Classic Chinese food in New Haven! Small family business with lovely owners. Adding to my monthly Chinese rotation!

I don't really know where to start. First of all, I ordered chicken and cashew nuts, which is a common dish at Chinese restaurants, and THIS is what I got and they charged me $15 for it. You've got to be kidding me. Fried chicken with....crystallized walnuts I guess? They could have just told me they don't have chicken and cashew nuts on their menu. Secondly, their teenage daughter is answering the phones and providing "customer service" and she couldn't care less about what she's doing and is extremely rude. I hate to criticize a kid but food is super expensive these days and if I'm going to get takeout it should be a better experience than this. The other food I got in the order was just okay. There are better Chinese places around here you could go to instead. read more

New Main Moon - Chicken and cashew nuts!!!??? - Chinese Near Me - Newtown, Connecticut

Classic Americanized Chinese food. Some good items, some bad. Here was my order: Chicken and broccoli. 8/10. Perfect amount of sauce, tender chicken, perfectly cooked broccoli (still crunchy.) Boneless spareribs. 7.5/10. Honestly, these are the most meaty boneless spareribs I've ever gotten. Usually you get those thin pieces, but these are thick. Only disappointment was I didn't think they had enough sauce on them. So I'll definitely ask for that next time. Steamed dumplings. 6/10. The dumplings themselves are good. A good amount of filling in them, but I just couldn't get into the sauce. It's not your typical savory sauce. This one is sweet, and it just threw off my experience of loving dumplings. Vegetable fried rice. 0/10. Would not recommend. With the disappointing amount of vegetables. (Onion, peas, bean, sprouts, broccoli, water, chestnuts, mushroom) this is by far the worst fried rice I've ever had. It's like an old stale tasting yellow Spanish rice that you get in the bag at the grocery store. I did order online, which is pretty convenient. Now I did go in July to pick up my food, but it was like 90° and so humid in the store. It's like they don't turn on the AC or it wasn't working. We just ordered 3 entrees, 3 appetizers and an order of fried rice. Well, let's just say I've had better. The fried vegetable rice was yellow and not fried. The General Taso chicken was to sweet. The dumplings had a funny flavor to it, they were not eaten at all. The others, boneless ribs were so so, egg rolls just ok. The food is ALWAYS consistent and delicious, however, sometimes I do need to ask for extra sauce on the orange chicken, but other than that their rice is perfect. Their lo mein is amazing and anything chicken is absolutely delicious. There's shrimp egg rolls. Need more shrimp but they're good. The service is fine. I have never eaten in the restaurant. We always order out but they're always very delightful to deal with and the food is always ready on time or early. The staff is also very respectful. Ambiance, I don't really know what to say about it because I don't in the restaurant. It is very bright in there. It's not loud so that's always a plus in my book. read more

Just moved in down the street so they are being tested. So far, after 3-4 visits... my impression is that many of the items are good and the service is almost on point but they get orders wrong on occasion and the quality is not the highest but the food is ready as timed and prices are tolerable. Got to sample more of the menu and I'll post back. They are so local and doing a good job so far. Never liked the Picture thing Chinese takeout places do. Looks dated and unappealing but I hate any pictures of food. They should have some tables or banquettes to eat in. Try them and decide for yourself! read more

I get takeout here periodically. I like the General Tso's chicken and the dumplings. They also have good Hot & Sour soup.

Ordered food for delivery on Christmas Eve. First there was no soy sauce with our meal. There was no option to request soy sauce . Not sure who develops the app the restaurant or Grub Hub. I would have preferred my meal with white rice but again there was no option to choose the type of rice or write it in special instructions. For an appetizer I ordered fried wonton and got crab rangoon. My meal was beef with mushroom it was good. My fiancé ordered garlic chicken he liked his meal. I was expecting your typical Chinese take out. I was expecting to pay a premium we're in Newtown, Conn. after all. In my experience ordering from a busy Chinese take out is a little like ordering from the soup nazi. I really don't have a lot to say except the lady taking my order got it wrong and left out the main course. Probably because of the other lines ringing loudly in the background. She also seemed aggravated by any questions pertaining to the menu. Maybe she needs a vacation. read more

Placed a large order the other evening and food was correctly packaged, efficient and hot. They loss points because most of the food was flavorless. We were surprised at how little flavor the food had. This was the consensus of all five of us. Since we had a large order they did give us a complimentary Wonton soup but sadly, that had little flavor also. read more

For basic good Chinese food that's affordable this place was great and tasty. The customer service was really good too.

