I had arrived earlier than expected for a brunch reservation and it was too cold to wait outside for it so I found the nearest cafe and "Nerd Be Cool" was it. It's a cute little cafe spot with a few chairs and coffee tables for customers to sit. The server was kind and patient when I asked her about the different coffee selections. I went with a Turmeric Matcha, which seemed to be the healthiest choice. I took a sip and that was enough to make wake up my senses and not in a bitter way that turmeric usually does. I had it with coconut milk so it gave it a pleasant taste that made me feel so much warmer. They also sell pastries and I ordered a blueberry donut for my daughter. It was from Doughnut Planet and you can never go wrong with anything that comes from there. read more

This is such a cute neighborhood spot that I recently stumbled upon. They have a pretty big selection of coffees, smoothies and juices as well as pastries. The pistachio donut was so good! Love the huge painting of Albert Einstein, fits the name of the store. The staff here is also kind, and informative when it comes to ingredients in some items. Will be back to try other goodies and their coffee too. read more

I don't drink coffee. But I have a wife and several friends that may or may not be keeping Nerd Be Cool in business by drinking various types of coffee and oat milk from this cute little shop on Court. So while I have picked up coffee here on many an occasion when the aforementioned wife and friends were too hungover and/or lazy to take a walk, I can only report that they love the coffee, as I'm one of the only weirdos in NYC that doesn't drink the stuff. That said, I can report that I personally love the pastries. I feel as though I've tried nearly everything (partial to the banana bread), and I've yet to have an issue. I should tell you that I'm a little biased though, as I love just about all pastries. What do you want from me? They taste good. The staff here is also super friendly, and don't have a problem with our children taking up the cute seats by the window and sharing croissants (read: making a giant mess). So yeah. Nerd Be Cool. This is a reliable coffee spot in this super nice gem of a neighborhood. It is not intended to be original, and to a certain extend this is its strength. It is a predictable good cafe, where the croissants are good enough, there is a good olive oil cake and coffee is always good. The people who run it are friendly and sort of not invasive and being tiny, you always find a good place to sit down in and outdoors. For the same reasons innovation and creativity is milder down here; and being myself such a fan of cultural expansion this makes it a 4-star and not a 5-star place. Plus the name is not my favorite. Not sure this is an imperative (I'd argue then that needs do not need to be cool), or a report (which I resist to accept). read more

Need be cool makes a great coffee, with one of the better deals in the neighborhood: double or triple shots are the same price. I'm not a tea drinker but they have a wide assortment of flavors, and many specialty drinks (e.g. lattes). Need be cool has great pastries - lamingtons, Pumpkin loafs, lemon loafs, croissants, cookies, you name it. I've tried most of them. Need be cool has really neat interiors - both court street locations are inviting to sit and enjoy your coffee inside or on the sidewalk. There's just one thing that has bothered the heck out of me though, and it has led to MANY messy walks home - and that's their cup/lid situation. Maybe it's me, but every lid I've ever put on my cup from here has resulted in coffee consistently dripping down the side and onto my hands, sneakers, pastry bag - they ALL wind up covered in coffee. I guess I could bring my reusable mug and that would solve the issue. But I can't be the only person experiencing this. Please fix the lids. That is all I ask . read more

Came in to this lovely neighborhood cafe in a cold morning in New York. I was in need of some caffeine and a hot drink. I went in and was greeted within seconds, this was my first time here so I decided to go with one of their specialty latte, which is their ube latte. I got it hot with oat milk. The drink was amazing it was smooth with a hint of ube flavor not too overpowering where you cannot taste the espresso. This place is perfect for plant lovers, because it's covered in houseplants! Really cool vibes in the coffee shop. It's also great for people with dietary restrictions, as they have both vegan and gluten free pastry options. They have an extensive list of teas, and the coffee was great! They actually have two locations in the neighborhood. The lady working the counter is very sweet, and she gave recommendations on the pastries and teas that she liked. I like drinking coffee at dumb hours, so I always miss Nerd Be Cool when I'm in the area (which is NOT at all their fault because their hours are very reasonable. I'm just a freak). Was finally able to catch them before closing. They have a giant menu. Lots of teas, health lattes, and of course every type of coffee with every type of milk/alternative milk you can think of. Plus pastries, and donuts from Doughnut Plant. And they sell some reeeeal crunchy shelf-stable goods. The staff is amazing, and there's lots of seating out front. Will definitely be back! yall this place doesn't follow a single health code. they use one single towel with water to clean everything in the store and then rinse it off for the next day and so on... the machines are moldy, the owners are terrible people and they steal tips from the employees.. spend your money literally anywhere else. read more

