Love this place. I've been using acupuncture to deal with the main effects of a major grief and loss on my body. Joanne and the other practitioners here are wonderful. Acupuncturists have a good understanding of how integrated our mind and body systems are and use pressure points to relieve pressure on those systems through needles. The effect is positive. You also get to relax and just be with your thoughts. There aren't many occasions in the modern world where you can take this type of time out from the world. The prices are on a sliding scale and the acupuncture happens in a shared space (which reduces costs and makes this type of treatment accessible); it is very peaceful and everyone respects their personal spaces. NAP is an amazing neighborhood staple! I had zero experience with or knowledge about acupuncture but decided to give it a try when an issue arose. I really lucked out to snag an appointment with Pam. She is so calming, skilled, and attentive. Pam took the time to explain the process and underlying beliefs which helped put me at ease. I usually avoid needles at all costs but I haven't felt anything beyond momentary discomfort. I have seen significant improvement and will continue to visit! The environment is pretty bare with large recliners spread out through two rooms. I usually only encounter one other guest maximum during my time. It can be difficult to get ahold of NAP to make an appointment but don't be discouraged, it's well worth it! read more

For acupuncture, you couldn't ask for a more wonderful, kind and knowledgeable person then Cindy. She's supportive and helpful and literally helped me be able to walk "normally" again, as well as addressing other concerns and health issues. For massage, there's not a more loving and kind person than Rydia. Her massages are so relaxing. I'd alway shad deep tissue and didn't think that her more "relaxing" massages would help me, but they have literally been life changing. Pretty much everyone at NAP is kind and caring and so genuine. They also provide services on a sliding scale, which makes healing within reach for many of us who could not afford this otherwise. read more

