Been on my to do list for years but was always hesitant because of the name. We Philadelphians have a perennial chip on our shoulder regarding all things New York but I have to say, it was one of the best pure tomato pies around

Pre-ordered bread for tomorrow.
Shelly V.

I purchased 2 slices of my usual tomato pie which is vegan, no garlic & no onions. I saw Pizzaz and got 2 slices for my son. To my surprise there were an assortment of pastries available ONLY on Sunday's. I went around 8:30AM. I purchased: *Chocolate Chip Muffin *Cherry Danish *Cheese Danish Along with the 4 huge pizza slices Total of $19 (Cash Only) cost effective. Other items available: Tea Biscuits, Kaiser rolls, small rolls, long rolls, etc. Great Service Items Baked on the premises. Also note: They cook Turkey's for Thanksgiving Small friendly neighborhood gem with friendly service.

Italian Bakery Tour - New York Bakery I've been baking for the last 3 years, since COVID began, and while I've had some successes, I haven't yet mastered two native Philadelphian baked goods - Hoagie (or "sub" or "grinder") Rolls and Tomato Pie, an Italian-American/Philly take on Sicily's Sfincione Palermitano. So, one day in April 2023, I partnered with my Yelp buddy, Gerald S., to traverse the Greater Philadelphia area, visiting five well-known and respected Italian bakeries, sampling those two things. I wanted to understand the nature of those breads, to understand their common traits - size and weight, density, crumb size; and, in the case of Tomato Pie, the sweet/acid/spice taste of its sauce. Of course, none of the bakeries that I visited would share their recipes, but I hoped to return to San Diego with a good idea of how to fiddle with recipes I have on hand, to make hoagie rolls and tomato pie similar to those I ate in Philly. NEW YORK BAKERY Owner Stephen Candeloro is a traditional baker, trained by his father and connected by family history to his bakery. What's more, though Gerald S. and I only spent 20 minutes with the man, enjoying an informative tour of his place, believe me when I say that Stephen is a personable, kind and amusing man, naturally dedicated to pleasing his customers. I'd bet all the money in my pocket that no one that meets him would say otherwise. Hoagie Rolls Stephen didn't hesitate to share the ingredients that he uses for his rolls: flour, water, salt and yeast, and no surprise there; taken together, those are the fundamental elements of bread. I found New York Bakery's hoagie rolls denser than others I sampled on my "tour," very much a traditional Italian loaf that I would use for table bread or in preparations such as garlic bread, French toast, bread pudding, etc. However, I wouldn't use them for sandwiches. Perhaps the hydration in his bread is lower than at other bakeries I tried, or the omission of sugar and oil prevent the light springiness I'd want in a sandwich roll. Anyway, it's good bread, and if you need something for the table when you're cooking a hearty Italian meal, New York Bakery is your place. The Numbers: The rolls were 11" long, 9" in circumference and weighed ~133g. A 4" midsection weighed ~61g. I estimate the density of the baked rolls at 0.14438 g/cm3. According to Stephen, they're baked at or slightly lower than 450F. Tomato Pie As we talked, Stephen moved around the bakery, loading, unloading and cutting slices of a brand-new, freshly cooked tomato pie, a round, personal one that he shared with us. Its crust had a gratifying snap to it, and the sauce, which was thinner than that used on slices I ate at other bakeries, had an herbaceousness that was quite nice. I liked the fresh slice better than the room-temperature one I bought on my way out. ******************** HIGHLY RECOMMENDED Sarcone's Bakery: https://tinyurl.com/3ssh9u3v Conshohocken Italian Bakery: https://tinyurl.com/4ffak98y RECOMMENDED New York Bakery: https://tinyurl.com/bdhtunz8 Cacia's Bakery: https://tinyurl.com/mw9yf6v8 NOT RECOMMENDED Corropolese Italian Bakery & Deli: https://tinyurl.com/26upuxdx .

