It's home cooked food, calories-not-monitored, but worth every single bite. It doesn't look like much from the outside, but I knew it was going to be good when we saw the parking lot was overflowing into the grass. Luckily there was still an open table inside and we were welcomed by the sweetest staff and our waitress was just as wonderful. So many things looked good on the menu, but I couldn't resist ending this road trip with another taste of chicken fried steak to compare to Mary's (and they can definitely compete because it was AWESOME)! We also tried the chicken fried chicken (delicious), sweet potato casserole (amazing), Mae's potato casserole (tasty), cheese sticks (good), and the hamburger and fries which was obviously delicious enough that my picky daughter almost finished it - which says a LOT! We were very glad that we'd ordered the "smaller portions" for lunch because it meant we could grab a few of the desserts to go to snack on for our final leg of the road trip and keep enjoying at home. We tried the toffee cake (incredible), peanut butter cake (sinfully good), and the coconut pie (very light and creamy)! We also snagged some items to take home with us from their coolers and I can 100% recommend their pork tamales and summer sausage. If you get the chance to stop here, you won't regret it at all! The place is just an old diner in the town of Strawn. We showed up at 1130. They had nice crowd no wait. Sit down and order. We got a small and a medium chicken fried steak. For the sides fries and mash potatoes with a small salad each. The small steak is prefect size for me. But if you are hungry go for medium or the large. The chicken fried steak is made a little different than most. Not the usual type of breading. We really enjoyed the meal all was very good. The steak was tender and great flavor. Fries cook perfect and great for dipping into my gravy. Mary came around and took the order and she also went to each table and made sure you like the food. Very good service from all the staff. Unfortunately, I was underwhelmed. It was over promised and under delivered. Some of my opinions may be due to us trying at an off hour (2:00 PM lunch). But it was during regular hours. We were waited on by Mary (who this place is named after). I don't know if she regularly works as a waitress or if she had people not show up for work. Anyway, she seemed extremely busy with no time to chat. We came here to try the best CFS in the state, so we didn't really need a menu. However, the menu did surprise us with the CFS coming in 3 sizes - small, medium, or large. We ordered 1 small and 1 medium. The sides included baked potatoes, mashed potatoes, or French fries and also a small salad. The food came relatively quickly and was just as ordered. Unfortunately, our food was somewhere between cold and lukewarm. Additionally, my baked potato had been under a warmer so long that the potato was turning brown. The CFS was tasty and large. It just was not great. I prefer the CFS from Antlers in Spring Branch. The ambiance is as small town diner. They did that perfectly. They had a lot of pictures from high school sports. They also had some pictures from the folks from the TV series Landman that shot some scenes here. Will I return? Probably not. The food was good, but not near as good as I expected.
