Very Puerto Rican, full of culture and a friendly staff. I did the buffet brunch and here's the good and the bad: Coconut oatmeal with cinnamon is my absolute favorite. Must try! The omelettes were great. The chef makes them right at the buffet and you can choose the ingredients. The quesitos were delicious. Plantains were a bit dry and so were the pancakes. The fruit didn't seem fresh. It's a smaller sized buffet so don't expect too many optopns, you'll be full regardless. read more

Nellie's - The oatmeal and omelettes were the highlights of the meal. - Breakfast & Brunch Near Me - Chicago, Illinois

Pablo, his wife, and his wonderful staff catered my wedding. I cannot say enough good things about the food, staff, and service! First, I'll start with the process of coordinating their catering for our wedding. They were incredibly responsive to our inquiry, returning phone calls immediately or putting Pablo on the line right away after we called. Because we had a short timeline from which we got engaged to our wedding date, their promptness in getting the ball rolling was a huge plus in their favor. My husband and I had never been to Nellie's before (and live out of state), but their reviews and professionalism assuaged any of our concerns. We scheduled a tasting for when we were in town, and the food came out fast, it was delicious, and they gave us generous portions to sample. They even brought out one or two more dishes for us to sample apart from what we were originally eyeing on the menu, which was a really nice gesture. We decided on the roast pork, shrimp and chicken empanadas, bacalao, pigeon pea rice, plantains, and flan. I couldn't stop eating the plantains, they were so good. And my Dominican-born, Puerto Rican-raised mother-in-law, who joined us to weigh in on the food, was thrilled with the authenticity of the food. Pablo was also super responsive in answering our concerns about allergens/dietary restrictions, so we could add that information to our menu for our guests. He was a pro at identifying which food was vegetarian, gluten free, and dairy free. Pablo was such a professional that he even toured our venue before the day to get familiar with the layout. His staff were SO friendly, congratulating us on the day of. They wore clean, coordinated polos at our reception, and they served each of us in the buffet with a smile. I was really impressed! They also packed up to-go boxes (that we had purchased in advance) for our guests, and so many people took home leftovers and cake. I was impressed by the staff's foresight to pack up the food on behalf of our guests so that no one would hesitate to take home some food for the next day. BTW, the food was just as good reheated the next day! And our guests were incredibly impressed by our food. Food was my number one concern at the wedding--more so than decorations, my dress, etc. My husband and I come from two cultures that like to eat, so we wanted excellent food and great service. We received rave reviews about the bacalao, especially. So many people came up to us, raving about various dishes (the pork, the plantains, someone even complimented us on how great the salad was!). My friend, who is pregnant and craving caramel, was thrilled that we had flan on our dessert table. My husband commented, and his cousins agreed, that the flan was better than his abuela's (they noted this out of earshot of her, don't worry). The Dominican/Puerto Ricans, my Italian side of the family, and our American friends all raved about the food, so I'm happy to report that Nellie's is a crowd pleaser no matter your cultural background. The food was also incredibly reasonably priced. One of my friends got engaged the day after our wedding, and she immediately wanted to know who our caterer was as she said our food was the best she'd ever had at a wedding. When I told her about Nellie's and the price of our final catering bill, she couldn't believe that we received such great food at such a great price. Really, I cannot rave about Nellie's enough! If you're in need of catering for your event, give Pablo a call. read more

Breakfast at Nellie's was great! The reviews don't do their breakfast potatoes Justice - they are delicious - amply sprinkled with onion and seasoned perfectly. My omelet was the most delicious one I've had in a long time. Most of all, you feel like you've been transported to San Juan. read more

Today was my first visit. 12:00 noon on Thursday. Although the restaurant was not "packed", I noticed there were quite a few large carry out orders. It did take them a reasonable amount of time to bring the food. Not fast but not slow and expected for a restaurant that serves delicious food at lunch time. The ambiance reminded me of the Dominican Republic. Loved it. Simple. The food was Delicious! Served quickly after preparing. I had their special Tortilla Boricua which is an open faced omlet. I asked to substitute toast and was offered a delicious bowl of fruit. The service was great. If you need something, ask for it with a smile. This is a lesson in life that well take you a long way. Relax! Also, consider avoiding the weekend lunch buffet if you do not like crowded, busy, delicious restaurants! THE OATMEAL....... ! I'm definitely coming back for the Mofongo! read more