Have to add to my previous review. My husband is one of the most skeptical and analytic people you will ever know. He doesn't believe anything that he can't see with his own eyes. I'm saying this, to paint a picture of a person who probably wouldn't believe in acupuncture. He went reluctantly at first, and is a sworn a believer now. I've been a patient of Joanne's for a couple of years, and I have never felt more relaxed than after a treatment. She is patient and benevolent -- these are sometimes a lot more like therapy sessions. There is zero pressure to purchase anything or make future appointments, but I do recommend making a future appointment in-person if you know your schedule. If you are a Type A person like me, it's helpful because they don't always have a volunteer answering the phones. From start to finish the appointments at NAP Austin are pleasant. The treatments really work! Staff at the front desk is very friendly (they are mostly volunteers who have experienced the healing that this clinic has to offer for themselves and the community). And Paul Schwartz is a very knowledgeable practitioner with great bedside manner who has really transformed my life from a state of absolutely unbearable pain to a healthy and balanced state. I had never had acupuncture treatment prior to be introduced to NAP Austin. I owe my colleague who suggested that I give it a try.This colleague is a family doctor in Austin who was aware of my terrible migraine headaches over time and the fact that they were not responding to any prescription pain medications. I had headaches almost all my adulthood (average of 6-7 times a month). In the beginning it wasn't that bad considering that I could take medications and the headaches would be gone. The problem was when I started getting really intense migraine headaches that did not respond to any prescription. For about a year I was literally debilitated: the headaches would last for up to a day each time and I would get them few times a week. I wasn't able to get out of my bed while I had the headaches except for once every few hours crawling to the bathroom while I was so nauseous and/or vomiting out of my empty stomach. I was only 32 years old when this all started. This situation lasted for about a year. I was a mess, and that was when I set my first appointment with Paul. He started off with taking a very thorough history that took well over an hour. He was so professional, kind, and empathic. I started with appointments once a week. Each session he would kindly offer to give me a second or even third round of needles if he realized that there were more chakras that he could work on that day. He really wanted to help me as his patient and went way out of his way to do that when I had lost all my hope in getting cured ever. After the first month (four sessions), I had almost 70% improvement with my headaches! That was both in terms of frequency and intensity. I could not believe that this was happening so miraculously fast, so I started a log where I recorded my headaches, their intensity, and how often I would get them. Yes, the treatments were really working! About three months into my weekly appointments, for the first time in my entire adulthood I was headache-free! I didn't stop going to Paul since I was somehow afraid that if I did, those dark painful days might come back to me again!!! Paul also introduced me to books and resources to help me maintain a balanced life. I am a physician myself, and with all the appreciation that I have for my career and for medicine, I have to admit that western medicine is not all there is to help us have a healthy, balanced life. I owe Paul for all he has done to help me and have been calling him "The Healer":) Currently I keep appointments once every 2-3 weeks. Here's how it works: they have a medium-sized space divided into smaller spaces, all of which are filled with Lazy Boy recliners. You pick your recliner (which may be next to or across from someone else) and then you receive a consultation and treatment. The communal atmosphere is friendly and not off-putting because everyone is either speaking in hushed tones or resting during treatment. When you wake up and the treatment is finished you decide how much you want to pay within a set price range (approximately $25 to $40). If you need them, they often provide chinese herbs at no additional cost. What I love, love, love is that you can get high quality and professional treatments from practitioners with lots of experience, but at affordable prices ... the kind of prices you would usually only be able to pay in a school environment. I called to schedule a visit to this place and they were able to see me later that day. I told them my allergy symptoms and the treatment kicked them right out. It's no frills but it does the job. I will say upfront that I am a volunteer here. But, I was a patient first. I had always wanted to try acupuncture, but couldn't really afford one treatment, let alone treatments on an ongoing basis. I had been struggling with carpal tunnel in both hands, and someone suggested going to NAP. Not only could I afford a treatment, I could afford a treatment every week! The treatments significantly helped the pain I was having, due to the carpal tunnel. And, even though my neurologist had told me that I would have to have surgery on both hands, I ended up only needing to have it on 1. I have continued to receive treatments here for various issues and have had success. I have been treated by all 3 practitioners, and they all have their own individual style of treatment. But they are all incredibly committed to doing whatever they can to help their patients feel better, and they are all passionate about making Chinese medicine affordable to EVERYONE. This place is kind of amazing. It's like stepping back into the early days of holistic medicine, back before pretense and corporatism. I grew up in the outskirts of Houston (back when the outskirts were rural)... in that community, people were kind and passionate and deeply committed to naturalism. The staff at NAP very much remind me of that community, for which I'm incredibly nostalgic. I was treated with love and kindness from the moment I walked in. Cindy was beyond caring - talked with me for 30 minutes about my ailments, gave me medicinal recommendations, and was very caring of my body/injuries during the actual treatment. I cannot receommend this place enough. I was having severe pain in my right hip, which often shot down my leg. It hasn't been diagnosed yet, but it is probably sciatica. It took about 3 treatments before I found great relief, even though I did feel relief the day following my first visit. Getting regular treatments has allowed me to go back to yoga which strenthens the muscles. I have only been to Cindy, who is excellent, but the other therapists seem just as capable. Initially, I was worried about the communal aspect, but the low lights help me relax. Many patients go to sleep and often I can hear light snoring. As others have noted, the cost is on a sliding scale, no pressure to pay any more than the minimum if it allows you to come back more often. So I often pay the minimum and return within a few days. How lucky we are in Austin to have this afforable pain management option. I do think skeptics will have a harder time allowing the practice to work. Because I went into the therapy knowing it would work (from my experice with the benefits of massage and yoga), I found relief rather quickly. As with all treatments on the body, the mind must cooperate. read more

My wife has had severe pain from a pinched nerve from a herniated disc. She's tried countless prescription medications, none of which provided any relief, and only served to make her tired. We've got an appointment with a physical medicine doctor, but the process of going to one doctor and getting tests and then getting referred to another doctor and then waiting until they have an availability is slow. When my wife went to bed crying from the pain the other night, I decided to see if there was something else we could try while waiting for our next doctor appointment, so I remembered about acupuncture, and found NAP with a web search. We booked an appt. for the next day, and then the following morning my wife got worse, with extreme nausea and dizziness, possibly from stress. What I know about acupuncture is that Western scientists are divided about whether it ever works, and even acupuncturists admit it won't work in all cases. I had a treatment once for back pain (from a different provider) and it did nothing for me. Still, we had nothing to lose by trying (other than the cost of the appointment, which was affordable anyway). Anyway, I was hoping in the best-case scenario for my wife's pain to be slightly reduced. But after her initial session she said that the pain (and the nausea and dizziness) was almost completely gone! The pain came back later, but this was the first time she had any relief at all, so it's still significant. Full disclosure: She started a new medicine some hours before her appointment, so it's *possible* that her relief was due in part or completely from the new med, but when every med failed her completely before, and when she had no relief for the few hours after taking the med before her acupuncture appointment, we feel her relief is primarily to exclusively from the acupuncture. NAP charges a sliding scale, $35-60 for the first visit, $20-45 for repeat visits. We paid the max when we went; it was well worth it, and cheaper than a doctor's visit, which didn't provide any relief anyway. (Not to slight our doctor; she's doing the best she can with the tools and training at her disposal.) read more

