on 6/10 I came to this New Hyde park Diner because I really wanted to eat at NHPD. Walking into this fresh and lively restaurant, I start to look around and things seemed off. The service was good, cordial, friendly and all of that but the I saw Halal on the window, and I saw Lava Cafe on the uniforms. I mean it looks NHPD but noooo. I searched on Yelp to see if it was a such thing as Lava Cafe. Whelp, this is no longer NHPD. It is officially Lava Cafe with reviews as of the moment. 12/21/25 I ordered the triple chicken salad club/decker. The food looked good, but unfortunately the taste didn't match the presentation. I ended up taking the bacon off the sandwich because it tasted like it had been sitting out since the morning -- there was no real bacon flavor at all. The fries were hard, which was disappointing. On the positive side, the coleslaw was good and the water was fine, but overall the food just wasn't great this time. It's unfortunate because this is one of those places that was once known for really good food. Lately, it feels like quality is changing, and not for the better. Hopefully this was just an off day, but this visit didn't live up to what I've come to expect. read more

We were put all the way in the back which was good as our party had 15 people post funeral. The food was meh. My rueben sandwich was what I'd nicely call rubbery with a few strands of sauerkraut. Everything looked good, but didn't taste the best. The service was excellent - quick and concise. We kept changing seats, but the staff gave everyone the correct order. I'd say, if there's no other place near there, go, but don't expect a high bar. Many other diners with better offerings. read more

An awful dining experience we all had today. The waiter who served us had a nasty, bad attitude. He was arrogant, downright rude. One person was waiting over a 1/2 hour for her small house salad, meanwhile the waiter we had was standing around with other co- workers talking instead of checking on our food orders. Another friend asked for a coffee refill and the waiter got annoyed that our friend asked him again for a refill. Decent place serving your standard diner fare. I've visited a bunch of times over the years and have always stuck with my usual favorites. Burgers are good, as are the breakfasts. My favorite item is probably any style club sandwich. I'm not sure if they make their own potato salad, but nevertheless, it's quite enjoyable. Staff is always friendly and accommodating if you have any special requests. Nothing is going to blow you away, but on the flip side, nothing has been a disappointment either. New ownership has renamed the restaurant to Lava Diner, serving halal food. The Grand Opening was on Friday, May 15th and we were happy to see most of the servers and busboys there when we went for lunch today. The place was jumping. lt was a 20 minute wait for a table but we gladly sat at the counter where there was no wait. We heard that the chefs remain the same and the breakfast I ordered was exactly as I remembered it with the only change being that the bacon is beef which I was interested to try. I like my bacon crispy but sadly the beef version can't be cooked as long as pork otherwise it'll be like eating leather. It was ok but I think I'll pass on the beef bacon next time. The Philly cheese steak panini came with cole slaw & pickles which remained the same and wasn't disappointing. We were happy to see that the iced coffee is still bottomless. All in all we were happy with the experience and welcome the new owners to the neighborhood. read more

Rating: 3.5 Much love for this Diner- I've come here with my family a few times this year now as it is a good meeting spot location wise. I agree with a lot of the reviews - the parking lot is big, diner is often not too crowded, food is a tiny bit overpriced but consistently good. I usually get their Italian panini - cheese, chicken, broccoli rabe with sweet potato fries- very good! Great for kids, which is a main priority when dining with my niece and nephew! We've been waited on by the same staff each visit- not super friendly but nice enough and very accommodating. I especially appreciate how clean and nice the bathroom is usually. We went here for Easter lunch like we have have done for years. We arrived at 12:30 PM. After deciding what we wanted we ordered from the special menu. Now our soup and salad is served and told that they have no more leg of lamb, Really now. They supposedly ran out Saturday. Poor planning on their part. I ordered the chicken stuffed with bro and mozzarella cheese. It came out with some sauce of butter on it. I asked what it was and told a scampi sauce. I said scampi sauce is made with white wine and I cannot have it because of medical reasons. I was than told only butter and garlic. I have to feed my mother and waitress that kept calling momma seemed to keep rushing me. I was eating my salad and here she is asking am I done with this (my bread dish) which she put a good part of her hand on. I have not even touched the bread yet at this point. After I finished my salad I placed that bread dish on top of it. Now I only ate less than a 1/4 of my food and am still feeding my mom and here she is asking if I want my food wrapped. Now I am pissed so I asked are you in a hurry, I am still eating. I only ate a bit more as I was so stressed from all of this. My 10 yr old found a hair in her eggs. We took it up to the owner and he conveniently couldn't see it even though we pointed it out multiple times to the waitress. Mind you I was not asking for a discount or free food, I was just brining it to their attention . If it was me I would not bother but I am not teaching my children having hair in food served in a restaurant is acceptable We were regular customers and no longer will be eating there and it's not only because of the hair but the owner should have at least apologized and said he will speak to the chefs to be more careful. I got the dinner special or Yankee Pot Roast and got to choose a soup or salad(I chose salad with vinaigrette) as well as a vegetable (I got zucchini) and potato (I opted for French fries). The pot roast came in a nice sized portion with delicious gravy on top. The salad was big with many different vegetables. The zucchini came in a tomato sauce which reminded me of the dish my Italian mother sometimes makes. I was pleasantly surprised by the lack of oil on the French fries as well. Met a friend for bkfst. What kind welcoming friendly staff. The owner/mgr cared so much he walked behind an elderly diner to ensure she didnt fall! The food was brought out to temperature, the coffee served up piping hot, the tea selections was phenomenal Most importantly the place, the restrooms, the counters were clean ! This is something that we don't have much of in the south - a diner with a massive menu of breakfast and lunch entrees. Burgers, sandwiches, entrees, desserts. Lots and lots to choose from and when you're not sure if you want breakfast or lunch, that's a really challenge! In the end, it was the turkey club which came with fries or potato salad. The sandwich was assembled perfectly, quartered and toothpicked. Lots of bacon, lots of sliced turkey. It was exactly as it's supposed to be. Service was good. The big bowl of cookies/desserts at the register was a nice touch. Sometimes, all you want is a small sweetness at the end of the meal and not a ten foot tall piece of carrot cake. The food here is mediocre, I've had better breakfast else where and the only reason I keep coming back here is bc I live close by. The prices are on the higher side most likely bc it's Nassau County. The portions are decent. The waitresses aren't always friendly and sometimes look miserable. For some reason, their buttered toast is always burnt and the potatoes are not seasoned enough and taste bland. I always get the breakfast special-1 egg, bacon, potatoes, w/buttered toast and it comes with coffee & juice. Love their hot coffee though. Also, their bagel sandwiches and blueberry muffin aren't that great, I would stay away. Overall, it's still just a diner and you shouldn't expect much.
