Love, love, love this place! Every time I visit my parents in Uvalde, we make the drive to Neal's for dinner & no one is ever disappointed! The food & service is always amazing and tonight was no exception. Our meal came out promptly & our table was quiet as we enjoyed our meals. I had the Special--Chicken Fried Steak, Green Beans, Corn on the Cob and French Fries. Delish!!!! & I am so glad they were the normal Green Beans and not their "Frio Green Beans" (those are cooked with several stewed tomatoes and really aren't my style). Check their website to see if they are open before you make the drive and if you want the fried chicken, make sure you order it as soon as you sit down because it takes longer to prepare. I was skeptical because the prices seemed a little high--matching the prices for a resort restaurant. Both my wife and I had the chicken fried steak. Really good! I liked the green beans (although I think they may have been canned--which I like--but they were seasoned well). Came here on Saturday for lunch (well, breakfast would've been preferred but we long missed that one) and it was our first chicken fried chicken experience. We started out with the Freddy nachos which rocked and were told this is the place for CFC. The best way to order this is to ask for the gravy on the side so it doesn't make the chicken soggy per advice from our friends - and unless you're prepared to eat a ton of food you can easily split this dish! The bread it comes with is AMAZING and the chicken fried chicken was overall pretty decent. Apparently the white gravy is the worst for you (not surprisingly) and although it adds a certain something to the dish by itself it really has no flavor. I don't know if it's a sin to say this but I would've preferred good ole brown gravy! It came with a side salad which honestly I didn't touch because it looked like it came from a bag and was perhaps past its prime date. The food and atmosphere is awesome - but our waitress was young, perhaps new, or just in general sucky. In any event, going out back to check the patio and view of the Frio River is a must - it's truly beautiful and I'm guessing would be a great place for an evening drink. Good place to eat when starved from swimming. We arrived at 7:30, a little before closing. Very nice view from the patio. Waitress was super! We ordered the special: chicken fried steak with gravy, green beans, corn on the cob and macaroni and cheese. While it tasted fine for frozen, it was all FROZEN, not fresh, except possibly the macaroni, and none of it was well seasoned. Vegetables tasted boiled, not salted or buttered. Even the key lime pie was thawed from frozen. For the volume this place gets, food prepared from fresh produce and making the steak from scratch should not be too much to expect. I guess the lack of competition in the area discourages the owners from making the effort. Okay...tried the special again tonight but earlier, at 7:00. The food was much better. Try the Freddy's nachos made with bacon... good! The chicken fried steak tasted freshly made. The potatoes at gratin was homemade and delicious. The green bean were frozen but prepared with stewed tomatoes, so they were better than before but corn the cob was boiled from frozen and not seasoned... the same. The iced tea was old and had to be returned. Important note... Views into the kitchen revealed much cleaner than before. The waitress was great! So... I raised the review from 2 to 3 stars. In my book to get 4 or more stars, the food needs to be prepared from fresh, not frozen. Lesson learned... Don't go to Neal's near closing time. You'll get subpar food. read more

They pretty much, like every other restaurant by Concan, serves chicken fried ______ and burgers. I had the chicken fried chicken. While the quality of chicken was good, and the batter was fairly light (in a good way), it just lacked flavor. I had to load it up with pepper. They serve no beer, but you can bring in your own. Great little diner with an even better view. We drove up for the day in hopes of having breakfast and the joke was on us. They didn't open until 11 on Thursday. Soooo, we drove around for 3 hours. There is a lot to see in the Frio River area but not a lot to do in September so keep that in mind. When we did decide to go back at 11:30 for lunch there were only 3 occupied tables so we got lucky. We each had a different burger. The burgers were good but sure not worth $12. including fries. Be aware that they charge $1.79 for fries so when the waitress asks if you want chips or fries, she doesn't warn you that the fries are an additional cost. It was our fault for assuming. Lunch was $28.90 before the tip and that is very pricey for 2 burgers, 2 fries and 2 ice teas. We won't make that mistake again. read more

