I am a longtime fan of Ace Hardware stores. I like that they are locally owned and usually provide better customer service than that of the big box retailers. Prices are generally in line with the big stores, so I will definitely choose local owned. Now that it is springtime, I have been visiting more frequently in the last month or so, and I feel that I can give a true review. This store is located in the old Orchard Supply Hardware location next to the In-N-Out Burger in Visalia. It is a great use of an already existing space; however, the interior feels a bit old and tired. The employees are friendly enough, but Randy and Richard are the stand-out stars of this location, and you are in great hands with them. I will be happy to wait for their help. Along with regular purchases common for this time of year, I recently purchased a Weber Genesis E-325s grill. I am very pleased with my purchase, although when spending $1,200 on a grill and accessories, it would have been nice to know that the store was going to be celebrating their anniversary with a No Sales Tax Day a few days after my purchase. Nevertheless, my grill was ordered, assembled, delivered and demonstrated in less than one week. Overall, I like this Ace location and am happy to support a local owned business. read more

I am working on small project and needed only a couple things so I figured I would stop here instead of HD since it's closer to me. I was offered assistance by 3 different employees and the lady up front was so sweet! I also found more than what I was expecting! There was one employee that was very helpful and knowledgable on what alternatives could work for my project! He even gave me a couple things like paint can openers and wood blocks for free!! Love Nelson's. I was heart-broken when we lost OSH, but I am so pleasantly surprised to find I like Nelson's even more! The greeters and cashiers are fantastic. And when we need help locating items floor staff doesn't just tell us where to find them, they frequently walk us to them and ask if we need additional help. The products are great quality. Does it cost more than Lowe's? Possibly. But not necessarily. And I would happily pay a little more for service. Also, they were so amazing with my dog as I introduced him into public places and socialized him and always let him know he was a good boy. A disappointment on every level, and I've given it several chances already; would rather take the time and drive a little farther to Home Depot or even Walmart. "Greeter" is friendly and proactive all right-- but unlike OSH, impossible to find any other help on the floor. Stock is poor IMO, merchandise at least 6 times the price of what the chain hardwares charge. Wish it were weren't so, because I prefer supporting our local/small businesses. I started shopping at Ace a while back up at Prather location I lived near. I liked the customer service there and the friendly atmosphere. I moved to Visalia and started using Nelson's and I liked the greetings and offer's for help coming in, but was baffled about how they treated me today. First, I had no idea there was a 30 day max return policy. Everywhere else I shop does not have that. I brought back some pipe fittings I couldn't use, still wrapped and the clerk said she had to call the manager. They called her repeatedly while I waited for about 10 minutes! The manager, Melissa showed up just to tell me no returns after 30 days, see the sign! I never noticed the sign before or I would not have started my project there. There are plenty of other stores to shop that have better policies. I'll pass on Ace now. read more

I'm in Ace about once a week for business needs, and the staff is always friendly, attentive, and points me in the right direction (special shout-out to John!) Phone calls for items back in stock are prompt and followed through. Every time I leave I am always impressed by their customer service. One time I realized I was going to arrive just as the store closed. I called and asked if they would hold a couple items for me. Randy did one better, and he delivered the items right to my business. Staff is friendly enough and the store isn't all that bad. Buuuuuuut DON'T SHOP HERE IF YOU'RE PLANNING AHEAD WITH YOUR PROJECT. I am remodeling my kitchen and purchased garbage disposal that I didn't end up using. Being a full kitchen remodel it was longer than 30 days and I couldn't return the disposal. I fully understand not being able to give me cash back but not at least store credit? For a still fully packaged disposal that you have on your shelves currently? I'm even fine with a 20% restocking fee since you have to sell it open box. But to offer nothing at all is very poor service. I was happy to have someone other than Lowes and Home Depot. But I won't be shopping there again. read more

Irritated that the staff does not follow safety guidelines...and the manager's response is that some of the staff can't breath when wearing a mask. That's not a viable excuse...just stupidity. If a person has a serious and legitimate inability to breathe when wearing a mask properly, they are too impaired to work in a site that requires physical ability. As for following CDC guidelines...no. A mask less staff should not be helping customers while standing next to them or while in the store at all. Go to a real doctor if you can't breath because of a little cloth over your nose and mouth...otherwise it's all in your head! It's gotten so some of the more specialized hardware I need (or want, having gotten it before) just aren't carried by the big box home improvement stores - this last trip to Visalia (RT = 50+ miles) reminded me of why I go to the Visalia Ace Hardware...they had EVERYTHING I wanted! (much of which wasn't available at the other stores) This was true the last time - I wanted a specific Black & Decker item and the other stores seemed to have stopped carrying B&D. Add to that the positive, friendly, staff at this store, and it's well worth the extra fuel costs to go there! read more

All experiences here( 4-6 visits thus far) have been positive. Staff is friendly and helpful from the time you walk in the front door until you get back into your car. Yesterday a salesperson met me in the hardware section, set me up with the carriage bolts I needed, called the checker at the front of the store, and by the time I got there she knew exactly what I was buying and the right amount to charge me. Very Helpful employees. Just went to pick up some vegetables to start my garden and had to get some soil/manure/compost. A kind employee offered to help me load it into a cart, pushed the cart, helped me check out, and loaded it into my car for me. Very helpful as I had my 2 year old with me. Also I was pleasantly surprised by the low prices. The ace store brand was a significant savings vs the name brands that the other stores carry. Will be shopping here exclusively now. read more

