The daily special was chicken fried steak and mashed potatoes with gravy, green beans a dinner roll. We both had that. The food was amazing. Hot, fresh and delicious. Way to much for us the eat it all so we brought some home for tomorrow. The service was fast and friendly . Oh I forgot to mention that the special came with peach cobbler. The ambience is hard to beat in this old time building just off of the highway. The food is really good, but the service is absolutely some of the best. I've driven past The SmokeStack restaurant for many years but have never stopped. Today was different! My wife and I stopped and had dinner and it was very good! Our waitress was just the best! My wife had the fried okra and macaroni and cheese and I couldn't decide what I wanted. It all look and sounded so good! I gave the waitress 3 of my choices and she took it from there. She didn't tell me what she had ordered for me until they delivered our food. I had the mushroom Swiss cheese burger with homemade onion rings! It was so good!! They make their own buns (fresh!!!!!) and to me make a good burger Great! To top it off, we split a piece of buttermilk pie. Our waitress even warmed it up. Stopped here to check out their chicken fried steak. The steak was good, the salad was plentiful and the onion rings were excellent. The only complaint i have is that in addition to the 3% credit card fee (I know, everyone is charging this now), the amount on my credit card bill was more than our receipt. It appears that maybe they gave themselves more tip than what we wrote on our copy of our receipt. This happened to us once before at another restaurant so compare your receipts to your bill. Wanted something unique to stop at on our road trip and found this cute place easily off i20. Tons of parking so definitely trailer friendly. The building is older and really cute. It was lunch time and you could tell there were a lot of local regulars. The menu has so many options. I had the meatloaf sandwich and it was HUGE. I halfed the slice of meatloaf so I could actually fit it in my mouth. I chose it over the usual meatloaf because of the Texas toast. It was really good but likely would opt for the plain meatloaf and not the sandwich next time. The sweet potato fries were crispy and definitely a favorite in our group. One of us got the chicken pot pie special and it came with the chocolate cake dessert. While kind of simple, she said the potpie was pretty good. While we were there hey had a short power outage which no one seem very concerned about. Luckily it came back on after a couple of minutes. We had two choices in this small town of Thurber, so we picked this one because of its proximity to a landmark. This place was hoppin,g so you know that's a good sign. My first visit after driving by this place several times over the last 30 years. It was early in the day, and I wasn't sure they would be serving breakfast based on what I had seen online, but was pleasantly surprised! The place is one of the original brick buildings from this old townsite. It's quite homey, lots of photos from the heydays of this area. Service was friendly and efficient. The menu had lots of choices for breakfast, and I chose the Brick Rustler, as it covered a lot of bases with eggs, bacon, sausage, 2 biscuits, gravy, has browns and pancakes! And all that for $19.95! I was able to eat all but the pancake and a biscuit, which I took to go. I don't get out here much but I'll stop when I can. read more

We really enjoyed our lunch at the Smokestack restaurant this weekend. The food was good (I got the fried chicken sandwich and onion rings and my companion got the jalapeño burger and fries). My chicken sandwich was big (could have used a tiny bit more seasoning) but everything else was perfect. My companion said that his burger was delicious. Our waitress was wonderful and checked on us often but not too often, if you know what I mean. They also have a lot of food choices to choose from. I can see a large group of people being happy coming here to eat and everyone finding something that they like. It was really cool to eat in a store that you know had been serving the public for almost 140 years. It is amazing that they are able to keep this facility operational, clean and be able to run a restaurant out of it. If you have never seen one, they have a player piano in this restaurant. By the way, the Gordon Museum nearby is really cool and only 5$. We also walked up to the Thurber cemetery after lunch (close the gate). Highly recommend as a day trip to get out of the "city." read more

