Back to this place after last review 9 months ago. Still ridiculous size chicken fried steak fingers. Comes with salad, 2 sides (M potatoes, okra) and roll. I'm always expected to be let down because it is soooo good every time coke here. Everything is still great. Talked my friend into meeting here and he was blown away with how great it was. I forgot to take a picture this time. My friend is not a leftover person, but he took his leftover steak fingers with him and also ordered slice of buttermilk pie to go. Our waitress was a sweetheart. I forgot her name, believe short young lady with black hair. Forgive me for not remembering her name, but she was wonderful and very helpful for any questions my friend had. Did notice someone ordered I believe cheese curds and did not know they had these. I will try to remember this next time I'm here. I will always update this place every-time I come here. Thanks for the greasy food. read more

I travel to Abilene somewhat often for business, in and out same day. I'm usually coming through the area of this restaurant in the morning, and back by again around lunchtime. And I usually stop at the place across the highway. Today I decided to check out New York Hill and I was glad I did. The ambience is like being in a house that had its living room converted to a dining room- which it may very well have been. I'm not sure. Regardless, there are booths and tables, and a nice view to the north. All good. I was greeted by a nice young lady who took my drink order (coffee) and brought a menu. I liked they served the coffee in a thermal mug as it stayed hot! The menu was extensive, plate lunches, burgers, sandwiches, salads... a bit of everything. The dishes were typical of what we call "home cooking" around these parts. I ordered the Texas Sizzler- a chop steak with onions and jalapeños, smothered in melted cheese. It was quite delicious, and since we just had our first cold snap for the fall, it really hit the spot as a dish that will warm you up. The salad that came with the meal was very good, and had a nice chunky blue cheese dressing. Crinkle cut sweet potato's fries were good, as was the pinto beans. There are lots of other sides to choose from. Overall, everything was hot, fresh and delicious. Service was friendly and they. Checked on me often. Bottom line is I will be back to try some of their other offerings. read more

The restaurant has a quaint old country vibe filled mostly with families, couples, & working groups. The service was great. They young waitresses were very polite with a kind & friendly attitude. The complimentary rolls were some of the best we've ever had. We had to ask for more. They were so soft & warm, true perfection. The fried jalapeños were perfectly breaded & the fried cheese curds were some of the best I've had, not rubbery. For entrees we had the Texas sizzler, the chopped sirloin, & fried chicken steak. What a view & wonderful food & service. We were driving back to Dfw and have always wanted to stop and try New York Hill restaurant. I'm glad we did as this was a delicious home cooking restaurant with a great view. I had the chicken fried steak, green beans and mashed potatoes. All very classic cooking and delicious. We stopped here for lunch on our road trip and enjoyed the scenery of this beautiful country side restaurant. They had hummingbird feeders so we got to see some hummingbirds. This is a nice setup for a pit stop. I will say I was surprised by all the people that are local and visiting after lunch that it stays busy here so we knew it was going to be a good place. I did get a salad, chicken fried steak with gravy and peaches. It was good. I could tell the steak fries and chicken fried steak were homemade so that's a bonus. We enjoyed our time here. read more

We stop here every time we go to Dallas. Today I tried the small gizzard dinner, came with salad and 2 sides. I love their ranch, it tastes homemade. Gizzards were plenty!!! Nice and crisp on the outside soft on the inside. Pinto beans were like I make. So yummy!!! Hubby had the chicken fried steak sandwich. It was huge, but he ate every bite along with their home fries. Neat place up on the hill. The options out here are very limited, so this was a nice find, being recommended by another, I stopped in since my work has me doing a project out in this area. It's an older building, tho seems well kept. The furniture I can say could use some TLC. The table I was at was wobbly and not from uneven legs, the table top was itself was loose. Entering, you seat yourself, then they come to you. It was busy during lunch and they didn't have any seating for singles and only a few spots taken for doubles, all tables were either 4 or 6 man seating, only option for me at the time was the 6 man, for little ole me. I had the chicken livers, okra, and mashed potatoes. The plate comes in small or large, and the small that I got was plenty big for two people. Flavor was good, okra was fired and really good. The price compared to other spots in the area was MUCH less expensive, which was nice. Very homey and country feel and atmosphere. I'm certain I will return. read more

