As a waiter at Neals, I will give you the info you need to know... BRING YOUR OWN BEER! We won't sell it to you!! Our drinks are limited to unsweetened iced tea, water, coffee, and sodas. Our entrees are slightly pricy ($12 is average) but worth every single bite. I cannot think of one entree I would avoid and I worked there for ten years. (CFS is the best) We offer some great sour dough bread although being completely honest here, our burgers are average, and the kids meals are very limited. (4 choices) If you looking for a real meal, EAT HERE. If you want fast food (burgers or nuggets) you might be more satisfied going somewhere else. As expected, if your dining on the weekend or holidays expect the wait to be a little more than usual. These cooks, servers, and managers work very hard and look forward to seeing you soon. This is one of the only places around that serves food. It's ok at best. We went there twice so I had their chicken fried chicken and it was ok the gravy was kinda bland. The mashed potatoes were also bland but the baked potato was good. The next time I went I had the burger and fries.... again kinda bland. The history of Neil's is cool and the balcony has great views. Best bet if you're in Concan is grill your own food. read more

This place is great! It's popular, so expect a wait, but it's sooo worth it. We went with a group of 9 of us, and they accommodated us easily. There was a wedding party going on in a semi-private-ish area, so that should say something about the food. Ok, speaking of food...omg. A lot of us ordered the catfish special...SO. FREAKIN'. GOOD. Catfish a-plenty. I think we each received 4 pieces of fish, along with a mess of sides... I had cole slaw (really good!), and three other sides that I knew I should have written down, because now that I've waited to write this, I can't remember. BUT...I ate a piece and a half of the fish, and took the rest home, BECAUSE I wanted to finish the sides!!! Oooh, and the hush puppy they give you...I could eat like 72 of those. I'd likely die trying, because they're BIG, but they are SO good. Going back to the fish, once I asked for a box for the rest of my fish, everyone started handing me their leftover fish to take back as well - I ended up with a TON of fish! Stuck that in the fridge back at the cabin, took it home a couple days later and RELIVED the experience. It was still so tasty, and my fiancee loved it as well. Neal's has always been a family tradition for the past 10 plus years. Each year our family has grown and this year I feel we have out grown Neal's:( since we have such a large party we make a reservation each year. They sat us in a timely manner, but after that, it went down hill. After ordering drinks and appetizers we ordered our meals. Three people on our table ordered salads with our meal, but We didn't get those prior to our meal. Two people ordered cocktail sauce, one who got it after 10 min and another never received. A couple tables didn't receive didn't receive buns. Two meals were forgotten and by the time I got my meal everyone else had finished dinner. To top it off the chicken was raw. I took my salad to go because at that point it was time to leave. I love Neal's despite the service, but if you have a large party over 30 people I wouldn't go here unless you request for 2 maybe 3 waiters. read more

Terrible service, decent food. If you're feeling too lazy to cook after a day of floating the Frio, this place is adequate. Don't expect to be treated with any kind of small town hospitality you might have come to expect from Texas towns, you're just another brick in the wall here. Neal's is awesome. Really. The fried catfish is amazing as is their signature chicken-fried chicken and chicken-fried steak. Portions are generous and filling. I also tried their fried pickles, which are very good. I have been to Neal's a couple of times as my parents live nearby. They go every couple of weeks and swear that they have the best food in the county. Nice lodge-like atmosphere, friendly, if not overworked servers and amazingly good comfort food means every time we are in Concan, we stop by Neal's. read more

Good food, quick and sweet waitstaff. My grandmother ordered a coffee, seconds later it arrived, our table had missed the butter restock and our server was back with more butter and jelly before we could blink. Breakfast was great, French toast, pancakes, bacon, sausage, breakfast tacos, everyone enjoyed what they ate and there were no complaints! As a side note, it looks like they only have one men's and one women's restroom, so when they are busy, don't wait for an emergency! read more