As a family of 12 we stopped by on our way home because of the reviews. We usually eat our last day breakfast at lost maples cafe in utopia. Well Neal's was so disappointing. Started from the moment we walked in. I don't know if it was the owner or manager but he seemed a bit rude and made it seem like they didn't have room inside so recommended outside, we went along with it. Got out to the patio and it seemed ok until the sun was covering more then half our tables. All of the carbonated drinks were flat , water had a spider in it. Waited like 20 minutes for a refill on our coffee. The "hash browns" are not hash browns they are cubed potatoes. Oh and if your a salsa lover their home made salsa sucks to say the least. We are from south east Texas and the food they serve here at least for breakfast is not what we consider good at least not for a $200 + tab. So we will keep our tradition and eat our last day breakfast at lost maples. We would like to venture out and try different places but this experience kind of left a bad taste in our mouths. We usually go off reviews on Yelp but this time we were let down big time do not know what the hype is about at all. We plan to stay at Neal's cabins next year so we are close to the slide for the kids. I pray we don't regret it. read more

We were camping at Garner State Park last Saturday night, and had even packed food to cook there, but after swimming and hiking all day we were exhausted and decided to get dinner at Neal's instead because it's so close to the park. We sat outside on the patio and the view is gorgeous. FYI, they don't serve alcohol here :( but it is BYOB if you plan ahead. For dinner we split the chicken fried steak plate, a salad, and some fries. The steak itself was nice and crispy, and even though the sides were definitely frozen/canned, that didn't bother us since it's what we were expecting. The fries were good, and the salad is pretty much what you would expect a salad in Concan, TX to be like. Our waitress was sweet and it didn't hurt that she was doting on our daughter. Really, Neal's is more like three stars in our book, but we're rounding up because we had a nice time here and they seems like a salt of the earth local business. read more

We were hungry early in the morning about 8. Thank God my daughter saw the Neals Cafe sign I made a quick u-turn and so glad I did! Getting off the truck I looked around and being that it was our first time in Concan and at Neal's it was beautiful. Kinda reminded me of the movie Dirty Dancing small little town with cabins it was nice the outside entrance to the restaurant is nice. Going in we were greeted immediately we asked to sit outside the view was beautiful. So are the hummingbirds they were the cuttest things! Breakfast was exceptional Omg! Our waitress was super awesome she was the sweetest!! Food was delish! The area is beautiful, service was great. Definitely recommend and we will be back!! read more

Yummy food after a great weekend on the river. Our waitress was an absolute sweetheart and brought us extra dinner rolls. This place is good ole' country cooking with an amazing view. The history of this place, and particularly Mary Tom, is fascinating, and totally adds to the ambiance. Last year when we ate here we had the chicken fried steak special- delicious. Now that meal came with a pear salad, which I won't tell you about, you just have to open your mind and try it yourself. Arrived on Friday just prior to 5:30PM before the dinner crowd. There were large groups of people already there but still plenty of available seating. We sat inside due to the summer heat and admired the landscaping and scenery through the large windows, which were spotlessly clean. The restaurant was clean and well decorated with lots photos on the walls. Dinner for six was served two plates at a time a couple minutes apart, somewhat awkward sitting there watching your companions eat. Everone at our table ordered the fish plate consisting of three pieces of fried fish, a corn coblet, fries, cole slaw, lima beans and one hush puppy. Dinner rolls were served about half way through the meal and they were very tasty, although a bit late. The tea was served in a tall glass and only unsweet is available, but refills were fairly quick. The fried fish was clearly overcooked, not just on my plate but on all of our party. The light breading although tasty was dark and the fish was crunchy and dry on the ends and sides. One of the three fillets was mostly bones with a large backbone on one end. The fries were "just warm" and were soggy... not crisp. The corn coblet was small and overcoked to the point of being too soft and deflated, as if setting in water too long. The cole slaw was a bit dry and was warm. The lima beans were well seasoned although mine remained practically untouched since they are more of an acquired tatste. The hush puppy was very good but wish there were two. Overall, the quality of the main dish items was poor. The dinner rolls and hush puppy were the stars of the meal. Good comfort food. All the staff works as a team and you could tell they were busting their tails, every single person. Table bussing, wait staff, hostess staff, cooks and dishwashers (we could see them from our Table). They helped one another too which was so nice to see. Long wait for a table on Saturday at 8pm - quoted 30min took almost an hour. Then food took about 20 min or so. Burger was solid - the sour dough bun was ridiculously good. Grilled chicken was good but small size. Sides were good. We liked the southern comfort feel and it was BYOB. Great for families as well. Bathrooms could have been cleaner better they smelled pretty bad lol. We would come back next time we are in town though. Definitely give this place a shot. Get a burger ! read more

