I was really in the mood for a Greek salad and was originally going to try one of the Greek restaurants on Bell Boulevard....but just kept driving until we pulled into the Neptune diner parking lot. I remember coming to this place in its previous iteration (think it was called Jackson Hole)..and was excited to be trying a new spot (at least it was new to us!) I ordered my chicken souvlaki platter, but asked them to hold the fries (and just add extra salad). Others at the table had the chicken avocado club sandwich and a BLT (no tomato). Everything arrived very quickly....super hot and fresh. The food was excellent! My souvlaki was cooked perfectly and the giant chunk of feta on top of the salad was delightful. I probably should've asked them to hold the pita, but I did indulge in most of it. The tzatziki sauce was also just right. Pleasant surprise at Neptune Diner on Bell...great food, great time! Not sure what we expected...years ago our area had a diner or two in every neighborhood, and we went to them all. Now fewer and many are gone. Also diner food doesn't always "wow" us. Decided on a quick burger Sat night and we were wowed. Two beers, two burgers: BBQ and Neptune, and a side of waffle fries. World Cup matches on all TVs above the counter, lively atmosphere, smiling, welcoming and efficient staff. An unexpected surprise was beer on tap. Mmmm! Our burgers were cooked to perfection and delicious. Generous portions, everything fresh, yummy, prepared with care and served hot. We watched the game on our phone at the table which is what we wanted and not something we'd feel comfortable doing at many places, but this felt deeply wonderfully neighborhood. Ample parking right in front and we were told they have valet parking as well. Nicely done Neptune...will return, recommend and I hope economics support this sort of establishment staying around. read more

First some background, on the legacy of Astoria's Neptune Diner one of the greatest diners in the in the history of diners: Neptune Diner wowed dinners for several decades before some of the owners great tired of running a 24 hour business while the other still had more life in them. Sealing its fate was the fact that it was operating atop of ever growing more valuable real estate. This came to a head a couple of years ago and the decision to sell was sealed. Fast forward, the owners that still wanted to continue the legacy took over Jackson Hole Diner in Bell Blvd. And I've been meaning to try it ever since. Today was that day. My guests ordered the usual diner breakfast fare. There orders were very good. I knew that the proof of whether the spirit of the original survived would be in the burger and aroma in steak, respectively. The section on what to order came down to economics: burger 12 bucks and Romanian steak $44 (yes $44 ($10 short of a NY strip steak) I'll be back for the Romanian). What was the verdict you ask? My late partner, and I ate here a few times, and it has always been good, but I've never written a review. I stopped in for dinner tonight, and it was as good as it has always been. This is nothing more than a good old-fashioned Greek diner. Great people, big menu, and great food. I decided to order from the specials menu tonight. I started with a cup of the the avgolemono, the Greek lemon chicken soup. It was so good! The chicken was tender and delicious,, it had orzo in it, and the orzo was also tender, and the lemon provided a nice " Tang" to the soup. A total home run. For my main course, I had the lemon chicken. Again, a total home run. The chicken was so tender, it was literally fall off the bone. You could taste the lemon, it was spiced well, just a fantastic Dish. The potatoes that it came with were fork tender. Again, totally delicious. I had enough left over to take back to my hotel with me. Prices are a tiny bit on the higher end, but considering the high-quality and quantity of the food? Worth every penny. I will be back. Dined food is comfort food! I wasn't sure what I was craving so I decided to go for a variety of foods and each one of them was delicious. There was a lot of seating and luckily my friend and I got a booth which is what we were looking for. We ordered the Fried calamari which was hugeeeee. We had to stop ourselves from eating too much before the entrees arrived so that we would be able to enjoy our other dishes as well. The calamari was perfectly crispy and the marinara sauce paired great with it. We got spaghetti with Parmesan cheese on top. It is your basic spaghetti which was what I was craving so that was great. Then we also got the banana and Nutella pancakes which were also huge and delicious. The whipped salted butter was the star of the show because everything was on the sweeter side so the butter really