This place is just ok. We showed up around 11:15. I ordered breakfast. The rest of our table wanted lunch and the waitress was quick to say that they didn't start lunch until 11:30. She said they could order but not to expect their food at 11:31 because the kitchen had to break everything down from breakfast. Needless to say I got my food first while everyone else watched me eat. On to the food- I had breakfast, the pancakes were the star of the plate, pretty tasty, potatoes were dry and over cooked, bacon was dry and tasted like it had been sitting there a while. A meal with an attitude: We are honeymooning at Garner State Park and this place was recommended by a co-worker so we tried it for lunch. It was a beautiful day and we wanted to sit outside overlooking the river. When we asked to sit outside and we given a crazy look by the lady who greeted us. She said if we were going to sit outside we had to sit under the awning because there was rain in the forecast (there wasn't). We sat under the awning as directed. Our waitress was sweet and the food was decent. We both had chicken fried steaks, not the best but not the worst. Just mediocre. I prefer mashed potatoes with chicken fried steak but they only offer fries. The gravy and rolls were good. Another group came in while we were eating and sat themselves on the patio (not under the awning) and were promptly yelled at and told to move because there were only two waitresses and there was a chance it would rain (still very sunny outside). It was super slow because it's off season, there were maybe two or three other tables with guests inside so it would not have been a big deal to walk four more steps to guests seated at a table with a view. I politely brought this up to the lady at the register when we were leaving. She shrugged her shoulders and didn't apologize. I probably wouldn't have written this review if she would have just apologized. read more

I have been coming to this cafe for about 20 years. It used to be good home country cooking. Lately I have noticed you pay $9 for a tiny cheese burger. Bacon is about $1.59 extra and fries are $1.59 extra. So for a small meal, you pay about $12 and that doesn't even include the drink. They don't serve mashed potatoes. Who eats chicken fried steak without mashed potatoes? The food tastes like microwave food. You even have to pay for bread. It's a shame. They must have changed owners a few years ago because it's not the same. They are over priced and not very good. I won't be going back. It's a shame. Came in from floating the river and our large family was starving! So, we went across the street and it looked like the restaurant was closed. I open the door and asked if they were open and the hostess said yes we are just really slow. I then said I needed a table for 14 they begin to get us a table together and a lady comes out of the back and demands that the 4 & 5 year old girls in our group have a towel wrapped around them or a cover up or we had to leave. Both were in dry swimwear with shorts......all the adults and older kids were covered. I just thought why would you have a restaurant on the water and not let small children in without a cover?!? This place is just not good. If it were not in Concan with little in the way of competition, it would be out of business. I had a group of eight people that ate there and all of our various dishes were bad. The grilled chicken "special" was nothing more than a pan seared chicken breast that was too dry to swallow. The creole green beans tasted as if they were from a can and the corn on the cob was tough and undercooked. Thinking my kids had made the correct choice with the burger I sampled it and it was not that good. They actually left some of their burger on the plate which is odd since they are eating me into bankruptcy... I do not expect high end food from a place like this but they could at least serve simple food that is done well. That is not the case from my experience. Neal's is one of those places that you just keep going to. I'm a frequent Frio Floater and every trip ends in a meal at Neal's Cafe. All of the appetizers are delicious...especially the Fried Pickles & Fried Poppers. (Great after a full day on the river!) I normally switch up between two entrees, pepper steak or chicken fried steak/chicken. The pepper steak is great because they use Serrano peppers instead of jalapenos and it always oozes with cheese. If you've never had a pepper steak you are missing out, and Neal's is a great place for a first time tryer! The CFS/C is great, but I can never finish it. Never. Last time I went they had scalloped potatoes for the special and they were so freak'n good I just wanted more.Their bread is always good and fresh. Sometimes when we find ourselves eating there around brunch time. It makes it complicated because half of our party always wants breakfast and the other half lunch. So we end up spending a long time there splitting ordering times between breakfast and lunch. But nonetheless, the food is good. They have great breakfast salsa for those people who are interested in that. Just beware in summertime. They get busy and you will have to wait. But I'm pretty sure they have a rule you can take your own ice chest if you need to BYOB. (they don't serve alcohol) I just loveeee Neal's Cafe :) read more

Don't get the chicken tenders. They came from a frozen bag. Don't get the Mac and cheese. We switched our portion out for a corn on the cob that came from a frozen bag. It tasted like a generic Kraft brand. Green beans were ok. Chicken sandwich was mediocre. Mushrooms were ok... But I think they came from a frozen bag as well. Fries were ok. If you go, just get the fries and green beans. Our waiter was great though. Oh, and take alcohol because they do not serve any. read more
