Glad it's still around, still indie, but taken over by trends, lost its identity, it's generic, with products you can find anywhere else (bubble heads anyone, figures, etc). I was initially excited to visit Newbury Comics on Newbury Street -- it felt refreshing to see a local record shop still surviving in Boston. But that excitement faded quickly when I realized this location prioritizes profit over customer loyalty or service. Nearly everything in the store is marked up *far beyond* reasonable retail pricing. We're talking double, sometimes triple, what you'd pay on Amazon or through other legitimate retailers. It's especially outrageous with collectibles -- for example, the new **Prismatic Evolution Elite Trainer Box** (MSRP \$50) is being sold here for **over \$160**, and the **Prismatic Evolutions Super-Premium Collection** (MSRP \$90) is listed at **more than \$200**. That's not a markup -- that's scalping. Vinyl records are just as bad -- most titles are easily found online for half the price. It's frustrating because you want to support a local spot, but they make it impossible with these exploitative pricing practices. Bottom line: This isn't a cool local shop anymore. It's a tourist trap with scalper energy. Do yourself a favor -- shop online or support stores that value their customers, not just their wallets. read more

This is everything you could want in a comic book store and more. They have Funkos and novelty socks and merch from various licensed characters and properties. And the store is just packed to the brim with stuff. It can be a little overwhelming and even hard to navigate because there's just so much to look at. I've wanted to come here since college, though, after my old roommate gave me a beer glass with the Newbury Comics logo. I don't have the glass anymore so I decided to get something else with the logo: a tote bag. It's black and white and has the logo on the front and the back says: A Wicked Good Tote. It's a cute Boston souvenir, too. They actually had quite a few nice tote bags to choose from. I also love the record store downstairs. If I actually had enough room in my suitcase I would have properly shopped it. But I was just visiting. So cool, though. Love the neon signs down there too. I love Newbury Comics at all its locations. But this location might be my favorite not only because you're in the center of Boston, but it's two floors of just amazing things. They have an assortment of a monopoly boards different versions of Clue. They have this huge box of Cards Against Humanity, they have tons of books loads of Funko Pops. I even saw a pet rock there. I haven't seen one of those since I had one as a kid. The staff is nice, there was one Gentleman on the second floor that helped me he was very knowledgeable about anime. I'm definitely going back and they're going to have all my money because there's so many things there that I want. read more

I am a big comic book fan so I enjoy coming here while in Boston. I used to visit the Barnes and Noble in the Prudential center for my comic book reading but it is closed now. Newbury Comics has two floors of toys. comic books, and other collectables. You can go upstairs and view the latest issues and other manga options. This place is always packed with other fans enjoying their day. There is not much seating space to read and enjoy the latest issues. On the weekends it closes early by 7pm which was a disappointment. read more

Stopped here years ago before I started collecting records and didn't buy anything, but on this trip to Boston I was looking forward to going back. Most of what was in the downstairs section was similar to a the size and selection of any regular record store that specializes mostly in new releases. I spent most of my time combing through their bins of Newbury exclusive titles on the main floor. It seemed they had many of the titles I've seen them release the last few years in stock, even if it was sold out online before it was released. Many of the prices matched what's shown online if it was lower than what it was originally listed for. Things that appear to be less freely available were at the original price or slightly more, but certainly not the insane numbers that you sometimes see online. I grabbed a Dropkick Murphys record on clearance because when in Rome. I really didn't look at anything else in the store besides records but they had enough for my wife to look at so I wasn't bothered with "are you almost done yet?" the whole time which is always a plus for me in any record store. Will definitely come back next time I visit Boston. read more