I enjoy the food here. They have the best oatmeal you could ever have. Highly recommended! Guys try their great desserts

Best. I'm from NYC and I'm Puertorican. Believe me when I say the last thing I expected in Chicago was good comida criolla. They bring it. The ambiance is warm and celebratory of the culture art and people of the island. The service is attentive and accommodating. And the breakfast buffet has everything you could want. It is super authentic and probably my favorite restaurant so far in Chicago...and I ate at Gibson's the other night. What a lovely meal! read more

Was excited to try this place. Heard the coconut oatmeal was amazing and it was! The rest of the food was just ok. Fruit didn't look fresh at all and we were served dirty glasses. The chairs were stained and gross and the restaurant had a weird non food odor to it. The bathrooms were disgusting to say the least. The buffet was way overpriced for the quality of the food. Came here with my kids and they enjoyed the oatmeal like myself but we'd never come back. read more

Horrible service. Server was unprofessional was on his phone the whole time had to literally flag him down to get anything. Food took 10 years to come out. The Pancakes were cold and nasty. We asked them to take it off our bill but they refused. Literally won't ever come back here. read more

Situation: Getting off night shift and craving a jibarito early in the morning. Called in, placed an order to go. Staff: Walked in, greeted by staff, overall friendly encounter. Food: Steak jibarito and arroz con gandules. Amazing! The food smelled so good I got home and devoured it right away. I didn't think I'd be able to finish the whole thing, but it tasted so good I finished it all in one sitting. Hands down one of the best jibaritos I've had so far. Going back? Definitely. read more

Stay away!!!! Went with my mom because she recommended the coco oatmeal and the Jibarito bowl. We waited for more than 30mins to get our food and when it finally arrived it was such a disappointment. The meat had no flavor, very dry. The arroz con gandules looked so pale, tasted terrible and tasted old. The banana of the Jibarito was so soggy didn't taste fresh and wasn't crunchy. My moms Jibarito bowl, the lettuce had black pieces in it and the meat was just slapped on it looked so gross not even my dog would eat it. We couldn't even finish the food and paid so much for it. The only good thing was the coco oatmeal. Worst Jibarito I have ever had. One of the waitresses had cadi b nails. Disgusting cuz as a server you shouldn't have long nails like that it's unsanitary. read more

Today I had the pleasure of dining at a Puerto Rican Restaurant that's only opens for breakfast and lunch and I have to say that it's refreshing to dine at a local eatery that makes you feel welcomed. Nellie's is a neighborhood gem where regulars go get a delicious home style cooked meal and where newbies like myself can go for the first time and they treat you as if you're family. Today I had the pleasure of dining on Chicharion de Pollo (Puerto Rican style chicken) with yellow rice and peas, my friend had a more interesting meal, she ate Chicken Jibarito (chicken sandwich with fried plantains instead of bread). This food was amazing and I can't wait to go back for the breakfast read more

Bro I love nellies sm... I am deadass gonna order a gallon of the coconut oatmeal next week

Had the jabarito bowel today it was truly delicious. The staff is always great. Great food on a cold day

The food was fantastic! A 5 star! I will qualify that I went the day of the Puerto Rican Day parade and they were busier than normal but it was a 2 hour wait from being seated to getting the food. I mostly was okay because you couldn't get a better seat to watch the parade. The waiter, who was very nice, just forgot pieces of the order and then would disappear. One would hope that they anticipate the crowds and staff accordingly. The long wait was explained by not having enough fryers to handle the food that was ordered. I bet it's better on a not so busy day. I will go back! read more

