So I'll preface this with it was a last minute I'm craving sushi and noodles situation we asked a friend and they recommended. Overall things were pretty good, cute place with a friendly atmosphere and attentive staff which is always a big plus. Food was decent but not amazing and did the job of satisfying our cravings to a point. Chicken pad Thai for the table was a surprising favorite along with the shu mai and mei fun noodles (add spicy). The sushi rolls were good, not exceptionally great but good. All in all it was ok but I can not say it would be my first choice when looking for sushi next. read more

Just ordered take out one hibachi dinner and four sushi rolls for $80. (Which wouldn't be bad, if it wasn't so bad. This place used to have great sushi. It is not even as good as the grocery store sushi from the grocery store in the same shopping plaza. The fish/eel seemed less than fresh and in the shrimp tempura roll the tempuraed shrimp seemed like it had been sitting around at the bottom of a fry basket all day. Look I hate to see this place go down hill so much, but save your money. You'll be happy you did. The sushi scene in Newtown is beat. If you are really in the mood go spots in other towns. I am sad to leave a negative review as we have had many good meals here in the past. However, we had a bad experience recently. I called the restaurant first to see if they could make it right and they were rude, dismissive, defensive and offered nothing to make it right leaving me no choice but to leave a review here. First, my husbands eel sushi was bad, he had to spit it out. We've had it many times and this was not good. Instead of being offered a refund, I was told their food is fresh. We were wrong. Additionally, my mother and I have celiacs disease and were sick the whole next day. We spoke to them Making the order about the allergy and were assured everything was ok. Since we were both sick, and both had sushi, we must have had gluten in the sushi. They said it was nothing, they don't know what to say, maybe we ate something else that made us sick. I've been gluten poisoned at restaurants before and when I offer a complaint, they never question me and usually offer a refund and apology. She told me I was wrong and "sorry you got sick." After saying, you might loose my business, you're doing little to regain my trust-- she dismissed the comment and said we must have had something else. So disappointing to see a restaurant not take ownership of their mistake. I don't love leaving a negative review as I have great respect for the work and talent in a kitchen, but the restaurant should also offer the same respect back to their customers. When Toro first came to town they started with a bang. Top grade seafood, great cuts of beef and all systems were go. As with many restaurant startups the quality of supplies have a direct correlation to margins. As margins got thinner as their capital evaporated the supply quality rolled back and the customer experience became only mediocre at best. The hibachi tables seemed to be strictly a weekend treat and then slower. Luncheon service slugged along both upstairs and downstairs. For a while I enjoyed the Shushi Bar and watched the fish cuts get smaller and smaller. Their ginger salad was good. Cold and ample dressing. Once that wore off I bounced. Back to my roots, Bethel's House of Yoshida. Toshi & Aoki kill it over there. Not overstaffed they have excellent fresh fish and awesome dish specialities. Go there! read more

I haven't been back to Toro in over a decade. In the past I liked being able to have some General Tsos and Sushi in the same meal. Service is very prompt and attentive. We came here on a Saturday night and the restaurant was about 2/3 full. It's a very big restaurant. We ordered a few dishes. Fried rice, Love boat, and a kids hibachi meal. The hibachi and the fried rice was great. The sushi? I have to say was pretty below my expectations. Presentation wise it was fine. But the fish quality was just not there for me. The rolls were okay. I think the next time I come back I will stick with the Chinese and the Hibachi options. read more