added a nice hint of saltiness. The servers were super sweet. They checked up on us multiple times and even offered to give more cheese for the spaghetti. When packing the food the go because we had a lot of leftovers, we asked for a container for the marinara sauce too which they sweetly topped off for us. They have a parking lot that's pretty convenient, but street parking isn't too hard to find if it's full! There's plenty of space inside & the menu is extensive & basically has anything you want! I have passed by this place several times but never went in. The diner has a good amount of tables and we got sat quickly once we arrived. The service is great and we got our food fairly quickly. The coffee was strong and tasty. I was not too impressed with the food. I ordered their western omelette with their home fries and white toast. Came here for dinner on a Saturday night and this place was packed. There is a decent amount of selections on the menu and it's pretty standard fare for what you'd see at most other diners. I got a pulled pork burger and it was pretty decent. The pork could have had a bit more bbq sauce, but the burger was cooked well and was juicy despite not being asked how I wanted it cooked. The portions here are quite sizable. The staff is nice and place itself is pretty clean. I think they may have even done renovations after renaming as Neptune Diner. Worth your time! The last time I was here, it was a Jackson Hole, Wyoming - that was a lifetime ago... Went for Sunday brunch and it was packed! Valet service was available even though it had a good size parking lot. I initially thought it was unnecessary but I was proven wrong just thirty minutes later - the parking lot was packed and the valet had smartly arranged all the cars. Greeted with a smile from the host and brought to a booth. The atmosphere was bright and the room was packed. All the wait staff moved efficiently and smartly; the host made sure everything was running smoothly during this very busy Sunday morning. Miguel, our server, was friendly and attentive. This could be our new favorite diner! We came here back when it was the Jackson Hole Hamburger Joint and the menu wasn't that extensive except for burgers, but now that the Neptune has taken over, they've expanded the menu with more diner favorites. The Neptune in Astoria is the original and their menu is huge with a lot more seafood options, but Neptune Bayside has a more focused menu with the usual breakfast, burger and sandwich sections. When you walk in, check out the Specials Board because they're not listed on the printed menu. Take a picture of it for reference when you sit down. For dinner, we went with some Greek specials. What else would you get at a Greek diner? We started with Spanakopita as a table appetizer. It was really stuffed with lots of spinach between layers of baked phyllo dough. Of course, all dinner specials come with an option of soup or salad, but diner soup is the best and they have a lot of choices. Chicken Noodle is always a staple, but on a Friday, they offer both Manhattan and New England Clam Chowders, Lobster Bisque and Avgolemono (Greek Lemon Chicken Soup), but they were out of my usual favorite, Cream of Turkey! The bread basket they provided was excellent with fresh baked rolls (still warm) and whipped butter that you don't have to wait to thaw. I went with the Baked Beef Short Rib, which was off the bone and tender with a light tomato sauce and mashed potatoes and I chose asparagus as my vegetable. My wife got the Stuffed Peppers, which comes with a side of Greek Lemon Potatoes. Those were some BIG overstuffed peppers! Her brother ordered the Pork Souvlaki with rice and a Greek salad topped with a triangular chunk of feta cheese. The chunks of pork were really tender and grilled perfectly. And you know those orange slices they use for garnish? They are really sweet! (If you don't get gravy all over them.) Like many times at diners, we had leftovers to take home, but I polished off my short rib with no room left for dessert. Loaded with potatoes, cut up sausage, cheese and three poached eggs. It was beautifully plated but lacked seasoning on the potatoes. It could've used some onions and peppers or something. Pretty bland. I rarely add salt to my food but I needed both salt and pepper. Poached eggs were perfect. The avocado was a nice touch, made the bowl complete. The lumberjack (pancake) platter didn't disappoint. Pancakes were fluffy and tasted great. The ham, sausage and bacon were good too. Since it was a Sunday, they had cream of turkey soup. We are fans of that. Coffee and hot chocolate was good, too bad the cups are so small! Parking was not easy at first, the lot was full. But after driving around, there was street parking nearby.