It was my first time coming here along with my boyfriend & we will be definitely coming back! The restaurant is beautifully decorated and the staff is very friendly. I ordered a jibarito and cafe con leche while my bf ordered a media noche. We've been to a few Puerto Rican restaurants in the city and I must say that this is by far 1 of my favorite ones. The sandwich isn't super big so it doesn't give you that feeling of being super full and it was very delicious!! The waiter had recommended to order the oatmeal bc it's one of their well known plates, but we politely declined. Although we didn't order the oatmeal he still brought us over a small sample to try, which was very kind of him. There was a bit of a wait for the food, which is why I knocked down a star, but otherwise I love everything about this place!! read more

Sunday, November 11th at 10:00AM David (my boyfriend): I have a surprise for you. Me: OH really? *shifty eyes* David: I got a Groupon for Nellie's. Let's go to get brunch! Me: Oh, okay... I thought it wasn't much of a surprise. Going out to eat is a regular weekend activity for us. Plus, brunch is just eggs and carbs. I wasn't expecting much at Nellie's, a casual Puerto Rican restaurant in Humboldt Park. It must be average. I was COMPLETELY wrong. Like, 1 + 1 = Zebra wrong. We arrived at 11:00AM. The wait was 30 minutes. Yikes. This was the result of the Groupon. The neighborhood is desolate, so there's nothing we could do but wait. The hostess was very sweet though; she is the daughter of the owner. When we were finally seated, I saw that the waitstaff used the cool iPhone ordering system to take our orders. I have never seen those in a restaurant in Chicago (only on Gordon Ramsey's Kitchen Nightmares)! That is pretty damn nifty. I ordered the El Coqui Scrambled Eggs ($8.50) and side of Plantains ($2.75) and David had the Breakfast Buffet ($14.99). The menu is pretty vegetarian-friendly. Anyway, I didn't see the buffet area in the back, but David told me it is impressive. Some Yelper mentioned that it was small, but it is not. For a buffet, you get a good selection: sausage, bacon, pancakes, french toast, omelettes (you can choose the fillings), fresh fruit, and ... Avena de Coco. Coconut Oatmeal. I had only one spoonful of it. My boyfriend is a stickler to rules and didn't want me to "mooch" off his cup of oatmeal and cheat the restaurant, even though I just wanted to have ONE more spoonful to determine whether or not I like it. (He's difficult like that.) I think my opinion on the oatmeal are fuzzy, since I only had about a teaspoon of it. It's good, although a little watery. It needed more oatmeal. I'm not sure what's all the big fuss is about with this oatmeal. It's good, but not THAT GOOD. David ordered orange juice (fresh squeezed), and it was also taking a very, very long time to come out. As I watched David eat his food, I started to wonder what was taking so long for his orange juice. Me: Maybe they are HAND-squeezing your orange juice specially for you, David! *some time later* Me: Maybe they are importing the oranges from Brazil JUST for you, David! *some more time later* Me: Maybe they are growing the oranges JUST for you, David! It turns out that the orange juice was freshly squeeze as they didn't start serving it to everyone until later. I assume that there was a delay in the orange juice because someone had to squeeze the oranges. My food also took forever to come out. I also started to believe that they went to get the eggs from the grocery store, then the farm, then actually raising the chickens. It was taking a very, very long time for my food. You'd be surprised that I didn't mind it one bit. You gotta be understand the circumstance they're in. (I wasn't that hungry anyway.) When my food finally arrived, I was extremely pleased with what I received: - Breakfast potatoes: Mashed baked potatoes with skin still on. SO GOOD!! - Wheat toast: Thick slices of multigrain bread. Not the cheap crap! - Plantains: Caramelized and sliced. - Scrambled eggs: Fluffy and PERFECTLY cooked with slightly mashed slices of avocado on top. I actually prefer this over the pretty slices of avocado. It's easier to mix the avocado in with the eggs. I was so happy. I had the eggs with Nellie's hot sauce, which is pretty damn spicy. Word of caution: It's very watery, so it'll pour right out of the bottle. Be careful. Our brunch was a very long brunch, but it was the best brunch I had in a long time. I have paid more money for mediocre dishes with lower quality ingredients elsewhere. Nellie's is extremely reasonably-priced for the quality and quantity you get, and everyone there was friendly. The artwork was impressive as well. Again, we didn't care about the wait at all. We had a good time regardless! Nellie's really took me by surprise. I am very happy to discover such a wonderful, charming place. This place is full of win and 5-stars. PS: Parking is free on Sundays until 4pm! read more