In the past I have ordered out from this restaurant and this time was the first time indoor dining which was a very positive experience. I enjoyed my platter which was tuna which consisted of sashimi, rolls and tuna on a bed of rice. The Tuna was fresh definitely a party in my mouth so delicious. It was complemented with a dry bottle of sake which was just lovely bringing out the taste of the tuna. We went early to eat here and were happy with the quality of the fish it was fresh and tasted great. The reception or hostess lacked serious customer service and basically snarled as we walked in. The waitress we had was very attentive and got our food to us quickly. All of the sushi we tried was great very fresh and good flavor. We sat right near the sushi bar that had over four men preparing fresh sushi and it was fun to see. The decor is a bit run down and the lighting is a bit dim for the restaurant. They offer hibachi upstairs which we didn't try and hot food is offered as well. We will Be back. Ext time or may just try it all via take out. The Best Chinese Restaurant in the entire Area. A real eat in restaurant which are very rare is always spotless and modern fresh decor. Even the bathrooms are like a 5 star hotel. As for the food the sushi is always fresh and the rolls are beautifully prepared by real sushi sheds. The fried rice is the best around , the lunches are great and menu is both Chinese and Japanese with many Japanese dishes like tempura etc there is also an upstairs habachi area that is busy and reservations on weekends is helpful. The service is very attentive and the food comes out quick. I travel 20 min to go there and would rather drive the extra distance then settle for any other restaurant. Highly recommended read more

So I just wanted to say how amazing the food is at this restaurant! WE've alway done takeout out orders and always would get the Thai food. One evening, my best friend and I decided to go out to dinner at the restaurant. It was our first time, so we are trying to find the front door, lol. We went in and were led to our tables. The servers were pretty good and the food was amazing! I tried the sushi and wow, I would totally come back for the sushi! But as my best friend and I were eating, I noticed a few servers and host (Who weren't busy) were just standing around and talking near by our table. And we could hear their casual conversation. It's great to chat with your coworkers, but I just felt uncomfortable having them near by just standing around doing nothing. They honestly shouldn't be just standing around chatting near the guests that they are serving, but should take their chatting to the back or in the kitchen (That's what we do at the kitchen I work at a senior home). So that's pretty much the only thing that bugs me and I would totally come back...Sushi but maybe just stick to take out order for a little while. The steak was tender and juicy, and the shrimp had a wonderful flavor that was enhanced by the garlic butter. The fried rice was some of the best I've had, with just the right amount of seasoning. I have eaten here for the past 10 years and I used to love it; I can no longer recommend take out it was horrible for the past three time that we got it. Spending about 100 to 170 each time on it for my large family. The flavors were horrible almost "chemical tasting" and not just to me but to 5 people it tasted off each time. Some dishes with no flavor at all or very dry. Yukie!! We order items like the lo mein, hibachi noodles, udon, and different kinds of fried rice. Go upstairs to see the show! The hibachi chefs are talented and entertaining. They flip bits of zucchini and shoot saki into your mouth from 4 feet away. They make a flaming onion ring volcano on the grill. They flip spatulas, forks, and knives around (and hardly ever drop one). It's a fun environment! We ordered some sushi and sashimi rolls too. I went here with my friends, family, and French exchange students. We had an okay experience at best. It had started off well, we had gotten there a bit early and sat down at a hibachi table as we waited for our hibachi experience to finally start. Once it had started that was when it all went downhill. The soups that you get before the chef starts to cook your food, everyone had gotten one but one of my friends had UNCOOKED RICE in it for some reason? There's not supposed to be any rice in there. Once our hibachi chef had started to cook he burnt our rice, put way too much sauce on all of the food, and yet somehow all of the food was somewhat bland? And there were literal burnt marks on our rice?! The portions were INSANE. You either got half a plate full of whatever the chef was cooking or you barely got any food. and I'm not one to usually complain but this experience was horrible. And we also had to remind our chef to pour the water in our mouths and fling the vegetables into our mouths as well. The sauces were non existent. One of the servers was making fun of one of our French exchange students accent. And also these complaints aren't only coming from us, but also from our friends who went this weekend and said the same things. The food was mediocre at best. The service wasn't that good. read more

