These donuts are so good I now get angry when served inferior donuts. I'm looking at you, Dunkin'. The Boston cream is incredible, with custard spread liberally between two halves and covered with rich delicious chocolate. The glazed are ideal. Make no mistake about it. I didn't NEED a donut. It wasn't morning. I had already eaten lunch. I wasn't hungry. But around Saturday 1:48 pm, as I was getting ready to curve from 91 South to the Merritt for unrelated reasons, I said to myself, "Maybe I could make it to Neil's Donuts before they close at 2. And maybe I can't." As Barney Stinson used to say in HIMYM, "Challenge accepted!" My admiration for Neil's Donuts is well professed on their Middletown Yelp page and I won't repeat it here. I will say this though - I made it to Neil's Donuts. Walked through the door at 1:58. Customers were there when I got there, and customers came after. And there were slim pickings. There was some apple-filled stuff. Some glazed sprinkled. Cinnamon crumb. I opted for a glazed sprinkle and a cinnamon crumb. I ate 2/3 of the cinnamon crumb over the next several hours. If you're wondering why the line is out the door, it's because the donuts are incredible! And they sell out fast! This unassuming, rather tiny, old fashioned, "hole" in the wall bake shop is nothing to look at and I thought it could use a bit of a facelift. (You won't give a hoot about the interior once you taste the goods!) We came a day prior to our visit and they ran out of donuts! It was close to closing time when we arrived and we could find nary a crumb, we were bummed! So the next day we got here extra early and stood in the long line! It was pretty hectic! There were about 6 or 7 employees, shouting "Next, can I help you?" and boxing up dozens of donuts, coffee cakes, muffins, cookies and other delectable bakery goods like there was no tomorrow! The coffee was flowing and the shop smelled delicious!! To my pleasant surprise, the line went by pretty quickly and I was amazed by the accurate and friendly service. It was rather loud and crazy in there, but those servers were on it! The selection was awesome, so many choices. I called out my order... "and a key lime filled, a chocolate glazed, a Boston cream, a strawberry sprinkled..." and soon my dozen was complete! I was handed to box and it was heavy!! These are some hearty donuts! We dug in and sunk our teeth into these moist, fresh, dense cakes donuts and couldn't stop saying "Mmmmm"! My hubby grew up in CT and we were visiting from VA, so the box of donuts gave us a sugar fix for our road trip home! There aren't any donut shops like this in my area! I am SO GLAD that I have FINALLY made it down to Neils! Everybodyyyyyyyy keep talking about them and I've been missing out. Til now. My husband and I road tripped down to Wallingford for some donuts and coffee and wow was I excited. I will say the shop is loud so be prepared to yell your order to the employees there. My coffee was delish but a little sugary, so I know next time to ask them to go light on the sugar and cream. But the donuts. I now get the hype because I swear that fryer grease has magic in it. Great donuts. $13 for a half dozen (2 each of the glazed, Samoa and Boston Cream) plus a HUGE cinnamon sugar coffee roll. I came here on Saturday morning at around 9 AM and the place was packed. But they have plenty of staff to fulfill your orders so the line moves very quickly. The Wallingford store is only a 5 minute drive from the Route 15 off ramp so I'll be stopping again here on my future trips up to Boston. read more

Some of the best donuts in CT! Whenever I want to treat my coworkers, I bring in a box of a dozen Neil's Donuts to work and everybody always raves about how good they are. My personal favorite is the cinnamon/sugar donut- not too sweet, but still delicious. I'm not really a coffee drinker, but their flavored coffees are also really good. And they brew their flavored iced coffee, rather than adding syrup for flavoring, so you don't have the added sugar. Neil's also makes an awesome bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich on a hard roll. If you go on a Friday, Saturday, or Sunday morning, expect the line to be out the door. The parking lot can also get a little crazy sometimes with people going in and out. Overall, amazing donuts! Their 5 star ratings say a lot about their quality. I have no clue how did I miss the place all these years until I noticed these positive reviews here in Yelp. I couldn't believe it after trying the place for the first time. They are so delicious, the best in the CT, period. To me personally, it is even more special as half of their donuts are vegan. Just simply the best. I'm always amazed when I stop in there - old building, and not the greatest parking lot but the donuts are indescribable. The Boston Cream is my favorite but they're all good. What amazes me about this place is the line can literally be out the door but you're waited on within a couple of minutes. During their busy time they'll have 12 - 14 people working behind the counter even though it looks like it can only fit a few people. I have no idea how it functions but it does - best donuts ANYWHERE and the best service as well. If you're looking to start a small business, head to Neil's and just observe how it works with a dozen of people in a small place waiting on customers. They know how to make donuts but they also know how to get great help and train them and how many restaurants can you say that about. There's a reason they sell up to 3,500 - 4,000 donuts on a busy day. The one negative is they've ruined other donuts for me! I just can't eat Dunkin Donuts or basically any other donuts anymore after eating these. They're that good. read more