I stopped by this cafe to wait for our table at Buttermilk Channel. Honestly I think most people in this cafe during peak brunch time do the same thing. However that does not take away from how great this place is. Their cakes and pastries are amazing. I had a sample of their pistachio cake then came back later after Brunch to take a slice of their lemon bread to go. My time here was was cut short because I received a text that my table was ready at Buttermilk Channel around 15-20 mins earlier than I anticipated. I managed to sit down for a few minutes with some mint tea with turmeric honey. I hope to return very soon. read more

love this neighborhood spot but more recently they keep closing early which really sucks. they used to be open til 4 and now i'll walk by at 345 hoping to grab a coffee and they're fully shut down, lights off and everything which really just makes me nervous to even spend time visiting them cause of the inconsistent closing times. read more

Came here while visiting family over Memorial Day weekend. The matcha tea was made very well and we tried a few cookies and donuts on our visit too. Everything tasted amazing. We stopped by 4 times on our trip so that definitely says something! The staff was super friendly and the place was very clean. What more can I say about Nerd Be Cool that hasn't already been stated? The shop uses high quality coffee and offers various milk alternatives to satisfy your vegetarian and vegan needs. I ordered an iced oat latte, which was delicious. They use Oatley oat milk, barista edition, which has 6 grams of added sugar. Personally, I prefer unsweetened oat milk but it's rare to find in most coffee shops. With a price tag of $6, the cost is high but relatively average with its competitors in the trendy/boutique coffee shop community in NYC. read more

They bring in fresh Colombian beans -Devocion every 3am. Chocolaty smooth nutty rich flavor. Tried their cold brew and latte, super clean no sour after taste. Loved it! The owners are very friendly, briefly talked through the tools and machines he uses with his wife. Lovely couple. Expert in coffee tools and process. read more

When this place first opened up, I though it was rad and could finally get a good cup of coffee while waiting for the bus. But after frequenting the place more than a dozen of times the novelty wore off. Compared with other local cafe's like Smith Canteen or East One, their coffee tastes sub par and when it is busy their service grinds to a hault. Once I had to wait ten minutes to order because a dude ahead of me ordered coffee for his whole company. I feel bad for the one Batista they have, she must be really under pressure and seems to take it out on the customers with her sassy and sarcastic comments. Post lockdown, I noticed they added some nice outdoor seating and I am glad they are still in business, but I am not sure what is happening with the management of the place. For starters, what are the hours? Every site I check has a different time. Google says 4:30p, Yelp says 4:00p, a reviewer wrote 2pm, and their insta says 12pm. I feel as confused as a Psyduck. read more

My favorite local coffee cafe! The owners are so passionate about every cup they make and you can tell from the clean decor to the high tech equipment making sure every cup is delicious. Being also originally from Eastern Europe as the owners - this is as close as you can get to having the same experience without going to JFK and booking a flight. I wanted so badly to love this place -- their signage and Einstein mural are rad, and they carry the very delicious Seriously Unsweetened seltzer. Unfortunately, they use Cream-o-Land milk in their espresso drinks. Please consider switching to local, hormone-free dairy (Battenkill Valley Creamery, Hudson Valley Fresh, Five Acre Farms, Ronnybrook Dairy, etc.). It makes a huge difference, especially in lattes, where so much of the drink is milk. read more

I don't know if it is because of Covid 19 and having fewer options but the "cold brew" I had today tasted old and disappointing. I've enjoyed their hot coffees in the past but would NOT recommend the cold drinks. The barista was friendly and the decor is nice, but probably would not come back. Honestly, the "cold brew" tasted like someone had made a batch of hot coffee, but burned it, and said "fuck it, we'll just let it get cold and call it cold brew." Come here for hot coffee and the variety of flavors; absolutely skip the cold brew. read more