Finally came to eat at the New York Hill after moving to the area.. the green salsa was very good!! The perfect amount of heat and good flavor.. my entree was the texas sizzler.. basically a hamburger steak stuffed with onions and jalepenos.. they use pickled jalepenos which in my opinion doesn't give this dish any justice.. skip the texas sizzler and go for the steak or chicken fried steak. We planned a stop for lunch on a road trip to Las Colinas for a company Christmas Party. We have stopped here for years, this time we had a small chicken fried steak and a hamburger steak both with mashed potatoes and green beans. Our drinks arrived quickly as did our side salads. The cafe has a nice view of the Smoke stack across the highway and a very nice interior, it's definitely homey. The wait staff have always been nice and friendly. Too. A favorite memory was when the kids were young and we stopped for dinner. It had been snowing that day so there was a nice blanket of snow on the ground. After dinner we had to let the dogs out of the minivan for a walk so the kids enjoyed walking them in the snow down the hill. The dogs did their business and walked around in the snow a bit before dragging the kids back to the warm minivan! Absolutely fabulous little place!! Super neat history too! Plenty of parking for big rvs or trucks on parking lot. All of the waitress were very attentive..and the rolls! Oh my the soft warm yummy rolls that they have honey on the table for were to die for!!! I had the homemade chicken tenders with huge steak fries, side salad and pinto beans!! We've had this on our "list" for a long time. Even passed it leaving Fort Worth for our weekend getaway. I was hoping they were open Sundays and got excited when we pulled into the parking lot. I can say the earlier is the better. We got there at 5 and by 6 and it started getting busier. Our waitress and the rear of the staff was so friendly. Almost like they knew us for years. Quite the opposite of the "other" chicken fried steak place across the highway. Don't forget to enjoy their homemade rolls with the butter. They also leave a bottle of honey on the table to drizzle over that roll. Yummmm I chose the chicken livers, mashed potatoes and green beans. Our waitress even said if I didn't like them she'd bring me something else. That's amazing customer service but wasn't needed. They tasted scrumptious! The masked potatoes were good as well as the green beans. My wife decided on the chicken trips. Wow! Juicy and incredible crunch on the outside. I stole a piece of one but couldn't manage to get anymore chicken from her. If you are close this is the place to come AND not expensive either. They welcome you when you walk in. Lots of seating. The dinner rolls that we were given with our tea were warm and delicious. My husband and I both got the catfish special. Lots of food on the small and large platter. The catfish strips were fresh and light. The coleslaw was cold and refreshing. The potato caught me off guard due the way the potatoes were cut. But.... They are great!!! We also had pinto beans that tasted like it belonged in a contest and it was the winner. Our meal came with homemade warm brownies that were deliciously amazing! This type of restaurant is t a number one choice of mine but when traveling with my 90 y/o mom it's a go to for her when we head to visit family in West Texas. Warm, soft, and layered baked roils, homemade tasting meals, and thoughtful and professional service. And a Yelp check in still gets you a free slice of buttermilk pie! Seven years ago, the lunch special was $8.95. Today, it's $13. Inflation spares no one. Glenda had breakfast for lunch. I snagged a piece of her thick crispy bacon, but she didn't share the biscuits and jelly! New York Hill is a great place to take a break as you're speeding down Interstate 20. We were traveling through Mingus on our way to Dallas and decided to stop in and try it out. Atmosphere: VERY roomy restaurant for such a small town. Place could definitely host a wedding or other large group. Big booths and diner style tables that can easily be moved around. 1 Star Service: We were greeted and seated as soon as we walked in. Our waitress was prompt to our table and never left us wanting. Very cordial and helpful with the menu. The menu has quite a few items and they have some specials as well. 2 Stars Food: Everything we got was good. We started with some chips and salsa and some corn fritters. Chips and Salsa were fresh and quite good. The corn fritters were FANTASTIC! And there was more than we could possibly eat for just two of us. Would definitely be a shareable for a table of four. We were also given some homemade rolls with an amazing whipped butter. These were top-notch and went well with our side salads. For entrees I got the large chicken fried steak (mistake) and the wife got the lemon butter grilled shrimp. I say it was a mistake because it is platter sized. Could feed 3 normal people easily or two high school boys! I would say that it was average in flavor and the gravy could have used some more salt and pepper but it was still decent. The okra and the mashed potatoes however were top notch. Now on to the wife's shrimp. WOW!!! If you go here, and you decide you want something a little more filling than shrimp, then by all means order an extra meal of these to share at the table. These were smoky, lemony, charred perfectly, and simply amazing. I couldn't stop stealing them from my wife. Trust me when I say you would be missing the best item on the menu if you didn't get these. 1.5 Stars Overall: This is a great little stop off of I-20. Every year or two when I drive, I 20 and I passed by this restaurant I stopped and enjoyed lunch or dinner. Today I had chicken fried steak and mashed potatoes. It was very good as usual. when you enter you immediately appreciate the decorations and know that you're in a comfort food restaurant the staff is very friendly watch for the signs along the highway. What a pleasant detour. I've been on this hi-way many, many times but only stopped at the smokestack once. The food fills you up. The hot sauce is hawtttt and the people or more than friendly here. Was nice sitting porch side while seeing the humming birds and crushing a burger. In my pics you will see the "small" chicken fried steak. It is not small y'all haha as you can see. Good home grown salad and the burger comes with fries. I don't like steak fries so for the double burger I would give a B- for overcooked but that's my fault for not saying medium. I'm used to being asked how I want the burger.
