I've driven past The SmokeStack restaurant for many years but have never stopped. Today was different! My wife and I stopped and had dinner and it was very good! Our waitress was just the best! My wife had the fried okra and macaroni and cheese and I couldn't decide what I wanted. It all look and sounded so good! I gave the waitress 3 of my choices and she took it from there. She didn't tell me what she had ordered for me until they delivered our food. I had the mushroom Swiss cheese burger with homemade onion rings! It was so good!! They make their own buns (fresh!!!!!) and to me make a good burger Great! To top it off, we split a piece of buttermilk pie. Our waitress even warmed it up. I like the feeling you get when you walk in, so many things to see and reminisce. When you leave, check out the old bricks your walking on, they were made there in Thurber. When you see the SmokeStack, pull off I20 and get you a good meal. Go get Full

Wanted something unique to stop at on our road trip and found this cute place easily off i20. Tons of parking so definitely trailer friendly. The building is older and really cute. It was lunch time and you could tell there were a lot of local regulars. The menu has so many options. I had the meatloaf sandwich and it was HUGE. I halfed the slice of meatloaf so I could actually fit it in my mouth. I chose it over the usual meatloaf because of the Texas toast. It was really good but likely would opt for the plain meatloaf and not the sandwich next time. The sweet potato fries were crispy and definitely a favorite in our group. One of us got the chicken pot pie special and it came with the chocolate cake dessert. While kind of simple, she said the potpie was pretty good. While we were there hey had a short power outage which no one seem very concerned about. Luckily it came back on after a couple of minutes. Our service was just so so but since the power outage happened I imagine there were some other issues going on. Definitely a cool little spot to stop!

We had two choices in this small town of Thurber, so we picked this one because of its proximity to a landmark. This place was hoppin,g so you know that's a good sign. They actually had gluten-free bun,s and the burger was super juicy and thick. I have no real complaints. The bathrooms were small but clean. Parking was easy, and the staff were friendly.

My first visit after driving by this place several times over the last 30 years. It was early in the day, and I wasn't sure they would be serving breakfast based on what I had seen online, but was pleasantly surprised! The place is one of the original brick buildings from this old townsite. It's quite homey, lots of photos from the heydays of this area. Service was friendly and efficient. The menu had lots of choices for breakfast, and I chose the Brick Rustler, as it covered a lot of bases with eggs, bacon, sausage, 2 biscuits, gravy, has browns and pancakes! And all that for $19.95! I was able to eat all but the pancake and a biscuit, which I took to go. I don't get out here much but I'll stop when I can.

Viktoria was very attentive and engaging. She knew a lot about the menu and made the amazing ranch dressing! The Smokestack is an enjoyable restaurant with inside seating and a large patio area as well. The daily specials are super affordable and come with desert. I enjoyed the fried chicken salad with their home made dressings. Their burgers are the perfect consistency, with a good crust and not greasy, with a great flavor.

French toast. My sister was so eager to get a bite she cut into it before I was able to get my picture.

Took my sister for a birthday breakfast to The Smokestack yesterday. My sister was thrilled. The food was tasty and had good sized servings. My sister had the mushroom and swiss omelet which came with a side of biscuits and gravy. I had the breakfast burrito. The salsa on the side was quite tasty and I don't fund that to be the case with most restaurant salsas. We, also, ordered a single slice of French toast for a breakfast dessert. The service was nice and everyone was pleasant to deal with. One of the things I appreciated most was there was no music we had to yell over and there was only one television in the restaurant which is not typical in most places. We'll definitely be back.

If you're in the area and even if you're not it's worth the stop! My friend and I are visiting a friend from High School and she suggested this place. They were packed, but thankfully they had a table open. I had the Bacon Chicken Sandwich and it was phenomenal! The fries were delicious as well. I really enjoyed the sourdough bun My friends had a cheese burger and the black bean burger and both enjoyed them. The fried pickles are spears, which imo are far better than the pickle chips anyways those were great too. Our waitress, Pooh, was so sweet and attentive. We never needed drinks. She was very friendly - I'd highly recommend asking for her The ambiance was great it was all decked out with the old timey mine stuff.

Found three restaurants in the area with good ratings. So of course had to try them all. At the Smokestack I had the jalapeño potato poppers with ranch dressing. Very good and the service was completely on point. It is a beautiful building with lots of history. Worth the stop.

