We went for a drive and found this little place in Auburn. Yummy cauliflower tacos just the right amount of spice. They were really well organized, Norah took our ordered and suggested the tacos. Nectar Cafe is not only my favorite restaurant in Auburn, it is one of my favorite restaurants in general. When you're both vegan and gluten-free, it is such a relief to be able to walk into a restaurant and order pretty much anything on the menu and not have to explain to the staff what is vegan or gluten-free. The staff here get it! Since I live in southern California, coming here is a treat for me. I make sure to visit every single time I'm visiting my family in the mountains and try to drag a friend or family member here with me. And since finding out that eating gluten was why I was always ill, I thought I would never find a place where both my mom could enjoy a quesadilla and I could too. Nectar Cafe changed that thought since they have a quesadilla that my mom can enjoy and one that I can enjoy that is both vegan and gluten free! I've been here probably about a dozen times. There are so many good things here. The guacamole is amazing and the southwestern wrap is tasty. My favorite items are the tacos though - you can't go wrong with the vegan chorizo and tempeh tacos. And finally, one of my favorite treats is the quesadilla with cashew cheese. Honestly, I could probably eat that every single day and be happy. I'm really thankful this place exists so I can still enjoy meals with friends and family. It's a place where vegans, non-vegans, and gluten-free folks can coexist and leave satisfied. Stopped in here on a Friday night during a road trip and were very pleased with our experience. Being pescatarians this place was right up our alley with vegetarian and vegan options. We had our two dogs with us, and were happy to find they were allowed to sit on the patio. They also had a dog water bowl outside available for the pups, which was greatly appreciated since I had forgotten ours. My husband got the tempeh Ruben sandwich and I was excited to try to BBQ sandwich. Both of us were not disappointed with our choices. I loved that the sandwiches came with a side of very tasty tortilla chips and a deliciously sour pickle. I was happy with the variety of the menu, and they also had a decent drink selection. Additionally plenty of vegetarian options are available at the Cafe. I enjoyed every drop of an Americano with streamed almond milk. BEWARE. Update. Went for lunch recently. Had cauliflower chicken wings. Assumed they would make their own CLEAN healthy version of sauce but no. They use Franks out of a bottle. Canola oil based, and other junk. FAR from healthful. It was SO HEAVY on vinegar, we couldnt eat it. Waaaay heavy, really tart vinegar taste. Inedible. Told two staffers, neither one cared at all. Suggested they taste it. Nope. "Its Franks sauce". Ugh. No offer to substitute for something clean and edible or a return of our money. Nothing. They just dont behave like they care. My husband and I stopped by here on our way home from a trip to North Shore Lake Tahoe. The reviews were very encouraging, and I am glad that we listened to them. The staff was very friendly. Whenever we go to a new place we always ask the staff what the most popular item is. In this case it was the Ruben, so my husband ordered that while I ordered the curry tempeh bowl. In places like these, we are accustomed to it taking a little bit of time for the food to be made... that usually means it's fresh. So while it did take time - it was worth the wait. The food was delicious and beautifully plated. The portions are generous as well. I wish we had more room because I really wanted to try the vegan gelato. Next time Gadget, next time. read more

A pleasant surprise to find a vegan/vegetarian restaurant in auburn. Came for the first time today. It was pretty hopping for a Saturday during lunch time. Prices are fair. The best thing we had was the burger with homemade patty. WOW! So good. I also like that you can get it with dairy cheese if you want (or can get it with dairy free cheese if vegan). The tacos with portobello and vegan chorizo were very good. Cauliflower "wings" was not my favorite - it was steamed and definitely would have been better if fried. This place stands out a bit of the many places in Downtown Auburn with a giant hummingbird frozen in-image on their light brown sign. Under the green awning and through the metal-framed door is a warmly-lit cozy space of orange walls with local art displayed for-sale. Beverage coolers hold all-natural beverages and a menu sports all sorts of vegetarian/vegan items. I was curious about the tempeh reuben advertised occasionally on the sidewalk sign. Within a decent wait a pastel red plate was presented with the swirly rye-wich, some corn chips, and a slice of pickle (I wish I knew so they didn't have to waste it on me). Between the brown-and-tan slices was a pile of fuchsia-colored sauerkraut, a good layer of slaw and sauce, the tempeh patty, and a slice of their herbed cashew cheese. For a vegantarian take on the reuben...it was pretty tasty in its own right. Texturally, it waved between the typical first crunch of the bread and slaw, and slightly soft with the tempeh. Taste-wise: it began bright, tart, and pickle-y due to the 'kraut and 'slaw before getting a nice creamy wave of their thousand island sauce. It all ends with a sweet and slightly nutty taste with the tempeh. Even sans pastrami/corned beef, this was quite a nice sandwich that left me satisfied, though some salsa should be complimentary with the chips since they are some salty little devils. I think the key was simply within the sauce which is basically creamy, savory, sliiiiiightly sweet dressing. It may not be for everyone, but what they do here, they do right. Even the cocoa is nice and pleasant though it leans on the bittersweet side of things but full of that strong, nutty, bitter, fatty cacao. A good 3 from me. read more

Cute place, good food. Came in on a weekday and tried out the curried tempeh listed on the the specials board. Got it as the bowl as the gal recommended in the counter instead of a wrap. The bowl arrived to my table with about 10 tortilla chips and four slices of tempeh atop a huge bowl of slawed veggies- cauliflower, cabbage, carrot, some lentils.. The tempeh was good, but the whole thing just had the same soupy taste, not bad, but not wowed. I ate more than half of the slaw and was done. I would have loved an option for more grains or something filling... I was hungry two hours later. I will come back and try a different dish, maybe this was not the best choice.. pricy and it didn't hit the spot. read more