I've been a Wallingford native for couple decades now and by far, Neil's is the best bakery/breakfast shop in town. My husband stopped by this morning to grab us some breakfast sandwiches - I got the croissant with ham and eggs while he got a sausage, egg, and cheese. The croissant was just the right amount of buttered and flaky, just enough ham and just enough eggs for a protein-riched meal. My husband can say the same about his sandwich! The shop has been pretty good about their COVID-19 precautions. Only a certain number of customers can enter the shop at a time (I believe it's one person per group) and you're supposed to stand on their taped markers. Unfortunately, people still come in small groups so you'll see some parties awkwardly huddled around a little marker. I'm happy that Neil's is at least trying their best to regulate the health and safety of their customers and staff. If you order a donut or a coffee, everything is like how it generally is. However, if you order a hot sandwich or whatever meal that requires some prepping, the staff will ask you to stay in your car and they will hand-deliver the item to you. What could be better than a Saturday morning donut run, seeing stocked shelves of delicious donuts and served by great staff? I got a dozen (2 of each) - old fashioned plain, apple crumb, Boston cream, French toast, Oreo and chocolate glazed. Each one was fresh, tasty and not *overly* sweet or crazy. They're also massive so I like leaving a plastic knife in the box and having smaller pieces of each. The donuts + a medium iced coffee came out to be $15 which is super reasonable pricing! I got a cinnamon donut that was on par with 80% of the cinnamon donuts I've had in Connecticut. And thats pretty much all they had... Here's the thing, I can go to any Krispy Kreme in NYC and get at least 50% of their offerings at any one time. In a nutshell, I can't recommend this place. Your supply chain precluded it. While I am sitting here in the parking lot at 1 pm, customers are pulling up and seeing you have nothing and leaving. At least half a dozen customers in 8 minutes. Doesn't seem like your supply chain is adequately servicing your business model. So I have no idea how good or bad the specialty donuts are here because I'm not waking up at the crack of dawn to get them and the store does not have them while I am here. Tiny place that is perfect for grabbing donuts and coffee in a rush. Not only do they have a ton of different varieties of donuts, they also have an incredible amount of different coffee flavors (both hot and iced) + other massive pastry items (muffins, bagels, croissants, etc). Apparently they also have breakfast sandwiches, but I didn't see a list of them anywhere when I visited. There were a lot of people when I came, but the staff was incredibly efficient so there was no wait at all. I definitely recommend knowing what you want before you go to the counter however, as you are fairly rushed when it is your turn to order. I got a glazed donut, a samoas donut, and a salted caramel iced coffee on my visit. The positives were that the coffee and the flavoring on the samoas donuts were fantastic, however the negatives were that the donut quality itself tasted pretty generic/close to what you would get from Dunkin. Neil's Donuts is a classic donut shop and pastry bakery that opened in Wallingford, Connecticut in 2001. It was founded by Neil Bukowksi. Originally a salesman, Bukowski was often charged with bringing refreshments to meetings. He was unsatisfied with the quality of pastries that he would usually find. He felt that all of the big-name commercial coffee and donut businesses were lacking in quality, so he decided to leave his sales job and open his own donut shop in the Yalesville section of town. The donut shop has a retro 1950s-inspired logo which recalls the beginnings of the fast food movement in America. Neil's offers quality donuts, pastries, danishes, muffins, breakfast sandwiches, and other baked goods as well as a wide selection of coffee. All baked goods are made fresh on the premises from all-natural ingredients. A second location opened in Middletown in October 2020; that location is run by Neil's son Rob. I stopped by the original Neil's Donuts location this past weekend. I've heard great things about them for years but never made it there until now. The day before, I picked up the brand new "Neil's French Toast Donut Stout" from Front Porch Brewing Company. The beer was a collaboration between the two businesses and brewed with a generous amount of Neil's French toast donuts. I thought that it would be nice to get some donuts to pair with the beer. I stopped in shortly after 