I heard about NAP from a couple of friends who had been seen for allergies and assistance in healing a broken bone. Both highly recommended, and I wasn't disappointed. I have terrible, terrible allergies to mold and pretty much any kind of pollen. I've had the whole gamut of traditional treatments - shots, pills, sprays, etc. I really hate taking medicines as they always leave me speedy or drowsy...and not that much better. Since I started going here, I've noticed a measurable change in my allergies. They aren't completely gone, but they are completely manageable. My acupuncturist was also able to detect problems in my stomach area that I didn't mention at first. (How weird is a spastic stomach??) As they run in my family, I just thought they were something I would live with. But based on the "fire" i was experiencing when needles were place in that area, she was able to tack that treatment onto my regiment. I look forward to the days I go to NAP because I know I'll get a recharging rest in addition to just feeling more clarity and energy. read more

My friend Jeff lost 40 pounds going to accupuncture at NAP, per him, without any change in diet. That's not happening for me just yet, but my allergies and back pain are a whole lot better, and my pocketbook isn't lighter. They describe the sliding scale as: enough to come see us once a week to treat what you need. That means you can pay as little as $15 or as much as $40. The practitioners are wonderful, kind, they take a lot of time with you and you get to keep your needles in as long as you want. They say the record is three hours. I'd gone to acupuncture one other time before, but I'd never direclty experienced the amazing benefits until I started going to Neighborhood Acupuncture Project more consistently this spring. At the start of March, I thought I'd somehow escaped cedar fever, when my allergies returned with a vengeance! I'm still not sure what exactly it was that was causing me such awful sinus headache and cough, but several sessions of acupuncture and some herbs later, I was noticably better. In fact, I could see the difference from the beginning of the session to the end! I really only return when I feel the need (also went for some extreme neck/shoulder pain)... but I would go weekly if I had the money! (Also, I read a review saying herbs were included-- they're not, fyi. The first session starts at $35 up to whatever you are willing to pay and each session after that is $20 and up.. herbs are an additional $9-20, depending on what you get) I've gone with Cindy because that's who they placed me with to start, and I thought she was just awesome! I have a friend who swears by Tony too. Also, they are cash only so be sure to bring that! For my first session, I only had a card and they just made a note of it in their book and told me to just "pay next time".. that's just the type of kind, zen people you deal with when you go there (plus, I believe they are donating their services to this clinic?? This was my first experience with acupuncture and it has been an awesome change of pace from traditional Western medicine. I definitely still go to my family doctor when I have an immediate problem, but I've found acupuncture to be great for ongoing ailments such as body pain, gastro/digestive issues, and stress/anxiety. JoAnn is my practitioner and she really shows a concern for your overall health and is extremely thorough when asking how you're feeling at the beginning of each visit. She will also recommend herbal remedies (in general, not just specific to their clinic) when she thinks something could help. Before going to NAP, I was tentative about acupuncture's results and was apprehensive about the open environment, but I've since changed my mind about both. There's no doubt for me that acupuncture works on some kind of level, and I think the drool-invoking nap that I fall into every visit is some proof of that/all the toxins being released. The open environment has never been uncomfortable, as everyone whispers and almost everyone falls into a deep sleep while they're being treated. There was only one time that I was irritated by a patient talking way too loud, but otherwise I haven't minded the open environment. Another great thing about this clinic is that they let you stay there for however long you'd like. It seems like some acupuncture places charge $75+ and then limit you on the time of your visit. At NAP, you can let them know when you'd like to leave since they'll most likely have to wake you up :) read more

I have to admit that I was somewhat skeptical of the efficacy of acupuncture, but it was recommend to me as an alternative to medication for some chronic facial and neck pain that I had from jaw clenching while sleeping. From my initial point of view, I saw the steep prices of other establishments which was an instant turn off. Then I discovered NAP, and I couldn't be happier with the results! The pay what you can mantra got me in the door, but the hospitality brought me back! I never felt guilty about not paying the maximum fee, in fact, it was quite the opposite. Tony, my acupuncturist, genuinely seemed more interested in my recovery than in getting the fees for the service! After about four treatments, I felt rejuvenated and my neck pain had all but disappeared! Of course, one could claim that this could all result from the placebo effect, but even today, months later, I still feel great. And at such a great price, how could someone refuse trying? read more

