We had a fantastic dinner at New Leaf. Every single dish blew us away. The green chile pork pozole was perfectly balanced with just the right amount of spice and decadent melt in your mouth pork slow cooked to perfection. The preparation and presentation of the Hawaiian blue marlin carpaccio was masterful. Drenched in rich olive oil and doused in sea salt. Simply delicious. We also bought a bottle of their special allocation of Petit Verdot red wine - made in Walla Walla especially for New Leaf. The bottle came with a blank face and we used a permanent chalk pen to write our own personal note on the bottle which made for a memorable keepsake. Finally, I must mention the excellent and attentive service. The crew at New Leaf is a veteran crew of true professionals who must be commended for their commitment to excellence. We had breakfast here. Came about 9:30am and waited for maybe 10-15 minutes for seating. The outdoor seating is nice but we sat inside because it was what's available. I ordered the two eggs your way and boyfriend ordered the croque madame. We had coffee and the coffee was good. The food was amazingly good. The server kept checking on us to make sure the water and coffee was adequate. We will definitely go back the next time we are in town. read more

We came on a Friday evening and the food was so good we had to come back the next day. I had the Filet Mignon both days and each time it was seasoned and cooked perfectly (I like medium). My partner had the clams linguini one night and the chicken the next and both were excellent. Don't miss the small plates. The French Onion soup, Forest Salad, and Octopus dishes were all amazing. For the price, I would have expected both the food and the service to be way more refined. We started off with the beef carpaccio. While it was good, it was drenched in olive oil - like close to a quarter cup of olive oil (yes, there was enough that I actually lifted one side of the plate up so I could move the puddle to one side and scoop it up with a spoon). At least the oil was good and they gave us a bread basket to blot oil off the meat. Second, we had a special arugula salad with prosciutto. Had it not been on a bed of pita bread, the oil pools would have been a complaint on this plate too. I got a king salmon special for dinner, my better half had the scallops. Both proteins were cooked well, however, this time the flavors were lost under the beurre blanc sauce. In my mind, the sauce should be an accompaniment, not the main focus. The green beans were cooked well, as were the French fries. The mashed potatoes were good, but also very heavy as a result of the butter and cream.. Service was relatively attentive, although we used the same silverware throughout (at $30-40 per entrée, I would expect at least one reset). We were promptly offered refills on our drinks and our water glasses did not go empty. read more

I don't understand the rave reviews, this place is mediocre at best. We paid $140 for a less than average meal. The oysters were small and oddly presented--- in crushed ice with herbs so it was a weird green color. The mignonette was in a tall thin shot glass that was unsteady on the ice. No spoon was given to pour it on the oysters. We also ordered a Caesar salad that was really subpar- the dressing was watery and had no depth of flavor, no umami. My crabcakes (which are on the small plate menu) were fine. They were quite small- two cakes the size of silver dollars. They were tasty but not worth $19. My husband's halibut was delicious but again the plating was strange. Everything was plopped on top of one another in a pasta bowl shaped dish. Not the greatest presentation. We were so disappointed with dinner that we didn't even want to stick around for dessert. I am not sure whether it's because I am from NYC where good food abounds or if the food in general on Orcas Island is disappointing, but I really would not recommend this restaurant. Absolutely horrible service and food! Waitress Jenna managed to mess up a simple order for 2 (!) people in three different ways (!!!) it completely ruined our experience! There was only one special request: substitute the fries for risotto in the chicken dish. I end up getting the fries anyway, the chicken i got had about 2 bites of meat in it and she charged me for a completely different chicken (a higher priced meal than what i ordered) When i pointed that out she decided to argue with me, although it clearly was her mistake. Then instead of bringing a chocolate cake she gave us vanilla ice cream. The food was nowhere near good as well. read more

