I was here back in 2022 from Boston. We spent the day in New Glarus. Working in the bakery business over 30 years I'm always interested in trying out the local small bakeries. They made the BEST rasberry linzer bars I've ever had in my life! We tried a number of different things from there and they were all absolutely fresh and delicious. I have a co-worker who was traveling to Wisconsin to visit family and I recommended your bakery. She brought me back a box of the raspberry linzer square all the way from New Glarus. They were as amazing as I remember. I went online to try and have them shipped but was told they would get damaged in transport. Truth be told I'd be happy even if the were broken in pieces, I'd just grab a fork and eat it out of the box Highly recommend!!! read more

My husband and I visit this bakery every time we are in Wisconsin and they never disappoint on doughnuts. After some biking riding on the great nearby trails we decided to stop into town to see how they were surviving Covid. We were excited to see a few shops open including the bakery so we went in. The display cases were still well stocked given it was late in the day (a sign perhaps that business is slow?). I selected a peanut square which was good but a bit dry and not what I remember from my younger days in Milwaukee. I also got a chunk of the bee sting cake for later - it was pricey but excellent. That center of cream is wonderful. We also picked up a donut-like pastry with a maple filling that was quite good. So why just three stars given the good eats? Neither of the young workers were wearing masks! State mandate or not as a business serving the public the owners should be enforcing mask wearing by their staff during this times. Stopped here a month or two ago and forgot to publish. I got a caramel apple fritter, plus 2 rhubarb bars for my parents, plus a turtle, and some apple bread. Everything was very good. The rhubarb bars were tart and my dad said the turtle was delicious. From what I heard, the apple bread was moist and delicious. I wasn't around for that but I got it for the grandkids and my mom when the grandkids were visiting her. The one drawback is what I got for myself. The fritter was not that great. It had some caramel icing but the fritter itself didn't have a glaze or anything in addition so it was fairly dry. Next time I'm through the area, I'll probably try it again as everything else seemed very good. read more

There's something for everyone.   I kept eyeing the turtle cheesecake until my husband said we needed to get a piece.  They're huge square pieces, so it's probably best to share with someone.  It was thick and rich and delicious.   My husband got 2 peanut butter cookies, and said they were pretty good.  I got a couple of pocket cookies and didn't care for them.  I did sort of like the croquette cookie.  I wish I'd tried some other desserts, because they looked awesome, but we bought enough!   We only paid $9 for everything we bought. Every time I walk in I get a rush of nostalgia from all the years growing up (from infancy to now). I remember visiting with my relatives to get the best darned hard Swiss bread and chocolate tart. Purchased an eclair since there was a sign in the door celebrating today as "National Eclair Day." I took one bite into it to instantly realize it had been frozen. When I brought it to their attention and told them the custard was frozen inside with ice crystals, there was no offer to give me another item. Instead, the girl tried to say it was just chilled in the case. It wasn't until I pinned her down that she admitted they were baked on a previous day and taken out of the freezer. So frustrating! A good bakery doesn't pull baked items out of their freezer, put them in a case, and sell them as if they were baked that morning. We won't return. read more

Small, but oh so mighty. We stopped in on a recommendation from a friend, and it was the best decision we made. The worst decision we made was not finding the time to come back here to get more treats before we went home! The place is relatively small, but they had a really good variety of baked goods, from chocolate brownies to coffee cream cake to crispy and savory bread sticks. They also had coffee and hot tea for sale, but we stuck to the sweets! We ordered an almond horn, cream horn, and a "bee sting." The prices were pretty good as well, and we could have (and SHOULD HAVE) ordered more goodies. Almond Horn - This was a pretty good horn. I think it just paled in comparison to our other purchases. It was flaky and light, and was a solid pastry horn. Cream Horn - The cream. Let me repeat. THE CREAM. This is by far the BEST cream horn we had ever had, and it almost all comes down to the decadent cream inside. Sure, the flaky and crispy pastry was the perfect vessel, but its the copious amounts of lightly sweet, super silky, melt-in-your-mouth cream that stole the show. AMAZING. Bee Sting - I'm done. This was so good I just can't stand that we don't live closer to this glorious little bakery that could. The top is a honey-almond topping, the middle is a THICK layer of buttercream, and the bottom is some sort of yellow cake. I couldn't believe the buttercream on this thing. The layer was so thick that I was a little worried at first, because buttercream can be cloyingly sweet sometimes, but this one was sheer perfection. It melted in our mouths, revealing a slightly sweet, lightly buttery flavor that was just unmatched by anything. It even beat the cream horn cream! It was that good. We were unbelievably impressed by this little town bakery, and would highly recommend that you stop by if you are anywhere close to New Glarus. You will NOT leave unsatisfied. read more

