After our fantastic meal at Duck Soup Inn on San Juan Island, we were looking forward to another great one at New Leaf Cafe since it was recommended by our inn keeper. Unfortunately the food was mediocre and the service was bizarre! Too bad because we cancelled our reservation at Allium based on the recommendation.
By the time our waitress finally made it over to our table we had all decided on what we wanted to eat and which bottle of wine we wanted. But the waitress refused to take our food order with the wine order, insisting that she had to take them separately. So she brought the wine and THEN took our food order. Of course that meant we sat there for a long while drinking our wine while we waited for our food. Admittedly and thankfully we had a delicious basket of bread while waiting. Our spaced-out bread-basket deliverer dude had no idea what was in the bread but hey, I went to college too.
I often ask the wait person what their favorite items are and have had many great meals that way. When I asked the waitress what she liked she looked completely shocked and confused. Really, has no one ever asked you that before? After a loooong pause she said she didn't have any favorites but there were three things she didn't like, including the arugula salad and the seafood soup (because it was too touristy!!!) Seriously? We wondered if she had even tasted any of the food there. So we did NOT order the seafood soup obviously although one of our brave party did order the arugula salad which she said was fine. Our friends asked if they could special order some montrachet cheese on the side and we were told (somewhat snootily) that the chef, who was not there, would have to be contacted for "pricing." YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME! We spent over $200 and you want to quibble over some cheese? Back in the Stone Age when I was a waitress I would have slipped the sous chef a $10 and just made it happen. It's the economy, stupid.
I had a Caesar salad and crab cakes with sweet pear and habanero sauce. The Caesar, meh. I can whip up better with my eyes closed. The sauces for the crab cakes were lovely but I thought the crab cakes themselves tasted a bit fishy. In all fairness though, my table mates did clean up everything I left on my plate. The kobe sliders were flavorful but very, very fatty and left me feeling oily. The mac 'n cheese with duck was OK, very very rich. The kobe carpaccio must have been decent though because our fellow diner didn't offer us any and it disappeared pretty quick!
Dessert, however, did not disappoint and was actually quite wonderful. We shared the flourless chocolate cake and a nectarine cobbler, both amazing. However when we asked if we could have some coffee we were told "no." ???!!!!!!!!!!! The waitress recovered to some extent and offered an Americano but the attitude-damage was done. We might have ordered some after-dinner drinks and boosted the bill but it was so obvious they wanted us to giddy-up that we decided to get out of Dodge asap.
Would absolutely not recommend this place for dinner but would swing by for drinks and dessert. Don't go too late though or you will get a scolding. read more