DELICIOUS! I actually heard about this place from a Reddit post about places to stop on a road trip…read moreacross Texas and I'm so glad I listened! It's home cooked food, calories-not-monitored, but worth every single bite. It doesn't look like much from the outside, but I knew it was going to be good when we saw the parking lot was overflowing into the grass. Luckily there was still an open table inside and we were welcomed by the sweetest staff and our waitress was just as wonderful. So many things looked good on the menu, but I couldn't resist ending this road trip with another taste of chicken fried steak to compare to Mary's (and they can definitely compete because it was AWESOME)! We also tried the chicken fried chicken (delicious), sweet potato casserole (amazing), Mae's potato casserole (tasty), cheese sticks (good), and the hamburger and fries which was obviously delicious enough that my picky daughter almost finished it - which says a LOT! We were very glad that we'd ordered the "smaller portions" for lunch because it meant we could grab a few of the desserts to go to snack on for our final leg of the road trip and keep enjoying at home. We tried the toffee cake (incredible), peanut butter cake (sinfully good), and the coconut pie (very light and creamy)! We also snagged some items to take home with us from their coolers and I can 100% recommend their pork tamales and summer sausage. If you get the chance to stop here, you won't regret it at all! Delicious, great service, and good portions!

The waitress was very friendly, but spread a little thin through all the tables. Menu had something for everyone. We ordered the special, smothered chicken, and it was not special. The shredded cheese they balled on there was barely melted. We ordered a plain burger for my son. The patty was thin and over cooked and bun a little over toasted. I ordered the Philly steak fries and they were good and I would order again. We travel through this area and were hoping it would be a place to eat and rest, but not sure we will make it a priority

Great chicken fried steak at Mary' Café. We watch the show The Daytripper with Chet Garner on TV…read more He did a segment on Mary's Cafe. So, we drove about 2 hours west of Fort Worth. The place is just an old diner in the town of Strawn. We showed up at 1130. They had nice crowd no wait. Sit down and order. We got a small and a medium chicken fried steak. For the sides fries and mash potatoes with a small salad each. The small steak is prefect size for me. But if you are hungry go for medium or the large. The chicken fried steak is made a little different than most. Not the usual type of breading. We really enjoyed the meal all was very good. The steak was tender and great flavor. Fries cook perfect and great for dipping into my gravy. Mary came around and took the order and she also went to each table and made sure you like the food. Very good service from all the staff. I'm really surprised at how many four and five stars there are. Almost nothing we got had flavor: Queso - literally just cheese with nothing added - no salsa, no jalapeños, no onion - nothing. If you put queso on the menu, I think people expect it to have more than literally melted cheese. Chicken Fried Steak - loved that the breaded parts stuck to the meat and was excited to eat, but again, literally no flavor. We didn't finish it and we didn't take the leftovers. Mashed potatoes - No flavor AGAIN. We were so surprised and disappointed. You can see everyone there busting their tails though. Those women deserve every penny of every tip left for them.

Me and my boyfriend both ordered that so it should've came to about 20-23$. Tell me why even though I asked her MULTIPLE times if it was part of the special, because 1) she said "it comes with two sides" 2) asked if I wanted on or two scoops of ice cream and 3) I told her the food item was too big to be the special and she COMFIRMED it was, I was charged FOURTY NINE DOLLARS?!?! Are you kidding me? She charged us for the regular meal which is 15.99 a piece plus our drinks plus desserts. And when I asked the manager for a refund she said the best she can do is 10% off because we already ate it. YEAH I ATE THE FOOD I ASKED FOR! THE SPECIAL! YOUR WAITRESS CONFIRMED IT WAS THE SPECIAL I ORDERED FROM THE LITTLE MENU! Why should I be charged for HER mistake? You obviously don't care about your regular customers if you're only gonna offer 10% off a 49$ meal that should've been 25$. Some of us are on a budget and have Little money to go out to eat with and you guys charge us like this? VERY disappointed will not be back for a while which sucks because I usually like this place. Just know if y'all go here you have to either speak very slowly for a couple of them to understand you want the special or put the small menu in their face to show them because even if you have your menu closed and you're point at the small menu some of them will still act like they didn't see, and they to blame you so they don't get in trouble.