Their espresso drinks are little too acidic/burnt tasting to me and the chai latte is SO watery. It barely has any chai flavor.. not sure if it's because I substituted milk for almond milk? But I don't think that should matter I've also tried their jalapeño cheddar scone which was quite dry. Their sandwiches seem to be popular which I'm still open to try, but I'd definitely skip on the drinks

They kicked out all customers exactly at 3.30pm. Everyone were clueless. I would've gone elsewhere had they just given a head ups. It's not great when you charge me over $10 for a small cup of coffee and then kick me out 1.5hrs before closing time on a chilly day.

I ordered a single burger and a Sudan spiced peanut butter latte, for ~$15! That's pretty inexpensive for New York City. I note this as some consider it overpriced. I suppose the food is fairly inexpensive, the lattes slightly higher than average. The "burger" comes wrapped in a homemade pita with diced cucumber, onion, and tomato, plus a few crispy, thick-cut fries and a yummy house sauce. It was a cool twist of the traditional burger and had a nice flavor. The sauce was like a slightly Mediterranean version of Big Mac sauce. The girl working as the barista and cashier was very nice and friendly. She had a nice presence and warm smile, made suggestions, and even gave a stranger free utensils when they popped on to ask. I think it's definitely worth checking out, and it's a good place for a cheap & simple meal that's still quirky and fun.

I also ordered a Moroccan egg salad sandwich which was substantive but surprisingly bland--sparse with the advertised capers and pickled red onions to give it more punch. I've always loved the look of the spot and the vibe--funky decor, outside and indoor facing counters to order, with some outdoor seating for people watching on Dekalb or heading nearby Ft. Greene Park. I see they are renovating and rebranding a bit and adding some burger component. While I didn't love it, I'd definitely give it another shot.

Go early if you don't want them to sell out of anything or purposely go a little later if you want one of their lunch sandwiches on focaccia. I have had the tomato and garlic focaccia twice now and each time it has been exceptional. Minor critique, the slices of garlic could be a bit smaller. I also had the shakshuka focaccia which is divine and I would absolutely recommend both. I need to come back to try their sandwiches as well. I am not a sweets person, but everyone I know loves their pastries. Getting someone a gif tcard here makes for a great gift.

I'm usually more of a savory girlie but all the sweet items we tried were great, especially the rhubarb croissant and the earl grey morning bun. I really enjoyed the focaccia sandwiches (smoked salmon and pea/mint/feta were elite) and the artichoke green garlic slice. The flavor of the sesame stirato was excellent but the bread itself was a tad too chewy for the filling we got with it (tuna salad), so that style probably works better with the jambon beurre. Will definitely be on the rotation whenever I'm in the city -- would love to try some of their seasonal/limited edition items one day, though not sure if I have it in me to brave the lines that can form on the weekends, lol! We'll see :)

We also had the fried soft shell crab sandwich with the side of Caesar salad. The sandwich was well balanced with the crunchy crab and herby aioli. The Caesar was light and refreshing. The fish and chips came with two fried filets of white fish and a basket of classic fries. The fish was lightly battered and flakey. The house made tartar sauce was a good complement to it. It was fresh but don't think it's worth ordering. - East coast oysters were puny. Very mid especially because I've recently tried some at Upstate that were amazing. They're incomparable. - Lobster roll. Okay should've just gone straight for the roll because it was perfect. Buttery and fresh with perfect balance of lobster roll bread. The salad dressing also was delicious. So good! Definitely highlight of this restaurant. - Clam chowder. Also 10/10. Hearty, flavorful. Loved every bite of it. Service was average. They weren't profoundly interested in giving best service instead just chatting amongst each other and dropping off plates. Also they forgot about the clam chowder we ordered and asked if we still want it.. YES..that's why we ordered it. Overall if you don't pay attention to those details it's worth coming for some great seafood. BUT I highly recommend getting a reservation.