8:00 AM and the place was packed. Fortunately, Neil's is well-staffed and the line moves quickly. The place smelled so good and I was so impressed by their wide selection of donuts. I ordered half a dozen: Old Fashioned Cinnamon, Blueberry Cake, French Toast, Samoa, Oreo, and Chocolate Lemon. These were some of the best donuts my family and I ever tasted!! The French toast donut paired well with the stout beer, but my favorite of all the donuts was the Chocolate Lemon! I had Neil's for the first time a few weeks ago. A woman I work with lives close, and will occasionally stop on her way to work to bring them in as a treat. The first time I had one - a Boston cream - the donut was hard and left an oily taste on my tongue (it was 8:30 am on a Friday - so shouldn't have been old). I am a sucker for Boston cream donuts. Sooooo...when my colleague brought them in again this past Friday, I ate a half. Well - it was DELICIOUS. Doughy, sweet, airy - the chocolate smooth and creamy, with a delicious custard filling. Not sure what happened the first time, but the owner should take into consideration that his donuts are clearly not perfect. And there may be times when his donuts just aren't good (hence the occasional poor review). Neil's is our family's favorite donut shop. The lines on the weekend can be rather long. You can usually expect a wait ranging from 5 minutes to twenty minutes or longer. Parking can sometimes be difficult, so get here early. Here's a tip: Pull in on the right (of the building), if you don't find parking, drive behind the building and park on the other side. The shop is small. No fancy seating here. Even standing room is hard to find. They accept cash or credit cards. Tips are appreciated...the crew works hard and deserve their tips! Neil's does donuts, but they also do baked goods too! Their donuts are on the larger side. We love the traditional ones, but we always end up getting at least one "fun" one. The Boston Cream is a sandwich style, not the piped in type that other chains sell. I'm a big fan of their Pumpkin, it's so much better than the ones that the sell at Dunkin! I came here the long way from Long Island, New York on the recommendation of my main man Daym Drops, known here on Yelp as Daym P. The hysterical and informative YouTube video in his "Best reviewed _____ in my state (CT)" series (in this case, donut shop) was enough for me to hop in the car and make a special day trip! Alright, let's get to it - tale of the tape: Breakfast Bagel Sandwich Prepared fresh, and though very satisfying, I'd have enjoyed it more if it were toasted up proper. Donuts I tried a number of their donuts, from my visit and that of a friend who went to Connecticut to visit family and stopped by Neil's at my recommendation. These include Apple Cider, Blueberry Cake, Chocolate Creme, Cinnamon Stick, Double Chocolate, Glazed, and Key Lime. All were fresh and definitely worth the trip! A few of the stand-outs include: Boston Crème This could be the best donut in the whole bakery. The vanilla custard is rich and creamy, the chocolate is rich and chocolatey, the donut itself is soft and fresh . . . it's truly everything you want in a Boston Crème donut! If you want to try it, you'll either have to get there early, or call the day before and add it to your dozen for them to have ready whenever you get there. Lemon Chocolate Stick This one was a surprise - I liked it more than I thought I would . . . If you can get it, grab at least one! Peanut Butter Crumb Soft donut with vanilla frosting, sprinkled with crushed peanut butter cups. Frankly, this one was disappointing. I expected peanut butter filling, or sauce, or something. Unfortunately, this is not the peanut butter donut you're looking for . . . Pumpkin This seasonally available donut is fine, but that's just my opine. I was never necessarily a fan of pumpkin this or that (except pie), as I've always generally found pumpkin to have something of a bland taste. Double Chocolate Coffee Cake A large upside-down bundt coffee cake with Neil's signature chocolate ganache and chocolate crumbs on top. Not as chocolatey as I wanted it to be, it is nonetheless a good deal for the price. Conclusion Since I started this review over a year ago (!), Neil's has opened a second location in Middletown, CT, about 14 miles northeast of their flagship bakery in Wallingford. I first had Neil's in 2015 when a coworker of mine would bring them to work on special occasions. These are some of the best donuts you can find in CT and they are a no frills approach to what a donut should be. Forget the crazy toppings and Instagram setting, here it is all about the donut. I personally prefer the yeast-based kind and they have plenty here which satisfy that craving. Make sure to get any of their filled donuts as they do NOT skimp on the filling. Evert donut is fantastic, cake donuts are the perfect crunchy exterior and soft sweet interior, the yeast raised donuts equal in awesomeness the texture is phenomenal as you bite it immediately feels like it starts to melt in your mouth and the filled donuts.....for those of you who have been here there is no need for explanation and for those who haven't, what are you waiting for?
