Great little vintage store with lots of colorful and patterned clothes. There aren't that many racks but the clothes are specially selected so there's lots of cool stuff. There's also vintage games, cameras, records, and more, so lots of chances to find something right for you. For all the specialty stuff they have I expected higher prices--it's not goodwill cheap, but it also doesn't have the usual vintage finders fee. Staff is super friendly and helpful. After a few years of shopping at the SoWa vintage market and the Davis Flea, it's awesome to see High Energy (formerly DiscoVision) get a brick and mortar store and still retain that "attic-fresh" feel that made them exciting to visit in the first place. The store is a bit out of normal travel distance; a few blocks out from Teele square, and a 15 minute walk from Davis, but it's worth the trip if you're looking for vintage video games at a reasonable price. There's a few miscellaneous cartridges for lesser systems available (Nice to see some Intellivision after all these years!), but mostly games for NES, GEN, SNES, and N64. They're behind cases, but all with visible labels so you can see everything. Most are cart-only(save for quite a few of those built-to-last plastic Genesis cases), so it's not exactly a collector shop, but if you're looking for games to play, the store does well for quality franchises and hidden gems. Many of the available games also fall under the store's "5 for $20" guidelines, and not just budget and sports titles. If you own multiple systems, odds are good that you can fashion a high quality mix & match bundle to your liking every time. The owner's a great guy as well. He's friendly, knows his stuff for the games he sells, doesn't actively try to match inflated ebay prices, and one thing I really appreciate is that he inventories his stock online, so you can go in with a few titles in mind, and even reserve them beforehand. High Energy sells a few other things besides video games (VHS tapes, records, clothing, handbags, etc.), although I can't properly evaluate them. I estimate the handbags can fit an average of 4-6 cartridges, if that helps. read more

This place is beyond awesome and brings forth all your old school video game needs, plus much more. Tucked away in Teele Square, which is a stones throw from Davis, sits DiscoVision Vintage. This store has not only copious amounts of old school games, ranging from SNES, N64, Genesis, NES AND Atari, but provides a great selection of records and vintage clothing. They recently opened a this store, having moved their booth of wonderful wares from the Soho Market in South Boston, to the Cambridge area. The staff is friendly, knowledgeable about their products and provide a nice cozy atmosphere for your shopping experience. Again, one cannot truly describe the range of old school video games this place has, as well as old school systems and refurbished items. They also have a small area to test out the game you want to buy, therefore getting a better sense of the product. It is a truly a fun place to hang and check out, whether you need to find that great pair of leather boots and jacket, or just want to spend an afternoon with treasures from your childhood. When I saw these guys didn't have any reviews I knew I had to write one. I'm not exaggerating when I say that these guys are THE place for all of your vintage gaming needs. I originally stopped at the shop while at SoWa (http://www.sowaopenmarket.com/) last year and immediately knew I would be back. I was currently in the market for an NES, and their deal (Original Nintendo with new 72 Pin connector, 2 Controllers, and 5 Regularly Priced Games for only $60) was way too good to pass up. Armed with my "new" game system and the works (even Duck Hunt and a Zapper!) I went happily on my way. They were super personable the entire time, and even offered me a drink on my way out, which was delicious. Now that might sound like a lot of praise, but I am not even close to done. A little while after I got my NES home I noticed some sound issues with the console. Remembering that I was given a 30 day warranty, I contacted them, was told it was not a problem, and headed back to the shop. When I got there they were super apologetic, immediately replaced the NES for me, and even gave me a copy of Excitebike for my troubles! I have since purchased quite a few more games from the booth, all at great prices that you won't find anywhere else (even eBay). My girlfriend had also purchased an SNES there for me for Christmas, and had nothing but nice things to say about her experience; and she has no knowledge of vintage games whatsoever. The last things that I wanted to mention is the great selections (all the way from Atari 2600 to Nintendo 64), the fact that they'll keep an eye out if there are specific games/accessories you're looking for, and that their new display case looks really slick. I haven't spent a lot of time looking through their other stuff (the games are far too distracting for me), but they definitely have a good selection of vinyls, vintage clothes, and other awesome old stuff as well. Always friendly and always professional, you're doing yourself a disservice if you're not shopping here. read more