New York Bakery on 11th Street in South Philadelphia, was the second stop on the bakery tour with Yelp Bro Omar S. His mission was to find the secret to baking great Philly Italian rolls and tomato pie that he could incorporate into his baking passions at home in San Diego. I tagged along as his driver and assistant in this adventure. I recommend you read his review in tandem with my own to attain the deeper appreciation of this effort. He has the hard facts and figures. I am more oriented toward the local color and enjoyment of the experience. Stephen Candeloro is the second generation owner and chief baker at New York Bakery. His father bought the business around 1940 from the founder of the business. He is still hard at work from early morning to mid-afternoon making the loaves, rolls and beautifully textured and crusty bread. He is also exceeding cordial and warmly welcoming to all who enter his domain with good intentions and curiosity. He came from the back of the shop to greet us when he heard his sister in law who runs the front of the house call him about two dudes who had questions for him. There he was, covered in flour dust, and his hair turned light gray from the giant dough mixer and ancient ovens, with pleasant greetings and his own sense of wondering what the hell we were after. Nonetheless, he showed us around - mixer, ovens and supplies of 50 lbs bags of industrial flour used in his operation. He even opened the door of the working oven to let us look within at the inferno and feel its fury on our faces. Then he really surprised us by pushing his 15' wooden pole into the other oven and lifting out a small round cheeseless pizza and placing it on a work table. Grabbing a small knife he quickly cut up the pie into several slices and offered them to us. Gingerly picking one piece up due to the temperature, I bit into a super crisp wedge. It was delightfully cracker-like on the undercarriage, with simple tomato sauce with minimal spicing on top. Loved it, and helped myself to a second. He was the only one to offer us a spontaneous taste of wares that day. That's me with my arm around his shoulders in the accompanying photos. I found his sandwich rolls to be very good, if a touch drier than Sarcone's. Regardless, they would make an excellent sleeve for any filling, hot or cold. I don't really fancy the standard cold Philadelphia tomato pies, so although I tried a thin slice of the thick sauced top and cold dough base, I found it more or less the same as all the others. Just not my cup of tea. Omar's review has more to say about that. To me, the visit to New York Bakery was the most fun and compelling of all the stops based on our interaction with Stephen and his obvious pride in his family business. He left a far stronger taste than any bread product I ate that day.

Delicious Tomato Pie.. I obviously could not wait till I got home!

This is a bakery I had seen before but never ventured Into until today. First off, it's a no frills, strait up bakery. The walk in is very small, with a counter. From the get go I could tell what the focus was. Rolls, and loaves. I must say, I was Impressed with the bread. I picked up two steak rolls, one being seeded and one plain. They were both fresh and had just the right amount of chewiness. Now, let me tell you something else. I'm not much of a tomato pie person but they had some fresh available so I decided to try a slice. I must say it was hands down the best tomato pie I ever had. After nine years of living in this city, I think I finally understand what all the excitement is for quality tomato pie. It should also be noted that the two ladies at the counter were very pleasant. This place is truly a gem. If you want solid bread that's reasonably priced, get in here.

The sponge bread is slightly sweet and very light and really quite wonderful. The barbecue pork bun and the pineapple bun were exactly as it should taste. No wonder those two are the best sellers. The egg tart is not too sweet, none of these breads are (aka high praise for any pastries ). Would definitely return! I thought the service was nice. If you know, you know. The pastries here are absolutely worth the detour--and honestly, wherever I see a Paris Baguette, I do pull over. That includes locations I've visited in Northern California, North Brunswick, New Jersey, Atlanta, Georgia, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and even the one here in Charlotte down in Pineville. It's a bit of a drive for me, but when I'm in that area, I always make a point to stop in and pick up a couple of their delicious croissant-donut pastries and marzipan or almond croissants. That's the beauty of this bakery--it's a chain, yes, but the consistency is what keeps me coming back. I have yet to be disappointed. Of course, I had to stop at this Hilton Head location--and I didn't come empty-handed. Food connects people, and bringing pastries to your host is always a winning move. I picked up three different varieties of their famous croissant-donut style pastries (similar to the well-known cronut): * Chocolate * Tiramisu * Mango And I added two large almond croissants that were beautifully filled, flaky, and indulgent. Everything looked fresh, full, and irresistible. The setup inside is easy and efficient. It's self-serve: you grab a tray, line it with parchment, use the tongs, and select whatever catches your eye--from baguettes to cakes to coffee drinks. Checkout was quick, Apple Pay was accepted, and the whole experience felt smooth and well organized. The space was clean, friendly, and inviting, with plenty of outdoor seating. Bottom line: Whenever you see a Paris Baguette on your radar, pull over. It's dependable, delicious, and perfect for picking up pastries to share--or to treat yourself. For me, it's one of those rare places that delivers the same quality every single time, no matter the city--and that kind of consistency is something I truly appreciate as a traveler and lifelong foodie.