Rewind two years ago when we first had the pleasure of having breakfast here at the New Leaf Cafe. It was Mother's Day and it was a day that on a culinary standpoint, has changed our lives. You see here at the New Leaf they source their ingredients from the local farms on island. Fresh eggs, veggies, fruits -- all of it. It's all local. Then comes the house made smoked salmon that arrived with my smoked Salmon Benedict. I will tell you honestly that upon tasting this I had died and gone to heaven. I won't even start to talk about that Hollandaise sauce.....oh that sauce! Hubby had their homemade sausage with some eggs -- yes again, homemade. Our son had the brioche french toast. Oh and the toast they bring you comes with a french pastry jam that is to die for. On every visit to Orcas we stop here. There is no question. Make sure to try the mimosa's made with fresh squeezed orange juice. Ah-mazing! read more

New Leaf Cafe catered my wedding recently, and did a really fantastic job. The food was great, the staff was courteous and efficient and they were very nice about answering our millions of questions beforehand. Their food and fees are a bit pricey, but everybody had told us that they are the best on Orcas Island, and it turned out to be worth the cost. We had initially considered bringing caterers in from the "mainland" but we're glad we went ahead with New Leaf. Jon and Megan even went the extra mile by providing us with rice (a staple for us Hawaii people). In the past, we've eaten at New Leaf Cafe for breakfast, and this was wonderful as well. Thanks New Leaf for helping make our wedding a very memorable event! read more

Didn't get to eat here and really wanted too but the host gave away our seats after waiting for 45mins. He didn't even tell us why. He said the wait would be 15mins and would texted me when seats are available and had to split our group of 10. We were fine with the split and the wait. Friends visited from out of town a couple nights ago. It was Sunday night so we decided on the "New Leaf Cafe". They'd been to "Nel Thorns" in LaConner, WA. the night before so the New Leaf had its work cut out. From the time we entered until after departing our friends had nothing but the highest praise for the New Leaf. A nice ambient atmosphere with an on task and delightful server. We started off with a dozen sautéed Judd Cove Oysters, a basket of Cottage Bread and a Warm Goat Cheese Salad. All went very well with a bottle of Sinister Hand Cabernet . Next came two Filet Mignon's, a Pan Roasted Mad Hatcher Chicken Breast and a order of Garlic Escargot. All outstanding! It couldn't have been better. From presentation to mouth. The head Chef Steve Debaste is a major reason the New Leaf's success. He's done a fantastic job. He came out and greeted us during our evening experience. He's always in an upbeat and delightful mood. We ended the evening with a triple layer Chocolate Cream Cheese Frosted Cake with a scoop of Lopez Creamery Ice Cream. Two words- Absolutely Awesome! We all agreed it had to be the best, or close to the best chocolate cake we'd ever had. Along with the cake we had Crème Brulee also outstanding. Well done New Leaf, well done. Thanks. read more

Everything that we ate here was picture perfect and scrumptious... the flavors lingering long after the meal and compelled us to return three times over our four-day vacation. Not only was the customer service on par with some of the best restaurants that I've eaten in, but, the food stood on its own and everything else from the well-selected wines to the humble ambiance added to an overall wonderful experience. I have had better food from the New Leaf Cafe over the past few days then I have in Seattle over the past month - I credit this to New Leaf's brilliant chef and dedicated wait staff. Definitely one of Orcas Island's best up and coming restaurants and worth a try for all foodies far and wide!! read more

I have just one piece of advice - get reservations! We were staying at the Outlook Inn for a long weekend on Orcas, so we decided to try their restaurant one night. Luckily we got there right when they opened so we got a table, but everyone else that came in 15 or 20 minutes later was told it would be almost a three hour wait. Service was amazing here and so was the food. I had their fisherman's pot and my husband had a steak. Absolutely no complaints about the meal - we will definitely be back on our next trip to Orcas. read more