Came in on a Friday night for a 6:30 PM reservation. The host who greeted us was very friendly and bought our party to a table in the back. The dining room was pretty crowded, although service still remained pretty fast. We received our drinks within 2 minutes of ordering, and ordered a Mai Tai, One Night in Tokyo, and a Ruby Foo. Drinks were all solid, and came in hefty pours. For food, we ordered the fried calamari asian style, fried dumplings, yellowtail jalapeño, sesame chicken , salmon teriyaki, and a Crazy Roll to share. I was pleasantly surprised by the Chinese dishes (I have found that the quality of food has been dropping at Chinese takeout restaurants around the area), and found the fish in the sushi to be very fresh. I went in for lunch for the first time to meet up with a friend. We had a nice lunch there. The waitress was very kind. I then placed an order to go for dinner for my children. I live 25 minutes away from Toro in Newtown. Once I arrived home, I opened up the container of lo mein to serve to my children. This is when I spotted this big green black fly. I called the restaurant immediately and had absolutely no remorse. The woman who first answered passed the phone to the head guy of the restaurant. Didn't catch his name because he never presented himself. I explained to him the situation and he first said that he'll give me a refund.. then afterwards he said he'll have the owner call me tomorrow because he can't refund it. I can't understand why he can't refund it. This was meant for my toddlers to eat, now I have to go out of my way with two overtired toddlers to look for food. This restaurant lacks empathy and professionalism. I can't even comprehend how the chefs didn't notice this. They truly don't care about their costumers and are clearly not clean. read more

The lady that answers the phone is extremely rude and runs me over. Doesn't let me talk and acts like she is in a rush. I had never been here before coming from Danbury Asian food is my favorite food. I have eaten a lot of different places over Connecticut I got to this restaurant and it was desolate. I went inside. And got dirty. Looks immediately even at the counter. I had just got there. She tapped her nails very hard on the card reader to get my attention I asked her if there was duck sauce and utensils in the bag she said yes I went outside to eat I just worked all day and haven't eaten anything. There is no utensils no duck sauce and they forgot half of my order I waited patiently got my food, utensil, and duck sauce I went outside to eat I have to say this is probably the worst Chinese food I have ever had. I got a beef for snow, peas, and brown rice. The snow peas were mush. The beef had giant chunks of can't even chew and everything is so bland it is only texture, which is almost mush disappointed, considering that two eggrolls a meal and brown rice was over $30 then as I said outside, the workers are smoking marijuana and vaping. Ordered General Tso shrimp and wonton soup to pick up. The wonton soup smelled revolting, almost like bleach. It went straight in the trash. The shrimp was tough and rubbery and the sauce had a weird undertaste. The only thing edible was the rice. I've never been a fan of Toro's Chinese dishes but thought I'd give it another try as my favorite Newtown Chinese restaurant is closed on Mondays. Decided it was time to update my review. I read my old review and nothing has changed. I ordered the chicken with string beans, which was flavorless chicken and steamed string beans when I expected the beans to be sautéed. The wontons in the wonton soup had a pasty texture, but the flavor was good. Came in for hibachi for the first time to our surprise they have hibachi located upstairs only. My wife had knee surgery and can't use stairs. We sat on main level, and ordered filet hibachi dinner. They brought out the toughest piece of steak ever!! Not filet! The dressing for the salad was to strong of ginger taste, And we didn't eat it. We ordered California roll and they were great as well as the spring rolls. I ordered vegetable hibachi and it was swimming in a teriyaki soup. It was not good. BTW - ordered here during Covid almost weekly... all of a sudden they stopped deliveries even though I've had scores of deliveries in the past. What doesn't make sense is they deliver to "Newtown" and I am literally less than 2 miles outside Sandy Hook which is Newtown yet they will deliver 15 miles or more to the other side of Newtown... makes no sense. When I explained this to the manager, they said "sorry - outside Newtown". Now I use other delivery services but take my business elsewhere. Dining and take from here for 15 years, sushi, Chinese and hibachi. Always has been tasty, many unique items, clean! Truly am a regular, and truly get take out monthly at least 6+ days and take in dinner at least 3nights...so we know the menu and food well. To say our last dinner taken home of 3 different dishes was underrated is understated. Flavorless chow fen, moo shu was a pile of flavorless cabbage and barely anything else. Appetizers were blah, soups (3 varieties) were standard. Don't know if they got a new kitchen staff. Summer staffing? We'll think about expanding our distance of where to go next. read more
