Oh my goodness, cheap thrills music, where do I even begin. One day I was in this wonderful store, and I was browsing through the delightful CD selection, when my eyes locked onto a beautiful sight; Crackwhore - Somebody Loves You. This CD is truly a blessing from the heavens and delivered to us via the prophet Robert. This is both the greatest album in history, and the greatest album of today. This is what happens when you search through a vault of precious 24 karat gold, and still manage to leave with the highest quality platinum. This CD ruined all other albums for me, nothing else even holds a candle. The beautiful singing, the masterful guitar work, the majestic drumming, God I can't even accurately describe how exquisite it is. I immediately wished to purchase this masterpiece, but as this work of art was so coveted, as at the time there was zero information easily findable on the internet, the store owner and I reached an agreement. We would do research on how much the CD originally sold for and I would later return to this treasure trove to agree on a price. 1 week later I made my return, and after discovering that it originally sold for an affordable 5 U.S dollars, the prophet Robert, in all of his wondrous generosity, let me have it for 10. That is the story of how I obtained the pinnacle of human expression in music form on one, inexpensive, incredible CD. This store is nothing short of amazing! It's jam packed, honestly overflowing, with records. There's little room to walk, and you might have a slightly hard time getting around someone, but that just adds to the fun for me! I found a ton of Joan Baez and Judy Collins, but this store has every genre imaginable. The owner is super knowledgeable and will happily tell you stories about his time in the record industry (ask about Cher at Tower Records). I don't like writing a negative review, but Rob hosed me and accused me of trying to rip him off. I'm having a nice time talking to the guy for hours, seriously spent the whole afternoon browsing and chatting. He literally has tons of records to browse, if you can access them, the store is comically deep in records. You seriously cannot walk around normally. Its going to be a long day if you like to dig. He also tells me he prices on the fly at half market value. So, at the end of the day, he prices the records and tells me a certain record I'm interested in sells for $80, so I can have it for $40. I also buy a few records with conditions described on a protective sleeve (like EX, 1st pressing or NM). Generally, I'm a little disappointed in the prices ... nothing at all, no matter how common or unwanted, below $5, and many at $10, but I spend $150 to get a sense of this place. Here's my deal. I have bought and sold 1000s of records myself and have never had issues with buyers not finding my grading accurate. I have about 600 feedback points on Discogs with a 99.6% positive rating. I'm not perfect, but I really know the grading scale. So how were these records? The $80-record only sells for $20. The claimed EX record is only VG. The claimed NM record is VG+. The 1st presses are not 1st presses. Overall, I paid very close to Discog prices on each item. Not a single bargain, and a few rip offs. So, I let the guy know via text and he corresponds with me. He likes to communicate, I'll give him that. So, I let him know I plan to return the records for credit but it'll be a few weeks because life is busy and he's not too near my home. At this point I would had given him 3/5 stars with the potential for more, but then I made it over. After rehashing everything, first he tells me he can't play grade because his TT is broken and when he looks at the two records I brought back and he agrees that their conditions don't match the description. Next he ACCUSES ME of bringing him back different records. Seriously. So I walk away without an argument and that's the last time I ever go there. tl/dr. shop is dangerously dense with record stock, maybe you gotta see it to believe it, he overcharges, grades inaccurately, never shuts up, and accuses customers of cheating him. You would be better off buying online, without ANY doubt. I HATE saying it, but it's true. read more

While browsing here, I was BARELY able to fit through the tiny aisles and haphazard stacks of records on the floor. I am not exaggerating in the slightest. Additionally, the shop is full of dust and smells like a basement, which is never a good sign. The owner didn't make any attempt to greet us when we entered the shop, and just stared at us when we approached, making me think he was just a strange patron. And because he was not paying any attention to us, we accidentally happened into his entirely unmarked and open "back section" in the center of the store. When he finally noticed, he implied that I couldn't pay for the two records I wanted to ask about (no prices on anything) and grabbed them from me. On top of that, he made a snide remark about another album that I was interested in buying. After that, I just decided to leave, as I'm not sure I'd like to give money to anyone who is so rude to their potential customers. read more