I've shopped here many times but I was there last Saturday August 29 around 2pm. There was clearly a sign on the front door asking customers to wear a mask, but out of the dozen or so employees running around I saw one with a mask. How can you ask the public to do what you will not? That's a bad look. Even if you don't agree with a mask policy, asking your customers to do something that you will NOT DO is bad optics. DO NOT take your screen door to have it redone here. I took my screen door to have the screen replaced on it. After watching several videos and two attempts on doing it myself. I decided to take it to Ace Hardware as one video suggested. In all the videos they explained how a screen door/window should be placed on a jig to prevent the frame from being pulled one way or another while installing the screen and spline. First thing I noticed while talking with "Adrian" was this Ace Hardware did not have a jig out on the floor and just had a table with carpet. I assumed they had a jig in the back. Two days later I was told my door was ready. I picked it up and noticed when I got home that it was not square. When I installed it into my door frame I had a two inch gap at the top because it was not square. I took it back and talked to "Adrian." He insisted they did nothing wrong after I explained the importance of a jig. He became argumentative at which time I requested to speak to the manager. The manager "Randy" arrived and "Adrian" continued his explanation they did nothing wrong. "Randy" just stood there and offered no solution. At this point I told "Randy" I was taking my screen door to VISALIA GLASS and if they had to charge me to straighten the door out and re-screen it I would be back with the proof and would demand a refund. "Randy" shrugged his shoulders and said, "OK." VISALIA GLASS owner "John" immediately took me to the back and placed my door in a jig. The door was off from being square by almost 2" inches. He removed the spline, muscled my door back to being square and carefully put the same screen and spline back into the door to save me the cost of replacing the screen. He took 30 minutes of his time and fixed my door and refused to charge me for his work. He shook my hand and asked me to bring him any future screens and they would take care of them for me. This has been true when I was able to go in to the store. It is also my experience now that I am doing on-line and phone orders. They keep me informed about the status of my order and the time of delivery. Mike Nelson, the owner, responded quickly when I was having trouble with an on-line order They have the products I need for garden maintenance and repairs. Their prices are competitive. They give me a Veteran's 10% discount. I joined their Rewards Program which also provides a discount. My five star rating is for this store, If the local staff were not so terrific I would have had a lower rating. The Ace Web site has proved difficult. read more

Decided to buy a bag of potting soil at the posted price of "$10.99," get to the register and the checker tells me it is "$13.99" since I am not an Ace Rewards member. This is my neighborhood hardware store, and up until I checked out today, it was a good experience. Helpful employees -- all except one. I noticed that only about half of both customers and employees were wearing face masks. I avoided the non-mask wearing employees successfully until it was my turn at the cashier. An employee -- not wearing a mask-- came up and stood right next to me, breathing into my face while she spoke to the cashier. Another employee who helped me out to the parking lot (also wearing a mask) said that their employer makes mask wearing optional. I am in a high risk group for COVID, so I will need to reluctantly shop elsewhere until the epidemic is over. read more

Yesterday I began my recovery from spending countless frustrating and dehumanizing hours at the two major corporate home improvement stores by shopping at Nelson's Ace Hardware, formerly Orchard Supply. I was overjoyed to find such a bright, clean, friendly, independently-owned hardware store with outstanding customer service. The dread of needing to go for tools and materials has been replaced by an enormous sense of relief as well as the resolve to never again set foot in either of those cavernous quagmires ever again and I couldn't be happier about it, having had hours, days and weeks over the last eight years robbed from me: getting lost, looking high and low for assistance, settling for whatever they had or else having to give up and try the other big box nightmare, or sitting on hold forever only to be disconnected. So long, Lowe's and Home Depot. By the way I cannot wait until I need to call ahead to see if they have something in stock at Ace, because I'm positive they will answer the phone, and I will not spend anything close to an hour trying to reach the right person. Granted, this was only my first trip there, but because of their professionalism and great customer service I am inspired, even excited, to do even more home restoration and maintenance projects myself, because it's not going to take a day and a half to round up materials and another day and a half returning things because I couldn't get any help or advice or because I was too exhausted from walking up and down and around those stupid cluttered aisles finding bonehead after bonehead who could only point in a vague general direction as they scurried along to go be not-helpful somewhere else and would end up purchasing unnecessary items maybe because I didn't want to leave empty-handed after walking a mile. I apologize to the small handful of associates who really have been friendly and great but those people were truly exceptional--very, very few and far between, and I was shocked to find them. I think there are probably a lot of great people working at those places but possibly the whole set-up is not geared for people who came up in a different era before the corporatocracy really took over and the customer was considered to be important and even made to feel that way. I am not really blaming the employees because poor customer service usually starts at the top. Unfortunately in the corporate stores there's not much accountability. But anyway I'm done with them and I look forward to making many runs to Nelson's Ace Hardware in Visalia, as my list of home restoration projects is, I'm afraid, endless. I live in Alaska and my 74 year old mom lives in Visalia. The stay put due to Corona virus has been hard on her. I called Nelson's Ace Hardware to buy a flat of annuals for her to plant in her yard and busy herself over the next weeks. Debbie Fleming from the nursery took my call. "We can help! We have lovely flowers! We can safely get them to her," she said. And then she realized the problem...Ace Hardward doesn't take credit cards over the phone. A moment on hold and Debbie was back, "We at Nelson's Ace Hardware would like to donate a flat of flowers to your mom since you are so far away. What flowers shall we add? And I can deliver them too!" How amazing is that! What amazing customer service!!! What thoughtfulness and generosity. I was in tears. And when the flowers arrived at my mom's house, she was in tears. She said they are the most beautiful flowers she has ever seen.
