I miss when the Newbury Comics was by the Sears & had two floors. It's been a while since they…read moremoved from that location to the other side of the mall by the Target escalators and Lego store. Much smaller now, BUT much more organized and easy to find stuff. I have been on the hunt for sonny angel hippers and was elated to find them here yesterday! They are behind the counter at check out for $20/each, limit 4 per person. I originally decided to just buy two and we opened the blind boxes in the car. I was hoping to get a pink one, however, unfortunately did not hit. Now, it is 6 min before closing and we figured, what the heck? Why not go back to get two more hahaha. So, we rushed back into the mall (special thanks to the workers for letting us pick up two more, last min before close!) and bought two more. Anyways, I ended up getting one pink one and a blue mouse this time around! Total for 4 was ~$84. I love what I ended up getting though! Definitely a sucker for blind boxes from time to time, but it's so fun ;)

They have whole racks of manga books, pop funko bobbles (some exclusives etc) and a glass case of chase pops (not retail pricing) They have hobby merch, accessories, tee shirts, music, tidbits all about. Glad they still surviving and offering products to the south shore! The store employees are attentive if you need help, they folks i used to know there have since moved on but looks like the store is run well still!

The owner Kevin is there a lot of the time and he's super knowledgeable about movie options. First, the cafe aspect. Excellent coffees and homemade tea blends. They also offer monthly specials (on the chalkboard outside) that are often really tasty. Kevin is also a great baker and makes all their treats from scratch onsite. The cheddar jalapeño scone is our favorite but everything we've ordered is consistently good and there's a variety every time we visit. Next, the movie rental aspect. Basically it's your friendly neighborhood Netflix back when Netflix was mailing DVDs to people. $20/month for unlimited rentals, no more than 2 out at a time, and Kevin is quick to buy new movies as soon as they're available. They also have a mini private theater you can rent out for events like birthdays or to watch events like the Oscar's or Super Bowl. I haven't used that yet but it's cool to know it's there. Great neighborhood staple and one of those little businesses that makes you feel glad to live in a city. Strongly recommend!

Not only is the coffee delicious, but it's so reasonably priced, which is such a rarity these days. They also have a microcinema where they hold screening events. Super happy to have a spot like this in the neighborhood!

But for the most part, they recognize that a solid browse is usually needed before you'll be ready to check out up front. I admit, once I find my books I always (always!) take a right turn before checkout to do a solid walk-thru of the papers, calendars, binders, candy- everything yu need to have cool, pretty things on your desk or bookcase. And theyy get me every time. I ike that you can put a book aside to pick up and pay in store. Some times I'm not 100% sure that I'm buying the book I want, so it's handy to not have to pre-pay for a pickup. The selections on the tables up front are usually fairly interesting - mysteries, current releases, popular titles. There's always something there that I haven't read, or a great gift idea. Yep, people still like to give and get real paper books! While I keep a dozen or so ready-loaded on my Kindle, my first love are books that stay with you and I'm always gifting one to someone who I know still reads, or is learning to read, or doesn't know that they need to READ A DAMN BOOK! Because I'm only there to help! Go. Listen to a story time. Attend an author event. Or get a Starbucks at the counter and grab a table. There are many worse ways to spend some time quieting your mind.

I think the plaza itself has a lot going for it and this Barnes & Noble is a key piece to that. A…read morelegend of the local music scene (he actually was awarded a Boston music award), he's sold "black music" of myriad styles in the area for 40+ years. The man is generally pretty agreeable (not that easy with so much experience in retail!) and taking the time to talk to Skippy is well worth it--- he's a fount of information, and can remember label and release information far better than you could imagine. And he LOVES to talk food. If you spend enough time in the shop, you'll realize that it has a strong community aspect to it; regulars are popping in all the time and Skippy's ties to Boston's African-American community are substantial. He also does a weekly radio show called the Time Tunnel. Oh yeah, the music. A great spot for records, though they are very slowly getting into order. This is a great place for soul and blues oldies, as if Skippy doesn't have it on CD, he'll order it for you. He also sells a lot of gospel and modern Southern soul, and stocks some jazz. I recommend it more for CDs unless you like to dig a lot. But the counter is often the place to be, as Skippy can usually tell you if he's got what you're looking for.

Very distinct collection of records, mostly "black" music, a lot of soul, funk, motown, disco, hip hop records. There doesn't seem to be much of anything else, but to a lot of diggers, this can be a goldmine if that's what you like. The man, Skippy, is a gentleman, and he knows his stuff. He was willing to work with me on the price, which was very fair. I bought a stack of about 15-20 records for around $60. He's got lots of unique and some rare 45's of old soul music. I really enjoyed it.