What a joke. The front door is completely blocked by records and there's no sign in front to even indicate that it's open or a human is inside. I then called and the dude who answered basically said I couldn't come in because he just a new shipment of records and then tells me he doesn't have what I'm looking for. A real waste of time. The owner Rob is awesome!! He has stories on top of stories and will keep you thoroughly entertained while your there. He has quality stuff over all genres and will take something back no questions asked if you take it home and it plays not like you had expected. Very decent pricing too considering today's market. The only downside is the store itself. He has so much stuff its like walking into a hoarders house. Very little room to move around to just sift through his collection. Best thing to do is if you know exactly what you are looking for, call in advance. Sometimes it takes him a bit to locate it. But if you don't mind hearing some great music stories will he searches for it, then just head down and roll the dice!! read more

Rob has a few lifetimes worth of music crammed into his space and I would love to browse it all! I have been shopping there since the early 2010's and rarely leave without securing what I came for and some other titles I never knew I wanted. As time as gone on, and many other reviews reflect this sentiment, the retail space has become more storage than store, but Rob has a decent enough idea where specific things are if you know what you are looking for. I also second the notion that he is knowledgeable and affable and most importantly reasonable. I have purchased some of the gems of my collection from Rob and have not been disappointed. Many of the records he has in stock aren't priced in advance and that coupled with the layout can be restrictive to newer collectors or people used to a more conventional setup - but in my experience his pricing has been transparent and sourced from places that are legitimate and readily available to me as well. read more

Cheap Thrills Music is a great record shop, and by far the best (and only) in the Dedham area. It sits in a small strip plaza along Riverside Drive, overlooking the busy VFW Parkway and lovely Charles River by the West Roxbury border. Parking is available on street, and never difficult to find (heck, this section of Dedham is never too busy). Shop is great if you're looking for any sorts of records, CD's, DVD's, or music lessons. The owner, Robert, is very friendly, kind, and extremely knowledgeable about everything in the store (and locating everything!). The store is a bit "busy" in terms of product, but for a independent record store, it still is a fine place, with some great treasures. Definitely a spot to check out. We love Rob's place! This is a real gem - you can get lost in the stacks for hours looking through the amazing records that Rob has. Rob himself is the reason why this place is so amazing - he is so knowledgable about music and will remember who you are and what you enjoy listening to. He gives great deals and will keep you wanting to return. Is the place crowded? Sure! But that means that there's just more inventory to look at. Cheap Thrills sounds like one of those charming independent record shops you can spend an afternoon at, getting lost and unearthing gems. That's certainly what I expected to see when I saw it on Yelp. What I arrived at was stuffy, dusty, poorly lit, disorganized and treacherous. Piles and crates and stacks of records all over the floors that you had to step over just to browse. Seriously. I couldn't get five feet inside the store without having to step over a large leaning stack of LPs. This is what happens when a proprietor says, "I'll get to that later," and later becomes years. Few titles priced, so once you've put a nice stack together, you're at the dude's mercy. "I'll take seven for that, and thir - fifteen for that, and - oh, didn't mean to sell that." Cash and check only. In 2014. Dude says there's an ATM at the 7-11. Can't be bothered to even get a Square. Charming policy? Eccentric? How about annoying? Looks like a hoarder's house. It would be a real thrill if it was, say, your dead uncle's basement, but as a store where you're expected to browse and spend money, it sucks just a little bit. But hey, trip and fall and maybe you can own the place. Clean it up and I might even shop there. read more

Cheap Thrills Music is a throwback to a time when you could walk into a record store and deal with someone who knows absolutely everything about what he sells. CTM is a vinyl lovers paradise with albums for every musical taste. Most of the albums are in very good to pristine condition and sell for around $5, with some mint ones in the $10 range. If you have several hours to spare then strike up a conversation with the owner Bob, who was an original backer of WZLX in the mid-80's. He is full of great information on the recording industry and artists. Most of the classic rock-n-roll artists are on the right side of the store in alphabetical order, but there are tons of other collections in bins and on the floor. The best part of being in there is looking for one album and finding five that interest you more. He's got about 30,000 albums in storage and the store is just a small part of the inventory. read more

