I've been stalking the streets of Philadelphia and the burbs for over 20 years looking for this place and it finally exists. As a one-woman show in the kitchen, availability of a specific item varies. But for someone looking for a nice place to hang out and read or study into the night (8PM! Coffeehouses that aren't just for chipper morning people who have their lives together by 4PM are too uncommon), the room is comfortable, the lemon square was the best I've had in my 54 years- not kidding, I have snarfed down a thousand lemon squares/bars and finally I have found the baker who understands the lemon curd should be a serious presence and not just a suggestion of lemon.
The hot chocolate was what sent me out-of-body though. Most Americans don't care much about the distinction between hot cocoa (made with cocoa powder) and hot chocolate (made with chocolate melted into milk), and for those that do, the chocolate version is usually prepared to the same consistency as the cocoa. No problem with that, everyone likes hot cocoa. France, Austria... much of continental Europe, hot chocolate is served as a smallish cup of molten lava, with that same viscosity, and is to be savored and feared, like fugu. People take their time in Parisian cafés because third-degree burns await the tongue that tries to rush through chocolat chaud. It's what they serve at Underbite Bites. The cup is sized for Americans, meaning if you are at all sensitive to caffeine, this dose of chocolate may be a problem.
My daughter had a very nice foccacia sandwich of mozzarella, arugula and pesto. The savory options vary daily, as does everything. Serious thumbs up here. (Btw, the business name refers to the owner/baker's dog, I asked.) read more