Concan isn't really near anything unless you're camping at Garner. If you're out that way, though, please go - it's totally worth the drive. The food is really incredible. It is fresh and full of flavor. It honestly surprised me when I went, being this barely noticeable place in a tiny town. It might have been the best gravy I've ever tasted. The cheese fries were really cheesy, the scallop potatoes were also on my top 10 ever. The biscuits. . . yeah, also top 10. Prices weren't too bad either. They seemed a dollar or two higher than I'd expect when viewing the menu. But, when the food came, the plates were enormous and way more than I could actually eat. Food came out at a fair speed. Check came a little slow. Staff was friendly. It was dinner time and the place was full. I suspect it's a local favorite and I now know why. I sat outside so it was as clean as you can expect outside. The view is so, so good. Do yourself a favor and sit outside. You're out on a covered deck that's far above the river and overlooking green hills as far as you can see. It is so beautiful. read more

Mmmmmm! This place is great! Had lunch here on my last day staying at Neal's Lodges. Had the fried mushrooms, chicken fried steak, and fries. Everything was very tasty and well prepared! The mushrooms were stupendous! Get those, you get a ton! My friends got burgers and seemed well pleased with them. Our server left a bit to be desired, I didn't really mind, but my friends were complaining about her lack of checking up on us and service (I found out later they didn't bother to tip her, not cool, hopefully I tipped well enough to cover them). I didn't ever get my rolls I was supposed to get that she said would be out. Had to ask for them and ended up taking them to go. I also never got a drink refill even though I drank all my drink. I'm easy to please though, no biggie for me. Definitely the best place to eat out there I reckon. There seemed to be other little place around, but nothing seemed as good or busy as this place! Stopped in for lunch on our way back from Leakey. Fried pickles appetizer was so good! Could've eaten those as my meal. I got the fried chicken special. Good homemade hand breaded fried chicken. Came with mashed potatoes, peas and carrots. No sweet tea. Yeast rolls were delicious, especially when I put honey on them. DUDE! How have I never been to Neal's in close to two decades coming to the Frio. You will not be disappointed with their "combo" meals which is a basically a three course meal with a salad for appetizer, a plate with two sides, and a dessert for 12.99! I had their fried chicken and the recipe hasn't changed since they opened up and guess what, it doesn't need to. One of the best fried chicken plates I've had period, point blank. We have been eating at Neal's every summer for around 10 years. Tonight we went in and stood at the door while 3 teenage girls giggled and bull**itted with each other before deciding to seat us. So we finally get a seat and order the Chicken Fried Steak special which was great as usual. For dessert I ordered a brownie with ice cream for my two young kids (6 and 7). The tiny slice of $5 brownie and came out absolutely boiling hot! The bowl was so hot I couldn't even grab it. We waited for our waitress to come back so I could give her a bit of advice on how to microwave something for a child but she never showed back up. My daughter now has a huge blister on her tongue and a new found fear of brownies. When we left I let the cashier know what had happened and was given a very short "ok" for a response and was promptly blown off. How about at least acting like you care that my kid just got the crap burned out of her in your restaurant because your staff is over nuking the food!? Talk about not giving a darn about customers or kids. We like the food for the most part but the staff is extremely rude and thoughtless.
