them, but the rest she did not need, so I "donated" them to the store. I didn't get much for the books I brought in - but how much do you expect for used books? A quirky setup - with 2 smaller rooms tucked away - one for kids' books and one for self-help and history. But you can browse here nicely and pick up something that interests you fairly cheaply. They sell some new toys and notecards and toys here too. It's a cute little shop. You don't find many like this around here these days.... read more

As a book nerd, I'm always looking for local places that have that homey atmosphere where I could easily curl into a chair and read. This nails it on the head (plus it has a comfy chair in case you want to peruse before buying). The owners are extremely friendly and always ready with suggestions, plus they take in your books for shelving - those they don't use they'll donate. I've always found 3-4 books each time I go and they're priced accordingly. Have found some interesting finds and started new series right from this store. I love this bookstore because it is so cozy and well-organized. Everything is nicely displayed and usually I can find whatever it is that I am looking for, plus some other good stuff I didn't even know I wanted. The last time I visited they had a whole section devoted to summer reading lists for the local highschools. I recommend browsing this area for some fun (and some not-so-fun) summer beach reads. I was also inspired to check out the teen section, where I nabbed some Nancy Drews and Christopher Pike ("Chain Letter" is still awesome 20 yrs later!). The workers are always very sweet and helpful and I usually get a coupon towards my next purchase. I only deducted a star because I think the prices are a smidge high. read more

I was looking for certain books for my son for Christmas. Every where I went didn't have the books. I even tried Barnes and noble along with amazon books (I'm a prime member) neither store had the books I was looking for either and wouldn't be in until after Christmas. I found this store just by a simple bookstore search on google. I filled out their form that they have on line and in minutes I had a response. They didn't have the books in store but order them for me and guaranteed they would be in before Christmas. I spoke/emailed with Deb one of the owners. She always responded immediately, kept me updated with what was going on with my order. My order came in, I went to pick them up today (first time I set foot into the store) Dan (the other owner) was there and he was amazing! So nice and polite. The store itself is amazing. They have new and used books and have a members card. This is the kind of store I love. Local and family owned. Also, Deb makes a lot of hand made items. I bought my son a patriots wallet. Sorry for the kind of long review but this store deserves a trillion likes. If you're a book lover or know someone that is this the spot. This place is awesome! A sea of used (and some new) books that can appeal to any audience. The best idea is to go in there with nothing particular in mind, since it is a used bookstore sometimes they don't have what you are looking for on your visit. The place reminds me a bit from Hannah and Her Sisters (but much, much neater). I love these guys, and the store itself stands apart from a dying breed. I have shopped the Book Oasis since it opened several years ago. The assortment only grows and becomes more interesting over time. I have found interesting books by just browsing through the stacks or in the featured book displays. They also have done several special orders for books I've seen mentioned in reviews or articles, even if they are obscure titles. The Book Oasis is always a pleasant place to visit and an interesting place to shop for books. I used to have to travel to Cambridge or Vermont or some pretentious socialist enclave for books. I don't have to do that any more! We all know that many readers have retreated from the physical world and buy their books on-line. The world can certainly be your book store these days, but there is just no substitute for physically handling a book and reading a few pages before buying. I like having a Stop and Shop in Winchester, even if it can't be super-sized due to the Geography of a town that had the original name of Waterfield. Every time I had a concern, I went to the courtesy booth, where people would be expected to have answers. Not stock clerks or consignment people. Every time I had prompt and courteous guidance. I learned that stocking items can be complicated due to new constantly updated "computerese". I showed the man. called by the courtesy people, where my missing cottage cheese was supposed to be and they looked for it, and had been ordering it using one computer strategy, and used a different one, and now I can count on my favorite cottage cheese. I love this store!!! The Husband and Wife who own it are very gracious. My children choose books on Amazon and send me the wish list. I then walk up to the Book Oasis hand them the list and they walk around the store and get me the books. Most of the time they are less money then Amazon. You might pass right by this place without noticing, unless the weather is nice out and they have the 5 foot knight in armor on the side walk to slow you a bit and notice the homemade sign and retro curtains of this little place. Actually, its not even that little, but its got an intimate feel. They have piles of books here, a better selection than most used book shops (Which are harder to come by these days) and they even have a foreign language selection that has good finds. They also have cookbooks and a good kids section. The prices are the best part when you consider the great books they have. I stocked up on everything Kurt Vonnegut once, got 5 of his books and paid 7 dollars! They even had a number of copies of Slaughterhouse Five so later I bought a bunch of them for under ten dollars to hand out to friends who I thought would like the book. The Staff is super friendly but not intrusive or overly talkative like some independent places. So just keep your eyes open for the place across from the gas station - you might miss it. read more

I think the owners of this bookstore do a great job and take great pride in their business, and are very helpful if you need to find something. They have a nice selection of fiction and non fiction books (fiction bigger than the non-fiction) They also do a stamp card incentive program.