Every time I come to this cafe, I am delighted. I have some suggestions. My reservations are designed so I can make my ferry home to Lopez Island. The host/hostess should ask all people as they walk up if they have reservations instead of taking people in the order they arrive. The 2 parties in front of me did not have reservations but she prepared their table and sat them first. Instead of my 5pm reservation, I didn't sit down until 5:10 which matter when I have to leave by 5:40 to make the ferry home. That's why I made a reservation. My server on Monday Sept 17th (a lovely male) was efficient and kind, so courteous as I was rushing to have my meal and get the ferry home to Lopez. He made my rushed meal SO pleasant and exemplified true customer service. However, when someone who does not eat grains orders sliders without the bread, perhaps give something else? The bread takes up a lot of stomach room. Offer another slider or another veggie or something. Not just 2 sliders with no buns. When I told him I was allergic to canola oil, he took my clams away immediately to check with the kitchen. The menu said olive oil. If I would have eaten canola oil, I would have gone into anaphylaxis. They re-made the meal which, again, was a waste of time. Canola oil, and other processed vegetable oil, is one of the leading causes of brain degeneration like Alzheimers and dementia. It is also a highly toxic carcinogen. You should do some research and take it off your menu NOW. I have 3 favorite restaurants on Orcas I recommend to all my clients and friends. I would love to see some changes and up your customer service game. read more

This is one of my new favorite restaurants...if only it wasn't 1500 miles from my home! My husband and I ate both dinner and breakfast at the New Leaf Cafe while staying at the adjoining Outlook Inn for our anniversary. The first thing I have to mention is the location. The restaurant overlooks the water and the view is spectacular. Although the weather wasn't great on our most recent visit to Orcas, the view still sets the scene for a romantic dinner. We started out with the steamed manila clams (with white wine and garlic). I am a huge fan of clams, and I have to say these were the best ones I've ever tasted. They were flavorful and so tender! For the next course, my husband had a wild mushroom soup, with shiitake and porcini mushrooms and a bit of cream. I had the warm goat cheese salad, which had caramelized pistachios, pomegranate seeds, and a balsamic drizzle. Absolutely delicious! For our main courses, my husband had a goat cheese and prosciutto stuffed chicken breast, and I had the shellfish pot -- alaskan king crab legs, (more) steamed clams, steamed mussels, and four of the biggest and most delicious shrimp I've ever had! Everything was cooked perfectly. For dessert, we had the special, which was an eight-layer carrot cake with cream cheese frosting. Our server was bubbly yet professional, and we were pleasantly surprised at the reasonable cost of such a high quality meal. Breakfast was equally delightful. I had the smoked salmon benedict and he had the smoked salmon scramble, with "New Leaf potatoes" and brioche toast. The scramble was served with a dollop of amazing fresh cream cheese. The coffee was so delicious! It was a great way to start our day. I highly recommend New Leaf Cafe to anyone visited Eastsound, or Orcas Island in general. The New Leaf Cafe was one of the few restaurants open for dinner on Monday, May 4th, and we were lucky for that reason because we may not have dined there if the restaurant in our Inn had been open instead. The halibut was done to perfection. It came with pine nuts and a green sauce that complimented it perfectly. Unfortunately, I don't remember the type of sauce as described on the menu. If the restaurant reads this review I hope they will kindly provide that info along with the ingredients/recipe. I'd love to try and recreate it. The baby kale salad was out of this world. As a vendor I've sold many varieties of greens at my local farmer's market yet I've never tasted baby kale as fresh and delicate as those served in this salad. The salad was simple with a delicious dressing that wasn't overpowering. A magnificent full arc rainbow that appeared before our food arrived was an added treat. Half the restaurant ran outside to take photos. All the tables have a view of the water and the service was good. Don't miss an opportunity to have dinner here while you're on Orcas Island. read more

We sat in the bar as we arrived without a reservation on a Thursday night and they were busy. The bar is small, but cozy and we received good service. I had the halibut and my husband the tenderloin, both were well prepared, very flavorful, and served promptly. Interesting Martini with St. Germains was fun to try. Nice selection of wines. My husband tried the 6 layer chocolate cake for dessert, and I couldn't resist a bit...it was delicious seasoned with a slight taste of cayenne for a little kick. Worth a stop! read more