The store is full of memorabilia, records, cds concert t shirts etc etc etc. Its hard to see from the street when you are driving b/c this is a busy intersection but its adjoined to the pizza place (which i hear is not very good). The three stars is A-OK according to Yelp. So that is good for this place. First, as many have noted, the place is jam packed with vinyl and music related stuff. There are plenty of decent shape discs crammed in here, and still a bit of space to navigate around. But there is very little organization here. So wading into the piles is great if you have time to kill and nowhere to be and want to see what you can find. But if you are in any way averse to hoarding ocd environments, this can drive you batty fast. So it is a nice jam packed record shop and there are thousands in here, and yes, I did find a fairly rare disc in reasonable shape that got priced by the owner on the spot and not out of line. But if you like to browse by artist or genre, and get bugged by chaos and not into pricing being a mystery, be prepared. It is nice to be able to have a nice old storefront up and running, and nice to see a small ghost of the old Charles River recreational area from 100 years ago, which is what this area was. I do try to visit this place when in the area. But I do have to be in the mood for it. read more

This is a music collectors paradise! I've met the owner (Rob), and I became an acquaintance with him after only a visit or two. The store itself is loaded with cassettes, CD's and vinyl. This vinyl is often used, but they're mostly in incredible condition. Everything is very fairly priced, and Rob is very welcoming. He knows what he's doing, and actually knows his way around these massive piles of vinyl. In addition to that, he knows about ALL the music he has, and is often opening discussions about it. I enjoyed sifting through the many box's at the front of the store & that there was even a stool to scoot back & forth on while doing so. I went to this record store for the first time a few weeks ago since this is about the closest used record store to me. I did not read any reviews beforehand so I had no idea what to expect and went in without any predisposition. The place is small and rather difficult to navigate. There are record crates all about the floor along with used audio equipment. You have to be very deliberate where you walk. If there is more than 1 customer in the store it can get a bit tricky. There's a middle section I didn't even attempt to try to get into due to my ever expanding girth. It's a bit overwhelming when you walk in and it really isn't conducive to flipping through albums on a mass scale. The other big problem is they don't accept credit cards. Since I didn't know this ahead of time I was very limited to what I could buy since I don't typically carry a lot of cash on my person. they would have made about 4 times what I bought that day had they accepted plastic to pay for the vinyl. Having been to many a used record store and bought many on ebay, I'd say their prices are extremely reasonable and most of the albums I looked at were in near mint condition. I'm not interested in albums that looked like someone cleaned them with a brillo pad. The other thing to be careful about is engaging the owner in conversation. If you're in a hurry then avoid conversation at all costs. He's a knowledgeable, nice guy and has many very interesting tales to tell. He'll tell you all of them one after the other in great detail, so my advice is to hand over the cash for the records and then immediately jump out of the window. Sarcasm aside, all in all it was a positive experience and I found a record in NM condition I had been wanting for a while. I will go back for sure but this time with ample cash reserves and ear plugs. read more

Cheap Thrills Music is the greatest record shop in the Boston area. There is an amazing selection of vinyl, CDs, tapes, and even used audio equipment. If you are looking for something, chances are you will be able to find it here. If not, just ask the owner Rob and he'll likely be able to put his hands on it. This shop is so full of amazing finds that you can spend hours and hours just sifting through the shelves, bins, and stacks of records. Yes, the shop is a little dirty. Yes, the shop looks like it's bursting to the brim with boxes, bins and stacks of records. Yes, it is often difficult to move around. These are, in my opinion, absolute selling points. The possibility of finding gold is everywhere. I have pulled some real gems out of this shop and half the fun is sorting through everything. Side note: if you are thrown off a bit by the organizational system, ask Rob-he knows exactly where everything is. They are also always getting new records in and I make it a point to stop by every few weeks to see what's new. This place truly is my happy place (no joke, I come visit Cheap Thrills whenever I've had a tough day at work and never leave empty handed). Cheap Thrills simply put is the best record store i've been to in Massachusetts. The store itself is absolutely packed, I mean I have never seen so many copies of Led Zeppelin IV in my entire life. Rob has curated a collection the likes of which you can only dream about. In many cases I was able to choose through multiple copies of the same album to fit my budget, and preference. I.E (Mono,stereo,Dust jacket condition etc) The owner Rob has infectious passion for music, and is a walking encyclopedia of knowledge. Throughout my brief two hours in the store, I learned tons of fascinating info about musicians, and was introduced to tons of great artists I had never heard of. I want to preface all this by saying I walked into the store with my iphone and played him some obscure song , and within minutes he had a stack of albums for me to go through. Shopping at Cheap Thrills is an intimate experience, all in the name of music, no pretentiousness, great prices and good company. I cannot praise this shop enough, If you have never been, you absolutely have to check it out, otherwise you are truly missing out. read more