New Main Moon is situated in a new development in the Hawleyville area of Newtown along side a few other new establishments including Al's Pizza. I get Chinese takeout only a few times per year, and already know of some of the "good" and "bad" in this area. Starting with the good - New Main Moon had your standard cookie cutter menu. Do they all order these from the same place? They also have a good number of other "special" dishes normally not found at Chinese takeout restaurants. Pad Thai was one. Another was a Singaporean dish. And to be honest I can't remember the others, their names weren't familiar. The portions were HUGE, very nicely packed in sturdy takeout containers (although for environmental reasons I'm definitely NOT a fan of plastic containers), and to be frank, all the food was very good. I'd say one notch better than most other takeout joints. Ok, onto the bad. When I entered, the restaurant was completely empty and the cooks were hanging out at a table 10 feet behind the counter eating some dinner. Granted it was like 10PM which explains why it was empty. Now, considering I was the only person standing at the counter, looking over the menu, discussing specials with one of the young cooks, you'd think the other employees sitting behind the counter would be doing all they can to project a positive image. We'll, I'm not sure what they were eating, it looked like some kind of Asian kabob (like satay chicken on a stick), but they were spitting pieces on the table, like how someone spits out watermelon seeds of their back porch. Not a good way to start, and maybe I should have spoke up or left... but hey, I gave it a try. The food was good, I now have some concerns about cleanliness. Will I be back? I can't say for sure, but I'll head to Jeffrey's Kitchen in Danbury first for sure. read more

My husband and I have tried this place twice. It is by far the least favorite of any Chinese place we have tried in the area. General Tso Chicken sauce tasted like BBQ sauce. The egg rolls are big but flavorless. The service is good and the staff is really nice but that isn't going to make me want to eat the food. It's a bummer because it is so convenient to where we live. read more

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the owner and his wife most sincerely for delivering the order to a school for a student in Washington, Connecticut, where is about 25 minutes drive. Prior, I called quite a few restaurants nearby, none of them was willing to deliver even with extra fee. The food is delicious and the kid is happy. This is your typical Chinese food spot. After traveling to this area often from nyc, it's nice to have a Chinese spot so close to home. They don't deliver, but their food makes up for it. It's not the best Chinese food of your life, but it is good food. I have 0 complaints. read more

We love having a great place for take out Chinese Food only a few minutes from our house. Our favorites are the Pork Fried Rice, Sesame Chicken, Lo Mein, and my wife says their Won ton Soup is the best she's ever had. Staff is very friendly, and service is quick! read more

One & done! Having driven by many,many times I said what the heck I'll give them a try....to start the place looks clean until you accidentally drop your phone on the ground & what do you see....an ant colony on the floor...it happens,its obviously a family business & I applaud that but when your 13 year old daughter runs the counter she should really take her eyes off her iPhone to atleast say hello or ask can she help you....I literally stood there a good 3 minutes while she cleared a level in candy crush....food was ok,kinda "hood" Chinese spot like,all the food tastes like it's cooked in the same oil & the same greasy wok....not what u expect for this area and the prices....I gave it 2 stars cause I actually ate my meal & they let you take you own soy sauce packets,some spots ration it like its the Great Depression....if your in that "hood" Chinese food mood with some extra cash or wanna stock up on duck sauce or need candy crush tips check this spot out,if you want a quality meal worth your money....go somewhere else! read more

This rating is for their Thai food, since I have never ordered any Chinese food there; however, I did order the Pad Thai. I was very happy to see that they offered Thai food and couldn't wait to bring it home and dig in. Unfortunately, it was not Pad Thai, it was lo mein with Thai-type, very thin noodles. How disappointing, the eggs, fish sauce and tamarind juice were missing, which Pad Thai should contain. I won't be back. read more

I eat food from new Main Moon frequently. The food tastes better than a number of the more formal chinese restaurants in the area and is definitely better priced . It is a joint so don't expect something fancy. But you know what? My experience is that joints have the best food. BTW, I find most restaurants in the greater Danbury area to be very mediocre, so if I say the food tastes good, I really mean it. read more

This place is a typical low-priced Chinese restaurant. I ordered take-out with my sister and we both enjoyed it. We accidentally ordered enough food for a family of four, but it was only about $20. Don't plan on sitting down there, they only have a couple of tables and the environs are not great. I'd never been to this part of Newtown--it seemed like a strange area for a restaurant--but there's actually some stuff back there (a pizza place too). read more

When this restaurant first opened I tried it and found it to be not worth returning to. So I tried it again recently and thought that it might have improved but no. I ordered Cashew Chicken and it tasted like leftovers from a day or two before. Watered down sauce. The egg roll was tasteless. I can't believe it is still in business. read more

We have had takeout from here about a dozen times. The food is mostly good, but not excellent. Sometimes the dishes with breaded chicken or a bit mushy. If you ask for changes to the ingredients in a dish they may or may not get it correct -- you should check before leaving. The prices are good. The place seems clean and it is convenient for where we live so we continue to eat here. read more

I just discovered this place when my power was out and I couldn't cook. It is really good food. I returned several days later even though my power was back on. They do a good business and the cooks run around at break-neck speed to give quick service. I would definitely recommend it. read more