Took my sister for a birthday breakfast to The Smokestack yesterday. My sister was thrilled. The food was tasty and had good sized servings. My sister had the mushroom and swiss omelet which came with a side of biscuits and gravy. I had the breakfast burrito. The salsa on the side was quite tasty and I don't fund that to be the case with most restaurant salsas. We, also, ordered a single slice of French toast for a breakfast dessert. The service was nice and everyone was pleasant to deal with. One of the things I appreciated most was there was no music we had to yell over and there was only one television in the restaurant which is not typical in most places. The waitress (I wish remembered her name) was so nice and always available whenever we needed something. We loved the history of the building and the wonderful things hanging on their walls. They were packed, but thankfully they had a table open. I had the Bacon Chicken Sandwich and it was phenomenal! The fries were delicious as well. If you like fried catfish, nobody does it better! They also make a mean apple cobbler! And the blackberry cobbler is the best you'll ever see. There are plenty of good old-fashioned country restaurants up and down interstate 20, but this is probably the number one. Service, atmosphere, noise level, it's all very nice. Ample parking and they have a very wide menu. By the way, I sometimes get liver and onions, absolutely delicious! But they're probably most famous for chicken fried steak. We've stopped here several times on our way to/from Dallas and have always enjoyed our meals. We usually get the Daily Special which includes dessert, usually a piece of some fruit cobbler. Then ordered loaded potato offered as a side. Then I ordered chocolate merengue pie when the delivered our meals . I didn't get the pie, I had to go stand behind customers paying for their meal before I asked the employee where's the pie. She said I'll bring it, theres 5 people in line to pay but the waitress finally brought it 15 minutes after zi ordered it. Then I got the bill, $16.95 for 6 small pieces of fried shrimp with a salad. $3.50 for the loaded baked potato. $4.50 for the pie that tasted terrible, it was very very dry and crumbled. We didn't even know this was a restaurant as we zoomed past. The reviews made us curious & excited, cuz driving thru Dallas made us hangry! I got the chx fried steak special (mash/black eyed peas, a side of fried okra & apple cobbler). My meat didn't have any flavor, other than the amazing breading & homemade gravy. Okra was delicious! Mash tators were definitely homemade, as well as the peas and roll, that, btw- melted in my mouth!! Hubby got a burger, but said the meat was bland. His fries were so good though! I did not care for the apple cobbler, but hubby boxed it for him later. I did order a piece of the coconut meringue pie to take home- & oooooooo yum I had to save half for today .... The steak fingers were awesome. I'd highly recommend them. I got the large serving size for the steak fingers. They were huge. Food was well worth the drive from Stephenville. I hadn't been there in a few years and wanted to treat my girlfriend to someplace different. She loves chicken fried steak and at this place, it's pretty good. Mine was mostly breading and very little meat which earned the 4 stars over the 5, but hers was the opposite, more meat, less breading. The sides were well portioned and the prices weren't as bad as they could have been. The pies are great! Had a slice of Apple and Buttermilk; both served warm. Yum!!! The SmokeShack Restaurant may look like an abandoned building from the frontage road of I-20 if you are just passing by, but once you get inside, it reminds you of the family diners of bygone days. The restaurant is located just south of the small North Texas town of Mingus, just off of I-20 where it is intersected by TX 108. It was built in the old Texas & Pacific Mercantile building when the original location at the old drugstore in Thurber burned down. We stopped by for breakfast on our way further west and ordered from the vast menu to start our trip off right. I had the Chicken Fried Pork Chop that comes with Eggs, Hash Browns and your choice of bread or biscuits. What shocked me initially was the amount of food for the cost. If you leave this place hungry, it is your fault. My pork chop was perfect, crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside with a good blend of seasoning and the eggs and hash browns were excellent as well. My son tried their Country Ham Steak and Eggs, with French Toast, Hash Browns and Eggs. I stole a bite of the ham and was seriously impressed. It had a sweet, salty flavor with just the perfect touch of smoke. One other dish I included in the images was their 'short' stack of pancakes that occupy the whole plate. They were fluffy, flavorful and way more food than expected. This place is a definite stop if you are traveling down I-20 and have a hankering for some real home cooking. They have daily specials, including a Homestyle Chicken Fried Steak that completely covers the plate for around $8.50 on Thursdays and Farm Raised Catfish on Fridays.