I joined Yelp with the express purpose of writing a review for Cheap Thrills. I've visited four or five times, with the first two to three visits coming a couple years ago, and my last two visits coming within the last two weeks. Most of the reviews on this site have already covered a good number of the pros and cons of this establishment: great selection, extreme disorganization, very reasonable pricing, and an owner who knows a heck of a lot about music. However, something happened during my last visit that rubbed me the wrong way. My 11 year old son and I had been browsing in the shop for about 15 minutes while the owner (Rob) noodled on his guitar behind the counter. This was perfectly fine: he'd stop whenever my son and I asked a question, and he even popped up from behind the counter to answer a pricing question about a record. Shortly thereafter, a young man showed up with his guitar, at which point Rob moved to a corner of the store with the young man and started giving a guitar lesson...during regular business hours. Odd as that was (and it's quite odd, IMHO), if he'd said something to us along the lines of, "hey, I'm about to give a lesson, but you guys just interrupt us if you have any questions or are ready to check out," it would have been totally cool. But as it was, we were stuck with a stack of four records, two tapes, and one game...and no indication as to whether or not we were welcome to interrupt the lesson to get pricing / check out. It was awkward, it was rude, and it was unprofessional. Perhaps a more assertive person might have dealt with the situation differently, but my inclination was simply to put down the things that we'd picked out and take our business elsewhere. I'm honestly not sure if I would visit again based upon this experience, and it breaks my heart. If none of this sounds like a deal-breaker to you, than by all means pay this store a visit. You'll most certainly find something that you're looking for, and Rob's pricing is more than fair. I'm just not the type to yell "Shut up and take my money!" when I'm ready to checkout at a store. read more

Went in here once and found a nice stack of albums to purchase, one of which was a Bruce Johnston record that had a $20 price tag. I went across the street to use the ATM and while I was gone, the owner looked up my stack of records on EBay. When I returned from the ATM, the $20 Bruce Johnston record was now $70. I will NEVER spend a another dime at this shop due to the owner's dishonest and shortsighted tactics. I spend a lot of $ on records and had the owner done the right thing and simply honored HIS OWN PRICED ITEM then he would have made a new faithful customer. Poor form, dude! read more

This is a hidden gem for vinyl diggers. I stumbled upon it while in the area, and as soon as i walked in, i found a room full of records from wall to wall, floor to roof. This is my favorite type of record store: not heavily trafficked (so all the good stuff is still here), moderately organized yet unpredictable (so you might find a special metal album amidst a pile of 50s pop music), and an owner who knows his stuff about music. The owner, Rob, had lots of insightful cool stories to tell about artists from the past and the lesser known truths about them. The variety is excellent, lots of rock styles, rnb and soul classics, a nice latin section, experimental, psychedelic, soundtracks, and more. Most of the interesting records i found were not ones you would usually find in most record stores. I found this to be one of my most meaningful digging experiences in a long time. Though the place is a bit hard to maneuver around in due to the heavy volume of records, these are my favorite types of stores because you literally can't predict where that special album might be. read more

If you are looking for something specific, ask the friendly owner Rob and there is a very high chance he'll have it. A word of caution for this excellent store: bring cash, check, or a paypal account because cards aren't accepted. Ok True story!! Wife and I was at savers in Norwood I was looking for a 8 track tape to test out a 8 track player I was going to sell on ebay. I couldn't find any and asked a worker if they have any and he said no but you might want to check out a place called Cheap Thrills Music in Dedham. So I googled it and got the directions. We pull up and walk in and I say to myself "Oh No!" I walk in for a 50 cent 8 track and walk out with 100.00 worth of Albums for myself!! LOL!!! The Owner is a super nice guy!! My wife and I talked to him for about 30 minutes about Music. I could of talked to him all day. He was in the music business and told us amazing stories!! Now the store itself is a bit had to get around because he has the biggest used Record collection I have scene in a small shop. There is a method to his madness though. If you can't find what your looking for just ask him he know exactly what he has and where it is. His prices are more than fair and really didn't want to leave but we was cut for time.
