Favorite Chinese food spot to date! Newly moved to the area and have been trying to find a Chinese takeout spot we like. We have tried quite a few places and really not impressed. Along came New Wok and it's all over. This is it and it's the closest one to us- double bonus! We have tried quite a few dishes but our favorite is the Lo Mein, spare ribs (so good), and General Tso's chicken. Everything is always fresh and flavorful.... without being too salty or greasy. New Wok is one of the few options for Chinese food in the area. This was our go to Chinese spa for quite a while and was never really that spectacular, but I feel like it has been declining a little bit and taste and quality. You have to be very specific on what you order here if you want it to be decent. They are fried foods like General sales chicken or sesame. Chicken is OK, it's a bit flavorless, but at least it's crispy. Beef and broccoli is very basic, and their other fried appetizers are a bit on the greasy side. Their fried rice is probably the worst I have had, it almost looks like white rice with vegetables in it. A lot of times we go for the hot and sour soup and a wonton soup for a cheaper dinner but honestly, the hot and sour soup is also one of the worst ones I've had. Even the crunchy noodles they give you are always stale. It is always disappointing unfortunately. It's not a whole lot better but oriental gourmet in Southbury is a better choice if you want to take a little drive. read more

I was down bad for some Chinese food and my post-cycling-power-test famished self felt gravitated towards New Wok. Knew it would be from first inspection: tables were being used for takeout materials rather than customers, the menu was sticky but not too sticky, and the woman in the kitchen was flipping her wok with much flare. Ordered the Szechuan dumplings (no Szechuan peppercorn in sight but still delicious) and flat rice noodles with beef. The beef was phenomenally tender and noodles were ripping hot straight off the wok, aromatic with that nostalgic wok-hei. My friend with a more elementary palate went for the orange chicken, which surpas-ed all expectations. We went for an early dinner. Because we had not had lunch, we were starving. This place is located in a shopping mall so there is plenty of parking. In fact, we've always gotten to park really close. Because we were so early, we were the only patrons and the waitress brought us to the front. It was cold, so I ordered wonton soup. My husband said he didn't want an appetizer or soup. They quickly served us nice hot jasmine tea, pickled vegetables and ice water. The soup was served quickly and smelled wonderful. I offered my husband a taste, but he said "no" and decided to order the scallion pancake, lol. Now I make wonton soup at home, so I have to say this was Wonderful wonton soup. You could taste they used roasted garlic and that the wontons were fresh. Yes, I thought they were a little light on the filling, but then this is an appetizer. My husband's scallion pancakes came out quickly too, and he finished them in a heartbeat. The entrees arrived shortly after and we dug in. I asked for mild spicy, and they delivered! Not too spicy, yet I could detect some spicy aftertaste. The chicken was nicely fried and the shrimp was sweet. It tasted almost like sweet & sour shrimp. There was so much, I could barely finish half the plate. My husband was able to eat more of his plate, but he did have to take about a quarter of his home. Normally that doesn't happen (he finished the Whole thing). And yes, he did like his very much. Unfortunately, I couldn't take a bite because his entree was Really spicy (the way he likes it). I thought the white rice was a bit undercooked, but that's my opinion. Overall, a good meal. As for service, I thought it was ok. I did have to call the young girl over a couple of times. But there was a waiter who took over after and refreshed our waters, albeit after we were done. We've been here a few times, and it seems like they are more of a take-out trade than sit down service. People were calling left and right and people were coming to pick up their order. When we left, another group had just been seated. So maybe service is a bit slow, but this is definitely worth the visit. The food is good and not more expensive than other places we've been (and we've been to A Lot of chinese food places). Literally the ONLY Chinese restaurant my family and I will eat at in our area. Have lived in a neighboring town to this restaurant for 10+ years and it took us forever to find New Wok. So glad we found it. It's the only place we have found that uses fresh ingredients, is never greasy, uses no MSG at all in anything (not even the soups!!), and is always consistently delicious. Large menu with so many options, and will cater to any dietary requests. Like myself, my parents are extremely picky when it comes to liking a quality Chinese Restaurant. First time ordering was really excited to try considering the positive reviews. The fried rice I ordered had a charred or grilled flavor. This was the freshest tasting Chinese food I've ever had. The sweet and sour chicken was fabulous! It wasn't greasy and the chicken tasted like real chicken. The sauce was very good and they were not stingy with it. The chicken lo-mein was just okay. The white rice was cooked perfectly and the Hot and Sour soup was yummy and flavorful. My review has very limited experience, but I plan to update after my next visit. They have boba tea!! I'm so happy to find somewhere with boba tea that isn't a 30+ minute drive. Staff was super friendly and place looked clean. I haven't tried the food yet, so that will be my next review. Prices look way better than competitors in town. Haven't visited in a while. We came in early on a Thursday evening and were the only people in the dining area...no green tea served this time. Two more customers entered to dine-in and the waiter sat them right next to us...so we got to hear a loud talker for our entire dining experience. Never understood why waiters decide to sit people on top of each other in a virtually empty dining area...pretty annoying. I ordered the Ginger Scallion Duck which was very good...tender pieces of duck and a flavorful sauce. Our son ordered Chicken & Broccoli in brown sauce which which was basically flavorless. The white rice was on the dry side (not sticky or moist). Our sodas were flavorless also, too much water added I suppose. New Wok has been consistently excellent since it opened. Veggies are fresh and bright and crisp, sauces aren't over- loaded with cornstarch, and the service is spot-on. We love their sesame chicken and pork lo mein, but we have never had anything bad there. They closed for a couple of weeks during the pandemic, but we are so happy to see them open again, especially after trying some other Chinese food places in the area. read more