I'm not a breakfast person, but this meal made me a believer. The proof? It's in the pudding... er, oatmeal! The deets on Nellie's Breakfast Special: Cup of coconut oatmeal sprinkled with cinnamon. Aka 'heaven in a bowl'. A huge, fluffy omelet bursting with goodies such as peppers, onions, cheese, and ham. AND it's topped with sliced plantains, and served with garlicky toasted bread. All of this? Less than $9. Parking is easy, the service is swell and the coffee is a-ok. Can't wait to come back for the Puerto Rican buffet... worth every last calorie I'm sure! read more

I profusely thank Silver Cloud for being packed for brunch on Sunday. Reason being? Since we were on a mission to find an alternative brunch spot, we were led to the Humboldt Park gem that is Nellie's. The all-day breakfast was super appealing and so were the cheap prices (i.e., $2.50 for an egg and cheese sandwich, what?). Since my friend and I were basically starving by the time we got there, we decided to indulge in the $15 buffet. Why not, right? The buffet featured some delicious bacon. My friend can attest as he seemed to pile strips on his plate. There was also waffles, french toast, oatmeal (w/coconut milk + cinnamon), maduros, bread, fruit, flan and that ground beef, cheese, plantain item. I'm not sure what it's called, but it was probably one of the best items. What really amused me about this buffet was the ever-so-cute man manning the omelet station. As it's a made to order station, I picked out my ingredients (spinach, mushrooms, onions, cheddar cheese). Somehow, though, I don't think the man was too keen on my choices and started adding in his own ingredients. I saw him throw in some adobo seasoning, some hot peppers, a different type of cheese...and, let me tell you - that was the most delicious omelet I've ever had in my entire life! The combo of flavors was fabulous! Genius! Not to mention the fact that I felt like I could not deny trying any of the items if he recommended them. He was THAT precious. I loved the warm, friendly, family-style environment here. It's such a nice change of pace from the pretentious, crowded brunch places. Nice satisfying meal, hands down. Gotta tell my friends in the 'hood. It'll be their new favorite, too... read more

Nellie's - Breakfast & Brunch Near Me - Chicago, Illinois

Nellie won't have the same meaning for me anymore. Up until today, this name was conjuring up images of a rich blond pest, with silly curls, an obnoxious voice, an even more obnoxious mom who was trying to run the little village of Walnut Grove from her general store. Yes, that's right. I am talking about Nellie Olson, and yes, "Little House in the Prairie" did air on French TV, more times than I can count on my hands. But now this nightmare vision has been replaced by the cozy and surprisingly looking (think along the lines of an English medieval dining hall with wood beams, and 'rams' and 'ewes' signs on the bathroom doors) dining room of this little Puerto Rican breakfast place. It doesn't look like much, but it's a nice little surprise. And a tasty one indeed. For $8.50 we got the Nellie's breakfast special: coffee, a cup of the yummiest, creamiest, most decadent coconut oatmeal I have ever had and a big Puerto Rican omelet filled with peppers, tomato, local salami, cheese and plantains. It comes with three big slices of warm, toasted bread brushed with garlic.............and it's absolutely decadent. I ate the whole thing, and was almost still hungry for more. Service was pretty indifferent but efficient, and on a Sunday at 11:30 we didn't have to wait. Do yourself a favor, and go check it out. For the big eaters out there, they also offer a great buffet for $14.95. Not to be missed!! read more

