I ordered the curry goat, side of cabbage, chicken patty, and a slice of famous rum cake. Everything was delicious. The flavors are always consistently great. My curry goat was meaty w only a few bones which I normally have an issue w at other establishments. The cabbage was cooked just right (not mushy or the opposite under cooked). This was my first plate food from Negril. I normally purchase the pattie and coco bread but I was craving and wanted to try something different . The food looked great and I was excited to try it . I got to Negril at 11:00am and they have a lunch special with about 4 different options . I went with the Fricassee (Brown Stew) Chicken, rice and peas , and the steamed cabbage. The chicken was tender however it lacked flavor . The rice also was flavorless . The cabbage was regular. I was hoping to taste some type of seasoning but this dish missed the mark. I've only ever had Negril delivered so I can't speak to the restaurant experience; however, the food is definitely superior to most of the other caribbean restaurants I've tried nearby. The jerk chicken (even after a 40 min delivery) was juicy and flavorful. I appreciate that its not just a sauce on it but you can see the herbs, spices and the peppers. The flavor can be a bit inconsistent since the two times I've ordered from there had slightly different taste. Some people might be turned off by dealing with all the bones, but I prefer bone-in chicken anyway! The beef patty is also fantastic with a flaky crust, but I do wish it was a little bit spicier. I did appreciate that they include gravy and extra jerk seasoning to every order so that you can adjust the food to your preference. read more

Once upon a time in the not so distant past, Downtown Silver Spring was home to an eclectic mix of ethnic restaurants that were primarily dominated by East African, Asian, and Caribbean establishments. So it's in this backdrop, that I'm glad that a place like Negril is still thriving in the ever gentrifying downtown Silver Spring neighborhood. Named after a town in Western Jamaica, the Silver Spring Negril doesn't have miles of sandy white beaches or blue waters, but does serve up legit island favorites like beef patties, stewed oxtail, and curry chicken. I've had all of these items, but i ALWAYS come back to their delicious jerk chicken. Every Caribbean island jerk seasoning is a bit different, but at Negril you can taste the garlic, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, thyme with just the right amount of salt. That marinade and rub permeates every section of the chicken as it roasts to create a crispy skin. The jerk chicken platter is served with authentic beans and rice and a cabbage/carrot slaw. This humongous plate of food is only $10! And bonus that the platter comes with a few of the house dipping sauces including the curry sauce and the jerk marinade. If Negril bottled their jerk marinade, I would buy it by the gallon; it's that good! TIP: if you are a connoisseur of spicy food and have a high tolerance on the Scoville Scale, be sure to get some of the house hot sauce. Don't let the vibrant orangeish-red color fool you. It may look mild, but the heat is downright incendiary. I worry about the long term future of places like Negril. There are a series of new condo and apartment buildings being constructed across the street, which will exacerbate the already limited parking. And will all this gentrification eventually raise the rent so "mom and pop" places like Negril get priced out of the neighborhood? Only time will tell, but for now, if you're in downtown Silver Spring, bypass the chain restaurants and head straight for Negril to get a taste of the islands, without having to make a 4 hour flight. read more

Worst jamaican food I've ever had. Not authentic at all and not even tasty (such an insult to Jamaica). The vegetable stew and curry vegetable lacks flavor and spice. While roti is not jamaican, they have it on the menu, but the staff don't even know what it is. I asked which veggies were in the vegetable roti (usually it's channa, aloo, pumpkin or greens). The guy tells me broccoli and beans! then he tried to mansplain me and asked if I knew what roti meant (yes, I eat it often. Apparently they don't know what it is!) how is anyone eating here?? I would give 1 1/2 stars if it were available. I tried: (1) Curry Chicken, (2) Jerk Chicken, (3) Curried Vegetables and (4) Chicken Fricassee. Negril catered the event and food delivered in take out containers. Very bland, relatively flavorless. With LOTS and LOTS of rice. Very stingy with the brown peas (I doubt if there were more than ten (10) individual "peas" in any container). There was some amount of coleslaw (also flavorless). I give one star because the rice and chicken were generally just OK and appeared to have some sort of seasoning on them. The Jerk Chicken, however was overcooked and very dry. Overall, the meals were remarkably So-So". I'm tempted to wonder 'how does this place stay in business?' But, I suspect that the meal prices and excessive amount of rice-per-container throw off plenty of profit. One more thing. The carry out bags look pretty good, but the handles break away from the paper sides fairly easily. In short, not a good experience. There is room for improvement. read more

While in the area of silver spring I had stopped by this place that's sort of on a hidden street. Ordered the jerk chicken Pattie with coco bread, let me just it's the most bomb patty I had in the dmv area. The first bite was popping hot they had just put pulled it out fresh when I arrived. In between you can see the pulled chicken, the flavor is all the way there ! And the coco bread was so so soft and good and a hint of sweetness in it. Everything I ordered was great (curry goat, jerk chicken dinner, patties and plantains ), except for the fish sandwich. My review is based upon the escovitch fish sandwich only. The breading was thicker than the one piece of fish in the sandwich. I understand the need to have a light batter but this was EXTRA. The batter along with the delicious coco bread was too much-I hardly taste the fish, but the escovitch mix was on point. Maybe in the future bread the fish in the store rather than the frozen pre breaded fillet. I drove about 25 miles based on a personal recommendation to try the food. Overall, no complaints on the wait-was worth it for the majority of my meal. I wish the staff was more knowledgeable on a la carte items (Dahl pourie) which I really wanted to try. If I'm in the area I will try the food again as I'm hoping it was a one off. read more