Visited the faneuil hall store this afternoon 11/07/25 with my son who is intellectually disabled and my older daughter. We were all shopping on the second level where my son had just picked out a figure I was going to purchase for him and as we approached the register to check out there were 2 young girls standing behind the counter talking to each other and as my son put the figure down on the counter we were told by the young black girl employee that we had to go downstairs to buy the item so I was like 'okay ,no problem' but my son misthought that in his own mind we could not purchase it at all and he became a little overwhelmed and agitated so I asked how to get downstairs and the young black girl kind of rolled her eyes like we were actually bothering her and gave us directions to the staircase. What is her problem , I remember thinking? So as my son and I began walking away to go pay for his figure my daughter who was trailing a little behind us because she had been looking at the vinyl records started to follow us and when she passed the register she says she heard the young black girl say to the other young girl employee ''Man, I wouldn't want to deal with a kid like that''. Are you kidding me?!! What kind of person says that out loud where others could hear them?! My daughter waited until we left the store to tell me what she heard and showed my a photo she snapped of the 2 girl employees who I recognized. I really wanted to go back in to speak to a manager but I couldn't due to the fact that I had my son with me. I will say that when the 3 of us got home and I told my wife who works in that area she said she will be stopping in to speak to someone about this incident. My only emotional outlet will be to write this review. Newbury Comics, I know you are a youth oriented business but try to hire more mature young people. They are out there but this employee in question is not one of them! And to the girl employee.... My daughter who you more than likely not aware was with us overheard you and you should be ashamed of yourself! Good luck dealing with my wife! read more

My friend and I came in here to grab a specific item which they had conveniently placed right at the front desk. The woman at the register was incredibly friendly and efficient. She even advised my friend of the possibility of the supply running low or even being sold out as, like most things, was on back order. Kpop albums, shelves full of it, and on sale is too! The only place in Boston that sells kpop albums with a large selection of the most popular groups including BTS, EXO, Shinee, Wanna One, Twice, Red Velvet, as well as newer groups like Pentagon and Loona. Solid sales like $25 for a full album or mini album, which is definitely cheaper than getting it online and paying shipping. The rest of the store is stocked with CDs, comics, and other things I don't know as much about, but I do know they have the cutest selection of Pusheen plushies and shirts, as well as We Bare Bears collectibles. Overall, very cute and very perfect for gift shopping (or treat yourself shopping). This is probably my go-to place for cute, quirky, albeit a little pricey gifts. read more

Okay store, but DO NOT BUY POKÉMON CARDS FROM THIS COMPANY. They up charge all their packs and they RE-SEAL them before security tagging them. I think if the inside of my brain was a store, it would probably be a Newbury Comics. Where else can you find all your fandom memorabilia, plus records, awesome t-shirts, manga, and a dizzying array of Funko Pop figurines all under one roof? This is the OG location, and it's really awesome to visit the shop that started it all, way back in 1978. Of course, it's undergone some cosmetic transformations since then (they've actually recently renovated the Newbury Street location to feature a multilevel setup with ample space for all of the wonderfully geeky goodies), but it still manages to retain the quirky kitschiness that the New England-based brand is so well known for. This is an amazing place to purchase gifts for pretty much anyone, as they carry items to satisfy every fandom imaginable, from the predictable Harry Potter and Star Wars nerds to lesser known anime and comics as well. The merchandise is a bit on the pricier side, but the look on your loved one's face when they see that you got them an impossible to find Audrey II from Little Shop of Horrors Funko Pop for their birthday will be well worth it. This is a fun little joint with a friendly staff and a wide selection, but let's be honest, it feels like a record shop and a comic store had a threesome with a hot topic. I came in for their "buy 2 get 1 free" promotion on graphic novels and manga. The place was packed with all sorts of fans. It had a nice vibe throughout and everyone I asked for help was incredible, even the dude with the coffee cup in his hand who I'm positive I interrupted his break. He helped me track down Volume 1 of Black Hammer. It may have felt like the nerd equivalent of a KFC/Taco Bell/Pizza Hut mashup (if you know, you know), but I enjoyed the place and would easily come back the next time I'm in Boston. read more

