Surprisingly, this was a fairly well stocked full service grocery store, with wide aisles and a good selection. Mind you, it's not whole foods, but they do very well for such a small town. The meat selection is good, the variety of staples (both food and non-food grocery items) substantial. That said, there were some things that were lacking -- notably the produce department which had less variety than I would have liked (but then again, I'm from the west coast where fresh fruits and veggies are far easier to come by -- I find in general that Colorado grocery stores don't do as well).

The new restaurant upstairs didn't have the same issue. Other excuses - I am too busy with one burger on the grill, I am taking my break at 12 noon, I am talking to the poker dealers (Bally employees)... I don't know what her problem is. She has no issue for making food for the Bally employees. The other cooks, I believe his name is Jay, is a cool guy and very friendly. He's super cool and self admitted a bit crude but fun nonetheless. He told us we could order anything even if it wasn't on the menu. Sunday everything on the special menu is $10. Next week he's doing a fried chicken buffet for FREE. He says once he didn't have anything and just like doing it for people. He's 72 full of life and maybe a little full of crap but totally fun and friendly. Good food, good service and a fun place on the "peak to peak highway" just outside Blackhawk. Unfortunately, the chicken was probably the weakest part of the meal. It was fairly dry and didn't have much flavor. Overall, though, we had a good experience at Bird & Jim.