I literally must have died and gone to oatmeal heaven. Yes fellow Yelpers, what they have been saying is true. This place has the best oatmeal you will ever have in your life... or after-life! But let me back up to the start. My friend and I tried Nellie's based on Yelp reviews. We arrived around 12:30pm to find a decent amount of people waiting for tables. I have to be honest here...they are kinda disorganized in terms of their seating logistics. We waited a long time to get seated, and we were frustrated along w/everyone else in line. There were many open tables left empty before anyone was sitting down. Or tables that weren't bused in time. But small details...it certainly was worth the wait. And we made friends w/people waiting in line. On the weekends they have a $14 buffet and you are a FOOL if you do not get it. The deliciousness included: Amazing house made potatoes, puerto rican huevos, bacon, sausage, chicken, puerto rican rice, out of this world oatmeal, french toast, pancakes, and a made to order omelet station. Okay, the guy running the omelet station is like my favorite new man on Earth. He is so friendly and so fun to chat to while waiting for your delicious omelet to cook. The buffet cost also includes coffee and orange juice. WHAT A YUMMY DEAL! Although we had to wait for a while, I have to say hats off to the entire staff. These people are the NICEST people. It's a family owned restaurant and they really go out of their way to make sure you have a good experience. And they don't rush you in and out. Okay, now I have to go take a nap. See you next weekend Nellie! read more

The main reason why I drop $15 for their all-you-can-eat brunch buffet is for their pastelone de huevos. Seriously delicious pan of eggs mixed with a somewhat odd assortment of various vegetables and ground beef. Super simple dish that is a perfect mixture of sweet and savory. Sweetness mainly coming from the maduros (sweet plantains) which makes this better than pretty much any other egg casserole out there. There are other things on the buffet, such as your standardized American pancakes and french toast, but I stay away from that and stick with huge helpings of the above mentioned dish, the avena de coco (coconut oatmeal), the Puerto Rican style fried chicken (chopped, bone and all, into small pieces and fried crispy), and maduros. Stick with the Puerto Rican food here. It really is very good. If the pastelone de huevos really isn't satisfying your egginess enough, saddle on up to the omelet maker and have him cook up a made-to-order omelet for you. About the only thing that I really missed having the chance to eat on the brunch line to complete my Puerto Rican feast would be a nice helping of mofongo. While you're at it, check out the art on the walls. My favorite piece: Buddy Jesus and his Harley Davidson (not sure if that is the real name of it). read more

I was so tempted to stay in the area so I could order off the lunch menu later in the day. That's how much I loved the breakfast at Nellie's. A group of us came in for breakfast on a Sunday. They were almost empty when we arrived at 930 (yeah we like to start the day early on Sundays sometimes) but by the time we left, the restaurant was full with a line of folks waiting to be seated. My husband and I went with the Breakfast Buffet--it was the best way to sample some things on the menu and plus, kids under 3 eat for free! The two others in our group went with the breakfast special and omelet and both looked really good. There is quite a lot to choose from in their buffet--Pastelone de Huevos (which is like an egg strata, with a layer of ground beef and plantains) breakfast potatoes, bacon, sausage links, pancakes, french toast, an omelet station, Maduros (sweet plantains), fresh fruit and the Avena de Coco (the famous coconut oatmeal dusted with cinnamon). There's also fried chicken and arroz con gandules. My husband and I split an omelet we had made at the omelet station. We ordered what was basically the omelet in the breakfast special. An open faced omelet seasoned with sofrito, cheese, tomatoes, onions, green peppers, salchion sausage and maduros. It was fantastic. Very flavorful and well-made. The oatmeal was not like any other oatmeal I've had, it was very creamy and filling. The coconut milk adds so much richness and flavor. Perfect comfort food. My other favorites of the buffet include the little pieces of fried chicken. So crispy on the outside but very tender on the inside. And the plantains--a bit sticky from the carmelization, not overly sweet either. And they use fresh ripe plantains so no hint of bland/bitterness. Service was so friendly and anticipated our needs. Our server was funny and kept us entertained by his jokes and friendly banter. Our coffee cups never went empty and water glasses were always filled. read more