I had my doubts about this place-- even after seeing how high most yelpers ranked it--because no one had ever mentioned this place to me and if it weren't for yelp, I don't know how long it would've taken me to discover it. However, all of my doubts went completely unjustified once I made the journey there. The location is a tad bit in the middle of nowhere Somerville (at least to me) but this place is awesome! I went strictly in search of clothing--I don't do video games . :) Not only are the salespeople cool, laid back and friendly, the prices of unique, clean, intact vintage clothing makes this place worthy of visiting. When we saw this place opening up, my husband and I made a bet about whether it would stick around. He was doubtful that this little vintage shop could make in a rather dead area of Somerville. Wow. Seriously. Can't go without giving this place a 5 star rating. Also, this is my first review. I couldn't skip out on giving this place a review. This store has some of the greatest collections of old school video games. I went to buy two N64 controllers. Store owner, Wiley, said he needed to change the joystick to one of the controllers. I am a VERY patient guy. As he fumbled and dropped some of the pieces (no harm done, thankfully!) to the controller, I looked around at the collection of SNES, N64, NES, GameBoy, Atari, Sega Genesis, etc games. I spotted some TMNT card packs (contains 5 cards, 1 stick of gum, and one sticker) on the counter right in front of me. I couldn't miss out on that for 25¢ a pack. I said I would like to add 1 to the payment as well. Old controllers cost $20 each. I bought 2 for $40. Wiley was so generous after replacing the joystick (apologizing for taking so long, I said it wasn't a problem), he added a second TMNT package without asking me, just because he took too long. He only charged me for the controllers. Now that is excellent customer service!!!! Even though I was absolutely fine with waiting patiently, I wasn't even charged for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles packs. Wicked nice guy... Oh, did I mention you can play video games in the store if you want to? Awesome store. I hope this place stays around for a long time. I will DEFINITELY be back since, well, my apartment is only a little ways away. read more

This is the first Yelp review I've ever written. This place is that impressive. The customer service is top-notch, so much so that you don't want to give your business to any of their competitors. Additionally, the prices are far more reasonable. I should note is that the only drawback is that they don't have quite the selection of video games that certain other places have...however they seem to have a pretty steady circulation. Lastly, the owner (?) let me sell them a cartridge-damaged copy of Zelda: A Link to the Past. A couple other places told me they "couldn't take it", which is ridiculous as the game plays fine and just needs to be crazy glued to be just as good as any other copy. Anyways, High Energy Vintage is great...you should check 'em out! read more

I don't know why I didn't review this place before! Ever since I found out about this place, I've been going here all the time! The guy there is extremely friendly and is willing to help out any customers. There's also a really good selection of retro games here and they'll sometimes get in REALLY cool ones (they go fast though!) for great prices too! This certainly isn't the kind of store that overprices things like many retro game stores. And also they sell vinyl records, 70's/80's clothes, cassette tapes, and even sometimes good old Laserdisc's here! So if you like any of that stuff, then what are you waiting for? read more

All I can say is, this is my new favorite place to peruse for vintage games without emptying my wallet on ebay or other stores. The owner is VERY friendly and knowledgeable and his staff is friendly as well. I can't speak on the clothing because I'm not really into it, though I DO own SOME clothes as an unfortunate requirement of being in public places. The best thing about it is the games and I wish he would focus more on those unless of course he makes more on the clothing in which case I could understand. The selection is limited because things move FAST so you've got to come often and ask when they expect shipments in. Even the rare stuff is fairly priced unlike OTHER places that try to scam you because its rare**cough**won't mention names**cough**. read more