A hidden gem in a non descript storefront tucked away in the Sand Hill Plaza. This was our first visit and will not be our last. My wife and I arrived on a cold Friday night and were promptly seated at a table for four. Tables are glass covered over green tablecloths. Pink napkins, decoratively folded, adorn the tables. Wine and beer are not served. The waiter encouraged us to bring in a bottle of wine from the liquor store located a few hundred feet down the strip mall. Upon my return, a few minutes later, glasses were promptly placed on the table. Awaiting was a complimentary small plate of marinated vegetables along with a pot of hot tea. Delicious! We both ordered egg rolls and the shrimp and chicken wok dish. The egg rolls were cooked perfectly, very tasty and non greasy, rare for a Chinese restaurant! The wok dish arrived, nice and hot, attractively served and cooked to perfection in a special sauce. More then enough for one meal and the extra was taken home for next day lunch. Complimentary pineapple slices completed our dinner. Many times I have eaten at an Asian restaurant and gone home with a raging thirst for water. Not so at New Wok. By the time we left, not only were take-out orders flying out the door but several patrons were dining in. New Wok must be doing something right! read more

The broccoli was very soft, which i do not like but, i'm sure they can cook it with a crunch if requested. Sesame chicken was white meat not just breading. This place is just OK. During lunch they give you a soup with your meal, which was delicious, but literally only about a half a cup of soup. Such a tease. I ordered the eggplant sauce with pork. Not too much flavor and for some reason they brought over a scoop of white and brown rice. I don't eat brown rice so it was lame how they bring it over without asking and specifying on the menu. If your in Newtown and want something a bit different then your average Chinese Mafia Menu, then give it a try. Don't expect much, because this place is just OK, not great. read more

Rather disappointed! My entree sea food bowl was so salty it had no decernable flavors other than salt. My daughter ordered orange beef and it hurt your jaw just trying to chew it. My husbands chicken and vegetables also had no decernable flavors the chicken was bland and pasty. Total waste of money. Their one redeeming item.... the egg roll. I'm not sure what has happened to new wok. Once a solid staple with dependable quality and fresh vegetables, for the past year, each time we get takeout it's consistently worse and worse. PURE OIL. The chicken and beef are heavily battered and batter is not fully cooked, slimy coated protein. Sauce is pure oil, no flavor. I'm concerned about the other reviewers commenting it's not greasy. Three of us had food there and our stomachs were immediately upset, most likely from the oil. They need to go back to their old ways. In the meantime, I'll drive to Monroe. read more

You have got to go to here if you are looking for the best Chinese food in Newtown. The service is very fast and the staff is very friendly. For the menu selection they have everything you want from a Chinese restaurant (from general tso to seafood and egg drop soup). The food you have to try is the Szechuan dumplings. They are made with fresh shrimp and pork in a delicious sauce. The prices are not that expensive either which is nice. Overall this is one of my favorite places to go in the area. read more