So there are occasions that I want a pretty standard "greasy spoon" style breakfast. Some eggs, some bacon and some pancakes. Is that too much to ask for without having to cart my butt to cozy corner? Apparently it is, because each time I try to go to CC the line is out the door. Not the case at Nellie's, there's usually no wait. Service is minimal but good. Despite my general disdain for oatmeal the coconut oatmeal is the best that I've had. My companion enjoyed his Puerto Rican omelet with chorizo and plantains. And of course, if you can't decide and just want it all, a breakfast buffet is served for about $15/person. read more

Support local businesses!!!! We came here on a Sunday for the Brunch buffet, 9am-3pm for $14.99. At first I felt a little disappointed. To me, the buffet offering was lacking - maybe only about 10 entrees altogether. The American staples were bacon, sausage, french toast, waffle, homestyle potatoes. The Puerto Rican complements was a dish that seemed like a ground beef omelet topped with sweet plantains and melted cheese (delicious), slightly flavored coconut oatmeal and sweet plantains. Fresh fruit and bit size Flan topped off dessert. A made to order omelet station was also a nice touch. After eating at Lasalle Power Company the weekend before for their Brunch Buffet for only $10 and twice as many entrees, I was still feeling a little buyer's remorse. However, after talking with Pablo and Cindy, the young husband and wife duo that own and run the place, I changed my mind completely. The place is relatively new (~3 years) which is why at the time I've written this review there were only 12 other reviews. Regardless, the two were more than willing to share their story, the amazing art on the walls (and history lessons to boot!) and that the restaurant is named after Cindy's late mother. What struck me most was that they were humble enough to say it's been rough owning a restaurant - something that most of us probably wouldn't be able to comprehend. Their restaurant is their livelihood as much as our 9 to 5s pay our bills. However if that fails, they might not have the luxury of a degree or work experience to fall back on. That's why it was easy to be symphathetic. So with this review, I would like everyone to go out and try it. Don't get me wrong, I'm not advocating it solely because I feel sorry for them; the food is pretty darn good and speaks for itself. I'm just saying it's nice to feel that your patronage to a place actually goes farther than one would think. Also, the free refills on coffee (and get this) orange juice definitely makes up for the price. Some breakfast places will charge you $5 just for the orange juice. Better yet, I assume it was part of the buffet deal because we weren't charged anything extra. Overall, I highly recommend you support Pablo and Cindy's shop. They are more than accommodating with your requests and all you need to do is ask and they'll share everything they got. Tip: The artwork on the walls are for sale and Cindy also has smaller prints you can purchase for cheaper. read more

This has got to be the most underrated breakfast in all of Chicago Best groupon deal we purchased in all of 2012. Who can beat omelette station, Puerto Rican fried chicken AND coconut cinnamon oatmeal! No one. Crispy fried bacon, sausage, French toast. Oh, and BYOB for your own mixed bellinis and screwdrivers. You know what? the food is good, but there are way too many restaurants you could go to where you DON'T have to wait forever for your food to get ready. They're pretty nice, except the one chick that isn't (you'll get her, don't worry) The eggs were done right and tasty, the arroz con gandules pretty good too -but this IS the kinda joint you go into where they don't give you refills on coffee, because they forget...one of those places you just want to get the check and leave. Take that money and cook breakfast at home, you aren't missing anything by not going here. read more

I have been to Nellie's multiple times and even though I don't mind going there I am also not a huge fan. I usually "create my own omelette" so its not like I get anything fancy or special. The thing I am not a huge fan are the potatoes that come with the omelette... they are just huge chunks of boiled potato with sazon (seasoning). My mom got their famous coconut oatmeal and tostada criolla which she loves. I mean the oatmeal is good but it's nothing out of this world BUT I am also not a huge oatmeal fan. There is also a buffet option however I have never done it but it seems like its typical breakfast food (eggs, fruit, pancakes, sausages, etc). Service is always great... the people who work there are very attentive and ask multiple times if everything is ok. I usually end up here if I am in the area but I would not wait too long for a table since I did see it gets very crowded over the weekend. read more