What a great service and quality service NAP provides. I've had elbow tendinitis for several years now. Just one treatment made a world a difference. I'm planning on playing golf again -- something I thought I'd never say again. Western medicine had no answers whatsoever. I've also struggled with bad sinus infections and congestion which accupunction and chinese herbs seems to be helping. NAP is incredibly affordable. $20-$50 for the first visit (2 hours), and then $20-$40 for followup service visits (1 hour). You determine how much you can afford to pay. [I always pay the max and it is a huge bargain!] Service is provided in communal rooms. It is quite comfortable and relaxed. Plenty of space and privacy. The gentleman who is helping me is named Tony. What I appreciate the most, beyond his obvious skill and ability to use Chinese medicine to help me -- is his passion and commitment to Chinese medicine. I'd recommend NAP to anyone. This place is awesome. First of all, my allergy symptoms are about a thousand times less bothersome than they were before I went. I still have a little bit of sniffling, but overall it's been so much better (I was having trouble sleeping/working/living life like a normal person). My acupuncturist is very friendly and attentive to what's going on with me. He always asks a bunch of questions and when he makes herbs for me, he seems to really focus on what's going on with me instead of just making some generic batch that he mixes up for everyone suffering from my problems. The atmosphere is nice and quiet and they have blankets. Generally I just fall asleep (acupuncture is surprisingly relaxing) and when I wake up I feel really calm. The only bad thing that's ever happened was the very first time I was there. I had to wait a little for my appointment (because I was late -- normally I just sit right down) and ended up talking to an older lady. She was very friendly and when she got up to leave she asked me for a kiss. I didn't know what to do, so I ended up giving her a peck on the cheek and then, as if that wasn't awkward enough, I thought she was going to give me a kiss too, like she was French, so I leaned my face toward her all awkwardly and held it there until she finally gave me a kiss, too. I know she didn't want to though. It was kind of terrible. Anyway! Other than that, this place is awesome. $15 per week and $6-8 for herbs. I make no money at all, and even I can afford this, especially since it's helping so much. read more

I came here first for balance following the loss of an unborn child. My body and spirit needed alignment. She took time to listen and helped me navigate. I love the Neighborhood acupuncture Project clinic. I actually enjoy very much going to my visits. I started going here in July and my practitioner is CIndy. Let me tell you, I have been to many acupuncture clinics with various practitioners and there is none better then NAP and my wonderful Practitioner Cindy! NAP works on a sliding scale as you may have heard which is awesome! I remember back in 2012 when I would drive 45 min from Fort worth to Dallas just to see a practitioner who would charge me $85 and hardly speak to me. The reason I love NAP and Cindy ( and probably any other practitioner here) so much is because they truly care about you. I have been going since July to help ease my eczema flare ups in combination with my homeopathic treatment. From the beginning Cindy has always shown her utmost care for my health and betterment. Those are things you can't pay for. I never feel rushed when I go here either ( which is something I've seen from other community acupuncture clinics. ) And I don't mean rushed in the sense of how long you stay I mean of the detail of conversation before and after your visit. To me the initial conversations that we have before she puts in the needles are always thorough and high quality. Also when Cindy puts in the needles she has such a delicate hand that even in the most tender spots like on my face I don't feel a thing! The other wonderful part about NAP is the supplements they have. They are a reasonable price and high quality! So if you are considering going to acupuncture for the first time and are worried about the community style or whatever the case may be I highly suggest you go to NAP! I really do appreciate that the NAP exists. I highly respect acupuncture and chinese herbal medicine. NAP is among several offices in Austin that offers acupuncture in an affordable price range which I feel is a great service and also, important. after going elsewhere, i sought out the services of NAP. Ultimately, I have some ambivalence about this place. I felt the acupuncturist who worked with me was kind but i wasn't sure this is what i needed - maybe it was a gender thing for me, in terms of my comfort level and also, my specific condition. i also found it a bit awkward, as i was paying, that the guy kept asking me how much i had paid for previous acupuncture treatments. in fact, i gave $15 more than i intended because of that. I felt guilty. (Just FYI, you are supposed to pay more for the initial treatment and diagnosis) Maybe that was just me, but the whole exchange I found weird, and well, guilt-provoking. So, if you have been seeing another acupuncturist, you might not want to mention it. despite this, i would recommend NAP and hope it does well, and would consider it in the future. till then, i will continue with the acupuncturist i've been seeing for my current condition, and shell out the big bucks. read more