I like this store, but wtf. I bought three pairs of socks and the guy didn't remove any of the security tags. He said if I beep through the door that I should just keep walking. I didn't think anything of it and then I noticed the tags were still on so I returned to get them removed. Then on Christmas (today) my dad opened a pair of oven mitts I bought from here and lo and behold the security tag was still on the mitts. So annoying, I can't return it because I'm leaving tomorrow morning and now I have to figure out how to remove it myself. Hopefully the ink doesn't get everywhere. I like this store a lot but please remove the freaking tags when your customers buy your shit. Went to Boston to get a feel for what colleges to apply to and popped into newbury comics. They kind of remind me of a hot topic but way better and it almost reminds me of a prank gift shop because of all the fun things. For example I bought a dumpster fire nightlight and a RBG sticker that makes it look like she's riding in my car. I found stuff that was popular for ex those candles with skeletons in them. Ohhhhh Newbury Comics..how you've changed. This was my go-to spot for DVDs, CDs, & Vinyl when I used to live here back in the day..and now those sections are almost nonexistent in the store. Well..their Vinyl section has actually grown, which is cool, but I mainly bought DVDs and CDs here. I'm not going to give them a bad review because of this tho..they had to change with the times to survive..they upped their Comic Book, Clothing, and other specialty merchandise game. It was honestly just so nice to see them still alive on Newbury street when so many other places have disappeared from there (RIP Tower Records/Virgin Megastore/Best Buy, JP Licks, Charlie's Saloon, TGI Friday's). I really wanted to buy a DVD or CD from here for old times sake..but with their limited selection I came up short. I ended up getting a couple of T-Shirts instead just to support the store. I really wanted one with their logo on it but the few that they had had very limited sizes. It's nerdy enough for the childhood comic book/anime fan within us but cool and hip enough for us to be seen. Vinyls, CDs, DVDs, comic books, manga novels, AND action figures? Sure the comic book selection is rather limited but did you see all the action figures? It's like f.y.e. on steroids. What separates the flagship location of Newbury Comics out from its music megastore bretheren (besides the fact that it's still in business) is its careful, and silly, curation. On first glance, the whole place seems to be a mess of random products. But, looking closer, there is a silly method to their madness. For example, the Duck Dynasty action figures (such a thing existing scares me) are showcased above the country music. And they sell a few "smoking" accessories above the reggae section for some reason. It's fun just to wander around the store and see how many random trinkets and surprises they have. They also have an extensive Boston sports section. I bought a "Yankees Suck" bumper sticker from this collection since there are some things that almost everyone can agree on no matter if they're a Boston local or a tourist. For those who still buy CDs instead of using Spotify, their prices for used music are dirt cheap. It's the kind of place where you're tempted to buy a one hit wonder's CD for $3.99 if you're not careful and leave humming the hit even if you don't purchase it (just not too loudly since the staff seems a bit judgy). As far as what they're famous for, comics and records, they don't have nearly as many as their name would imply. The comic selection is current titles of popular books and a few graphic novels. Their records are what you might expect in any used record store (a.k.a. cheesy 70s yacht rock). The flagship NC. It's changed a lot, even while I worked for the company. These days they've got a huge emphasis on vinyl, used dvds/cds, urban fashion, and designer toys. But you'll still see some of the weird random stuff they've been selling for years. It's a staple for the city and New England in general. Newbury Comics will live in infamy as the place where I purchased my "date" for Halloween 2005: a large plastic penguin. My "date" and I really had some good times on that rockin' Halloween night. We partied out in Allston, got heckled by some drunk guys on the T and he even took a couple shots of something or other in the little penguin butt, thanks to my friend who was dressed up as a nurse and got a little crazy with her syringe. My beloved recently was the first item to sell at the bargain price of $2 at my last garage sale. So if you are ever in need of strange plastic animals to use as escorts on Halloween, Newbury Comics has got you covered. It also seems to be the only place you can buy BU's porn magazine Boink, but I am not sure if they are still selling it. It got kind of lame after the first couple issues. I don't think I've ever actually bought a CD or DVD or anything here but it's fun to come and browse. Interesting selection of random plastic crap and funky tights and fishnets and things. Such a cool, clean, unique store! There's three levels, so be sure to explore every floor. You'll find WALLS UPON WALLS of Pop figurines-- cartoons, anime characters, food mascots, and everything in between. I was impressed that they had all of the Addams Family, and my boyfriend found all of the My Hero Academia pops. They also have comics, novels, calendars, stationery (mostly on the upper level), as well as records and music on the lower level. I found a few Liz Climo books, which are super hard to find, as well as some original Archie comics. They also have dedicated sections for certain shows/characters where you can shop their merch (e.g., Bob's Burgers, Game of Thrones, Studio Ghibli, etc.). It's like a super unique Barnes & Noble! A great place to buy gifts for those "hard to shop for" people. Not to mention, the employees are extremely friendly and know where everything is in the store. We will definitely be back! read more