Cute little bakery in the middle of New Glarus - they have doughnuts, cakes & cookies as well as some Swiss/German specialties like aniseed cookies. Typically a friend of mine will make my cakes for a 3 person birthday bash we have. This year I decided that I wanted something really special. My BF and I both turned 55 this year. I took several months to really make a decision on a bakery. I had a picture of what I was looking for. The trouble started when I ordered the cakes. Yes, 2 cakes. One was yellow/chocolate marble with butter cream frosting. Hunting or fishing related, let the decorator have fun with it. Other was white with butter cream frosting. Purple with purple roses in various shades of purple. Lady who took the order just couldn't get my instructions straight. Because the birthdays are in July, I asked that the cakes be frozen so we could get them home and into the refrigerator. 1. Cakes were NOT frozen as requested. 2. The cakes were not frosted in butter cream. More on this later. 3. The hunting/fishing related one was frosted in white with orange trim with just piped squiggles in camo colors. Not much of an imagination there. 4. When we got the purple one home, the roses on the top had started sliding off!!!! I had to fix it. That is when it was discovered that the frosting was NOT butter cream. I called the bakery and told them how disappointed I was with both the frosting and the lack of imagination on the sheet cake and that the flowers had started sliding off. She told me some freaking story about how their butter cream frosting was light and fluffy. Nope, not buying that but it was too late to do anything about it. After sending an email explaining my disappointment, I get a long letter from the owner or the owner's daughter explaining how I obviously am new to the area or I would know that their butter cream has been carefully honed to perfection.....USING CUSTARD!!!!!!!!!!!! At that point it is no longer butter cream. Period. Had I known? I NEVER EVER would have ordered cakes there. I HATE CUSTARD. Guess what? I have lived all of 8 of my 55 years in this area AND my grandmother made wedding and other cakes for over 40 years. I know what butter cream frosting should taste like. NGB.....whatever you put on my cakes was not butter cream. Period! Of the 30 some people in and out of the party, not one person had anything good to say about the cake. The hunting/fishing one was at least a bit moist. The purple one was so dry you couldn't even pick it up with a fork. $80 for 2 cakes and 1 was completely inedible and the other.....not much better. Birthday parties are all about the cake....This was the worst cake ever and I will never ever order a cake again without having some discussion with a bakery about what their butter cream frosting tastes like! read more

Why oh why did I only get one donut?! It was so hot during Oktoberfest this year, so chocolates and cheesecake were out of the question for transporting back 2.5 hours home. I'm usually very leery of cream-filled donuts since the filling can be...questionable. But it was only $1.15, and I knew it could sustain the heat for a little while. Once in the car with the AC on, I took a bite and was in love. The fiance agreed! The cream filling is way more decadent than other donuts we've had. The texture was wonderful, and the caramel added the perfect touch of flavor and sweetness. I had bought a yummy apple treat from there a couple years ago and quickly devoured it. I visited this place after sampling all the New Glarus beer that the Beer, Bacon, and Cheese fest had to offer. I mean, come on, it's hard not to sample the delicious beer of the same name as the town. About 92% sure that the beer didn't cloud my judgement, but I'm thinking every item this bakery produces is tasty. We got a tub of chocolate cookie dough, and I'm telling you, it made some of the best goddamned cookies I've ever eaten. The dough rose upwards during the baking, and it was really freaking delicious. Can't comment on prices because I don't remember. I do remember, however, tasty cookies. First, let me say that I've been to Switzerland, Germany, & France. I've eaten a LOT of great food, including pastries. I'm also a baking enthusiast...I haven't made anything from a box in over a decade. I walked in here thinking if I was going to blow my low-carb diet, let's really make it count. What a let-down! Blueberry scones were dry and had ZERO flavor. No blueberry flavor, no sugar flavor, no butter flavor. Tasted like a dry mouthful of nothing, and had a gelatinous, gummy ooze on top that I found disturbing when biting into it. That's coming from a person who is not 'texture sensitive.' The texture was off too like dough had been overworked. I'm an adventurous eater, which is why I took 3 small bites to be absolutely sure how I felt about this scone. I fed the rest to my dogs because clearly there wasn't much sugar in this pastry. If hubs doesn't eat the rest of them I'll give them to the birds. Tried an almond nut horn. It was really dry too. Almond flavor was barely there, and again, no butter flavor in the pastry. Helpful hint: if you're going to be chintzy with the fillings, at least have the decency to make the pastry around it taste AMAZING. The bräzeli weren't very crispy and the flavor was ehh/OK. I wonder if wrapping them in cellophane instead of plastic would keep them from going so soft? Maybe they do this because you're supposed to take them home and finish baking them? I've made Norwegian krumkake before and this Swiss cookie is similar in concept. Not sure what the point is of NGB going to all the trouble to make bräzeli if you aren't going to leave them in the iron long enough to give them that beautiful golden color that showcases the intricate patterns of the cookie iron. My entire bag of bräzeli was lily-white and looked like a glorified communion wafer. Do a Google Image Search for the word "Bräzeli" and you'll see what they're supposed to look like. They're golden. The mini apricot turnover things were decent, and my favorite thing of the 4 items I tried. The only thing that saved them was that they were rolled in powdered sugar. They had the proper texture that I was expecting from the scones. There wasn't quite enough apricot filling to balance the amount of pastry it was rolled in. Maybe add another 1/4 teaspoon and they'd be much better. As an experienced baker I get compliments on my stuff all the time. The only conclusion I've come to is that this place uses the flavorless vegetable shortening instead of real butter to save money. Where the heck is all the moisture and the flavor??? The salesgirl wasn't much of a salesperson. She didn't greet my group until a few minutes after we walked in. Then she quietly stood there with a faint smile and waited for me to take the lead of telling her what I wanted. She didn't make any recommendations or suggestions. Rule #1 of sales: find out what your customer is looking for and sell it to them. Repeat. Maybe I'm letting my business-owner brain critique this experience too much. Maybe the gal is super shy. She's probably a baker who simply knew how to operate the cash register. I feel like the 100+ year-old bakery is using old recipes from pioneer days when butter and sugar were scarce & expensive luxuries and the original settlers had to make do with what they had. In Europe, pastry is made like they're serving it to royalty. That's why it's so renowned. I think the main reason why NGB is still around is because folks drive out for festivals or the brewery and then say, "Huh, we drove all the way out here. Now what?" Then someone says, "Well, there's a bakery." The prices are reasonable but who cares? I'd pay a LOT more if the goods tasted a LOT better. Driving through the hilly back roads around here reminds me so much of my time in Switzerland. Too bad the bakery items taste nothing like they do in The Motherland. As a tiny village that relies heavily on tourism, New Glarus businesses need to offer something really fantastic to lure people to drive out here and spend their money. The brewery is doing exactly that. I know the 2 business aren't comparable but still...they could establish a symbiotic business relationship if the bakery's product was just as great as the brewery's. The bakery needs to give tourists something decadent and amazing to soak up all the beer samples they just drank. Then those tourists will bring extra treats home and rave about them to their friends. Unfortunately, the flavor just isn't there...which I suppose you can get away with if you're catering to people whose taste buds have been deadened by alcohol. Maybe the cheese bread or the apple fritter are better than the 4 things I tried...I sincerely doubt I'll come back to find out. The next time I blow my diet with baked goodies it'll be somewhere in Madison instead. Love this unpretentious popular bakery, located right next to the ever popular Glarner Stube. I was so delighted I got some treats to wade me through the long wait at Glarner Stube. There are treats for all ages, and everyone found things they liked. There's usually a line, but the wait is not long at all. I personally really enjoy the original nut horn. It is coated with a nice sugar cover, but not too sweet. The pastry is rather thin, like a flaky pastry. And best of all, its filled with a nutty inside. A little like pecan pie, but not as sticky and sweet. I also tried the sticky bun. It is definitely a steal at $1.75! I like the pastry that is not too thick. Kinda like a cinnamon bun, but with nuts on top! My friend also liked the cookies and bought a pound to share with everyone! Great for party snacks! My father has been a loyal customer of this bakery and would get each of his children a stollen every year. We got the stollen and looked foward to consuming it. Imagine our disappointment at the dried out stollen with none of the flavor of butter or kirsch....nothing like the stollen of years past. Truthfully I get a better stollen at Aldi's or Trader Joe's. For $20 I will get a Racine kringle before I take another chance on one of these dried out loaves of stollen. This is upsetting as in years past it was a go to WI made gift. Sad. read more
